Video: ASUS AIRO laptop with amazing sliding keyboard

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/hardware/Video_ASUS_AIRO_laptop_with_amazing_sliding_keyboard'; ASUS was kind enough to take its beautiful AIRO laptop out from behind the glass at CES for an Engadget exclusive look at the functional sliding mechanism. The design raises the keyboard to cool the hot running components beneath allowing for a fan-less, convection-cooled design. Unfortunately, this prototype is just a chipset-less mechanical shell. Raise the lid and the keyboard slides back smoother than a greased-up Pete Rose. This allows for a larger, more comfortable wrist rest from which to slap those angled keys. Sexy? Oh yeah, with mojo to spare. Check the video after the break.

Sony OLED Walkman NWZ-X1000 eyes-on

We've been trying to get a legitimate hands-on with Sony's OLED-infused Walkman since we first caught the device on Wednesday, but security's been super tight in the Sony booth and we couldn't distract anyone long enough to unscrew the casing. So we can't get an actual hands-on with the Walkman, but we don't need to touch it to know that the OLED is seriously gorgeous and the UI looks super crisp. Sony's reluctance to pull this out of its casing seems to show the player's not ready for primetime, but we'll keep trying to get something a bit more gratifying.Gallery: Sony OLED Walk

Palm renews itself

Ever since the arrival of the steam roller Windows Mobile, Palm slowly has sunk, while seeking a route to decide what it is (pda, telephone) and an operating system (Palm OS, Windows Mobile) to adopt without really succeeding in reconquering its public. However, they believe that they are not beaten, and hope and count on the Pre (pronounced " Pri") to compete more seriously with Windows Mobile, Blackberry and the iPhone. This new device is based on WebOS, and thought up under the direction of Jon Rubinstein, a former engineer at Apple at the origin of the design of the iMac and the iPod, and wants it to be directed towards the developers, a web navigator with full HTML, a fluid and pleasant interface, and applications to manage your social network connections etc…

pureSilicon shows off 1TB 2.5-inch SSD

Palm's app store christened App Catalog, games not a priority

Following an apparent rejection of our suggestion of "Immaculate Collection," Palm's Developer Network site suggests that the official name of its app store for webOS is simply going to be "App Catalog". The name isn't terribly important, but the concept is critical -- every mobile platform of consequence is moving in the direction of intelligent, on-the-go app management, and with the Pre, Palm can't afford to be any different in that regard.Outside Palm's inner circle of trusted partners, the webOS SDK (playfully named "Mojo") won't be released to would-be app developers until we get closer to the Pre's launch, but we know a few key details. First off, as "webOS" implies, apps writ

There's certainly no shortage of internet-connected digital photo frames out there, but those looking for a truly out-of-the-box experience may want to keep an eye out for Isabella Products' new Vizit frame, which ditches the usual WiFi and Ethernet in favor of a more convenient (and more expensive) cellular connection. Unfortunately, Isabella Products doesn't seem ready to get too specific with things just yet, with it only saying that the frame boasts a "high resolution" 10.2-inch touchscreen, and that it'll be tied to the as yet non-existent Vizitme.com website, which promises to let users share photos and engage in a whole host of other social networking activities. As you might have guessed, you'll also have to fork over an unspecified mon

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G3 WiFi camera reviewed: wait for generation two

WiFi cameras are far from new -- over the past couple of years, we've seen P&S after P&S arrive with minimal functionality that would allow it to sync pictures with one specific online photo portal (or similar). Sony has stepped up the game for cameras to come with the Cyber-shot DSC-G3, which is the first of its kind to include a web browser for logging into pay-hotspots and uploading to practically any photo sharing site on the web. Dell's Mini 9 gets the subsidy treatment

We all love netbooks, and we also love things costing less than $100. However, since we're not exactly fond of lengthy contracts, it was with mixed feelings that we reported on Acer's Aspire One being available in the US for a penny under a Benjamin -- plus 24 month's worth of your soul. Dell is joining in on the fun now, making its own deal with AT&T to enable the purchase of a hot little Mini 9 valued at $449 for $99 after a $350 rebate and a (qualifying) two year contract. Dell Mini 10 hands-on

