Dear Aunt TUAW: Will Lion ship on disc?
Dear Aunt TUAW,
I keep reading about how Lion is most likely to be distributed through the Mac App Store. I think this is great, and a huge convenience. I see how this would work for upgrading, but what happens if you have to wipe your computer and reinstall it? If you have no disk, how can you boot from it?
It would be a rather large pain to boot from Snow Leopard and then reinstall Lion after logging into the Mac App Store and re-downloading Lion again.
I was wondering what your thoughts were.

Google updates Maps for mobile browsers
Google has updated Google Maps for iOS and Android mobile browsers, adding features that those who use Google Maps for iOS or on a desktop have had for awhile.
These features include the ability to view your current location, suggestible search and auto completion; clickable icons; directions for driving, walking, biking and transit; different map layers to toggle satellite, traffic and more.
I'm honestly surprised these features weren't in the web app before. To give it a try, head to maps.google.com via a mobile browser.

Hype 1.0 allows you to create slick, animated websites in HTML5
If you've wanted to create a simple but attractive site with some animation but didn't want to go through the hassle of using Flash (not to mention the cost), check out Hype on the Mac App Store. Hype uses a simple timeline metaphor to allow you to place images, text, shapes and more into pages and animate them. Hype uses a Scene metaphor to arrange your pages, much as you would arrange slides in Keynote. Add in your graphics, video and text and a simple animated site can be yours in a few clicks.
Hype also provides a JavaScript API so you can plug in your animations to a larger site, one perhaps beyond the capacity of Hype to adequately manage it. This isn't an application for creating a large e-commerce site. Hype is more tuned

Is this Samsung's first medium format digital camera?
Look closely at that photo above. Those, friends, are digital cameras from Samsung. That's right, even that boxy one that looks quite a bit like an old-school medium format film shooter. This photo was quietly inserted into a blog post from Sammy about lens design, without so much as a caption to clarify what our curious eyes were seeing. There are lots of auto-sketching applications available for iOS -- you can see their results littering Twitter every now and again. The Mac, however, has a lot more horsepower to play with, and SketchMee really takes advantage of it.
SketchMee sketches you, or anything else you like, from a photo. Whether it's in chalk, pencil or a combo of the two, SketchMee will render any image in a pretty great approximation of a sketch. Study suggests iPad readers skim, show poor retention
Miratech conducted a study that compared the way people read on a newspaper with the way they read on the iPad. The research used reading time, gaze patterns and eye movement to discern any difference between the two mediums. The study concluded that people concentrate more on the content and remember an article better when they read the newspaper.
This result is tantalizing and may seem to bolster the opinion the iPad is a toy, while the newspaper is where people turn for their real news. Before you toss the iPad in the trash, this survey has two major flaws. First, the authors don't tell us how many people participated in the survey. It could be 50 or 5,000. This number is important as the smaller the sample size, the larger the margin of error.

Halb Heli, halb Flieger: Eurocopter X3 schafft flotte 430 km/h Spitze

Noch letzte Woche legte der Eurocopter X3 zügige 220 Knoten hin, was für einen für Rettungs- und Suchmissionen ausgelegten Flieger mehr als schnell und amtlich ist. Nun hat er diese Marke nochmal durchbrochen: stolze 232 Knoten, also knapp 430 km/h hat der X3 hingelegt, was halb so schnell ist wie ein Personenflugzeug. Leider ist nicht geplant, dass der Eurocopter auch für kommerzielle Zwecke genutzt werden kann. Also entweder beim DRK als Helikopter-Flieger bewerben oder mit dem Video und der PM nach dem Break vorlieb nehmen.

Adobe dominates Kaspersky Lab's top ten PC vulnerabilities list
Being number one is usually an honor, but not when it comes to Kaspersky Lab's top ten PC vulnerabilities list. Unfortunately for the software giant, Adobe took top dishonors for Q1 this year, pulling in five total spots on the list, including the top three. According to the security firm, all of the vulnerabilities appearing on the list allowed cyber-criminals to control computers at the system level. Apple transfers Thunderbolt trademark to Intel
Intel is credited as being the brains behind the new Thunderbolt I/O technology, but Apple is the one who holds the original trademark for the name. According to recent reports, this may change as Apple is reportedly transferring ownership of this trademark to Intel.
Intel originally created the I/O technology using optical cabling and marketed it under the name Light Peak. Apple approached Intel about Light Peak and the two companies began collaborating on the project. Over the course of a few years, Apple pushed Intel to drop the optical connection and replace it with copper which permits the transmission of electricity as well as data. They also changed the name.

