Rumors of drastic cost cutting at Sony abound, Sony says not so fast
Sony already announced some pretty significant layoffs and other cost-cutting measures last month, but it looks like the company could be set to take things even further, with the Times of London now reporting that some major factory and division closings could also be in the offing as early as next month. Any details beyond that are a bit light, it seems, but Sony is denying that any such plan exists, with a spokesperson saying simply that the company does "not plan to announce additional restructuring measures at this time." AT&T's 3G push degrades 2G reception: report

We had a chance to sit down with VIA's VP of sales and marketing, Richard Brown, earlier today to discuss the finer points of the company's position in the marketplace. New Mac mini mentioned in third party press release
It seems like the signs are pointing to a refresh of the Mac mini when this year's Macworld rolls around. According to a press release by SeeFile, their new (version 4.6) web server software can be purchased bundled with a Mac mini server with 1 terabyte of storage -- which is odd enough, since the largest internal drive that ships with the thing is 120GB. Time Capsule update coming...Software Updates
We've had two sources corroborate that Apple isn't putting together a home server just yet but instead is going to update Time Machine at some point in the very near future (Macworld?). The update is relatively minor and the biggest feature is that it will allow the Time Machine to cache software updates for all Macs on the network. This functionality exists in Leopard Server and is nice to have in a home device - especially as updates get bigger and bigger.
Current users should be able to take advantage of this, you guessed it - with a software update.
We'd still like to see Apple move into the home server market soon and will be keeping our ears to the tracks to see if anything is materializing.

Canon keeps 'em coming with six new SD camcorders
If your budget just won't stretch far enough to snap up a high-def camcorder, Canon's also got a half dozen SD versions on the horizon. Here at CES, the company is unveiling the FS22, FS21 and FS200 Flash Memory camcorders, which are up to 17% tinier than previous FS models and include up to 32GB of internal memory to complement the SDHC card slot. Digital TV subsidy program nearly dry: get your vouchers now
When the FCC's Kevin Martin asserted that the 2009 digital TV transition subsidy program was nearing the end of its financial rope back in October, no one really paid him any mind. Roku owners looking to go discless are one step closer, now that Amazon Video On Demand will be available on the box after a free software update in early 2009. Macworld Expo: Morgen geht's los
Am morgigen Dienstag startet in San Francisco die Macworld Expo zum letzten Mal mit offizieller Beteiligung Apples. Um 9 Uhr Ortszeit (18.00 Uhr in Deutschland) wird Apple-Vize Phil Schiller die Eröffnungsrede zur diesjährigen Messe halten und dabei sicherlich die eine oder andere Überraschung in Form von Produktaktualisierungen oder gar Neuvorstellungen in der Tasche haben.
Aber die Macworld Expo wird nicht von Apple alleine bestritten. Mehr als 500 Aussteller freuen sich darauf, ihre Produkte den erwarteten rund 40.000 Besuchern zu präsentieren. Mit dabei sind auch beinahe alle relevanten Hersteller von Zubehör für iPod und iPhone.

Telekommunikationspreise sinken 2008 um 3,3 Prozent
Wie das Statistische Bundesamt mitteilt, lagen im Jahresdurchschnitt 2008 die Preise für Telekommunikationsdienstleistungen 3,3 Prozent unter dem Niveau des Vorjahres. 2007 waren die Kosten für Festnetztelefonie, Internetnutzung und Mobilfunk aufgrund der Umsatzsteuererhöhung zum 1. Steve Jobs beruhigt Apple-Fans u. Anleger
Die Bekanntgabe, dass die Eröffnungsrede zur diesjährigen Macworld Expo Apple-Vize Phil Schiller anstatt von Steve Jobs hält, hat seit Dezember für allerlei - teils auch sehr niveaulose Spekulationen zum Gesundheitszustand des Apple-Chefs gesorgt. Jetzt hat sich Jobs in einem offenen Brief an die Apple Community erstmals detailliert zu seinem Gesundheitszustand geäußert. Er leide an einer Hormonstörung und wolle nach seiner vollständigen Genesung im Frühjahr wieder in alter Frische zur Verfügung stehen.

1,5 TB disks of Seagate are now reliable
On several occasions, we had spoken about the annoying problems found on Macs with the 1,5 TB Seagate disks. An update of their firmware has since regulated these problems. It is considered to be sufficient so that Data Robotics that markets storage solutions intended for the professionals, has withdrawn its warning about these disks and regards the new ones as reliable.
As a reminder, this update is available since November 22, and it is necessary to make a request to the after sales service at Seagate to have the right to download it. This new firmware is SD1A.

Canon updates, shrinks SD camcorders

Mac OS share accelerating, says analyst

We've gotten a flurry of late reports that there is in fact a removable battery in the 17-inch laptop. We don't know what to make of it. Either Apple has been pulling an Android or there are two batteries in the laptop. More to follow as this develops.

