Microsoft announces Windows Azure Toolkit for iOS
Microsoft has released a developer's Windows Azure toolkit for iOS. The toolkit contains resources which make it easy for iOS developers to use Azure, the cloud-based building and hosting platform that allows developers to create apps and host them on Microsoft's datacenters.
The iOS toolkit includes a compiled Objective-C library for services like push notifications, authN/authZs, and storage, as well as full source code for the objective-C library. Interested developers can download the toolkit through github here.

Older iOS devices outselling newer Android devices
The first generation iPad and the iPhone 3GS are currently outselling most newer Android devices, according to a Canaccord Genuity report. The report details the results of retail channel sales checks done at Verizon and AT&T stores. It found Apple's iPhone 4 to be the most popular-selling device "by far" but, interestingly, it also found that the first-generation iPad and the older iPhone 3GS usually outsells newer Android tablets and smartphones.
"Interestingly, our April checks indicated continued strong demand for the iPhone 3GS at AT&T and iPad 1 at Verizon, as these older generation products with reduced prices often outsold new Android products," the Canaccord report reads. "We believe this highlights Apple's significant competiti

Peg lamp lets us spend less time screwing in light bulbs, more time talking about them (video)
We know what you're thinking, but the Jolly Green Giant didn't drop something on the way to hang out his laundry. Designed by Steffi Min for her industrial design senior thesis, the Peg lamp looks and functions like an oversized clothespin, directly clipping onto a standard light bulb. As you can see in the video after the break, changing a bulb takes only a second or two, and there's almost no risk of broken glass. We don't expect a clothes pin connector to appear as a retail product anytime soon, but if we can build our own humanoid robots, we can probably find a way to slide an oversized rubber band around two wedges of wood.

Samsung rechnet mit gutem Galaxy-S-II-Verkauf

WatchESPN app is now on Android, go-anywhere live TV streams still restricted to just a few providers
The WatchESPN app is now available for Android devices, bringing the same live video streams of ESPN channels it featured at its debut on iOS last month. The interface appears to be equivalent, however running it will require the installation of Adobe AIR on your Android 2.2 or higher device (no tablet optimizations yet and there's no Honeycomb mention in the press release after the break, but it's probably on the list after the iPad-optimized version drops later this month). Dear Aunt TUAW,
Help! I can't install anything after my Xcode install failed. Every time I try, Installer tells me that it's waiting for other installations to complete and then it just sits there forever.
What can I do? I've tried rebooting, I've tried killing the installer daemon. I'm at my wits end.

YouTube will add 3,000 streaming movies for renting, but won't say which ones (yet)
In the midst of a blog post welcoming us to "the future of video" head of YouTube Salar Kamangar confirms that starting today it will add around 3,000 new movie titles for rental in the US, along with reviews and behind the scenes extras. Comcast will open up its video on-demand to TiVo Premiere DVRs and offer them for installation

Skype pushes update to Mac client for security flaw
As we mentioned Saturday, a critical vulnerability in the Skype 5 client for Mac could have exposed your machine to attack from malicious contacts (the vector for attack is an instant message, which you only can receive by default from people you already 'trust' in Skype). With no exploit active in the wild, the Skype Mac team patched the application to close the hole back on April 14 but did not push out the update to all users.
As of today, there's a new hotfix (5.1.0.935) that is being provided for all Skype 5 users; it closes the security holes and also fixes a few bugs, including video issues on