CameraSim: DSLR lernen geht nun auch online
Natürlich möchte jeder eine DSLR, weil man bekanntlich die dollsten Fotos damit schießen kann. Alte Fotohaudegen haben mit der Vielzahl an Einstellungsmöglichkeiten auch kein Problem - war früher ja nicht anders. Neueinsteiger oder all jene die Fotografieren nur aus der Handycam kennen, sind mit Blende, Verschlusszeit und ISO in der Regel überfordert. Im Netz gibt es nun CameraSim, den DSLR-Simulator, der genau dafür einen hervorragenden Übungsplatz bietet. Einstellen, schießen, Ergebnis angucken und lernen. Geht auch ohne Computer? Große Explosion bei iPad-Zulieferer Foxconn
Wie MicGadget meldet, ereignete sich bei einem der Foxconn-Werke für die iPad-2-Produktion eine große Explosion, bei der bisher zwei Menschen gestorben sein sollen. Explosion at Foxconn's Chengdu plant injures several, could affect iPad 2 supply
An explosion occured at Foxconn's Chengdu plant earlier today, with reports claiming several workers have been injured. The Taiwanese company has yet to release a statement regarding figures and the cause of this tragedy, but according to 21st Century Business Herald, witnesses saw a lightning hit the A05 building before the explosion took place -- it is believed that this is a case of dust explosion, and security guards were allegedly telling evacuees that the smoke was toxic. At the time, hundreds of workers were present in the affected building which houses an iPad 2 assembly line, and it's not immediately clear how this will impact Apple's shipment. Apple hat einen Patentantrag für eine Technik eingereicht, mit der man große Musikbibliotheken auf Geräten mit wenig Speicherplatz unterbringen kann. Verizon Wireless may end unlimited data plans this summer
The Verizon iPhone launched with a unlimited data plan, but that all-you-can-eat option may be disappearing this summer. During the Reuters Global Summit, Verizon chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo hinted that the carrier's unlimited data plans would be replaced by a mega-data plan.
These new data plans would offer data in the same way a family share plan handles voice minutes. A subscriber would buy a tiered data plan whose GB allotment could be shared by multiple devices. Shammo did not mention pricing or even when these mega-plans would roll out. He said these plans were "a logical progression" for the carrier. Such a plan would make sense for someone with a Verizon iPhone and a 3G iPad, as long as the pricing is kept in check.

Sony joins EMI and Warner in Apple cloud music service

Just a day after CNET suggested that EMI joined Warner Music Group in allowing Apple to distribute their music over a cloud-based service, now Bloomberg is claiming that Apple has also officially inked a deal with Sony Music. Ich hatte letztens schon erwähnt, dass Tap to Play! nunmehr in Tumblr erzeugt wird und nicht mehr in einer eigenen Wordpress-Installation. Dieses Posting beschreibt die Prozesse, die für eine Umstellung von Wordpress auf Tumblr erforderlich sind.
Tumblr sieht sich als kleines Blogging-System, welches Fetzen aufsammelt, über die man online stolpert. Dementsprechend kommt es mit vorgefertigten Templates für unterschiedliche Inhaltsformen: Texte, Bilder, Videos, Links. Wordpress als ausgewachsene Blogging-Plattform ähnelt dagegen eher einem umfangreichen Content Management System. Beide Systeme verwenden für die Darstellung Themes. Die Ähnlichkeiten enden hier allerdings schon, denn wo die Wordpress-Themes mit PHP-Code und Plugins beliebig erweitert werden können, besteht ein Tumblr-Theme ausschließlich aus HTML. TUAW's Daily iOS App: Chromanoids
Chromanoids is Hothead Games' second title for the App Store. The first was Bunny the Zombie Slayer, and it's done pretty well (even though most of the studio's previous work was for PC). This one's a more retro affair -- it's basically Missile Command, though obviously with the touchscreen rather than the traditional wheel. But the twist here is that the action is color based -- you need to not only line up shots against invading ships, but you need to match shot colors with ship colors, which means red ammo takes down red ships, and so on.
Things do get more complex as the game moves on, with ships that use colored shields and even ships that change color as they fly

