Facebook helps you see less from mere 'Acquaintances,' Valentina Monetta approves (video)
Let's say you're trying to have a gander at Facebook, but given that you've well over twenty thousand friends and associates, keeping up with your news feed has become something of a challenge. Today, The Social Network is introducing a tool that'll make it easier to add friends to your Acquaintances list, and moreover, see fewer of their mundane posts without having to unfriend (read: embarrass) them. When asked for comment, San Marino's own Valentina Monetta (shown above) quipped: "Facebook, uh, oh, oh everybody loves you so." If you're confused, head on past the break and press play. Please. Microsoft guide helps iPad app writers port to Windows 8
Microsoft has shown early signs that it's hoping to lure iPad developers to Windows 8 with a new design guide. The Windows Dev Center example shows the common differences in layout between an iOS app and Windows' new Metro interface, including not just the look but also how certain commands would unfold and how either would respond to gestures. Its most advanced element is an explanation of "contracts," or agreements between apps and Windows 8 that give them permission to share files or search between each other, play out to other audio sources, or toggle settings.

Gogo WiFi lands in more US Airways Airbuses and Embraers, intros Gogo Vision
Gogo isn't just tossing its mid-air wireless goodies toward Virgin and American, with US Airways being the latest to join the extra perks party. Per today's announcement, the airline is stuffing Gogo WiFi in a few more planes, including the Airbus A319, A320 and Embraer 190. Netflix updates iPad app for Retina display
Netflix finally rolled out the Retina-ready version of its video streaming app for the iPad. You can grab it for free from iTunes. The video service requires a minimum $7.99 monthly subscription.
Of course, the iPad's display is actually much higher resolution than even a 1080p HD video stream -- but at least the app's interface elements will look razor-sharp.

Leaks: Beats buyout of MOG for full music, gear store
Beats Audio's rumored acquisition of MOG could be less about HTC and more about its own brand. Leaks have it planning to open a full web music store, CNET had heard, but it would also sell headphones and "numerous other products." While the deal wouldn't be wrapped, MOG would serve as a quick route to getting a service up and running.

Apple currently testing parts for LTE iPhone, says Barclays
Apple is in the middle of evaluating potential parts for the next-generation iPhone, according to a Barclays research memo. One expected choice is Qualcomm's MDM9615 chipset, which enables voice and data over LTE. The part is different from the MDM9600 used in the third-generation iPad, which is limited to data only. It also remains to be seen if the new iPhone will support "world" LTE, unlike the iPad, which requires different models for different bands. Adding LTE to the iPhone is expected to cost Apple between $3 and $10 extra per unit versus 3G.

Microsoft on iPad and Mac ban: No comment
Quite a few Apple sites were running a story this morning noting that Microsoft's Sales, Marketing and Services Group (AKA SMSG) had allegedly sent out a memo forbidding employees from spending company funds to purchase iPads and Macs. World's first two-megajoule ultraviolet laser fired in California: no, you can't buy one
The Wolverines may have concocted the "most intense" laser in the universe back in '08, but it's a group of grinners at the National Ignition Facility in Livermore, California that can now lay claim to firing the planet's first two-megajoule ultraviolet laser. Earlier this week, a 1.875-megajoule shot was fired into the target chamber, but it broke the two-dot-oh barrier after passing through the final focusing lens. Google Wallet may share revenues after poor uptake
Google may be looking to implement major changes to Google Wallet after getting little support, leaks might have disclosed on Wednesday. Having only ever earned support from Sprint, the search giant was said by Bloomberg to be looking at a revenue split to get AT&T or Verizon offering support. The proposal would give a cut of Google Offers coupons and other deals.

