Aus der noch jungen vierten Beta des iPhone SDKs 3.2 strich Apple angeblich die deutlichen Verweise auf eine Videokonferenztauglichkeit im Telefon-Framework. Apple dominates Consumer Reports support rankings
Consumer Reports today gave Apple a major lead in its rankings for both desktop and notebook technical support [subscription required]. Among more than 7,000 readers, Apple's help scored 87 and 86 points in each category and was much higher-rated than any other computer manufacturer. Lenovo came closest in notebooks with just 63 points, while Dell fell far behind in desktops with a 55-point score.

iPad SDK 3.2 beta 4 squashes rumors of a camera, but adds new gesture controls
There's only about a month to go before Apple drops the iPad on the world, and it looks like all those theories about a last-minute camera addition were just fond fanboy wishes -- iPhone SDK 3.2 beta 4 just came out, and in addition to stripping out several video-call related icons, we've been told the docs contain this little tidbit about that Camera tab:

WD's 320GB My Passport AV external HDD wants to have and hold your media
Western Digital has played this card before with the strategically named My DVR Expander, but for those who don't realize that an external hard drive is an external hard drive, there's the My Passport AV. Foursquare updates iPhone app with new UI, sorting options
Foursquare has released a major update to its self-titled iPhone app. The latest version is claimed to offer faster, more efficient check-in and shout flow. The user interface has been overhauled with a new design, with the places now sorted by categories. Razer promises Mac support for all upcoming products
Razer already provides full Mac support for a few of its gaming peripherals -- including the Naga and DeathAdder -- and basic support for others, but it's now taken avantage of GDC to "reaffirm" its commitment to Mac users. Folx 1.0 merges regular downloads, torrents
Eltima has posted a new download manager for the Mac, Folx 1.0. The program differs from some by handling both direct downloads and BitTorrent files. Downloads can by default be split into two threads, and can assigned tags for easier tracking. Priority is assigned by dragging important files towards the top of the queue. The app can also resume downloads, and limit bandwidth consumption by throttling speed. Growl notifications and Spotlight searches are supported.

Amazon one-click patent confirmed
Amazon's controversial 1-click patent has been approved, after nearly four years of re-examination. The USPTO approved the online retailer's patent but added a limitation that requires the one-click system to operate in conjunction with a shopping cart model. Other e-commerce retailers would need to use both a shopping cart model, likely to be of the non-1-click variety, as well as a 1-click version. Because most online retailers use shopping carts, the limitation should have little impact on the patent's power.

Street Fighter IV reaches iPhone, iPod touch
Capcom has released an iPhone version of Street Fighter IV, originally developed for consoles and the PC. The handheld edition scales down some of the content, for instance using 2D instead of 3D graphics. It does however include seven backgrounds and eight of the original fighters, with their complete move sets, such as Focus Attacks and Ultra Combos.

Imperfect rumor has Core i7 Mac Pro due next week
A very tentative rumor today claims that Apple will launch a new Mac Pro next week using Intel's new Core i7-980X. The chip would be the first six-core model in a Mac and would give the same 3.33GHz clock speed as the custom-order Xeon but at a lower price. The system would be available Tuesday the 16th, but pricing and other details weren't mentioned in the ZDNet slip.

HTC HD2 said to be launching March 24th for $199, no Windows Phone 7 support
Well, we'd already had a pretty clear indication that the HTC HD2 would be launching on T-Mobile on March 24th (or possibly the 23rd), and Laptop Magazine is now reporting that a "very close T-Mobile source" has confirmed that the 24th is indeed the date, and that the phone will run $199 on a two-year contract (or $449 off-contract). The March 23rd date that recently cropped up is apparently just the day the MobiTV software will go live. Just as notably, Laptop also says that it has confirmed that the phone won't be upgradeable to Windows Phone 7 Series -- although, at this point, we'll have to hear that first-h

Alle Welt redet von 3D, das US-amerikanische Militär will da natürlich mit und der Flugzeug/Rüstungs-Konzern Boeing hilft dabei. Die neue 3D-Kamera ist klein und effizient, braucht nur ein Drittel des Platzes und ein Zehntel der Energie vergleichbarer Konkurrenzsysteme. Die gute Nachricht für uns Ausgemusterte und Friedensbewegte: Boeing will die Kamera auch an zivile Kunden verkaufen, das Militär ist einfach nur zuerst dran. Vielleicht ist dann auch schon das aktuell größte Manko der Kamera gelöst: Im Moment schießt sie nur Einzelbilder, Video-Funktion soll, laut Boeing aber bald folgen. Videotelefonie mit dem iPhone: Nur ein Druckfehler?
Es wäre auch zu einfach gewesen, eine Option zur Video-Telefonie einer Tarif-Beschreibung bei O2 zu entnehmen. Kürzlich hatte diese Gerüchte befeuert, die auf eine solche Funktion in kommenden iPhone-Modellen anspielten. Jetzt hat sich herausgestellt, dass es sich nur um einen Druckfehler handelte.

