I am starting to use my iPad to score my son's baseball games, doing the scoring from the dugout/field. Any suggestions on a good case? Would really like something waterproof or pretty air tight. Some of the fields can be pretty dusty in the summer and I don't want the dust getting into the iPad and I don't want to have to worry about some rain drops.

Gilt Taste looking to introduce cooking app with "motion-activated recipes"
Our friends over at TechCrunch got the scoop on Gilt Taste, a high-end online grocery retailer that doubles as an online magazine. What's intriguing, however, is an iPad app that it's currently developing.
The folks behind Gilt Taste are working to perfect "motion-activated recipes" using the iPad 2's camera. Instead of touching an iPad while you're cooking, you would just make a hand gesture in front of the screen to go through the recipe. Those who use Microsoft's Kinect are familiar with the technology.
This sort of technology makes perfect sense, and it's the sort of app that I think the iPad 2 is made for. As someone who used to get

Aperture bald für iOS?
Die Bildverwaltungssoftware Aperture könnte neusten Patenten zufolge demnächst auch für iOS erhältlich sein. Die Standard-Fotos-Applikation auf dem iPad und iPhone sind zwar zum Betrachten und Browsen von Fotos wunderbar geeignet, aber professionelles Verwalten lässt sich damit schlecht durchführen. Mit Aperture würde sich das ändern, so könnte man Fotos direkt auf dem iPad und vielleicht auch dem iPhone editieren und sortieren. HTC HD7S coming to AT&T on June 5 for $200
Do we sense just a wee bit of jealousy here? Not to be outdone by Verizon's Windows Phone darling, AT&T swiftly reacted to the Trophy's official launch by whipping the long-expected HTC HD7S out on Facebook and stamping a seal of approval on it. News: Verizon CFO Shammo reiterates claim of CDMA + GSM for next iPhone

Xfinity TV on your iPod, iPhone but Wi-Fi only
Version 1.5 of Comcast's Xfinity TV app for iPhone and iPod touch arrived on the App Store yesterday. The updated software allows Comcast customers to watch movies and TV shows on their iPhones or iPod touches while connected to any Wi-Fi network.
Comcast added on-demand video streaming functionality to the Xfinity TV app for iPad in February. Sick and tired of the Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0's slow-as-molasses 80MB/sec read speeds? Group looking to form Apple Retail Workers Union
Today, we received an email from an organization calling itself the Apple Retail Workers Union. The organization is trying to garner enough support among Apple retail employees to unionize. From the email:
On May 19, 2001, Apple opened the doors to its first retail stores. It encouraged people to "shop different."
Ten years later, the people of Apple are coming together to "work different."

Verizon CFO: Next iPhone works on both CDMA and GSM networks

Willard Boyle, man who revolutionized digital imaging, dies at 86
We have some sad news to share with you today: Willard Boyle, the man who created the imaging technology behind everything from digital cameras to barcode scanners, has died at the age of 86. In 2009, Boyle shared a Nobel Prize in physics for inventing the CCD, which allowed people to capture images in digital format for the first time. It all began way back in 1969, when Boyle and his future co-Laureate, George E. Smith, started laying the groundwork for the CCD while working at Bell Laboratories. HTC Omega und HTC Eternity: Die ersten Windows Phone 7 Mango Handys?

Und schon dreht die Gerüchteküche heiß. Auf Wmpoweruser.com werden die ersten Windows Phone 7 Mango Handys von HTC verkündet. Ein Tipster hat sogar Spezifikationen. Das HTC Eternity soll mit 4,7 Zoll (massiv!) AMOLED und Weitwinkel 8 Megapixel Kamera mit LED Blitz kommen und obendrein DLNA verstehen und einen microHDMI Ausgang haben. Das HTC Omega ist etwas reduzierter aber hat ähnliche Funktionen nur mit einem SLCD 3,8 Zoll Bildschirm. Beide laufen auf 1,5 GHz Prozessoren. Klingt verlockend. Aber ob es stimmt werden wir wohl erst später erfahren.