You don't get to be Microsoft's Principal Researcher without a strong sense of technology and design history, and Bill Buxton certainly has plenty of evidence to show he's well qualified in that respect. Apple wertvollste Marke mit 153 Milliarden $
Die Marketing- und Werbung-Gruppe WPP hat in ihrer alljährlichen „BrandZ“-Studie die wertvollsten Marken der Welt errechnet und kam zu dem Ergebnis, dass Apple mit 153 Milliarden $, also ungefähr 107 Milliarden € an der Spitze steht, mehr oder weniger dicht gefolgt von Google mit 112 Milliarden $ beziehungsweise knapp 78 Milliarden € und IBM mit 100 Milliarden $, also knapp 71 Milliarden €. Apple hat im Gegensatz zu letztjährigen Ergebnissen ganze 84% zugenommen, IBM „nur“ 17% und Google verlor 2%, seit 2006 hat Apple unglaubliche 859% an Wert gewonnen. Aspiring musicians with a gentle touch should check out this project from the Australian group behind the Wallee mount for the iPad. The designers are developing rubberized accessories, branded Pix & Stix, to be used with GarageBand on the iPad 2. The project includes a pair of drum sticks and a guitar pick that lets you use the iPad like a real instrument. Both the sticks and the guitar pick include electro-conductive rubber tips compatible with the iPad's capacitive touchscreen display.

Relax everybody, unlike its antonymous quadrocopter cousins, this six-rotor drone isn't here to kill, only to count plants. Researchers from Oregon State University are hanging cameras from reasonably-priced RC aircraft to help nurseries track inventory -- a task often performed by workers wandering the orchards and keeping tally by hand. Image analysis software automates the process and, with the addition of other sensors (such as infrared), it could one day be used to spot irrigation problems, identify diseased trees, and estimate crop yield. The old saying "as American as baseball and apple pie" may have to be amended to include Apple and its retail stores. According to an article by Philip Elmer-DeWitt, Apple may be more popular than America's favorite pastime. Softbank profits surge thanks to the iPhone and iPad
Japan's number three wireless carrier, Softbank, reported record profits thanks to the success of the iPhone and the iPad. Net profit for the quarter ending in March climbed to Y47.41 billion, up from Y1.85 billion in the same quarter last year. Softbank's ARPU (average revenue per user) also increased year over year from Y4,070 to Y4,210, an increase attributed to the lucrative data subscriptions of iPhone 4 and iPad owners.

PlayStation Network weiter offline: Wiederherstellung verzögert sich
Sony hat den Neustart des PlayStation Network auf unbestimmte Zeit verschoben. Das teilte Sony-Sprecher Patrick Seybold in einem Blogeintrag mit. Sein Unternehmen führe immer noch Sicherheitstests durch, weswegen das System nicht wie geplant wieder zur Verfügung stehe. Samsung überholt Nokia auf dem westeuropäischen Handymarkt
Auf dem westeuropäischen Handymarkt liegt Samsung laut Zahlen von IDC mit 29,3 Prozent und 13,2 Millionen gelieferten Mobiltelefonen nun auf Platz eins. Amazon Cloud Player now streams music on the iPhone and iPad
We're not sure how long this has been possible, but at launch, Amazon's Cloud Player refused to stream songs from your Cloud Drive in Mobile Safari, with the only alternative being selecting 'Download' instead of play. Audio battlefield would prepare troops for combat or a typical Slayer concert
Ever wondered how well playing Call of Duty at maximum volume mimics a real combat experience? Researchers at the Missouri University of Science and Technology must have asked a similar question, because they've built a 64-speaker surround-sound audio battlefield designed to train new troops. The system reproduces screaming fighter jets, rumbling tanks, and persistent gunfire -- all the better to accommodate recruits to the overwhelming, disorienting cacophony of warfare. Glühbirnen in die jeweilige Fassung zu drehen, ist zwar relativ einfach, aber bisweilen dennoch anstrengend, wenn es um Deckenlampen geht. Dieses Designkonzept von Steffi Min macht vieles besser: Birne statt drehen einfach anklippen, dazu gibt es die todschicke Fassung als überdimensionale Wäscheklammer. Zwar gibt es diese Lampe noch nicht zu kaufen, aber Designschmieden dürften sich nach dieser Leuchte die Finger lecken. Davon gehen wir doch mal aus. Mehr in dem Video nach dem Break.