OnLive Game Service to launch on June 17 in the US for $15 a month
It's been a long time coming, but it looks like the wait for OnLive is finally coming to an end: the service is now officially slated to launch on June 17 in the 48 contiguous states. The game streaming service will run users $14.95 a month, though buying or renting games is an additional cost (it's unclear exactly what that cost might be). Computing pioneer Chuck Thacker wins Turing Award
Chuck Thacker may not be quite the same household name as some other computing pioneers, but it's pretty hard to overstate the influence he's had on the industry, a feat for which he's now be honored with the A.M. Turing Award -- widely considered to be the "Nobel prize of computing." New gestures revealed in latest iPhone 3.2 beta
Some early details of iPhone 3.2 SDK beta 4 have emerged from developer sources. Buried within a "gestures" folder in the code are two new PLIST files, "3Tap" and "LongPress." These accompany easily recognizable commands for pinching, rotating and other multi-touch tasks.

OnLive gaming due in June for $15 per month
OnLive at GDC today narrowed down the launch date and pricing for its streaming gaming service. The technology is now due to go live June 17th and will cost $15 per month for playing OnLive's entire catalog through a broadband Internet connection. An exact game library isn't fixed but should vary between 12 to 25 games, including modern games like Borderlands and Mass Effect 2 in addition to some older titles.

Adobe, Microsoft "working closely" on Flash for Win Phone 7
Adobe's Mike Chambers late yesterday confirmed that his company is not only developing Flash for Windows Phone 7 but has been deeply involved with Microsoft. The developer notes that Adobe has been "working closely" with Microsoft and plans to integrate Flash 10.1 directly into Internet Explorer Mobile. HTC Legend already trickling into customers' waiting hands?

Google Apps Marketplace opens for business, for business
Google's certainly made some enterprise inroads with Google Apps, and now it's open the road for other cloud-based service providers to build on that success: it's launching Google Apps Marketplace to sell third-party web apps that integrate with the Apps suite. The apps are sold as a subscription, with both monthly and annual pricing, and the billing is all handled by Google. Since it's all targeted at the enterprise, the apps themselves are pretty dry -- we're talking notables like Intuit Online Payroll, eFax, and TripIt -- but it's pretty easy to see how Google could build a similar consumer-level marketplace into Gmail and Google Calendar sometime in the future. Razer plans Mac support for all future peripherals
Today at the currently ongoing Game Developer's Conference, gaming peripherals maker Razer said that it will release drivers that will give Mac users the ability to play with all upcoming Razer products. The company will also backtrack and release Mac drivers for existing products. Studie: USA-Marktanteile bei den Mobiles
Die Mobil-Spezialisten von comScore haben für die aktuellste Ausgabe ihrer MobiLens Reports die Marktanteile im US-Handy- und Smartphone-Markt zwischen Oktober 2009 und Januar 2010 betrachtet. Grundgesamtheit der Untersuchung sind wieder über 13 Jahre alte Mobilfunk-Kunden in den USA. Nach ihren Ergebnissen liegt Motorola mit 22,9% bei den Handy-Herstellern und immer noch RIM/BlackBerry mit 43,0% bei den Smartphone-Fertigern vorne. Das Handy-Ranking im Detail: Platz 2 hält LG (21,7%), dicht gefolgt von Samsung (21,1), abgeschlagen folgen Weltmarktführer Nokia (9,1%) und RIM (7,8%).
Laut comScores Daten nutzten 42,7 Mio. Menschen im Untersuchungszeitraum Smartphones. Platzhirsch RIM/BlackBerry OS (+1,7 Prozentpunkte) wird verfolgt von Apple/iPhone OS (25,1%, +0,3 Prozentpunkte), Microsoft/Windows Mobile (15,7%), Android (7,1%, +4,3 Prozentpunkte!) und Palm (5,7%).