We just caught up with the Dell Mini 10, and while it's not as crazy hot as the white Adamo, it's still pretty sweet -- much nicer looking than the Mini 9, and more compact than the Mini 12. No wonder Dell's calling it a "perfect 10." The multitouch trackpad is really similar to the one on the newest Macbooks, but it's a little less intuitive -- the buttons are pushed into the corners, so a middle press doesn't do a lot. On the other hand, it's a little more useful -- not only can you do the usual zooming and scrolling, laying three fingers on the pad brings up a slick little launcher screen. Too bad we don't have pricing

Actually, sure, it could be any of those things if you really wanted it to be -- but Palm's Touchstone is mainly about charging your Pre and making sure it looks pretty while it's getting juiced. It's a pretty wild product (and the first accessory purchase for many a would-be Pre owner, we'd bet), so we wanted to spend a little quality time with it. We weren't allowed to do much charging on our own, but the magnets buried in the Pre certainly seemed to do their job of keeping it glued to the base in portrait and landscape orientations. Audiovox in-car MediaFLO hands-on

Qualcomm's MediaFLO tech was originally intended for screens so small that resolution, artifacting, and wholesale crappiness don't really matter, but when you're building out a whole new wireless network for this thing, monetization is a high priority wherever you can find it. To that end, Audiovox is lending a helping hand with a new receiver launching later this year that'll plug into most in-car video systems and deliver MediaFLO programming straight to your back seat, your front seat, or whatever bizarre place (engine compartment, maybe?) you've mounted a display. We weren't terribly impressed with the video quality; generally speaking, DVD is probably the better entertainment option here, but if live shows are a must-have for you, this is just about the only cheap, ea

The worst of these cases have resulted in handsets with a battery cover that won't close at the back -- rendering the phone totally not cool. It's a fairly common lithium-ion battery occurence after a few years, but don't worry -- it's not dangerous, just annoying. Look at this this way: at least the batteries aren't exploding.Filed under: Cellphones

Nvidia GeForce 3DVision gets reviewed

The short, happy history of 3D gaming has been unimpressive -- dual-display glasses and high-priced 3D monitors have generally failed to bring source material originally built for two dimensions into the three dimensional world. Keeping this in mind, the kids at bit-tech seem to be as wary as we are, but when all is said and done they came away from the sordid affair rather impressed. "An excellent piece of tech," they said -- one that actually seems to work on existing games -- although the fact that a new monitor is required to use it "knocks the legs out from underneath." Sure, it worked well enough that the well-heeled, hardcore gamer might be interested in it, but for the time being this doesn't seem to be an option for the casual consumer. B

callpod's adding a new version of their popular Chargepod that responds directly to some of the gripes we had with the V1 model. The Chargepod V2 has a three-sided design that charges a PC or Mac portable, three smaller devices like an iPod or camera, and a three port USB 2.0 hub for charging and syncing. Don't worry if you've already dropped mad coinage on those device-specific adapters for the V1 -- they're compatible with the V2. The device's specs make it look a bit hefty, but thankfully the design helps alleviate some of that. However, consolidation don't come cheap -- the Chargepod V2 will run you a steep $199.95. [Via

Logitech's G9x gaming mouse reviewed, deemed worth a look

We already had a little hands-on time with Logitech's G9x, but TechRadar was able to spend a copious amount of time with it. So much time, in fact, that it wrote up a review explaining the pros and cons of owning one. The gist of it was that the G9x didn't really mess with the original formula of the G9, and the 5,000DPI sensor was stellar under pressure. The scroll wheel and buttons were also found to be solid, and the accompanying software was also satisfactory. All in all, the G9x didn't seem to really shock and awe, but if you're currently in the market for a gaming mouse, this one should supposedly make it onto your "shortlist of c

Now at CES we're still in the dark about price (and availability), but are finally hearing just what's going on under the keyboard; Atom processors in 1.3GHz and 1.6GHz flavors, a 7-inch, 1024 x 600 screen, 1GB of RAM, and either 16GB worth of SSD or 60GB served up on platters. Pegatron and Freescale team for low-power, ultra-cheap netbooks and nettops

Pegatron has been pretty quiet ever since it split off from ASUS to do ODM stuff all by its lonesome -- which is sort of the idea, since Pegatron's mainly doing the behind-the-scenes manufacturing. We're glad, however, that the company peeked out of its shell to show off these new Freescale-based netbooks. The Linux-running laptops boast 8.9-inch screens, 8 hour battery life, 8GB of storage and projected retail prices around $199, while the nettop holds similar power in a pico-style form factor. Under the hood is Freescale's brand new ARM i.MX515 processor, which is a 1GHz chip that's described as basically being three times faster than the iPhone. T

