HTC Droid Incredible 2 smiles pretty for the camera, shows off its fresh VZW tat
It hit Verizon's system a few weeks ago and now it's hitting a white corner for some pictures, showing VZW branding no less. It's the US-spec version of the Incredible S, said to be running Android 2.2 but word is that Gingerbread will be on-tap before it ships. The rest of the specs on this four-inch slab line up with what we've learned before, meaning the only question now is the all-impo

iPad 2 shipping times slip again, this time to 3-4 weeks
When Apple started selling the iPad 2 online early yesterday morning, shipping times were within 3-5 days. Within hours, those same shipping times slipped to a long 2-3 weeks. Now, just over 24 hours since the iPad went on sale, iPads 2 shipping times from the online Apple Store are now sitting at 3-4 weeks. This applies to both the Wi-Fi and 3G models.
Given the massive lines from last night, and the fact that many people went home without being able to get an iPad (or the one they wanted), I'm not surprised at all surprise

New phase-change memory gets boost from carbon nanotubes, puts PRAM claims to shame
We've been hearing about the potential flash killer for years, and now a team of University of Illinois engineers is claiming that its new phase-change technology could make the PRAM of our dreams look quaint by comparison. Like so many groundbreaking discoveries of late, carbon nanotubes are at the heart of the this new mode of memory, which uses 100x less power than its phase-change predecessors. So, how does it work? Basically, the team replaced metal wires with carbon nanotubes to pump electricity t

GarageBand for iPad: A look under the hood
Apple's release of GarageBand for iPad has, in a small way, rocked my world. There have been a few admirable attempts at multi-track recorders, but this US$4.99 app from Apple takes the cake. The best part is that it's not just a musicians tool; anybody with half an ear for a tune can start composing great-sounding tracks from the moment they launch the app.
When I was a kid, I had a Tascam 4-track, an acoustic guitar and a general MIDI synth. I spent hours, even days at a time playing with them. If I'd had this back then, I might never have left the house. With an array of built-in instruments and an eight-track recorder, you don't even need to plug anything in to start rocking. That's not to say you can't, I've had d

Dear Aunt TUAW: How can I tame iOS with my Apple Wireless Keyboard?
Dear Aunt TUAW,
It would give me great comfort if I could rest my head on your bosom of knowledge and have you answer this troubling question.
Auntie, why isn't there better support for the Bluetooth keyboard on the iPad? I mean love my keyboard (no not as much as you Auntie silly) but all I can use it for is typing.
I mean, I should be able to use the navigation keys in the Safari browser? Like scrolling up/down/etc. Hotkeys when in the Springboard or in an app? How about games using the keyboard for controls (ASWZ) as an option? None of that works.
I know, Auntie. You're gonna bring up attach rates, but instead can you please talk to Uncle Steve and have him get on this?
Your loving and devoted Nephew,

Chris Bangle, former BMW designer, bringing his deconstructivist ways to Samsung devices?
That's the E65 7 Series up there, considered by many to be as ugly a car as they come. It's the product of one Chris Bangle, Chief Designer at BMW for most of the '90s and '00s, who strove to give cars a futuristic, deconstructivist design that didn't always find favor among car buyers who were still stuck in an orderly present. Now we actually are in the future and, well, that rear-end still isn't looking any better, but Bangle did pave the way for more dramatic stylings in modern cars. He stepped away from the auto industry two years ago and now we're hearing that he's movi

Liveblog from SXSW: Can indie iPhone game development survive?
SXSW Interactive has just begun and I'm sitting in a panel with a group of rock star game devs (well, some are more designers, and Alan Knitwoski is not a dev, but a business guy): Stephen Broumley, Peter Franco, David Kalina, Heather Kelley, Alan Knitowski. They will attempt to answer the question of whether independent game developers can still make games profitably.
First question: What is indie? If you are a small shop and acquired by EA (as happened to Franco), are you still indie?
Jeff Broumley defines it as "funded yourself." Part-time developer David Kalina says it means you are in control of your own decisions (as opposed to a publisher or investor). Heather says it also represents a spirit -- being able to do what you want to do and having financial control. For Knitowski, it's also about bein

This new mode of production cuts back on cost significantly, allowing physicians to throw away the little guys after routing around in your intestines. According to the camera's creators, their

