Of all of the bloggers here at TUAW, I probably see more iPad cases than anyone else. I've reviewed both the ridiculous -- a case I refused to write up after it literally ripped apart as I was installing it -- and the sublime. Google pinpoints shutdown dates for Wave, Translate APIs (amongst others)
'Tis a sad day in the world of Google at least for developers who use any of a handful of ill-fated APIs. As the search giant's API list has grown in recent months, it's making the decision to cull a few in the effort of "spring cleaning." Review: Das neue iPad & Smart Cover
Nach einigen Wochen Wartezeit kam dann letzten Monat endlich mein neues iPad an. Gekauft habe ich das weiße 16 GB WiFi-Modell, zusammen mit einem hellblauen Smart Cover aus Polyurethan. 1923 Leica O-series becomes world's most expensive camera, fetches $1.89 million at auction
Just when we thought ancient wooden boxes were all the rage among camera collectors, a compact beauty has shattered our theories -- this 1923 Leica 0-series just sold at auction for €1,320,000, or about $1.89 million in US money. Another Mac OS X 10.6.8 build seeded to developers
Sources have told us that another build -- 10K531 -- of Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard is now available for download by developers.
The developer seed became available late yesterday, and focuses on AirPort, Networking, Graphics Drivers, the Mac App Store, QuickTime, and VPN. As usual, Apple has requested that developers file bug reports if any quirks are found.
There are no known issues with this seed of Mac OS X 10.6.8, which may point to a release of the updated operating system in the near

Gigabyte bolts an SSD to a motherboard (so you don't have to)
Gigabyte has decided to simplify matters for those who want the power of an SSD in their desktop, but don't want to deal with the hassle of buying and connecting one. The company's new Z68XP-UD3-iSSD (catchy, no?) motherboard comes with a 20GB Intel SSD 311 mounted right on it, which should sound somewhat familiar. Amazon's Lady Gaga promo cost $3.2m, gave it 38% album share
Amazon's two days of its 99-cent Lady Gaga album promo were costly but may have paid off in a market share battle with iTunes, both official and unofficial sources said Friday. Music industry contacts said that about 440,000 copies of the pop star's album sold in the two days of the promo, almost all of which were the less extensive but much cheaper sale version. Since Amazon was still paying Universal and Interscope the full $8.39 cut, Billboard estimated that Amazon MP3 took a loss of $3.2 million on all its sales.

Lodsys shifts in-app purchasing target to Android devs following Apple response
We figured Apple's firm response to Lodsys earlier this week regarding its claims against iOS devs would prompt the patent holder to move on to its next target, and sure enough, it looks as if said target has been selected. Alaska Airlines first major in US with iPad flight manuals
Alaska Airlines on Friday had the distinction of being the first large US carrier to use iPads as flight manuals. All of the pilots are getting the Apple tablet loaded with the GoodReader app and PDF copies of all the aircraft manuals, reference charts, and other content they would need for their flights. Moving to the iPad not only saves a large amount of weight, dropping from 25 pounds to 1.5 pounds, but has active links between documents and color that normally wouldn't reach the printed copies.

iPads on the flight decks of Alaska Airlines aircraft
I've talked about iPads for pilots a few times here on TUAW, particularly when discussing kneeboards for the device, but our sister site Engadget just pointed me to a press release from Alaska Airlines that caught my attention.
The airline with the smiling Inuit on the tail has started a pair of initiatives called "Bye, Bye Flight Bag" that replace paper manuals (and eventually paper aeronautical charts) with iPads. Facebook hires for desktop apps, mum on iPad version
Facebook's newly opened Seattle office has been recruiting in a signs it's developing desktop software. A post for a Desktop Software Engineer would have the developer write Mac and Windows desktop apps. Few clues showed up as to the nature, but apps would likely need "server-side APIs" to integrate the apps more tightly with the social network.

Tactile Brush uses sensory illusions to let you feel games, movies
Poor arachnophobes -- it's bad enough that 3D movies can make it look like swarms of eight-legged freaks are pouring out of the screen, now Disney wants you to feel the creepy crawlies, too. Apple hat heute die dritte Version von Mac OS X 10.6.8 mit der Build-Nummer 10K531 für alle registrierten Entwickler freigegeben. Wie zuvor sollen AirPort, Grafik-Treiber, der Mac App Store, Netzwerkfunktionen, QuickTime und VPN getestet werden.Wie es aussieht erscheint etwa einmal pro Woche eine neue Version - In zwei Wochen ist die WWDC, werden wir bis dahin noch eine öffentliche Version von 10.6.8 sehen, falls Lion dann erscheint? ElliptiGO: mit dem Crosstrainer durch Stadt und Land flitzen (Video)

Nach Hüft- und Knieverletzungen musste Bryan Pate das Joggen aufgeben und versuchte, aufs Fahrrad umzusteigen. Mit der sitzenden Haltung konnte er sich aber nie richtig anfreunden, und sich drinnen auf dem Crosstrainer abzustrampeln war ihm auf die Dauer auch zu fade. So entstand ElliptiGo 8S, ein mit 2499 Dollar leider nicht ganz billiger Ausbruch aus dem Fitnessknast. Alaska Airlines ditches paper flight manuals for iPads
The iPad has already gotten the go-ahead from the FAA as a replacement for paper flight charts and maps, and now Alaska Airlines has become the first major US airline to hop on board the paperless bandwagon. While it's not quite ready to ditch paper navigation charts just yet (though that is under consideration), the airline has announced that it will be replacing its traditional flight manuals with iPads, which will be loaded up with the GoodReader app and PDFs of 41 different manuals and other materials. Neue Episode im Nokia-Patentstreit

