Another optical wireless experiment shows us that LEDs will beam your future downloads

Beaming data with light is hardly a new thing, but lately we've seen a number of attempts at making it rather more usable and, more interesting, rather more speedy. We're starting to get the feeling that those maybe/maybe not dangerous microwave-based systems have had their days numbered. iPads with dead batteries replaced outright for $99

A discovery in Apple's iPad Battery Replacement Service has confirmed that the company will address iPad battery issues aggressively. Rather than attempt to replace the battery if it loses an adequate charge, as it does with iPhones, the company will charge $99 but replace the tablet altogether with a new model. Those who have to ship the iPad instead of visiting a store with stock on hand will also pay a $7 shipping fee and should expect it to be completed within a week.

TomTom iPhone app hits 1.3, gains real-time traffic and Google local search

Here lately, Navigon has been crushing it on the iPhone GPS front. Every couple of weeks, it seems that MobileNavigator is getting yet another fantastic update, all while TomTom's lackluster offering hangs back in the land of complacency. Thankfully for us all, the outfit has just pushed out the v1.3 update, which adds real-time traffic (an unfortunate $19.99 add-on), Google local search, updated roadways, automatic music fading between text-to-speech instructions and the ability to add locations from other apps and websites. Apple to replace iPads in need of new battery for $99

Apple said this week that it will offer a Battery Replacement Service for its new iPad tablet that is similar to the one offered for iPhones and iPods, only this time the company plans to replace the entire device rather than swap out its depleted battery.

Estimate has Apple selling 120,000 iPads in first day

Apple may have moved nearly 120,000 iPads in just its first day of pre-orders, an estimate by private analysts at the AAPL Sanity board suggests. After excluding the 16,500 average orders on a given day, the collective has used the intervals between order numbers over 19.5 hours to estimate that about 119,987 iPads should have sold during that period. The statistic doesn't include those who simply reserved a unit in-store and potentially puts the actual launch day tally considerably higher.

AppleCare for iPad, only two years, not available in some states

People signing up for AppleCare for their iPad have noted that the protection plan is for only two years, unlike its Mac products which are three years.  Apple's iPhone and iPod plans are two years so, as warranty items, Apple sees iPads more like iPhones and less like Macs.  By the way, Apple's iPad AppleCare page could only be found by guessing the URL so it is probably being built out. FCC to call for 10-year broadband plan, 100Mbps access

The FCC's promised national broadband plan should have its formal unveiling on Tuesday, an early scoop of the details claimed on Saturday. Over the next 10 years, the agency would subsidize broadband Internet access for rural areas, creating a combination Internet and cable set-top box, and a previously hinted at plan to relicense as much as 500MHz of spectrum for wireless Internet access. Packard Bell Studio ST media playback drive invades Europe

It's not much more than a hard drive with HD media playback abilities, but the Packard Bell Studio ST certainly looks nice, doesn't it? It's Europe-only for now, but we're hoping parent company Acer brings over a US-branded version of this box, which holds up to a 2TB hard drive and can do 1080p out over HDMI with Dolby Digital. OpenGL 4.0 konkurriert mit DirectX11

Die Khronos Group hat auf der Game Developers Conference in San Francisco OpenGL 4.0 vorgestellt. Der Standard soll die Programmierung komplexer Grafikeffekte erleichtern, aber auch die Nutzung der GPU für andere Aufgaben. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt der Version 4.0 ist Tesselation (auf Deutsch auch "Parkettierung" genannt), die Aufteilung eines Grafikobjekts in mehrere kleine, um ein detailreicheres Bild zu erzeugen. Tesselation wurde ursprünglich von Silicon Graphics entwickelt, ist aber mittlerweile ein Standard unter Aufsicht der Khronos Group.

Forscher der Hochschule Konstanz und des Moskauer Energetischen Instituts haben die Energieeffizienz von PC-Netzteilen erhöht. AT&T to use HSPA+ in some areas soon

AT&T will still implement 21Mbps 3G on its network on its way to 4G, the company's Mobility chief Ralph de la Vega said in an interview late Thursday. The provider had late last year said it would skip HSPA+ to make a more direct leap, but de la Vega now sees the advanced 3G reaching "certain locations" before 4G becomes widespread. He didn't yet have information for FierceWireless as to which areas would get the faster treatment.

Tim Cook nets $22m in bonuses for covering Jobs

Apple in a just-published SEC filing has revealed that its chief operating officer, Tim Cook, was paid about $22 million in bonuses for acting as CEO during Steve Jobs' medical leave last year. The payouts included both a $5 million immediate bonus as well as 75,000 units of restricted stock, which at the time issued were worth about $17 million. Both reflect the "outstanding performance" in taking Apple's helm, the filing reads.

iPad arrives at FCC in 3G, Wi-Fi versions

In sync with pre-orders, the iPad today was passed through the FCC in both Wi-Fi only and 3G enabled models. The tests don't confirm new features but show that the two are clear to use Wi-Fi in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands as well as AT&T's 850MHz and 1,900MHz HSPA bands for the 3G edition. In a possibly intentional nod to tech enthusiasts, the 3G model carries the model number A1337.
