Belkin introduces DisplayPort cable
Filed under: CES, Displays, PeripheralsExhilarating, we know, but it is somewhat notable that Belkin has introduced a DisplayPort cable for the emerging connector. From what we can tell, there's nothing exceptionally special about it outside of its early release, but you will be paying a pretty penny for it when it actually lands. Depending on cable length (3-, 6- or 10-feet), you'll be asked to drop $59.99 to $109.99, and you can make said purchase this April in the US or later in 2008 in Canada, Europe, Asia a

Mio, however, will continue as a brand in the UK, Spain, Australia, and New Zealand. Both are already subsidiaries of Mitac which acquired Navman back in February. The move is said to merge the hardware competency of Mio with the software expertise of Navman. 'Twas just an inevitability, really.

Audiovox reveals Digital Message Centers: perfect for refrigerators
Filed under: CES, Household
Yeah, it's true -- we've got a soft spot for quirky refrigerator magnets, so we're inclined to take favor with Audiovox's Digital Message Centers. As you can see above, the fridge-mountable units enable users to display photos for family to see, and folks can even record audio or video messages (on the DPF711K only) for others via the integrated camera / microphone. As if that wasn't snazzy enough, you can even tag messages to a calender for playback on specific dates, and we'd imagine the content would look fairly decent on the 7-inch 480 x 234 display. Think your kitchen's ready for it? You can grab the video-capable DPF711K for $199.99 or the audio-only DPF710K for $40 less.

Penryn Officially Unveiled
As expected, Intel officially unveiled today its Penryn CPUs, with 5 models dedicated to its mobile platform:
T8100: 2.1 GHz 3MB cache FSB 800 MHz
T8300: 2.4 GHz 3MB cache FSB 800 MHz
T8930: 2.5 GHz 6MB cache FSB 800 MHz
T9500: 2.6 GHz 6MB cache FSB800 MHz
X9000: 2.8 GHz 6MB cache FSB800 MHz
The last model should find its way in the iMac, as its TDP makes it unfriendly for being use in notebook (or it would strongly reduce battery lifetime).
If the clock frequency did not significantly increase when compared to the first Santa Rosa-dedicated CPUs, the Penryn and their SSE4 instruction set bring a substantial gain of performance for multimedia applications, and will be noticeably enjoyed by Mac users with 10.5.2.
The improved power management technology included in Penryn mobile CPU should further increase battery lifetime (such as turning L1 and L2 cache off when the CPU is idle).
So, with such new mobile CPU offer, one will simply need to imag

DISH Network unveils 100 HD channels and 100 markets
Filed under: HDTV, Home EntertainmentAlthough we're still waiting to start our live coverage of the DISH Network press event on Engadget (not to be confused with Engadget HD) at 11am PST, the releases are already starting to flow. With DirecTV stealing all the limelight at last year's show, many have great expectations for DISH this year and it appears DISH is up for the challenge. HD DVD looks back on 2007
Filed under: CES, Home EntertainmentIn a press release, the HD DVD Group is rallying the demoralized troops around the accomplishments made in 2007. Citing almost one million players in North America and a good (by HDM standards) library of titles, 2007 was a good year for the red camp. There's the requisite cherry picking of factoids, but the release does play to HD DVD's strengths of affordability and interactive features. We're glad to see HD DVD put on a brave face; and as we've said, HD DVD has been declared "dead" before. Maybe this is sign that team red has shaken off the cobwebs from this week's blows. Hands-on with Panasonic's Link to Cell KX-TH1211
Filed under: CES, Misc. Gadgets
Panasonic's Link to Cell KX-TH1211 is quite the interesting piece. Hailed as a "mobile phone accessory that seamlessly connects a Bluetooth enabled cell phone to cordless handsets in the home," this device simply enables users to make and receive cell calls from a home-based phone. Panny talks up its ability to preserve battery life and offer up "better reception," but the real heat comes from the included talking caller ID. Additionally, the Link to Cell is expandable to up to six handsets, and if you've just got to have this little gem, you can snag it in two months for $99.95. Another pic awaits you after the jump.

Apple Invents the iMacBook
Source : http://gizmodo.comCouple of days before the MWSF, while Mac rumor sites are releasing photos supposed to illustrate future products from Apple, a new patent issued by Apple might defined how Cupertino is designing the future of docking station for notebooks. So far, such devices were composed of stations already linked to a display and other peripherals.
The last patent from Apple illustrates how one can transform a MacBook into an iMac. If the concept looks interesting, Apple will have to add a new connector for connecting the notebook to the iMac station, and also develop a system to cool down the components located inside the notebook when being "docked" into the iMac.