Cipher Prime is the developer behind the former Daily iOS App choice Auditorium, and the company has returned to the platform with Pulse: Volume One, an iPad game that has you playing with both rhythm and sound. The idea starts off simple -- hit the notes on the screen as the radiating circular pulse hits them from the center. But as with most music games, things start slow and build up quickly until you're frantically trying to tag all of the notes in their wacky patterns to match up with the song as it plays.

Apple ist teuerste Marke der Welt
Apple hat Google auf der BrandZ-Rangliste der weltweit wertvollsten Marken überholt. Nach Ansicht der Analysten von Millward Brown Optimor, den Machern der Liste, stieg der Wert der Marke "Apple" 2010 unter anderem wegen des iPad-Erfolgs um 84 Prozent auf 153 Milliarden Dollar (106 Milliarden Euro). Sony: Wiederherstellung des PlayStation Network verzögert sich
Sony hat den Neustart des PlayStation Network auf unbestimmte Zeit verschoben. Das teilte Sony-Sprecher Patrick Seybold in einem Blogeintrag mit. Google aktualisiert Chrome 11 und integrierten Flash-Player
Google hat seinen Web-Browser in einer neuen Version veröffentlicht, mit der einige Fehler behoben und der integrierte Flash Player 10.2 aktualisiert wurden. So wird nun laut Google die Lesezeichenleiste korrekt aktualisiert, wenn in der Lesezeichenverwaltung zugehörige Einträge gelöscht werden. Ein weiteres Problem hat man in der Mac-Version beim Fokus von Flash-Inhalten behoben, weswegen auch der intergrierte Player aktualisiert werden

Bad news for Brammo's electric bikers: according to Asphalt and Rubber, word has it that the company's flagship Empulse motorbike will now be delayed to 2012, citing CEO Craig Bramscher's decision to integrate a certain new technology before launch. Google hat damit begonnen, in Usertests einigen Anwendern eine überarbeitete Ergebnisseite anzuzeigen. Neben dezenten Pastellfarbtönen wird auch mehr Raum geboten, was die Neuauflage nicht dramatisch, aber doch deutlich von der bekannten Darstellung unterscheidet.

Erfinder des THX-Soundsystems bald bei Apple?
Bis dato hat Apple den Kopfhörer und Lautsprechermarkt der Konkurrenz überlassen. Auch ist immer wieder Kritik an den in Apple Geräten eingebauten Lautsprechern (iPad, MacBook) und Audio-Verstärkern zu hören. Dies könnte sich in absehbarer Zukunft ändern.

HP unveils the Pavilion dv4, Envy 14 with Sandy Bridge, and a redesigned Mini 210
With a Sandy Bridge refresh, a new 14-inch mainstream laptop, and a redesigned netbook, HP's latest crop of consumer systems offers a little something for everyone. HP launches DataPass to sell prepaid 3G data plans, service piggybacks on Sprint's network
It looks like HP is getting into the prepaid data game. The company just announced DataPass, a solution that lets you purchase 3G service from your laptop. The service is HP-branded, and that isn't just marketing hype -- the company bought excess spectrum from Sprint and is setting its own prices, effectively turning the PC maker into an MVNO. The no-contract plans start at $5 for a modest 75MB, which HP says is enough for about five hours of use, and stretch up to $30 for 1GB. Look for it as an option across the company's lineup of business notebooks with the Qualcomm Gobi un2400 radio module.

Comscore report finds widening Android lead in US smartphone market, largely at RIM's expense
The percentage shift in the chart above tells most of the story here. According to Comscore's latest report, Android's share of the US smartphone market grew an impressive six percent in the three-month period ending in March to land at 34.7 percent, and RIM took the biggest hit as a result, slipping 4.5 points to a share of 27.1 percent. That's still enough to keep it ahead of Apple, however, which held its own with a slight gain to 25.5 percent.