New Gestures coming to an iPhone/iPad near you: triple tap and long press
On the surface, the latest iPhone 3.2 Beta 4 SDK didn't have much new and exciting information. Diving a little deeper however, we find some interesting information.
In the data/gestures folder, you'll see two new types of commands (3Tap.plist and LongPress.plist) that are certainly not implemented on any current iPhone, and are referenced throughout the SDK as a new type of gesture being used for a few different purposes (one that comes to mind is that a 3Tap is used to reset the settings inputted by a user in an app, kind of like a reset button).
Apple is likely adding these capabilities to the next versions of the OS. We might even see this in the shipping version of the iPad. Thanks AL!

Apple, RIM, several others targeted in smartphone lawsuit
Apple, AT&T, Research in Motion and several other companies are being sued by a company based in Frisco, Texas, according to AppleInsider. SmartPhone Technologies charges that seven of its patents have been violated, including ones related to Bluetooth, e-mail sync and some broader concepts associated with smartphones. Other corporations listed in the suit include LG, Motorola, Samsung and Sanyo. With one of the patents only RIM, Motorola and Samsung are listed as infringing.

Boeing announces compact, energy-efficient 3D camera
Yes, even the military has gone 3D. Helping it in that endeavor is Boeing, which has just announced a tiny new 3D camera that's one-third the size and consumes one-tenth the power of comparable 3D imaging systems. While it will also be made available for commercial use, it seems like military will be first in line to use the cameras, with Boeing noting that it's potential applications including "mapping terrain, tracking targets and seeing through foliage," and adding that it's already testing the camera on unmanned aerial vehicles. The biggest drawback to the camera at the moment is that it's only able to take 3D still images, but Boeing says it will "soon" add 3D video capability as well. BlackBerry holds off iPhone for US lead in January
RIM's BlackBerry line managed to hold off Apple to claim the top spot for US smartphone market share at the start of the year, new comScore data shows. The BlackBerry line only grew its share slightly but held on to exactly 43 percent of the field. Apple passed a symbolic milestone and now has more than a quarter of the entire market, but its iPhone sales grew at a slower rate and put it at 25.1 percent.

Elan denies settlement in lawsuit against Apple
Elan Microelectronics is denying rumors that it has settled a patent lawsuit directed against Apple, according to a Taiwanese news site. The case was originally launched in April of last year, and accuses Apple of violating two multi-touch patents by way of the iPhone, iPod touch and MacBook. The settlement would allegedly be worth $70 million, but Elan insists that the issue is still in front of the US' International Trade Commission.

