17-inch unibody MacBook Pro with non-removable battery rumored for Macworld
9to5Mac is reporting that a unibody, 17-inch MacBook Pro will be announced at Macworld, following in the footsteps of the previously released unibody 13 and 15-inchers. The rumor, backed up by some "whisperers" at Macrumors, isn't really an earth-shattering surprise -- though the accompanying revelation that this model is expected to have a slim, extended-life, non-removable battery is rather eye-opening -- and somewhat disappointing, considering the lameness of non-removable batteries. We'll know for sure on Tuesday at the keynote.Update: Apple Insider is also independently confirming

Meizu Does Not Only copy Apple Products... its Apple Store Design Too
Meizu is well known for releasing copies of numerous Apple products, especially iPods and iPhone. The last M8 mobile phone model from the company is a good example:
However, it goes even further. Hereafter is a photo of Meizu shop in Shenzen in China:
Even the presentation of products and the design of the shop is very similar to the Apple Store concept (in shapes, colors and styles). For a direct comparison:
Of course, it would be crazy to change a winning formula, however, not sure that Apple really enjoys to be so heavily copied

Android tattoo girl
Natalie "Kommodore" Thompson just joined the rarified ranks of Zune Guy and the BlackBerry Storm Cankle Man with her very own Android tattoo. While obviously a fan of the brand new mobile OS, she says she did it mostly to show her support of open source in general, and ol' Tux lost out to the more-adorable little green bot (known affectionally around the Engadget HQ as "Marvin"). Add in that shutter shades t-shirt -- for a 100x multiplier -- and we're likely dealing with our very first fit-for-society tattoo nerd. Too bad she only dates robots.Filed under:

Kodak's rugged Zx1 handheld camcorder does 720p in the jungle
Kodak's 720p Zi6 has only been out for six months, but already we're seeing what's likely its beefed-up predecessor. The mighty Zx1 is debuting here at CES, and with it comes a 2-inch LCD monitor, easy upload to YouTube, 720p HD video capture at 60fps, an IP43-certified weather-resistant design and an SD / SDHC card slot that can understand media up to 32GB in size. All told, users can capture up to ten hours of high-def video, and the bundled HDMI cable makes showing off recent grabs as easy as pie. The Zx1 will arrive in five colors (pink, blue, yellow, red and black) and will include pre-charged AA Ni-MH rechargeable batteries along

Good heavens, it's been years since we've seen anything noteworthy leave the labs of Power Quotient International. Thankfully, the outfit will be relevant once more when CES rolls around, as its forthcoming SSD line has quite a few big hitters. First up is the 1.8-inch microSATA SSD S518, which is destined to squeeze into tight spaces in capacities of up to 125GB, while the 32GB ExpressCard SSD S520 finally gives you a reason to utilize that funky slot over there that's gone untouched for months. Steve Jobs as CTO-USA, ZOMG
An interesting question has been floated over at Mac Soda. Maybe Steve Jobs bailing on Macworld (and also on Apple) is somehow related to his appointment as Obama's Chief Technology Officer. Just for fun, let's consider the connections.
Obama is an Apple fan, we know he and his team use Macs. And yes he does jog with an iPod (who doesn't?). Apple, as did most of Silicon valley, largely supported Obama's presidency. And there was the Obama iPhone App. Obama has a

Chinavasion's plug-in MP3 player / FM transmitter / etcetera is surprisingly useful
Chinavasion's latest piece of steaming trash is actually very un-trash-like, as it thoughtfully meshes a number of in-car technologies into one single cigarette adapter doodad. The Plug-In Car MP4 Player with LCD Display manages to bundle an MP4 / MP3 player, 1.5-inch LCD and 4GB of memory into a device that plugs neatly into your car's cigarette adapter, and the inclusion of an FM transmitter means that you won't even need to bring your own DAP to get tunes flowing in the car. Moreover, the SD card slot enables even more jams to be loaded on if you're embarking on a serious road trip, and the USB socket makes PC-to-whatchamacallit transfers a cinch. We're truly impress

Brando's 7-in-1 USB charging cable is a handheld owner's dream come true
It's truly heartbreaking that this gem wasn't available for purchase back when you desperately needed a low-cost gift for that special gamer in your life, but considering how lame the chocolate box you got him / her was, there's still reason to snap this up and slap a belated label on it. Brando's ingenious 7-in-1 USB Charging Cable provides power for PSP, DS, DS Lite, DSi and Game Boy Advance handhelds, and all that is required is a powered USB port and $7. Oh, and the bravery to allow a cable made by Brando (or some random backwoods company in China that Brando is in cahoots with) charge hundreds of dollars worth of your gadgetry.[Via

Researchers tapping into nanotechnology for sharper images
A team of scientists at the University of Glasgow just came into all sorts of cash, and they'll be using it to advance imaging. If you're looking for specifics (and we're assuming you are), a £489,234 grant from the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council will be used to study a certain phenomenon called surface plasmon resonance, "which is an effect exhibited by certain metals when light waves fall onto their surfaces." In short, the gurus behind the research are hoping to discover a method of "creating patterns or small nanostructures in the metal film on the CMOS, which should increase the sensitivity of the sensor and result in higher quality images." The bad news? The project is expected to last until 2012, which i

Creative axes 2,700 jobs, simultaneously lowers expectations for Zii
While the hype is bubbling over surrounding Creative's Zii "stemcell computing," the outfit obviously doesn't think whatever it is will turn things around. Instead, it has chosen to cut some 2,700 jobs -- nearly half of its workforce -- as "demand for its music players tumbled." According to a report filed to Singapore's stock exchange on December 31, 2008, the company had 3,100 full time employees at the end of June 2008, which is around 47% lower than what was posted a year prior. 'Course, we suppose the cuts aren't all that surprising after posting a net loss of $19.7 million on the lowest revenues in five years, but it still makes us wonder just how confident the co

3M's MPro110 pocket projector reviewed: okay for geeks, so it's okay for you
3M's MPro110 never set out to blow minds, just to wow those who thought projectors could never be this small. According to Gadling's hands-on review, it achieved its goal(s). With a brightness of just 7 lumens, the actual image that it produced wasn't exactly stunning, but it was deemed "far from useless." The biggest knock was just how limited it was in terms of real-world usage; unless the room was perfectly dark, it wasn't the most gorgeous thing to look at, which means those midday sales presentations may not fly if there's a window in the room. In the end, the MPro110 was found

Apple 17 inch MacBook Pro to go unibody, lose removable battery
Our folks in Asia are at it again with some pretty startling news. The 17 inch MacBook Pro is going Unibody like the 13 inch and 15 inch models. That, in itself isn't really that big a deal, it was expected really. The news is that Apple is making a super slim battery pack for the 17 inch MacBook Pros that will last much longer than current models. Additionally, you won't be able to remove said battery pack. It will be inside the machine, just like iPods and iPhones. Removal will not be able to be done by most users.
Those of us with three year old MacBook Pros can attest that batteries lose performance over time so it isn't quite clear how Apple will deal with this. They may have new technology that can take more charges, or they may offer an i

All unwarranted sarcasm aside, Originatic is planning to reveal a rather unique machine at CES, with the Smart-Leaf PC boasting a "space-saving" in-wall design with a fold-out, spill-proof keyboard, touchscreen panel, WiFi module and even a TV tuner. For those with incredibly acute memories, you'll likely recall that this very rig debuted in prototype form at last year's CES, though the commercialized Oasis and Mountain variants will be ready for shipping in March.