TU Wien entwickelt kleinen und günstigen 3D-Drucker
Mitarbeiter der TU Wien haben den bisher kleinsten, leichtesten und billigsten 3D-Drucker vorgestellt. Der Prototyp ist ungefähr so groß wie eine Milchpackung, wiegt 1,5 Kilogramm und kostet in der Herstellung 1200 Euro. "Wir werden den Drucker noch weiter verkleinern - und auch der Preis könnte sicher noch spürbar sinken, wenn man ihn in größerer Stückzahl produzieren würde", sagt Klaus Stadlmann. Amazon hat nach eigener Auskunft seit April 2011 in den USA mehr E-Books als gedruckte Bücher verkauft. Statistisch setzte das Unternehmen je 100 Print-Ausgaben 105 digitale für seinen E-Book-Reader Kindle ab. Zu den gedruckten Büchern zählen dabei sowohl Taschenbücher als auch Hardcover-Ausgaben. Kostenlose Kindle-Titel sind laut Amazon nicht berücksichtigt. Sie würden den Vorsprung der E-Books noch weiter vergrößern.

Apple vaults into top 5 PC maker spot in UK, Western Europe
Earlier this week, Gartner issued a press release about the Western European PC market. For most PC manufacturers, things aren't looking good. For the first quarter of 2011, PC sales in the region were down 18 percent year over year. However, as usual, Apple has bucked the trend. For the same period, Apple's Western European PC sales were up 10-15 percent in the same markets. That growth helped the Mac maker spring into the top five PC vendor list in both the UK and Western Europe.
"Apple made its debut among the top five vendors in Western Europe, displacing Toshiba in the first quarter of 2011. Apple was the only one among the top five vendors to increase shipments, with volumes for mobile PCs growing 32 percent in the first quarter of 2011,"

Interdiscount, die grösste Schweizer Elektronik-Handelskette, baut ihr Geschäft mit Apple-Produkten massiv aus. In 110 (der insgesamt rund 200) Interdiscount-Verkaufsstellen sollen Apples Produkte künftig grossflächig präsentiert werden. Report: Not much has changed in the growing smartphone market
It's that time of the month again -- another report is out from Millenial Media about advertising on the smartphone platforms, with more conclusions about what the market's been up to lately. This month, the big news is that there's not a lot of big news at all. Apple continues to sit on top of the manufacturers list, Android tops the list of operating systems, and the smartphone market continues to grow, increasing its impressions shares 6 percent month-over-month in the mobile device market as a whole. In fact, for the first time in the history of the report, the top 20 list of devices doesn't list any feature phones at all; it's all smartphones, all the way down.

Age of Tribes
Mit Age of Tribes nimmt sich ein weitere Entwickler des Lemmings-Themas an: In Axel Friedrichs Spiel, welches 1,59€ kostet [AppStore], müssen kleine, wuselige Menschen zu einer Zieltür geführt werden. Dabei gilt es wie im großen Vorbild, Plattformen zu erklettern und Abhängen auszuweichen. Das Spiel hat ein langsames Spieltempo und überführt daher gut das Spielgefühl von Lemmings auf das iPhone. Das Spielprinzip könnte allerdings kaum unterschiedlicher sein: Wo man in Lemmings die Figuren selber mit Aufgaben besetzt, zeichnet man in Age of Tribes Linien auf den Bildschirm. Gamebook Adventures: An Assassin in Orlandes
Das erste der angekündigten Gamebook Adventures wurde für 3,99€ im [AppStore] veröffentlicht. In den 70er und 80er Jahren waren Spielbücher recht populär: Ein interaktives Buch, in dem man ein kurzes Textstück las und dann mehrere Auswahlmöglichkeiten hatte, was der Hauptcharakter tun kann. Je nach Entscheidung, las man an anderer Stelle weiter. Assassin%E2%80%99s Creed II Discovery
Ubisoft hat mittlerweile Assassin’s Creed II veröffentlicht und auch gleich nach wenigen Tagen (seufz) um 3 US$ gesenkt, so dass das Spiel momentan nur 5,49€ kostet [AppStore]. Die Fortsetzung zu Assassin’s Creed – Altaïr’s Chronicles (hier besprochen) verlässt das Puzzle Platformer-Genre des Vorgängers und kommt als schnell zu spielendes Jump ’n’ Run mit hübsch animierten 3D-Kampfeinlagen. GT Racing
Es ist schwer, Gameloft im Rennspiel-Bereich zu übersehen: Asphalt 4, Ferrari GT, Shrek Kart, Gangstar, Asphalt 5 und Driver stellen wahre Platzhirsche dar, an denen andere erst einmal vorbei müssen. Dennoch weisen die meisten Gameloft-Racer große Schwachstellen auf, sei es in der Grafik, dem Geschwindigkeitsgefühl oder der Steuerung. Auch das bei uns gepriesene Asphalt 5, bei welchem man erstmals die Tilt-Steuerung auf brauchbare Empfindlichkeit einstellen konnte, ist bei schnellen Fahrzeugen nur noch wenig spielbar, da man ständig in den Begrenzung rast.Jetzt stellt gerade Gameloft für 5,49€ [