Toshiba plans home tablets for late 2010
Toshiba is developing tablets of its own to get into the category being established by the iPad, the company's US notebook lead Jeff Barney said in comments today. He anticipates a line of devices to arrive either by late this year or early 2011. This Computerworld article sounds about right. Segmentation is Apple's friend in this case as all of the competitors are scrambling and confusing consumers to become #2. Even though Apple is the 51st ARM tablet because the A4 is an ARM design, it clearly stands out from the pack as THE tablet. The hype around the iPad is easily bigger than all of the other Joojoos/Slates combined.
I think the tablet game is going to play out like this: You'll have the other ARM tablets on the low end (Dell, etc) that cost less than the iPad and pick up the audience that can't justify the $500 entry cost. Then you'll have the Intel Atom tablets (JooJoo/HP) priced about the same as the iPad but with more "features" (cameras, Adobe Flash, etc.) that may appeal to a select few in the corporate market. Apple has scored a victory in public perception through two important wins in Brand Keys' 2010 Loyalty Index. The iPhone helped it top the researchers' smartphone ranks, while unibody MacBooks helped push it above Dell and all others Windows PC brands in the full-size notebook computer category. Pioneer DJ mixer brings multi-touch screen
Pioneer hoped to move the technology of DJ mixers forward today by launching a new addition to the DJM line. The DJM-2000 is the first mixer with a multi-touch display and uses the 5.8-inch LCD to provide control over the sound that would be difficult with buttons. At a basic level, it lets musicians put up a set of custom interfaces for controlling a Mac or PC's music software through MIDI. Comscore: Bing baut Marktanteil in den USA weiter aus
Microsofts Suchmaschine Bing hat ihren Marktanteil in den Vereinigten Staaten im Februar weiter ausgebaut. ARM expects over 50 ARM tablets in 2010 alone
The number of touchscreen tablets running on ARM chips is set to explode even in 2010, the company's global mobile device ODM manager Roy Chen said today. While the iPad is the most conspicuous of these, Chen anticipates over 50 shipping in 2010. The first are due in the spring and will largely be attached to cellular carriers. EA Sports hat auf der GDC (Game Developers Conference) in San Francisco die Fortsetzung ihres erfolgreichen Fitnessprogramms EA Sports Active (siehe Video nach dem Break) angekündigt. EA Sports Active 2.0 - was noch nicht der endgültige Name ist - wird mit nicht nur mit der Wii, sondern auch mit der PS3, dem iPod Touch und dem iPhone funktionieren. Neu sind auch zwei Sensoren, die zur Messung der Herzfrequenz an Arm und Bein befestigt werden, und die Möglichkeit, Workout-Daten mit anderen Nutzern auszutauschen. Palm bringt Entwicklerkit für WebOS-Erweiterungen
Palm hat auf der Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco eine Public-Beta-Version des neuen WebOS Plug-in Development Kit (PDK) vorgestellt. Das Entwicklerpaket steht auf der Website zum Download bereit. Mit dem PDK erstellt man Plug-ins zur Erweiterung von bestehenden WebOS-Anwendungen in C oder C++. Zuerst mal soll es nicht nur den Palm Pre und den Palm Pre Plus unterstützen, sondern auch den Pixi. In 2007, steampunk musician Yoshi Akai wrote his master's thesis on how to turn color into sound, and he's been dreaming up unorthodox ways of producing music ever since. Android Handset von AT&T sucht mit Yahoo, nicht Google
Nach Presseberichten wird der US-Carrier AT&T das Android Smartphone Backflip von Motorola mit voreingestellter Yahoo- statt Google-Suche ausliefern. iPhone-Vertrieb in China – und Deutschland
Carrier China Unicom arbeitet nach Berichten des Wall Street Journal gemeinsam mit Apple an einer iPhone-Version, die erstmals auch Wi-Fi unterstützt. Bei den bisher offiziell in China vertriebenen Geräten wurde die Wi-Fi-Funktion u.a. aufgrund von Regierungsauflagen deaktiviert. Doch laut WSJ soll nun künftig der chinesische WAPI-Standard unterstützt werden dürfen. Seit Oktober 2009 wird das iPhone in China nicht nur gefertigt, sondern auch offiziell vertrieben - mit bislang gedämpftem Erfolg. China Unicom ist bislang noch der exklusive Distributor im Land der Mitte, Apples Verhandlungen mit China Mobile sollen aber andauern.

Verizon thinks Wifi-only ads are a selling opportunity
As a Mifi user already, I've decided to forgo the 3G version of the iPad and stick with Wifi. The reason is simple. I already use the Mifi to connect my MacBook Pro to the Internet when I am away from home/Wifi. Why would I get another plan when I already have 5GB of data/ month on a much better wireless carrier (and an iPhone plat with AT&T. If I didn't have the Mifi, I'd be tempted to jailbreak my iPhone and use it as a Mifi.

Microsoft's decision to drop the Zune HD from its XNA development kit may actually be hints at plans for its sequel, leaks indicated on Tuesday. Multiple sources toldZDNet that the follow-up touchscreen player will be "similar to an iPod touch," indicating a more general-purpose role than the media-heavy Zune HD. Alright, we're going to be straight with you: you're not going to like this. See, Microsoft just showed us a pair of 3D games running on its ASUS Windows Phone prototype and built with its brand new XNA Game Studio 4.0, but wouldn't let us nab a single photo or video of the process. What we can tell you is that they exist, they work, and at least Microsoft tossed us some screenshots to wave in your face. Verizon briefs staff on iPad, stirs anti-AT&T talk
Verizon tonight was caught distributing a memo to retail staff encouraging them to sell to iPad customers. The note obtained by Engadget encourages floor workers to promote the idea of using a Wi-Fi only iPad with a Novatel MiFi router. Mixing the two would not only save the $130 premium on an iPad with built-in 3G but would help users get off of AT&T's "overloaded network with limited coverage," according to the memo.

Palm's webOS PDK beta adds Pixi native development, PDK'd apps will hit the Catalog mid year
We just sat down with Palm here at GDC and fished out a few more details on the PDK beta front. Firstly, and most interestingly, Palm has confirmed that the PDK now works on all of its handsets (instead of just the Pre and Pre Plus), which means Pixi buyers can stop hating themselves pretty soon. Apparently the level of performance degradation should be comparable iPhone 3G vs. 3GS, which doesn't sound too horrible. This is functionality that wasn't available even to Palm's early PDK partners like EA and Gameloft, so we should be seeing versions of existing games make the jump to the Pixi when the time for PDK beta-developed apps to hit the Palm App Catalog. PS3 first with HD movies from all major studios