Robot jellyfish feeds on its surroundings, looks for a job in underwater surveillance
We've seen plenty of robots inspired by nature, but this robot jellyfish developed by researchers from University of Texas at Dallas and Virginia Tech goes one big step beyond mimicking a jellyfish's movements. It's powered by hydrogen, which means that it could potentially stay underwater for prolonged periods of time and constantly refuel itself from the water around it. Dell issues BIOS update A03 for XPS 13 Ultrabook, gets a handle on fiesty fans
Can't say we noticed an extraordinary amount of blowing from our XPS 13 Ultrabook review unit, but for those with an optioned Core i7 model, you may want to give the source link a look. Down there, you'll find a download link to the A03 BIOS update, which delivers "an updated thermal table which dictates fan speeds and trigger temperatures." Here's a question: did Broadcom get a 50 percent discount for acquiring a company that already had "Broad" in the name? Vorgeschmack auf Retina-Macs: AirDisplay erlaubt HiDPI-Modus mit neuem iPad
Bereits seit einiger Zeit erlaubt die iOS-App AirDisplay die Nutzung von iOS-Geräten als weiteren, kabellosen Monitor für den Mac. Jetzt kündigte Avatron, die Entwickler der App, an, dass man in der nächsten Version den HiDPI-Modus von OS X Lion unterstützen wird.
Um den HiDPI-Modus zu nutzen, muss nach der Installation der App in OS X als Auflösung “1.024×768 (HiDPI)” für das externe Display ausgewählt werden. Google reportedly rethinking Google Wallet strategy, may share revenue with carriers
It's not a done deal just yet, but Bloomberg is reporting that Google could be about to make some big changes to the way it does business with Google Wallet. Citing people with knowledge of the project, Bloomberg says that Google is considering sharing revenue from Google Wallet (specifically that from coupons and special offers) with carriers in an effort to boost adoption of the service, which hasn't exactly taken off as quickly as Google may have hoped (and is also seeing some increased competition). DirecTV has released a new version of its iPad app, v1.5.0. Users can now watch movies and TV shows over a 3G or 4G connection instead of just Wi-Fi. While live TV is still restricted to Wi-Fi, apps from other TV networks often block cellular support completely.

Zynga acquires Draw Something dev OMGPOP for $200 million
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how App Store fortunes are made. We've posted already about the almost overnight success of Draw Something, an app that has picked up over 30 million downloads and even beaten Zynga at its own game on Facebook. Air Display update turns new iPads into 2048x1536 monitors
Avatron has just detailed that its Air Display app ($10, iTunes) will be updated to support the new iPad's 2048x1536 resolution for its wireless secondary display technique. The update process did encounter challenges, however, as adding four times more pixels slowed frame rates. While resolving this problem, the Avatron programmers were able to improve the frame rates on older iOS devices, and especially the dual-core iPad 2 and iPhone 4S.

When I first saw this news on MacRumors this morning, my immediate thought was "Duh! Verizon halts dubious third-party billing on landlines, years after landlines were 'in'
Okay, okay -- landlines are still useful. But rapidly growing, they are not. That said, Verizon is caving to congressional pressure in a relatively minor way, announcing that it'll be banning certain third-party charges on landline bills. Microsoft thinks Windows Phone will overtake iPhone in China
Microsoft's Greater China CEO Simon Leung used a media briefing Tuesday to make the prediction that Windows Phone would overtake the iPhone in his country. By running down the price to around 1,000 yuan ($158), Windows Phone would succeed on sheer volume, Bloomberg heard. Propellerhead announces Figure for iOS
Propellerhead -- makers of the music DAW software, Reason -- had a press conference in Frankfurt, Germany yesterday where it announced some exciting new products and features. Most notably for iOS users, Propellerhead announced a brand new music making app, Figure.

Hipstamstic und Instagram kündigen Partnerschaft an

Hipstamatic und Instagram tun sich zusammen: Fast Company zufolge werden die beiden Foto-Apps heute eine Partnerschaft ankündigen. In Zukunft soll man mit Hipstamatic gemachte Fotos direkt in das 27 Millionen Nutzer zählende Netzwerk von Instagram hochladen können. Unter den Bildern wird die mit der Hipstamatic-App verlinkte Textzeile "Taken with Hipstamatic" zu sehen sein. Falls der Nutzer die App nicht besitzt, wird er zum App-Store weitergeleitet.

Entwickler-Interesse: iOS an der Spitze, Android erneut rückläufig
Schon vor einigen Wochen thematisierten wir das Interesse der Entwickler an iOS. Eine aktuelle Umfrage von Appcelerator, den Herausgebern von plattformübergreifenden Entwicklungstools, zeigt, dass das Interesse der App-Entwickler an Googles Betriebssystem in den vergangenen Monaten gesunken ist.
Während iOS bei den Entwicklern sowohl auf dem iPad als auch auf dem iPhone weiterhin bei fast 90 Prozent rangiert, musste Android auf dem Smartphone und Tablet erneut rückläufige Zahlen verzeichnen. Was Android-Telefone angeht waren zuletzt noch 78,6 Prozent der Entwickler interessiert, während es auf dem Tablet 65,9 Prozent sind. Google Maps improves 3D models of major landmarks
Google Maps has long sported 3D models of major world landmarks. Some of them, however, left something to be desired. For example, the Piazza del Duomo in Florence was missing its signature domes. Now it's been drastically improved with a series of smooth shaded roofs. Plenty of other landmarks have also been revamped, including the Sydney Opera House, White House and the Petronas Towers. China tops US in iOS, Android activations for first time
China has beaten the US for the first time in terms of new iOS and Android device activations, says mobile ad and analysis firm Flurry. February data collected by Flurry shows China barely topping the US. For March, though, Flurry is predicting that China will represent 24 percent of activations, versus the US' forecast 21 percent. Back in January 2011 the US accounted for 28 percent, easily dominating China's 8 percent.