Samsung / Chumby prototype digiframe hands-on

The Samsung / Chumby digiframe was on hand at CES in a very, very early prototype form. In fact, the demo units didn't even have a back plate covering up the innards. We were told that Samsung's contribution is the processor within, and plans are to release it to market before the end of '09. Our early impressions? The widgets were liquid smooth and lookin' good; the video playback, however, was less than acceptable. Have a glance below for an early look.Gallery: Samsung / Chumby prototype digiframe hands-on

Video: Samsung P3 PMP hands-on

We tried to get hands-on with the P3 PMP right after the Samsung event, but poor lighting and mass crowding prevented us from getting anything really usable. But fret not because we headed back to the company's booth to seek out the 3-inch WQVGA player with haptic feedback among the nauseating amount of HDTVs. The walk-through we were given paid specific attention to the P3's stereo Bluetooth capabilites as well as the touch-based interface. We came away pretty impressed with the polished UI and the smoothness of the user experience. Check out the the device in action after the break and our gallery of hands-on shots as well. Gallery:

Polaroid PoGo Instant Digital Camera hands-on

Polaroid's PoGo Instant Digital Camera isn't for the hardcore geeks -- it's stuck with a 5 megapixel sensor, no zoom whatsoever and a LCD monitor that was fanciful in 1998. What it can do, however, is churn out photo stickers in around 60 seconds after a photo is taken without the need for an external printer. Have a look at the March-bound unit below, and look, your kids will love it. Promise.Gallery: Polaroid PoGo Instant Digital Camera hands-on

Dell's XPS 625 reviewed already, found worthy

We're well into the throes of CES and things are happening hot and heavy; Dell's Phenom II-packing XPS 625, announced just hours ago, has already been given a full once-over by DesktopReview.com, finding it to be a solid machine -- and even a good value. (When's the last time you read that conclusion about a gaming rig?) The review admires the machine's sophisticated looks, well-designed case, and easy expandability, but found that AMD's latest couldn't quite keep up with the i7 (as we'd heard

LG's new X120 netbook with Splashtop-powered instant on

We just bumped into LG's X120, a barely-differentiated followup to the X110 that's floating around the show floor. There's still a 1.6GHz Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, Windows XP and a 10-inch WSVGA screen, but what's new is the Splashtop-powered "LG Smart On" OS, which does the quick boot thing we've come to know and love on many ASUS products, the Voodoo Envy 133 and elsewhere. The effect, as always, is pretty stunning, and the OS should be helpful for a quick look at the web or to hop on IM over the laptop's WiFi connectivity. The netbook itself seems to have been tweaked a tad on aesthetics, but it's still a bit thicker than we'd like at this point for the netbook market. We're short on further details, but since the X110 did 3G, there'

VIA shows off Nano-powered Dr. Mobile Freestyle Mini

If you've been listening to the Engadget Podcast, you know that Taiwan's Dr. Mobile is our new favorite fly-by-night Asian netbook vendor, and VIA's showing off its Nano-powered Freestyle Mini here at CES in a darkened restaurant. (Seriously!) Internally, it's basically a smaller version of the 11.6-inch Freestyle we played with a few days ago, but it's in a more traditional netbook package with an 8.9-inch screen. We were pretty blunt in asking the VIA rep why the Nano's basically been a no-show during 2008's Atom explosion, and while we didn't get a straight answer, it sounds like 2009 might be the year the battle for netbook platform dominance is

Ford teases the future of Sync, plans to bring disembodied heads to dashboards everywhere

There's plenty of automotive tech on display at CES this year (amps and kickers for miles, dawg) and, while Microsoft is talking up its enhanced Sync for 2010 autos, Ford President and CEO Alan Mulally took an opportunity to direct our gaze a bit further down the road with an interesting demo of what he imagines the rear-view mirror of the future will look like. Ford calls it Emotic Voice Activation, or EVA, basically an integrated AI that can read you your e-mail, check the news, and even, apparently, detect what kind of tunes you're in the mood for. At this point we don't know anything about when or even if this sort of thin