First, it seems that SSD drive will be one of the most expected products this year, with numerous companies unveiling their offer, including Intel. It also illustrates how this solid state storage solution can offer both performance and space to save your data. Fast SSD are usually obtained with SLC chips, however, one can not achieve high density with such design, and the storage capacity of such drive will be rapidly limited. To increase space, manufacturers have developed MLC chips, allowing much larger storage capacity at the cost of writing speed and

Warner Home Video drops HD DVD support
Source : DailytechWhile it remains unclear which format will win the blue- laser-based battle, the Warner Home Video announced that it will exclusively distribute its movies in Blu-ray format in a near future.
Of course, no one knows if such announcement was obtained after negotiating partnership and/or financial compensation with Sony, but one can also imagine that Warner decided to choose one side to speed up the end of this battle.
This news was a surprise for Toshiba-leaded alliance, and a 1:1 HD-DVD conference at the CES 2008 was even cancelled.
Of course it will not put an end to this war, as the Paramount has made the opposite choice, by exclusively distributing its catalog in HD-DVD.

All signs pointed to this sucker existing, and sure enough, here it is.

We caught some time with Lenovo's new Ideapads and they're pretty hot -- but a little bit bigger than we were expecting, particularly the 15-inch Y510. Mitsubishi arms the FL7000U projector

Filed under: Displays, HDTVAs expected, Sony has released the first OLED display in the US, with the 11-inch XEL-1 available now at select Sony Style locations for $2,500. Japanese customers have been able to purchase the 3mm-thick XEL-1 since late last year for ¥200,000, but the US has had to wait until now to get its organically 1,000,000:1-contrasted fix. The XEL-1 also offers support for DMeX so consumers can download content via the BRAVIA I

Sony debuts Sound Wall media stand-surround sound combo
Filed under: CES, Home Entertainment
Craving the custom install look, but not willing to tear down walls to get it? Sony has debuted the Sound Wall RHT-S10 stand for all your HT gear, and it's packing 5.1 surround sound to boot. The free-standing unit has a TV mount, amplifier and subwoofer all built in. Hang the display, route any wires behind the unit and plug everything together at the A/V rack in the base and you're all set. But hey, what about the rear channels in this 5.1 system? Those rear signals are mixed in with the fronts -- combined with Sony's S-Force Pro, they claim you don't need those pesky channels any more. We're skeptical, but they've packed in some good featur

Video: Casio EX-F1 rapid fire shooter hands-on
Filed under: Digital Cameras, Features
Ok, we'll cop-to. We've got a hankerin' for Casio's new EX-F1. The same unit we went hands-on with back in October is back only now in a production body rockin' that same 60fps frame rate. Hell, don't listen to us swoon though, check the video hands-on after the break and let Casio walk you through the details highlighted by a 15 shot burst (with flash!) blinding of a Casio colleague.

Casio intros a handful of new compact cams that play nice with iTunes
Filed under: CES, Digital Cameras
It's not all crazy high-speed prosumer hybrid cameras for Casio today, as the company also dropped a few new Exilim point-and-shoots. All the new cams shoot video in iPod / iPhone-friendly H.264, and Casio's really playing up that fact -- even showing a slide about it during their press conference. The new Exilim Card EX-S10 (pictured) manages to pack a full 10 megapixels, 3X optical zoom, a 2.7-inch LCD, and stereo microphones into its 1-inch thick frame -- which means we're a little curious as to how noisy that senso

The $700 DSLR-A200K kit comes with the body and a DT 18-70mm f3.5-5.6 3.9x zoom lens, while the $900 DSLR-A200W includes the camera body, the aforementioned lens, and a 75-300mm f4.5-5.6 lens. Sony's new mylo hands-on
Filed under: CES, Features, Handhelds
If you're a mylo fan, you're pretty stoked right now. We're doing our best to refrain from calling this thing the mylo 2 (namely because it's just the new "mylo," official designation COM-2 mylo), but we did get to kick the tires on it, and it's pretty clear how huge an improvement the new model really is. Unfortunately, that's not saying a whole lot, given the state of the original mylo -- but the new one? Really not so bad. Granted, the crisp, high res touchscreen wasn't quite sensitive enough for our taste, and it didn't really seem intended for use with a stylus, and most of the big new features

Hands-on with the Philips BDP-7200 Blu-ray player
Filed under: CES, Features, Home Entertainment
Philips just wrapped up their press conference, and we got our hands on their new BDP-7200 Blu-ray player. It looks like a pretty standard Profile 1.1 player, albeit with rounded corners and bezel pretties to match the language across the Philips Design Collection. The press release is kinda sketchy on the internals of this player -- no surprise, as Philips is emphasizing style over specs in their lineup. Consistent with that play, features like Philips EasyLink (aka CEC) gets billing over the internals. So the jury's still out on how the DeepColor, 1080p24 looks out of this unit. Bu
