Intel plans branded IPTV service, could launch by end of 2012
In a shift that would see its familiar brand move from the inside out, Intel's reportedly in talks to create an IPTV service that could rival current subscription offerings from cable and satellite. According to the Wall Street Journal, the venture would deliver programming via household internet connections and has the personal backing of CEO Paul Otellini, signaling a consumer-facing shift for the typically behind-the-scenes company. Intel preps streaming TV service, own media hub
Intel is in the midst of developing its own online TV streaming service and hardware to match, leaks disclosed Monday. It would create a form of virtual TV that would sell access in cable- and satellite-style bundles, the Wall Street Journal understood. While possibly a white box service that would let others put their own badge on top, Intel would sometimes run under its own name.

Apple would like to see better numbers overseas, but China is proving to be a tough market for Western corporations to crack. All Things D is reporting that Samsung is still king of the hill in China, with Samsung products still earning triple the sales of the iPhone. iPhone owner sues Apple over Siri
Sure, Apple's Siri voice assistant isn't perfect. Sometimes there's network connectivity problems, sometimes background voice interferes and sometimes Siri is just plain wrong. It's for those reasons (and others) that Apple launched the service as a "beta." Despite the beta tag, at least one iPhone customer is not happy with Siri and is taking Apple to court, says a Wall Street Journal report. DARPA director exits agency for Google, assumes mysterious role
Not even the federal government's factory of scifi dreams can hold off the likes of Google's recruiters. According to Wired, Regina Dugan, DARPA's current director, will be moving on from the Department of Defense's fantastical research arm for an unspecified "senior executive position" with the folks from Mountain View. Apple already prepping first external betas of OS X 10.7.4
Apple is on the verge of releasing the first external beta of OS X 10.7.4, according to AppleInsider sources. An initial build is expected to reach a small group of developers "within days," followed by another one targeted at all Mac developers, likely by the end of the week. Twitter snatches up Posterous, microblogging field about to get a little bit smaller
The Y Combinator-funded Posterous had its time in the sun and now it's being absorbed by the biggest player in the microblogging market. The simple sharing service struck a chord with many of Silicon Valley's elite, but it never managed to make a major dent in a field already dominated by the likes of Tumblr and its now owner, Twitter. Daily iPhone App: Ultimate Battle Zombies is a freemium zombie throwdown
I unfortunately made the mistake of overbooking myself for interviews last week at GDC, so I didn't get to see developer Brian Robbins' panel on how to put together money for making iPhone games. But I did get to meet up with him later in the week, and he showed me what's going on with his company's latest iPhone app, Ultimate Battle Zombies. Ultimate Battle Zombies is a freemium title that serves up multiplayer, turn-based fights with some really goofy zombie characters. Aereo countersues TV networks to clear mobile TV service
Aereo started off the week with a countersuit hoping to stop a broadcaster lawsuit targeting its fledgling mobile TV streaming service. The service wanted the court to declare that Aereo didn't violate the copyrights of ABC, CBS, and NBCUniversal, effectively negating the original complaint. None of the services had formally tried to stop the launch of Aereo, which goes live on Wednesday.

Pegatron workers: Apple toured plant hours before explosion
Apple inspected a Pegatron plant building iPad 2s mere hours before an explosion injured at least 59 people, according to workers interviewed by NPR. The number of injured was initially pegged at 61, but Apple currently claims 59. NPR says it met with 25 victims of the blast last week, such as He Wenwen, who was calibrating a machine used to polish iPad 2 backs when the explosion happened.

Yahoo sues Facebook for patent violations
Yahoo brought its dispute with Facebook to a head on Monday by suing the social network. It alleged that Facebook was treading on ten patents focusing on ad and messaging, including ways to track and verify ad hits, privacy, social networking, and technologies like those behind Yahoo Messenger. The lawsuit claimed not only that Facebook was borrowing others' technology for elements like Facebook's News Feed but that Facebook effectively wouldn't exist without Yahoo's work.