Apple's cloud music service could address buffering with local files
A patent has emerged which shows how Apple could address the buffering lag time that is a frequent bane to streaming media users. In the patent, Apple describes storing just small segments of media files locally on a user's device. These segments would be the beginning of a song, for example, and would begin to play immediately while the device buffers the rest of the song from the cloud servers. Using this method there would be no lag time between when a user taps on a song to play it on his iPhone and when the song actually begins to play.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, Arc getting Android 2.3.4 update next week, Facebook integration in tow
There's still no confirmation as to when it will be headed to the soon-to-be-released Verizon Xperia Play, but Recombu is reporting that at least some iterations of the phone will be getting upgraded to Android 2.3.4 next week, at which point the Xperia Arc will also get bumped up to the same version. Yahoo rolled out a new Messenger app for iOS that includes support for the iPad 2. The tablet-optimized app will let you make voice and video calls using the front-facing camera. Yahoo Messenger has a wide install base and you will be able to make video calls to any device with a camera and a compatible version of the messaging app. Besides video calling, Yahoo Messenger will also send SMS messages for free. MacDefender malware protection and removal guide
The MacDefender malware has been wreaking havoc for Mac users all over the world. The attack, which displays a message stating that your machine has been infected with viruses that only a "MacDefender" app can remove, has been spreading rapidly. As we stated earlier, MacDefender doesn't infect Macs with a virus, nor does it run a keylogger as a background process on your machine. It's simply trying to scare users into providing credit card information by registering an unneeded piece of software. Fujitsu to launch 7-inch Android tablet later this year, might be priced lower than $400
Fresh off the Japanese launch of its LifeBook TH40/D Windows 7 tablet, it appears that Fujitsu is gearing up to release a new seven-inch Android slate. Das betrifft Hardcover und Taschenbücher zusammen. Für 100 verkaufte gedruckte Bücher gehen bei Amazon jetzt 105 E-Books über die virtuelle Ladentheke. Den Amazonas freuts. Intel Senior Vice president Tom Kilroy revealed that Intel is working closely with Apple on future products. This relationship is so cozy that Kilroy claims Apple even "helps shape our roadmap." Apple is an attractive customer for Intel as the Cupertino company is often regarded as forward-thinking and an influencer.

Apple, China Mobile supposedly reach agreement on 4G iPhone
A story at MarketWatch suggests that Apple and China Mobile have reached a consensus on a 4G iPhone. Unfortunately, China Mobile Chairman Wang Jianzhou was stingy with the details.

Kindle books officially take over print sales at Amazon, pulp starts making retirement plans
The Kindle has been a huge success, no doubt about that, but we are continually amazed at just how big a success it has become. Amazon too, apparently. The company just issued a press release to announce that digital book sales have now exceeded sales of all print titles, both hardcover and paperback combined. iPhone location data to be closely regulated in Europe
The fuss over the storage of location data by iOS has crossed international waters. The EU data protection advisory panel, a watchdog group that advises the European Commission, has said that location data is personal data. This ruling may lead to further restrictions limiting how this data may be used by Apple, advertisers and third-party applications.
The panel further recommended that companies need to get permission from smartphone owners before collecting location data and should be clear about how this data is being used. They group also suggests location services should be switched off by default. These proposals may become the early framework for a new law regulating location data in the EU