Giana Sisters - Endlich ein vollständiger Platformer!
Hinter Giana Sisters steckt eine abenteuerliche Geschichte: Für von Nintendo nicht belieferte Spielesysteme wie den C64 (YouTube) oder Amiga 500 erschien 1987 The Great Giana Sisters. We Rule - Kostenloses Aufbauspiel von ngmoco:)
Vor ziemlich genau einem Monat hat ngmoco:) angekündigt, vollständig auf das Freemium-Modell umzusteigen, welches sich mit Eliminate (hier vorgestellt) und Touch Pets Dogs (hier vorgestellt) bereits abgezeichnet hat. Dass sich ngmoco:) vor allem bei Touch Pets Dogs noch in der Erprobungsphase befand, war allerdings deutlich zu sehen, wurde doch noch wochenlang an der Spielmechanik gefeilt. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 - Episode 1
Das hat gedauert: Nach Jahren der mäßigen 3D-Projekte, genrefremden Sportspielen und Flippern, sowie Remakes der klassischen 2D-Varianten erscheint nun endlich wieder ein neues 2,5D-Sonic und führt die vor 16 Jahren abgebrochene Geschichte um den Helden Sonic und den Erzfeind Dr. Egghead weiter (7,99€, AppStore).Dass sich das Spiel am Klassiker orientiert, beweist vor allem der erste Level, ist die optische Ähnlichkeit zu früheren Sonic-Spielen hier doch verblüffend. E-Ink hat auf der SID dieses Jahr mal wieder aufgedreht und eine Reihe an Konzepten vorgestellt, darunter ein Display mit einer Auflösung von 300 ppi das eine 2400x1650 Auflösung hatte, und auch jetzt schon an die verschiedensten Hersteller gehen soll. Mit dabei das sehr amüsante Snowboard-Konzept komplett mit Wettervorhersage und Kompass und ein Halter für eine Partitur. Video nach dem Break.

