Research suggests text messaging could help smokers quit
We've heard plenty about the perils of cellphones in general and text messaging in particular, but are there some instances where it might actually be good for your health? Well, sort of. Some researchers at the University of Oregon and a few other participating institutions have now found a way to pinpoint the areas of the brain that are most active in controlling the urges to smoke, and they say that information can also be predictive of real-world behavior and the individuals' ability to respond

Apple releases Java updates for Leopard and Snow Leopard
Apple today released Java updates for for Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard and Mac OS 10.5 Leopard.
Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 4 weighs in at 74 MB and requires Mac OS X 10.6.4 or later; it "delivers improved compatibility, security, and reliability by updating Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_24."
Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 9 weighs in at 119 MB and requires Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later; it "delivers improved compatibility, security, and reliability by updating J2SE 5.0 to 1.5.0_28, and updating Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_24 for 64-bit capable Intel-based Macs. J2SE 1.4.2 is no longer being updated to fix bugs or security issues and remains disabled by default in this update."

Verizon CTO: 'working through issues' with LTE phones, still on track for first half launch
No blockbusters here -- nothing that's going to give you much insight into an exact launch day for the Thunderbolt -- but Verizon CTO Tony Melone made a few comments about its LTE handset launches at a financial conference yesterday that border on the interesting. Apple posts Leopard, Snow Leopard Java updates
Apple has posted two new Mac OS X Java updates. The first, Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 4, upgrades Java SE 6 in Snow Leopard to v1.6.0_24. Apple is vague on details, but does mention that the release improves "compatibility, security, and reliability." Security-wise it copes with "multiple vulnerabilities," the most dangerous of which might allow an untrusted applet to run code outside the Java sandbox.

Rumor: Apple to hold iOS 5 and MobileMe media event in April
German Apple site Macerkopf.de is claiming via a "trusted source" that Apple is set to hold a media event sometime during the first two weeks of April in which Apple will preview iOS 5 and also launch a revamped MobileMe service. The site offers no details on the features of iOS 5 or what the MobileMe revamp might entail, but it is not unreasonable to assume Apple would be holding such an event in the near future to prep developers for the next release of iOS, which presumably will be released with the iPhone 5 in the summer.

Early mid-week shocker: research says we are overly reliant on GPS
Well, this can't be good, but it's certainly not surprising, either. Researchers have concluded that people living in developed nations have become overly reliant on satellite navigation such as GPS devices, and that the results can be dangerous. Anyone with a think tank could probably figure this one out on their own, but the research shows that such over-reliance on the devices can produce some bad results when said devices inevitably fail out. Apple rumored slating iOS 5, MobileMe event for early April
A rumor Tuesday had Apple following up the iPad 2 launch with an iOS-focused event. The gathering, which would happen at the Town Hall in Apple's Cupertino campus, would purportedly show off iOS 5 and the promised fruits of the MobileMe overhaul. Macerkopf in making the claim was told by its source that it would happen in the 14th or 15th week of 2011, putting it in the first half of April.

Black Hat security conference offers two-day Macsploitation class
Attention would-be Mac hackers and those hoping to write viruses and malware for Mac OS X! You can bone up on your Macsploitation skills at an upcoming two-day class to be held at the Black Hat security conference July 30 through August 2.

Microsoft loosens Windows Phone 7 app policies, cracks 9,000
Microsoft spurred on Windows Phone 7 developers Tuesday with policy changes as well as a milestone for its apps. The company is now getting closer to Android and iOS policies and will let publishers certify a free app as many as 100 times without paying the developer fee a second time. It had previously capped the limit at five and discouraged publishers from offering more than a few feature additions or fixes.

Japanese elevators get voice recognition, Japanese elevator rides get even more awkward
We here at Engadget are all about helping the less fortunate, so Mitsubishi Electric's latest innovation in elevator tech has us all warm and fuzzy. The new interface allows for blind users -- and presumably lazy users -- to select their destination floor by voice, with a subsequent announcement when they arrive. Additionally, the system kicks in whenever it detects a wheelchair, replacing the potentially difficult process of reaching high buttons with the simple act of speaking. No word on whether the system works in English just yet or if it'll make it to the States, but you might want to brush up on your Japanese either way.