FCC clears look into 700MHz interoperability, 2GHz cell data
The FCC in an Open Commission Meeting Wednesday morning unanimously voted to pursue possibilities for significantly improving 4G's use in the US. It would verify whether there would be any adverse effect to making the 700MHz A, B, and C blocks of spectrum interoperable, letting one roam on the other. Agency officials would want outside input on what the rules would be if there were little to no interference, as well as whether any interference might be cut back.

HP vereint Drucker- und PC-Sparte

Einstein Archives website rolls out first phase of project to get 80,000 documents online
Believe it or not, there are still things that have yet to be put on the internet. That has included most of Albert Einstein's archives, a portion of which has previously been available, but which now has a greatly expanded online presence courtesy of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (and a grant from the Polonsky Foundation UK). The first phase of that expansion includes some 2,000 digitized documents, ranging from personal correspondence to scientific papers, which are fully searchable and able to be examined right down to the finest detail. DirecTV iPad app adds (some) TV and movie streaming 'Everywhere'
After adding live TV streaming features to the DirecTV iPad app last fall, the company is expanding the feature today by pushing an upgrade that lets viewers watch video (but no live TV, yet) even when they're away from home. Carberp: Mutmaßliche Botnetz-Betreiber in Moskau verhaftet

Siri Yelps a bit louder with iOS 5.1

BSkyB's NowTV promises Internet TV for all UK
Satellite TV provider BSkyB threw itself into contention with Internet video providers on Wednesday through its own pure Internet TV service. Called Now TV, it will supply on-demand movies, sports, and other forms of entertainment both to computers as well as game systems, smartphones, and tablets. Instagram and Hipstamatic to announce photo-sharing partnership
Historically, Instagram has been the definition of closed. It's only available on one platform (iOS), and no third-party services were allowed to port content in via an API. According to Fast Company, that's changing today. It's bruited that Instagram will be opening its doors ever-so-slightly to one Hipstamatic, enabling users of the latter to tag their photos with lenses and filters, and then push them into the Instagram universe. It's being likened to Foursquare users pushing their check-in information to Facebook and Twitter, and it's bound to increase the visibility (and revenue) of Hipstamatic. Instagram and Hipstamatic together outlined a deal on Wednesday that will see Instagram take photos from an outside service for the first time. Hipstamatic users will soon have the option of sending photos to Instagram along with other services, the mobile app developers told Fast Company. Sprint CEO says iPhone users more loyal, use less data
Sprint iPhone users are more loyal to the carrier, and actually consume less data in some cases, says CEO Dan Hesse. Urteil: Drei Jahre und neun Monate Haft wegen Abofallen

Etihad Airways to use iPads for aircraft training
Last year, the iPad landed in cockpits as a replacement for flight bags. Now it's being used to supplement training courses for aircraft engineers. According to a report by Gulf News, Etihad Airways is using the iPad to train 200 licensed aircraft engineers. Eleven engineers already went through the Airbus A340 course which was developed by airline technical service provider SR Technics.
Both the airline and SR Technics intend to further develop the iPad aircraft training course and hope to eventually replace traditional, spiral-bound manuals. Werne

Chrome briefly tops Internet Explorer as top browser
A brief if historic milestone in web browsers occurred this weekend as Google Chrome temporarily overtook Microsoft's Internet Explorer in usage, StatCounter found Wednesday. For one day, March 18, Chrome had 32.71 percent of traffic to IE's 32.5 percent. A rise in share from Brazil, India, and Russia was credited for the sudden position swap.

Even cerebral palsy can't stop this dedicated video creator
Christopher Hill isn't your typical video producer. The youngster whipped up the clip after the break controlling his array of Macs almost entirely with a single switch. Chris has cerebral palsy, a severe motor function impairment that makes it all but impossible for him to interact with a computer through a traditional keyboard and mouse. Video eats 4G LTE data plans fast
Verizon's and AT&T's LTE networks are so fast and so convenient that iPad owners are blowing through their data cap in a matter of hours, says a Wall Street Journal report.
iPad broadband plans start at 250 MB for US$14.99 on AT&T and 1 GB for $20 on Verizon. Plans go up in increments and top out with a 5 GB plan for $50. Users watching video on their iPad can easily blow through those lower caps in a matter of minutes.