Kaum ein Genre ist im AppStore so stark vertreten wie die Match-3-Spiele. Und quasi täglich kommen neue heraus. Es ist geradezu unfassbar, dass sich jetzt noch Entwickler hinsetzen und ein weiteres derartiges Spiel in den großen, unübersichtlichen Topf “AppStore” werfen. Gun Wars - Rundenbasierte Strategie
Bei Gun Wars stehen sich auf einer mehrfarbigen Karte etliche Gegner gegenüber. Jedes Feld der Karte wird von einer zufällig generierten Anzahl an Kanonen eingenommen. Die eigene Farbe kann durch Antippen eines eigenes und eines benachbarten gegnerischen Feldes dieses angreifen und Felder gewinnen (oder beim Angriff auch verlieren). Bei jedem Angriff gibt es einen Zufallsfaktor, der die Chancen variiert. Dieser ist allerdings so gering gehalten, dass meist der stärkere Angreifer gewinnt. Sind nach einem Angriff und der Übernahme genügend Kanonen übrig, so können in einem Rutsch etliche feindliche Felder übernommen werden. Nach Ende des eigenen Zuges erhält der Spieler soviele neue Waffen, wie der Anzahl der größten zusammenhängenden Fläche entsprechen. Es ist verblüffend, wie wenige Online-Multiplayer-Spiele es auf dem always-online-iPhone gibt. Galcon hatte ich letztens schon einmal vorgestellt, die Spiele von Eurocenter aber bislang noch “ignoriert”. Eurocenter bieten mit Bomber Online einen Bomberman-Klon mit Online-Multiplayer an, mit Ace Tennis Online ein sehr gelungenes Tennis-Spiel, welches man gegen Gegner in der Weite des Internets spielen kann und etliche Brett- bzw. Geometry Wars-Spiele: 2079, Illuminations, Isotope, Light Wars, Nano Fighter!, PewPew
Mittlerweile ist der AppStore voll von Kopien von Geometry Wars. Falls ihr mit dem Begriff nichts anfangen könnt: Geometry Wars ist ein 2003 für die XBox und anschließend etliche weitere Systeme (bis hinunter zum Nintendo DS) erschienener Science Fiction-Retro-Shooter. Die Besonderheit: Man spielt auf einem Vektor-Raster in Neon-Optik und alle Gegner, das eigene Schiff und die Waffen sind ebenfalls abstrakte geometrische Figuren. Hinzu kommt ein extrem hektisches Gameplay, bei dem der Bildschirm mit Gegner gefüllt ist, die alle in großen Feuerwerken zerplatzen. Marketing und Qualität im AppStore (1/2)
Die Preise im AppStore sind auch eine Jahr nach dessen Eröffnung noch immer ein Diskussionsthema. Viel wird vom “Race to the bottom” geschrieben, also der Notwendigkeit, Applikationen für einen möglichst geringen Preis verkaufen zu müssen, damit diese überhaupt gekauft werden und der Angst, dass sich “richtige” Spieleentwicklung deshalb nicht mehr lohne. Piraterie im AppStore - Ein Phantomproblem?
Im Rahmen des AppStore kursieren seit Wochen und Monaten sehr unterschiedliche Zahlen zum Softwarediebstahl. Als Diskussionsbasis dienen meist Informationen von Pinch Media (“38% Raubkopierer!”) und groß wirkende Prozentwerte von Entwicklern (“95% der Erstnutzer stehlen!”). Allen Zahlen sind zwei Dinge gemeinsam: Es wird nicht bekannt gemacht, auf welchem Basiswert sie beruhen und die Grundannahme ist, dass die 95% gestohlenen Softwareinstallationen auch 95% Umsatzverlust entsprechen. Konsolenqualität im AppStore
Das iPhone und der iPod Touch sind merkwürdige Geräte. Als Entertainmentmaschine oder Allzwecktool komplett gegensätzlich vermarktet teilen sie sich die gleiche Einkaufsmeile, in der alles zu finden ist: “There’s an app for that”. Der Spielebereich entwickelt sich gut, aber wer seinen DS oder die PSP durch ein Apple-Gerät ersetzen möchte macht dies wohl nicht primär wegen des Spieleangebots oder der günstigen Spielepreise, sondern einfach, weil Apples Geräte breitere Möglichkeiten bieten und das iPhone häufiger dabei ist, als es die PSP je war.Schaut man sich die Top-Spiele des DS oder der PSP an, so entdeckt man inmitten der über 100.000 Apps von Apples AppStore aber schmerzhafte Lücken. Ersteindruck: Spiele auf dem iPad
Nach nunmehr fünf Tagen mit dem iPad vage ich ein Fazit: Für mich ist es die ultimative Spielmaschine. Hat das iPhone meinen DS verdrängt, so scheint das iPad nun das iPhone zu verdrängen. Größere Spielfläche, bessere Bedienbarkeit, besserer Klang und die höhere Prozessorgeschwindigkeit (das iPad ist insgesamt noch immer schneller als das iPhone 4) sorgen für lebendigere Spiele und eine viel stärkeres Gefühl, “im” Spiel zu sein. Für mich vor allem verblüffend: Gerade Rennspiele mit Accelerometer-Steuerung profitieren vom iPad.