Eyez video recording glasses promise to 'revolutionize' social networking
Could this pair of relatively normal looking glasses "revolutionize" video on social networking sites? That's the bold claim made by the folks behind these so-called "Eyez," at least, which unsurprisingly seem to be filled more with vapor than any actual hardware at the moment. iOS 4.3 likely hitting tomorrow, sources indicate
The iOS 4.3 update will mostly likely arrive tomorrow, according to The Loop's Jim Dalrymple. A rumor had the firmware arriving as soon as today, but the predicted release window has since come and gone. Dalrymple claims however that the actual date should be Wednesday; he tells MacNN that the information comes from various sources.

Dear Aunt TUAW,
If I buy an app direct from the App Store, I can load it onto more than one iOS device connected to my iTunes account?
And then, what's the low down on in-app purchasing? If I then make an in-app purchase on one of my devices, say for an upgrade pack, or more scenery for a game, or more Sat-Nav aids, etc. it seems like the update is only available for the device I made the in app purchase on.
Is there any way to put an in-app purchase on both my iPhone and my iPad? Or do I have to make the same in app purchase again for every device?
What if I keep my iPad for my wife and then buy an iPad 2 - so I want to have both on the same iTunes account - how will I move my in app purchases across to the new iPad?

Stephen Colbert can't sleep or eat until he gets his hands on an iPad 2
Last night on the Colbert Report, Stephen was beside himself with anticipation for the iPad 2. A desperate Colbert complains that Apple wouldn't send him one "through the TV," despite having the technology. After all, Colbert notes, its A5 Dual Core Processor allows the iPad 2 to "Not run Flash nine times faster."

Gene Munster: Don't expect long lines for iPad 2
Gene Munster, a senior research analyst for Piper Jaffray, expects the lines for Apple's iPad 2 to be shorter than they were for the original iPad in 2010. Even so, Munster predicts Apple will sell over 1 million of the hotly anticipated iPad 2 in its first 28 days on the market.

Networked 'On Air' light illuminates when webcast begins, dims when it ends (video)
We won't get into the myriad ways to impress one's audience while engaging in a live video podcast, but here's one that slides into the 'surefire' category. The crafty folks over at MAKE decided to construct an automated On Air light for their new live sessions, and rather than automating it with a human hand flipping a switch at a predetermined time, they decided to wire it up to receive signals from a UStream API. In essence, the light is programmed to turn on when the podcast shows 'online,' and turn off when that status changes to 'offline.' It's a beautifully simple concept, and yet, so illuminating. Panasonic prices, dates new Lumix compact cameras
As promised, Panasonic has now revealed prices for its Lumix ZS10, ZS8 and FX78 point-and-shoot cameras introduced late in January, along with the rugged Lumix TS3. The four arrive late this month, and share Leica lenses, HD video recording capabilities and Panasonic's iA full-auto scene mode. Many of the disk utilities available for Mac OS X have been around for quite a few years, so it's surprising when a new entry shows up in this very important class of Mac app. The latest entry, Disk Drill from Cleverfiles, comes in four different flavors ranging from a free Basic edition that may be right for most Mac users up to Pro, Expert, and Enterprise versions.

As it turns out a 20 percent discount isn't all that's in the cards for T-Mobile webConnect subscribers. iPad 2 launch may be spared long lines, says analyst
The Friday iPad 2 launch should run smoother than the event for the iPad 1, according to Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster. The analyst notes that whereas the iPad 1 was available at only 221 Apple Stores and roughly 1,100 Best Buys to start with, the iPad 2 will launch through 236 Apple Stores and more than 10,000 third-party outlets. Participating chains include AT&T, Verizon, Target and Walmart.