Apple resumes in-store iPad pickup; iPad Wi-Fi issues spread
Apple has resumed offering in-store pickup for orders from the company's online store, checks show. The option was briefly disabled beginning with the launch of the new iPad on March 16th. Orange vows to bring LTE to all EU markets by 2015, more
French wireless provider Orange revealed on Tuesday that it plans to launch 4G LTE networks in all 10 of the European Union member countries the carrier operates in by 2015. At the same time, three million NFC-capable handsets will be made for Europe in 2012, while 10 million are vowed for next year. Part of 10 promises, the carrier also said it will provide 80 percent of the population of Africa and the Middle East with a 3G network.

Apple's nano-SIM proposal has Motorola, Nokia, RIM unhappy
The nano-SIM is about to be approved by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), but this simple vote on a telecommunications standard won't be all that simple. According to a report from The Financial Times, the technical details behind this next-generation SIM is turning into a battle between Apple on one side and Motorola, Nokia and RIM on the other.
The dispute centers on Apple's insistence that the nano-SIM standard use a drawer-based design, similar to the micro-SIM design used in the current iPhone and iPad. Nokia, Motorola and RIM, however, have a competing design they claim has "significant technical advantages."

The iPad, iPhone and other mobile devices are a growing source of revenue for those selling virtual goods, says a report from Inside Virtual Goods. The report looks at the virtual goods market and tracks sales from mobile devices and social games like those on Facebook.

Touch Arcade noticed something interesting about the new iPad that you might not have seen yet. Specifically, it uses Retina Display graphics meant for the iPhone 4 and 4S displays when doubling the size of non-universal iPhone apps.
This is a small use case these days, as many popular apps are universal. But there are still a few apps without dedicated iPad compatibility built in, and the new iPad will now use the Retina-style graphics when pixel doubling the image.

LG Optimus M+ adds some minor hardware improvements, coming to metroPCS
LG's Optimus M has lingered around metroPCS' phone catalogue for over a year now and it looks like it's finally getting a similar-looking, but improved, replacement. Unfortunately, the Optimus M+ isn't quite enough to confer the title of carrier flagship. Incremental changes include a new 5-megapixel camera and a screen that's been boosted from 3.2 to 3.5 inches. According to mobile ad network Chitika, Apple's new iPad, which has already sold millions of units despite being available for less than a week, is already blowing up in network usage. The latest numbers from the ad network say that more than five percent of the total iPad traffic is from just the new iPad. Neues iPad: Retina-iPhone-Apps laufen mit voller Auflösung
Auf einem iPad lassen sich nicht nur native iPad-Apps, sondern auch Anwendungen fürs iPhone ausführen. Handelt es sich um fürs Retina Display des iPhone optimierte Apps, zeigte das iPad bislang aber nur die Variante mit niedrigerer Auflösung für ältere iPhones an. Auf dem neuen iPad ist das anders – dieses setzt auf die Retina-Oberfläche der Apps.

Apple könnte bald in einer weiteren Statistik ganz oben stehen: Das Unternehmen steht kurz davor, größter Entwickler von Mobil-Chips weltweit zu werden. Schon jetzt hält Apple bereits 13,5 Prozent des Marktes, Intel liegt mit 13,9 Prozent bisher vorne.
Apple verkaufte im letzten Jahr insgesamt 176 Geräte mit A4- und A5-Chips, Intels Partner konnten insgesamt 181 Millionen Geräte mit Intel-Mobil-Chips verkaufen. Zu letzteren gehören auch Notebooks mit Mobil-Chips. Developer interest in Android receding, BB in freefall
A new survey of 2,173 app developers around the world shows that interest in developer for the iOS platform is growing, Windows Phone development is holding steady, Android interest has dropped slightly and interest in Blackberry platform development has plunged. IDC: PCs may see late 2012 bounce, but slow long-term
IDC painted an optimistic picture of traditional PCs in a Tuesday long-term estimate of their shipments. Researchers expected PC shipments to grow just five percent year-on-year in 2012, but pinned most of this sluggishness on the first half, as the iPad and other tablets were a "powerful distraction," IDC VP Bob O'Donnell said. However, a mix of the Windows 8 launch and ultrabooks was assumed to be creating "excitement" that would see a bounce back.

Virgin Mobile USA's text and data services are out across the USA
As customers of Sprint's contract-averse MVNO have probably noticed, Virgin Mobile has been having a national outage of its text and data services for at least several hours now. While we're hearing from some customers it's been out all day, acknowledgement of the disruption only just became Facebook official. Aereo countersues broadcasters over its internet TV streaming service
Now that Aereo has launched its antenna TV-over-the-internet service it can devote some attention to its legal issues, and today countersued the TV networks suing it (Fox, PBS, Univision, WPIX and WNET) in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan.