Now that many of you have collected and used your second generation iPad tablets for a few hours, we're starting to see the inevitable reports of defects. Thus far, two issues have bubbled to the surface. The first issue -- yellow spots beneath the LCD glass -- is reminiscent of the same fresh-from-the-factory iPhone 4 issue that resolved itself just as soon as the bonding agent used for the LCD glass had time to evaporate. The second issue, which is being conflated with the first, is related to light bleeding through from the outer edges of the LCD panel. The bleeding is most noticeable when watching a movie or using an app with a dark

iPhone navigation in the back country
I've written before about navigating with the iPhone, and the differences between having the maps on board your phone versus downloading them over the air.

It turns out that the company is already testing out an NFC-based check-in system at its HQ, which lets those with a suitable phone (such as a Nexus S) share their location simply by tapping it against a blue dot on the wall. Unfortunately, there's no indications on any plans to actually expand it beyond its own HQ, although you can bet that it's pretty high up on the list of inevitable things or the company.

Tinkerer-extraordinaire roebeet is the man to thank, granting Xoom owners the ability to read media from USB drives, essentially giving you a limitless amount of storage

iPad 2 first impressions: Steve Sande
For those of you who were watching at 7 PM ET today as I was livestreaming the iPad 2 line and purchase process at the Aspen Grove Apple Store in Littleton, Colorado, I ended up buying a 32 GB white iPad 2 with AT&T 3G. The lines at Aspen Grove were longer for the iPad 2 than for probably any Apple launch I've seen at this location. I'd estimate that by the time 5 PM rolled around, there were 400 - 450 people in line.
However, my six-hour wait in line with fellow TUAW blogger Erica Sadun was fruitful, as both of us came away with iPads in our

How would you change Dell's Inspiron Duo?
We aren't ones to knock a company for throwing convention to the wind, and frankly, we were downright excited to see how Dell's Inspiron Duo would revolutionize our mobile lives. During our own review, we found the design to be top-notch and the build quality to be world-class, but the sluggish performance, annoying software overlay and lackluster UI didn't exactly earn it any brownie points. Enough about us, though -- this is your time to shine. If you bit the bullet and picked one of these multifaceted laptops up, we're interested in hearing how you'd change things. Would you ditch the swiveling LCD? Would you prefer a dual-boot setup as found on the ViewPad 10? How's the hardwar

Unsung iPad 2 feature: New SIM ejector tool
By now we all know about the iPad 2's A5 processor, its redesigned case, its front and rear-facing cameras. Here's a feature I haven't seen anyone mention yet: the iPad 2 has a new SIM ejector tool. You can see the new tool on the right side of this photo, compared with the original ejector tool on the left.
The new tool looks much less like a custom bit of forged (liquid?) metal and more like a heavily-modified paper clip. There's a small gap in the metal between the pokey bit at the end and the part you grasp, and overall the metal looks to have a much duller (some might even call it cheaper) finish.
It's a minuscule alteration that most people might never even notice, especially given that you might use this tool perhaps once or twice over the life of your device. I

Twitter to developers: we want to own the pipes, water, and faucets, but feel free to make soap
An announcement by Ryan Sarver, a member of the platform team at Twitter, could spell bad news for makers of third-party apps that access the growing social network and new ones looking to get in on the action. In a move that will inevitably cause quite a ruckus among developers and tweeters alike, Twitter has essentially decided that no new apps should be developed "that mimic or reproduce the mainstream Twitter consumer client experience." He goes on to say that existing apps will continue to function, but that the bar will be raised in terms of quality and consistency. Specifically, he cites differences across apps in terminology for core functions like @-replying and trending topics as

Long iPad lines continue at some Apple Stores, many go home empty-handed
As midnight approaches on the East Coast of the US, long lines for the iPad 2 remain at some Apple Stores. The image above shows the line at the 5th Avenue store in New York City just before 11 PM local time, with dozens of people still waiting outside the store well after nightfall.
Meanwhile, on the West Coast, 9 to 5 Mac reports severe supply constraints in certain models of iPad 2, with many line waiters either having to pick a model other than the one they originally sought, or worse, going home empty-handed altogether. Mark Gurman reports that Apple doesn't seem to be limiting device per person purchases, with one customer walking out with six AT&T-model iPad 2s.