Google today brought its Instant Previews to mobile devices for the first time. Both Android and iOS now see a magnifying glass next to search results that will shift them to a thumbnail view of pages in the search results. SK Telecom to get CDMA iPhone 4 on March 16
SK Telecom on Tuesday confirmed earlier tips and said it would carry the iPhone 4 on March 16. The Korean carrier will be the first outside of the US to get the CDMA iPhone 4. Its deal ends KT's technical exclusive for the iPhone in the country, which was dictated mostly by its use of GSM.

Chrome gets a performance boost, simplified settings interface

Apple patent application proposes dynamic video ringtones
A recently-published Apple patent application may suggest interest in dynamic video ringtones for the iPhone. In a basic scheme, a video clip would be associated with calls from a particular contact. Rather than simply play the clip unmodified, however, a phone could analyze an associated audio file, using it to modify the original video with effects like framerate changes or even resequencing. The resulting second clip would better match audio in terms of beats, amplitude and/or frequency.

Adobe releases Wallaby, experimental Flash to HTML 5 conversion tool
Adobe announced the release of Wallaby, an experimental tool designed to convert FLA files to HTML 5. This initial version of Wallaby is meant to convert animated Flash banners to HTML 5-compliant code. This output is optimized for viewing by WebKit-based browsers, including those on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Since it is designed for banners, the first iteration of Wallaby is limited and will not convert ActionScript, movies or sound.

It usually takes a very particular type of personality to buy a crystal-encrusted object of any sort, much less something that you'd drape across an exposed body part like your wrist. News: SK Telecom to launch iPhone 4 on March 16
SK Telecom has announced that it will launch the iPhone 4 in South Korea on March 16. Reuters reports that the carrier, South Korea’s largest, will become the second carrier in the country to offer the iPhone, as it has been available from rival carrier KT Corp since late 2009. Adobe has just released the 10.3 beta version of Flash Player, albeit only for desktops and not mobile devices. This includes Windows, Mac and Linux systems and the new software sports new developer features and added user privacy protection. The beta integrates with Firefox 4 and Internet Explorer 8 browsers' privacy controls (support for Chrome and Safari are coming) for local storage, and gets auto-update notification for Mac OS X computers.

Google Voice users learned late Monday that the service now has a way of making purely Internet-based phone calls. Sprint has been negotiating with Deutsche Telekom to buy T-Mobile USA in what would be a major shakeup of the US Cellular industry, sources alleged on Tuesday. The discussions hae been cast as "on and off" due to a dispute over how much T-Mobile would be worth, but the pursuit has raised the prospect of DT having a formal stake in the resulting union. Best Buy denies it is providing employees with iPads
Best Buy is not planning on distributing iPads to its employees, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. Though iPads are not being given out like candy, the electronics retailer did confirm it is using a variety of devices as part of its "Connected Store" pilot program. If you'll recall, we actually heard last month that Deutsche Telekom was mulling the idea of spinning off T-Mobile USA from its portfolio, and now it looks as if one carrier in particular is interested. A rumor fresh out of BGR claims that iOS 4.3 may debut today at 10 AM Pacific Time. This release date is earlier than the March 11 date suggested last week when the gold master version of the mobile operating system was released to developers.

Apple may quickly follow up the iOS 4.3 gold master with a public release on Tuesday. A hint in the morning had the update arriving at Apple's customary 1PM Eastern, or 10AM Pacific. Natürlich handelt es sich bei diesem Projekt des Amerikaners Chris Eckert um Konzeptkunst, aber für unseren Geschmack ist das Konzept reichlich flach, außerdem ist der Pfusch-Anteil zu hoch: Eigentlich soll Auto Ink nach dem Zufallsprinzip religiöse Motive stechen, aber im Demo-Video rattert die Nadel viel zu schnell über den Arm, hier wird eindeutig geschummelt. Dafür ist die Tattoo-Maschine wirklich gediegen im Old-School-Nähmschinen-Stil gestaltet. Video nach dem Break.

