Square and Apple have plans for Monday

If you follow @jack, otherwise known as Twitter co-founder and current Square CEO Jack Dorsey, then you'll know that at about 2 PM EDT today, he tweeted the cryptic Instagram (a company he's invested in) message and photo shown at right. A square with apples in it -- that's pretty obvious there, Jack. Square card readers are currently selling in Apple retail stores, but it appears that there's more to the story. The company has a press conference scheduled for 10 AM PDT at its headquarters in San Francisco, and Dorsey's hint looks like a not-so-subtle message that the two companies are going to announce something big. I speculated yesterday that

Hulu Plus on TiVo promos pop up in stores and online, suggest launch soon

Although TiVo announced it would offer Hulu Plus back in September we're still waiting for it to arrive on those Premiere DVRs. Twitter user @dlayphoto spotted these materials in their local Best Buy promising six months of the $7.99 / month service for free with the purchase of a new box -- with a new price tag -- although it's hard to see if this will apply to existing users as well. The URL on the cards leads to a (now deactivated, but larger screenshots are over at Zatz Not Funny) page where TiVo owners can input their

Square's Jack Dorsey hints at possible direct Apple tie-in

Square head and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey dropped a possible clue as to a deal with Apple through a cryptic Twitter update mid-Saturday. Saying just "Apple @Square," he linked to an Instagram photo of a plate of cut apples in the shape of the Square logo. Dorsey mostly makes work-related posts and isn't likely to have posted it solely for entertainment.

HP gives TouchSmart 610 a second crack, this time with Sandy Bridge CPU options

HP may have announced its TouchSmart 610 all-in-one just a shade too soon for it to ship with Core 2011 processors, but that doesn't mean the company was above pushing out a refresh just a few months later. Now, this 23-inch beast is on sale with a variety of quad-core Core i5 and Core i7 Sandy Bridge CPUs. To recap, what makes the 610 special is its rigid hinge, which allows the 1080p display to slide down so that it's face-up, and nearly flat at a 60-degree angle -- a more ergonomic position for poking 'round the TouchSmart software while standing. Apple Store iPhone app getting custom-order Macs

Last-minute hints overnight have given clues as to the revamped iPhone app as part of the Apple Store 2.0 overhaul. Tips had the app (when updated, App Store) getting the same custom ordering options as on the website, including both the actual hardware configurations as well as AppleCare, One to One appointments, and extras like printers. The MacRumors contacts didn't catch other details, but earlier slips had pointed to it letting users flag a store specialist and would be more aware of the user's location.

Why Apple is trademarking Thunderbolt and why Sony might be left out

Thunderbolt (formerly known as Light Peak) may have been developed by Intel, but it's Apple that's been snatching up all the trademark glory. The company first filed in November of 2010 in Jamaica, then followed up in February of this year by securing the rights to the name in Canada, before registering similar claims in Europe, China, and now the US. This raised some interesting questions about Intel's claim to be the exclusive trademark holder (see the more coverage link) and whether or not other companies would be able to use the Thunderbolt brand. Intrigued, we did a little digging and you'll find wha

HTC Evo 3D, View 4G available for pre-order at Sprint

Sprint customers holding out for the HTC Evo 3D can now inch slightly closer to that glasses-free display -- without dropping by RadioShack. The carrier has confirmed that you can reserve the WiMAX handset by visiting a Sprint-owned retail store and plunking down $50 for a gift card. There's still no word on when you'll be able to get the device in-hand (and the 3D's exclusive carrier is mum on pricing), but, if you don't mind reserving a phone without any hint as to how much you'll eventually need to pay, then Sprint seems happy enough to swap your Grant for a spot on the list.

BudgetBook for iPad is sexy but a little too simple

I've never been fond of managing my finances manually. It seems like most of the solutions are either too complex and time consuming or too simplistic and unhelpful. MoneyBook from noidentity has been a permanent resident in a folder on my iPhone where I store great apps for inspiration, but without an iPad app, I've never considered it an ideal solution for my needs. Bookeen does real time web browsing and scrolling on standard E Ink screen (video)

Bookeen has already taunted us with an E Ink Pearl display hacked to playback clips of chubby bunnies without so much as a hicup, now it's showing off web browsing and scrolling on the same screen. It's a little stuttery, as you can see in the video below, but considering this is the same tech found in the Kindle it's quite impressive. The trick is accomplished using custom software and off the shelf hardware -- in other words, nothing terribly fancy. So, while we sit here letting out exasperated sighs with ev

Apple Order Status system down until May 22

A few readers have tipped us that Apple's order status system for its online store is down until May 22. As you can see from the image above, the familiar sticky note is accompanied by text informing users of the downtime. We do want to note that Apple's online store is open and fully operational. It is only the order status system, which allows users to check the status of current orders, that will not be back online until May 22. Curiously, the order status system also went offline just over a year ago.

Toggling a privacy mode on the device would narrow the cone of light so that someone couldn't spy on the screen while still giving the owner a clear view when looking head-on.