Paypal v. Google: a tawdry tale of trade secret misappropriation
Google and its poached Paypal employees got sued for trade secret misappropriation yesterday, but we didn't know the dirty details until now. A peek at PayPal's complaint reveals there's a bit more to the story. Apparently, Paypal and Google were in talks last year to use PayPal for payments in the Android Market. Bericht: Apple setzt unter iOS 5 weiterhin auf Google Maps und nicht auf eigenen Dienst
Seit fast zwei Jahren kommen immer wieder Berichte auf, wonach Apple beim iOS in Zukunft nicht mehr auf Google Maps sondern auf eine eigene Lösung setzen will. In den letzten beiden Jahren hat Apple bereits zwei Anbieter von Kartenlösungen übernommen, im vergangenen Jahr tauchte eine Stellenausschreibung auf, in der Apple nach Fachleuten suchte, um die Karten-Applikation im iOS "to the next level" zu bringen. Intel rejects idea of ARM-based MacBook anytime soon
Intel has rejected the idea of an ARM-based MacBook anytime soon. The debate about whether an ARM-based MacBook could arrive sooner rather than later has again arisen, this time courtesy of a Japanese rumor site, which claims that Apple has been testing an A5-equipped MacBook Air. However, according to CNET, Intel believes that Apple will stick with Intel for at least the short to medium term.

The new ooVoo app offers free video calling to PCs, Macs, Android phones and of course other iPhones. There's also text messaging, and up to 3 people on audio or video calls. PC or Mac users can receive the chats in a browser, and the app supports 3G and Wi-Fi.

NASA-Sonde OSIRIS-REx sammelt Bodenproben auf dem Asteroiden 1999 RQ36 (Video)

PlayStation announces official wireless cans for PS3, stereo frags coming September
Perhaps Sony deemed the Ultimate Weapon too powerful (or too expensive) for PlayStation 3 owners, but these new wireless cans ought to keep your ears warm, at the very least. The new official PS3 Wireless Stereo Headset features 7.1 virtual surround sound, a retractable, mutable microphone, and standard embedded volume controls. Leak reportedly shows Google Nexus 3 as all-touch HTC phone
Google's third-generation Nexus phone may have been spotted for the first time in a sighting late Friday. The device, called just the Nexus 3 for sake of reference, was clearly designed by HTC with its signature curves and top grille. HP expands laptop battery recall, doesn't want you to feel the burn
HP wants to make sure you don't get burned, literally. For the third May in a row, it's issuing another expansion of its voluntary battery recall on laptops produced from July 2007 to May 2008 -- frankly, we're considering a holiday to mark the occasion. SEC violated procurement law by purchasing Apple equipment
The Washington Post reports that the SEC violated procurement law when it purchased almost US$1 million in computer equipment from Apple in 2008. In a report released last week, the SEC's inspector general said that after the purchase the computer equipment "immediately failed" to work as intended. The report says that the SEC violated federal regulations when it told Apple its budget for one of the orders and failed to seek out any further competitive bids.

TechCrunch reports that iOS 5, expected to debut at WWDC next month, will feature a "completely revamped" notification system and widgets. Apple has long been rumored to be revamping its notifications system in iOS, and many have expected that such a notification system revamp would make its way into iOS 5.

Rumor: Apple maintaining Google Maps service in iOS 5
Despite recent reports suggesting Apple is moving to develop its own mapping service for iOS, separate sources now claim the company is planning to rely on Google Maps for iOS 5. Apple testing an A5-powered MacBook Air, report claims
Even as Apple is preparing to update the MacBook Air models sometime later this year (possible as early as next month), a Japanese blog has claimed that the company is testing a version of the ultraportable that uses an Apple-designed A5 chip rather than the Intel Core 2 Duo found on current models, PC World reports. Fei Lam of WhiteiPhone4Now reveals how Apple found him
Earlier today we told you how Apple's legal team finally caught up with Fei Lam, the teenager from New York who was selling white iPhone 4 conversion kits, and filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against him. Now new information about the whole ordeal has emerged including how exactly Apple found him.
In an interview with Fast Company, Lam says that he first found out about the lawsuit when he received an email from Fast Company. Lam also says that, contrary to reports, he did not make US$130,000 for the sales of white iPhone parts.
He is apparently meeting with Apple's lawyers within the next month to discuss the lawsuit and any legal reper

FCC asks AT&T for first info on T-Mobile buyout
The FCC finished the week with its first request for information in its decision on whether or not to approve AT&T's buyout of T-Mobile. A set of 50 questions will check how AT&T's wireless spectrum is being used, the nature of its overall network, and why it believed it needed T-Mobile's spectrum to meet its goals for 4G. Officials at the US agency also wanted to know what AT&T had considered, if anything, as a solution to its airwave demands instead of making the $39 billion proposal.