Facebook tested a direct media service of its own today through a team-up with Warner. US visitors to the fan page for The Dark Knight can rent the movie using 30 Facebook Credits, or about $3, to watch it directly from the social network. Optical tweezers manipulate microscopic objects using an iPad, raw brainpower (video)
Okay, so maybe the whole brainpower thing is a distant second to the iPad itself, but still -- being a rocket scientist probably doesn't hurt when manipulating microscopic objects via a multitouch display. That's the kind of setup that students and boffins alike have going at England's University of Bristol, where iTweezers are being used to control a tiny rod about 300 nanometers wide, amongst other things. GDC 2011: Remedy brings Death Rally to iOS
Finnish developer Remedy Entertainment is known for making full-fledged console titles like Max Payne and Alan Wake, but it's stepping into the iOS arena with a touch-based remake of its old racing combat game Death Rally, originally released back in 1996. I got to see the game in action at GDC in San Francisco last week, and I liked it a lot. While it does make use of a virtual joystick (something that Graeme Devine had railed at in his panel earlier in the day), this one's done very well, providing both direction and acceleration to your little car as you race around the game's various tracks.

Philips Fidelio SoundSphere WiFi speaker gets AirPlayed
Add one more to the list of manufacturers supporting Apple's AirPlay. Philips just announced its Fidelio SoundSphere speaker that supports WiFi music streaming over Apple's new media sharing "standard" from your PC or Mac iTunes library or from any iOS device. Samsung hat auf der CeBIT einen Protypen gezeigt, der nachhaltig beeindruckt, wenn hier nicht irgendwie geschummelt wurde: Das 46-Zoll-LCD-Panel mit 1920 mal 1080 Pixeln ist nämlich nicht nur semitransparent und gehorcht 10-Finger-Multitouch, obendrein produziert es auch noch genug Strom für den eigenen Betrieb und dies explizit auch ohne direkte Sonneneinstrahlung nur mit den "umgebenden Lichtquellen". Editorial: Facebook, single identities, and the right to be anonymous
Here in the small but intense world of writing for tech blogs, trolling and spam are a daily nuisance. In fact, on a highly commented-upon blog such as Engadget, dealing with them (i.e., deleting comments, banning spammers, and responding to irrational people) can sometimes feel like a full-time job. I know this firsthand, as I have, possibly more than most of the other editors here over the past few years, made it one of my primary daily tasks (along with our three amazing interns). By engaging with our commenters, I've made a few friends. YouTube buys Next New Networks to help professional content
YouTube confirmed recent rumors on Monday and bought out Next New Networks. The podcast producer was being brought on to become a "laboratory" to both professional studios and newcomers profit from shows on the streaming video site. A dedicated team, YouTube Next, was coming at the same time and would help with grassroots efforts such as buying cameras or supporting community events.

Game developers looking at iPad 2's speedier A5
The iPad 2's Apple A5 processor may not be listed as faster than the existing A4 -- it's running at the same 1 GHz speed -- but the dual core architecture will be able to accomplish a lot more number crunching while still providing great battery life. Now game developers are getting excited about the possibilities for the new processor.

Canon's Rebel T3i / 600D reviewed: not exactly a compelling upgrade
Shocker of shockers -- the T3i really isn't a monumental upgrade from the T2i that came before it. Granted, you could probably glean as much from the raw specifications list, but at least we've got a handful of reviews now to confirm it. The folks at Camera Gear Guide have a fairly exhaustive critique up, and while they lauded the overall image quality and the addition of the new video features (a digital in-shoot zoom and a swiveling LCD), they couldn't wholeheartedly recommend it as an upgrade for existing T1i and T2i owners. Canadian carriers Bell, Telus say they're working on iPad 2 data plans
Electronista reports that Canadian carriers Bell and Telus have notified their customers that iPad 2 data plans will be coming within the next few weeks. Another Canadian carrier, Rogers, will keep existing iPad data plans in place for its customers going forward. There's no word on just exactly what the Bell and Telus plans will look like, but details on how they work are supposed to be released soon.

Meizu M9II may shadow iPhone 5 with 4-inch screen, dual-core
Meizu chief Jack Wong in comments has alluded to first details of a sequel for the M9. The informally named M9II would move up to a four-inch screen that would run at least 640x960 "or better," he said.