BlackBerry PlayBook launch-date palooza: tablet to finally drop in mid-April?
A round of leaks today has potentially pinpointed the second week of April as the launch window for RIM's slick seven-inch PlayBook. An email purportedly sent out by Sears up in Canada confirms earlier echoes, informing buyers that the device will up for grabs on April 10, with preorders possibly beginning as soon as tomorrow. On top of that, an image from Staples' backend sent to Crackberry pegs a 33-day count down to start on the 15th, which lines up nicely with another leaked shot denoting an "ad date" of April 17. We've also received an unconfirmed tip from a Sprint rep saying that the PlayBook would be landing on the 15th, along with an a smattering of cases and a stylus? Finally, we've been sent shots of some PlayBook

Extra-long iPad 2 lineups lead to estimates of 500,000 sales
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster saw headcounts from long iPad 2 lineups as a sign that Apple may have had breakthrough launch day sales. He believed 400,000 to 500,000 iPads had sold based on increases at multiple Apple stores, especially flagships. The lineup at the 5th Avenue store in New York City had 1,109 in line on opening versus 730 for the original iPad; Minneapolis' Mall of America store more than tripled its lineup, from 105 to 334.

iFixit tears down iPad 2
We love the iFixit team and their singleminded dedication to getting their mitts on the latest, greatest Apple gear -- just so they can take it all to pieces. Tonight's piece de disassemblement is, of course, the iPad 2; you can see their complete takeapart here.
Not too many surprises in the new build, although now the front panel is glued to the case (on the original iPad, it was clipped in), making it harder to disassemble. The new bits of hardware (cameras and gyroscope, along with the magnets and sensor for the Smart Cover) were all identified, cataloged and photographed.

Windows Phone 7 marketplace hits 10,000 apps, WP7 updates still way outnumbered
It's a milestone in the life of any OS: the day you reach that magical 10,000 app number. Windows Phone 7 is the latest kindred soul to achieve the feat, accomplishing the task in just over four and a half months. For some perspective, it took the Android Market 11 months to hit five figures, and 142 days for the iTunes app store to do the same. Microsoft's been adding around 1,000 apps a week since it hit 5k right before the New Year, and as of late that rate's been picking up. Congrats WP7 devs, you've officially issued more software updates than Microsoft itself. Your move Microsoft, we're still waiting for copy & paste.

iPad 2, Smart Cover unboxing and early hands-on
We left the Apple store this afternoon with an iPad 2 and have given it an early shakedown along with its frequently joined-at-the-hip companion, the Smart Cover. The iPad itself instantly feels much smaller and lighter; although the dimensions haven't changed much, in practice it's much easier to hold in any orientation. The dual-core processor and extra RAM are noticeable, too, and even casual tasks like Google Maps are faster; the JavaScript improvements in iOS 4.3 are only part of the story.

It's not high-concept, as videos go: an admittedly shaky walk around the block or down the street to gauge the number of hardy souls willing to stand and wait for something they could just as easily have shipped to their front door.
Nevertheless, we salute the line-standers, and it is in their honor that we share these clips with you: a brisk linewalk at NYC's iconic 5th Avenue store, and one at the pop-up store in Austin for SxSW. Enjoy!

iFixit has an iPad 2, and they're ripping it apart
It only took a few short hours for iFixit to get its hands on an iPad 2 (the WiFi variety), and of course, they immediately started to tear it apart. It's a necessarily delicate task, but they're making progress as we speak, and here are the first things that jump out to us: there is much less open space inside the iPad 2 than the original model, and the battery is very large. There aren't any huge surprises in here internally yet, but it's got the 1GHz A5 CPU, and 16GB of Toshiba TH58NVG7D2FLA89 NAND Flash. Like we said, they're still at it with this one, and we'll update at they do. Until then

Miller, who has previously compromised an (original) MacBook Air and has since focused mostly on vulnerabilities in Webkit and Safari, used that technique again this year to compromise an iPhone 4, thus winning it. The exploit Miller used has been blocked in the release of iOS 4.3, but the vulnerability in Webkit still exists, he told ZDNet.