Die Presse und das iPad: Wie liest es sich am Besten?
Heute gibt es ausnahmsweise einen Nicht-Spiele-Artikel.Geradezu euphorisch hat die Presse auf das iPad reagiert und es soll nichts geringeres einläuten als die Rettung der Buch- und Verlagsbranche. Das ist umso bemerkenswerter, sind doch eine Vielzahl derer Probleme hausgemacht, wie das fehlende Micropayment auf Webseiten, Artikel mit Informationen von gestern, nachgeplapperte Tickermeldungen oder schlicht schlecht oder gar nicht recherchierte Artikel. Das iPad soll nun immerhin den Inhalt vom Totholzmedium entbinden und somit einer neuen Generation schmackhaft machen. Das darf als kleiner Sinneswandel aufgefasst werden, denn bislang wurde sich immer zwanghaft am Medium und nicht am Inhalt festgeklammert.Mit dem Erscheinen des iPads fängt allerdings die Arbeit für die Verlage und Redaktionen erst an. Lawsuit says AT&T overcharging users for iPhone, iPad data
A new class action lawsuit claims that AT&T "systematically overstated data usage by 7-14 percent and sometimes up to 300 percent" on users' iPhone and iPad data plans, according to MSNBC. The lawyers for the suit have said that they have spent over US$80,000 testing iPhones on AT&T's network to prove AT&T's overstating data usage.
As part of the testing, the lawyers turned off every feature on the iPhone that could use 3G data. Even after shutting off all 3G data connections, there were still 35 transactions for data usage on the lawyers' AT&T bill. Salesforce.com verzeichnet Rekordumsatz und erhöht Prognose

Yay for the UK, it's now one step closer to catching up to the Japan of last decade. Mobile carrier Orange is today launching the UK's first mobile phone contactless payment service, dubbed Quick Tap, for purchases up to £15. Patent shows Aperture on iPad
An Apple patent filed back in 2009 shows the Aperture app running on a larger touchscreen -- something akin to the iPad, though of course back then it didn't officially exist yet. The image is actually part of a larger patent that goes through the whole process of how user interface elements work on touchscreen displays, but as you can see above, Aperture is clearly the app being shown.

Adobe dominates Kaspersky Lab's top ten PC vulnerabilites list
Being number one is usually an honor, but not when it comes to Kaspersky Lab's top ten PC vulnerabilities list. Unfortunately for the software giant, Adobe took top dishonors for Q1 this year, pulling in five total spots on the list, including the top three. According to the security firm, all of the vulnerabilities appearing on the list allowed cyber-criminals to control computers at the system level. Galaxy Tab 8.9 keyboard dock spied in Russia, TouchWiz poked on video
Hey, look at that: it's a keyboard dock for the Galaxy Tab 8.9. The folks at mforum.ru caught this guy on camera at the Russian launch of Samsung's latest slates. We don't have a lot of details here, but it looks a heck of a lot like the dock for the original Tab. AT&T demos speedy LTE, calls 28.8Mbps downloads realistic for real people
GigaOM got to peek inside inside AT&T's Foundry innovation center in Texas this week, and the tour came with a special treat -- a first glimpse at how AT&T's upcoming LTE network might perform when the carrier flips the switch later this year. Is it possible? AT&T drops lower in customer satisfaction survey
It's a bit of a surprise. AT&T has dropped below Sprint in consumer ratings, at least according to the American Customer Satisfaction Index, as reported by the Associated Press. Both T-Mobile and AT&T are ranked at the bottom, which makes you wonder about the wisdom of the announced sale of T-Mobile to AT&T. Apple patent application suggests partial storage of music to speed up streaming
Could Apple's forthcoming cloud-based music service have a leg up in speed compared to its competitors? It might if a recently published patent application from the company actually pans out. It suggests that just a snippet of the beginning of a song (or movie, for that matter) could be stored locally on a device, and then be synced to the complete version in the cloud, which would let you begin playback "immediately" rather than having to wait for the usual buffering to take place. Foodish takes the calorie counting out of meal tracking
We've looked at various food journals for iOS in the past, and Foodish is the latest entry into this market. It's a food diary that focuses more on providing you a visual record of what you've eaten rather than counting calories.
It's pretty easy to use and has an attractive UI. Launch the app, tap the add button and take a picture of your food or drink. You can group these into meals or snacks, and select whether or not you think you've made a good food choice by tapping a facial expression. You can share the pictures of your meal via Facebook or Twitter.
It's a good, basic program to use if you want to keep a food diary but don't care to count calories. Personally, I gravitate toward more feature-laden programs, such as Lose It (free)