Yahoo hits Facebook with patent infringement lawsuit
Yahoo has seen some fairly big shakeups within the company recently, and it looks like it's now also trying a change in tactics. As AllThingsD reports, Yahoo has today filed what's being described as a "massive" patent infringement lawsuit against none other than Facebook. That suit concerns ten patents in all, which cover everything from advertising and privacy measures to messaging and social networking itself. Galcon's Phil Hassey plans a one-way trip to Anathema Mines
Phil Hassey has had some success on the App Store with the popular Galcon, and last week at GDC in San Francisco, he was showing off a game that's actually been in development for quite a while. Anathema Mines, Hassey says, actually has some ideas he's been playing with for a long time, dating all the way back to a few game jams as early as 2005. Apple trims ITC claims versus Samsung to move faster
Apple is now known to have whittled back its ITC dispute with Samsung to speed up the case. It dropped an entire patent claim on a cantilivered push buttonm where Samsung had a definition ruled in its favor. Sprint intros driver-less 3G/4G USB modem
Sprint has just introduced a 4G-capable USB modem, the 3G/4G Plug-in-Connect USB. It can simply be plugged into a Windows, Mac, or Linux computer and provide mobile data access on Sprint's 4G network or 3G in areas not yet covered by the faster network. There is no need to install drivers, just as with the recently introduced Clearwire Stick Atlas modem.

Build your own iPhone 4, 4S macro lens
Many iPhoneographers have been looking for a macro lens that will work with the iPhone 4 and 4S to take awesome closeup images. Unfortunately, a lot of those lenses cost a few bucks -- the Olloclip (which also includes a fisheye and wide-angle lens) runs $69.99, and while the magnetic macro lens from Photojojo is only $20, it also leaves a lot to be desired. BT lowers claims to speed up patent lawsuit over Android
UK phone giant BT has tried to accelerate its lawsuit versus Google over Android patents by reducing the scope of its patent claims. In addition to opposing a Google objection to the claims that it intentionally violated patents, BT in a motion filed Friday but discovered now that simultaneously dropped the demand for tripled damages that was creating the stumbling block. An FCC filing has given away Lenovo's plans for a previously unannounced tablet that would show the company trying to take on the iPad more directly. The IdeaTab S2109 would have a 9.7-inch, IPS-based, 4:3 ratio display like its Apple counterpart, although it's more likely to have the 1024x768 screen of the iPad 2 than an exotic greater-than-HD panel. New Houston store may point to 8AM launch for iPad sales
The new Highland Village Apple Store in Houston, Texas will open at 8AM on the 16th, Apple has announced. T-Mobile HTC One S shows up in FCC with AWS bands?
It doesn't come right out and say it, but we have a strong suspicion that the HTC PJ40110 -- approved by the FCC today -- refers to T-Mobile's version of the HTC One S. This model offers an AWS 3G radio, in addition to AT&T-friendly 850 /1900 3G bands, and its ID is just a slight nudge from the PJ40100 (global One S). AT&T to expand LTE network to Cleveland, New Orleans and others

EU willing to settle with e-book publishers over pricing
European Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia in comments Monday said his agency was willing to settle with publishers over an e-book price fixing investigation. He was willing to put an end to possible penalties for Hachette Livre, HarperCollins, Penguin, Simon & Schuster, and Macmillan if they addressed "all our objections [at the EC]" over the group allegedly raising prices unfairly, Reuters heard. Grippy Pad: Haftmatte setzt auf Geckofuß
Die Natur ist noch immer die beste Mutter aller Erfindungen. Apple says Samsung violated court order by denying source
Apple late last week accused Samsung of violating a court order for evidence in its main US lawsuit. The Korean company had supposedly only given Android source code for one version each of the devices at stake, such as the Galaxy Tab 10.1, before a December 31 deadline. It was now "too late" to get a "meaningful use" out of any source code Samsung might give before the August 25 trial date, Apple said.

SAFFiR: the autonomous, firefighting humanoid robot
It took six years, but at long last, Anna Konda has a formidable firefighting partner. SAFFiR, also known as the Shipboard Autonomous Firefighting Robot, is being shaped by scientists at the Naval Research Laboratory.