Eye-Fi functionality comes to iPhone via new application
We'd be fibbing just a wee bit if we said that Eye-Fi functionality for the iPhone has always been imminent, but now that it's real, we suppose we aren't too surprised. Announced today at Macworld, the Eye-Fi application will enable iPhone owners (that just so happen to also own an Eye-Fi card) to upload images taken on their handset to their computer and the web. MWSF Keynote Day -1
Tomorrow, the MWSF Keynote will take place at 10h00 PST (18h00 CET), marking the beginning of the last MWSF officially sponsored by Apple. Only the WWDC will still remain as the only 100% Apple-sponsored yearly event. Exper Style's colorful 8.9-inch netbook rolls out in Turkey
We don't have a heck of a lot to go on here, but the above is apparently a new, 8.9-inch widescreen netbook from Exper called the Exper Style. It seems to boast standard netbook internals -- a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, and an 8GB SSD-- and apparently runs Windows XP. LG gets official with Netflix-enabled Broadband HDTVs
Yup, it's official. LG will be showcasing the world's first Netflix-enabled HDTVs at CES this week. The so-called Broadband HDTVs will arrive in plasma and LCD flavors, though exact screen sizes and model names have yet to be disclosed. They'll arrive with Netflix streaming software baked right in, meaning that no external set-top-box will be required to suck down Watch Instantly material. Best of all, it sounds like HD Netflix content will also be supported, and with the accompanying remote, viewers will be able to "read synopses, rate movies and fast-forward / rewind the video stream." Symwave kündigt Demonstration des neuen USB-3.0-Standards an
USB-Speichersticks mit 8 GB sind inzwischen zu Schnäppchenpreisen von rund 15 Euro zu haben. Einen solchen Speicherstick mit USB 2.0 vollständig zu beschreiben dauert im Idealfall rund 2,7 Minuten – in der Praxis eher vier bis fünf Minuten. Auch externe Festplatten, mit 1 TB Speicherkapazität und mehr, werden über USB 2.0 zunehmend ausgebremst, denn während moderne Festplatten Datendurchsätze von rund 100 MB/s erreichen, liegt das theoretische Maximum des USB-Standards bei bestenfalls 58 MB/s. Um die weit verbreitete Schnittstelle nicht zum Flaschenhals werden zu lassen, hat ein Industriekonsortium – angeführt vom Prozessorhersteller Intel – im November 2008 die Spezifikationen des Nachfolgestandards USB 3.0 verabschiedet. Die Firma Symwave, die integrierte Schaltungen für Schnittstellen wie USB und Firewire entwickelt, hat nun angekündigt, auf der vom 8. bis 11. Chipindustrie meldet Umsatzrückgang im November

Stuff.tv has the heads up on two more members of LG's 2009 lineup, the LH5000 and LF7700. The LF7700 LCD should fit the bill for anyone needing an alternative to Panasonic's TX-37LZD81, with integrated FreeSat support, while a plasma version will follow later in the year. PowerBook G4 Titanium inelegantly modded into desktop
We're all for taking lemons and making lemonade, but at least clean up the mess before you showcase it to the world. All kidding aside (sort of), Sir Bibin and Nick Lee found something better to do with their jacked up PowerBook G4 Titanium than fetch a few pennies on eBay. When the hinges finally cracked, they decided to just fold 'er on over, epoxy a pair of totally lackluster speakers on the side and add a wired Apple keyboard in to create a makeshift PowerMac (er, iMac, we suppose). Freescale's i.MX515 netbook processor promises low cost, long battery life
Look out, Intel -- the whole world's gunning for you, with both VIA (possibly, anyway) and now Freescale looking to snag a sliver of the netbook CPU pie. Reportedly, the latter company will be debuting a netbook-centric chip at CES this week from its i.MX line. More specifically, the i.MX515 -- which is based on the Cortex-A8 core from ARM -- will aim for miniature laptops that sit at or below the almost mythical $199 price point. Das vielleicht letzte Gerücht, bevor dann hoffentlich auf der Keynote ein überarbeiteter Mac mini vorgestellt wird. Die Quellen von AppleInsider bestätigen, dass der Mac mini wohl auf dem MCP76-Chipset von NVIDIA basieren wird. Zudem soll das Gerät nicht nur einen Mini DisplayPort, sondern auch Mini DVI besitzen. Während die Verwendung von DisplayPort keine Überraschung darstellt, wäre Mini DVI als Zweitschnittstelle ungewöhnlich, da letztere bei den Mac-Notebooks nicht mehr vorhanden sind.

Damit könnte 2009 Schluss sein: Es wird nur noch mit einem Anstieg um 81 Prozent gerechnet. Was immer noch nach viel klingt, kann für die Hersteller der Speicher durchaus Konsequenzen haben. Lenovo has just dropped the dime on its new IdeaPad Y Series notebooks, including the 14-inch Y450, the 15.6-inch Y550 and the 16-inch Y650.