Acht Chinesen haben vor einem New Yorker Bezirksgericht Klage gegen Baidu eingereicht. Zwei Sicherheitsforscher haben einen für die Sicherheitskonferenz TakeDown geplanten Vortrag mit dem Titel "Chain Reactions - Hacking Scada" über Angriffe auf kritische Infrastrukturen abgesagt, weil sie von US-Behörden und Siemens aufgefordert wurden, ihre Arbeit nicht öffentlich zu präsentieren. "Wir wurden sehr freundlich gebeten, davon abzusehen, die Informationen zu diesem Zeitpunkt preiszugeben", sagte Dillon Beresford, Sicherheitsanalyst bei NSS Labs, gegenüber ZDNet. So, we already have a street-legal Tron lightcycle, but why stop there? After weeks of work, Bods Mods just completed its 40-inch long lightcycle PC, complete with ATX motherboard, liquid cooling, and plenty of blue light strips. EMI joins Warner Music Group in Apple cloud music service
Sources have told CNET that EMI has signed a deal with Apple to license its music for cloud-based services. EMI joins Warner Music Group, which signed on with Apple for cloud-based music services last month. The remaining two major labels, Sony and Universal, are expected to sign similar deals with Apple as early as next week.
Getting all four major music labels to sign on to a cloud-based service is seen as a serious win and a another vote of confidence for Apple's rumored cloud digital distribution services.

New phishing email pretends to be from Apple's online store
We've received several reports today of an email making the rounds that's very likely a phishing scam. The message content is cleverly designed to look like it's coming from the Apple Store, and clicking on any of the links will take you to a website that's even superficially similar to Apple's online store.
If you get this email, don't buy anything from its associated website, as there are a few dead giveaways to the inauthenticity of the message. First, the message sender will come up as a random string of characters followed by @live.com. All messages from the Apple Store should have apple.com at the end, and nothing else. The URL that you're directed to if you click anything in the message will eventually resolve to appledownload.com instead of t

Apple setting up another data center in Silicon Valley
We haven't even officially been told what's up with the data center in North Carolina, but apparently Apple wants more -- the company is also setting up another new data center much closer to home in Silicon Valley. The 11,000 square foot setup is smaller than the big complex in North Carolina, which is said to be over 500,000 square feet (with about a fifth of that as actual server space). But the Silicon Valley center will still be pulling its own load when the 2.2 megawatts of critical power load comes online in September of this year. Playboy archives coming to iPad tomorrow
If you've been waiting for those Playboy archives ever since we heard about them in January, the wait is almost over. App Advice says the web app containing all back issues of the famously controversial gentleman's magazine will finally be ready to go on the iPad tomorrow, for a subscription price of $8 a month, of course. Back in March, an iPad app was released, but it's since disappeared from the App Store, perhaps because of Apple's restrictions on adult content there. Of course, the web app has no such restrictions, so interested subscribers will be able to browse all of Playboy's 50-plus years of content.

DirecTV is field testing RVU, will offer satellite TV without individual receivers in October

Apple moving to claim 'Thunderbolt' trademark
In a surprising move, Apple has been revealed to be making claims to the Thunderbolt trademark in the U.S. and Canada, based on an earlier filing last November in Jamaica. 4th and Battery's second game is Candy Train
All right, so maybe Unpleasant Horse wasn't quite the success that 4th and Battery would have liked to kick the new PopCap sub-studio off with, but that's kind of the point -- the idea of 4th and Battery is for the company to experiment a little more, rather than having every single game they release live up to the PopCap reputation. And that means faster releases as well -- the company's second game is due out on the App Store this week, and it's called Candy Train.

The Life's Good gang warned us with the written word about its super fantastic, ultra-high resolution Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching (AH-IPS) displays. Of course, written resolution claims merely provide verisimilitude; viewing is the only way to discern their veracity. 1080p camera sensor could be in the next iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
As Engadget reports, OmniVision Technologies, Apple's supplier of CMOS sensors for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, has unveiled a 5MP camera sensor that is capable of recording 1080p video. The sensor, named OV5690, is thin enough to fit in the iPod touch and iPad -- unlike the current 5MP OmniVision CMOS sensor which will only fit in the iPhone 4s body.
The OV5690 sensor would be a huge boon to the iPad and iPod touch, whose cameras are currently capped at less than 1 MP and shoot video in 720p. As for the next iPhone, the OV5690 sensor would definitely fit in it, but that would mean the iPhone's camera resolution would be limited to 5MP -- the current resolution of the
