Filed under: CES, Home Entertainment, Portable Video
Philips' Streamium line of wireless media streamers / extenders just keeps getting better-looking as time goes on, and the new 7500 series continues that tradition in style. Apart from the nifty new upright design, these are pretty much the same Streamium kit you know and love: the WACS7500 hub (left) has an 80GB disk for direct ripping, both Ethernet and built-in WiFi for connecting to your PC for content retrieval, and internet radio support. For those not down with sound-bar Ambisound HTS6100, perhaps the more modular mouthful of the HTS6515D is up your alley. The integrated, multi-connection-compatible pancake is definitely another classy looking entry to the Philips line this year, though we can't help but wish for maybe a Blu-ray drive instead of the built-in DVD player. Let's face it -- you'll throw the baby out with the bathwater when you upgrade in a year. Still, you can feast your eyes on the clean lines in the gallery below.Gallery:

Yes, we're back. This time it's Sharp doing the presser honors. Once again, they've rolled out their uber-thin LCD for all to gaze upon. This time however, it's a 65-inch version with that same 1-inch thickness. Hoozah! Fortunately they have lunch for us. Filed under: CES, Features
We managed to squeeze in and get our grubby mitts all over Panasonic's newest entry to the HD camcorder market, the HDC-SD9 and it was sweet. We're not sure if the pictures can do it justice, but this thing is super tiny. The company is claiming that it's the "smallest and lightest" full HD camera available, and we're inclined to agree. The 1080p cam uses SD cards for storage, and seems to have the electronics-maker's new 32GB SDHC card in mind for trapping your precious memories. iriver's "a player" redefines fashionDAP
Filed under: CES, Portable Audio
While iriver's P10 is undoubtedly a looker, the "a player" (or perhaps the "homme," it's hard to tell which is the actual title) pretty much just makes everybody else manufacturing mini-DAPs look bad. There's virtually zero info on this player, at least in English, but that never stopped us from gawking before. There does seem to be a small screen on the flip side of this player, but that may be the "a player II." Again, our failure to grasp the Korean language sets us back. Hopefully iriver will be

Moletech Fuel Saver theoretically saves fuel

Fujitsu revs the Lifebook P-series with the P8010
Filed under: CES
The Lifebook P7000 series has been getting pretty long in the tooth -- you know the end is near when the pink models show up -- and Fujitsu's taking the opportunity at CES to replace it with the P8000 series. The new P8010 bumps the screen size up to 12 inches and retains the P-series's built-in optical drive, but manages to come in even trimmer than the outgoing P7230, at just 2.7 pounds. A 1.2GHz Intel ULV U7600 Core 2 Duo and Vista combine to provide a 9-hour battery life with the standard battery, and Fujitsu will be shipping an extended life unit that'll go for 11 hours. South Korea's first satellite: lost in space
Filed under: Misc. Gadgets
According to disheartening news out of Korea, the country's Aerospace Research Institute is reporting that they've lost contact with its first multipurpose satellite, the Arirang 1. The satellite, which was launched December 21st, 1999, is suspected of having encountered a mechanical malfunction or misalignment which would have affected power generation. "If the satellite loses proper alignment, its solar panels cannot generate power that is vital for the machine," said an "expert" -- which the source material suspiciously won't name -- which further reinforces our belief that the satellite was appropriated by an alien lifeform, for use in a bizarre mating ritual.

Touch Bionics has i-LIMB bionic arm to go with your bionic hand
Filed under: Robots
The mad scientists from Touch Bionics are at it again. After delivering their i-LIMB bionic hand last year, they're moving on up the, uh body and are announcing their sophomore effort: the i-LIMB bionic arm. Like their bionic hand, the arm is controlled via learned muscle movements picked up by electrodes placed on the user's chest and is covered in a "realistic cosmetic skin." The only real problem with the i-Limb bionic arm isn't so much a problem in our books, as it is an advantage: it's stronger than your old-fashioned human arms. Of course, with that power comes a whole bunch of

Gates and space-ace Simonyi gift $30m for giant telescope
Filed under: Misc. Gadgets
The currently terrestrial Bill Gates and his former (and space-faring) Microsoft colleague, Charles Simonyi, have donated a cool $30m to a project that aims to build "the world's largest survey telescope" (cleverly) called the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. On Thursday, the group said that Gates and Simonyi had donated $10m and $20m respectively to help develop the telescope, which Gates says "is truly an Internet telescope, which will put terabytes of data each night into the hands of anyone that wants to explore." The 8.4-meter telescope, which sports three large mirrors and three

Perpetual motion machine... isn't
Finally -- the laws of physics have been smashed to itty-bitty, succulent bits, like a thin piece of glass obliterated by a cartoon anvil -- all in some dude's low-lit basement. According to the video which you can watch after the break, a mysterious entity known as Alsetalokin has laser-gunned the forces of the universe to death with a perpetual motion device which he's demonstrated on an obscure internet website called YouTube. Like Fox Mulder, we want to believe, but just like the fate of Steorn's Orbo, this is looking like another quickly-debunked fiasco. After a few hours of this clip d

Emtrace makes a return to CES this year with their Photoskins, new WiFi WidgetStation version 2, and more importantly launch details. Unfortunately, the WidgetStation 2, which appears to be the more useful of the two information appliances with that big, segmented display, is just an engineering prototype meant to gauge market reaction. Hey Emtrace, we like it. The tiny Photoskin (or is that plural?) runs Linux on an ARM920T processor and will hit the US "late summer" for about $150 with complete access to their WidgetOne

Microbial fuel cell insights bring practical poo power closer to reality
Filed under: Misc. GadgetsIt's been a while since we had an update from the exciting frontier of microbial fuel cell technology, but researchers at Arizona State University's Biodesign Institute report a recent breakthrough in understanding exactly why bacteria seem to enjoy donating their electrons for the potential betterment of gadgetkind. The ASU team developed an equation that describes the relationship between the rate of bacterial metabolism and the electrical potential of the fuel cell, enabling a much more accurate model of how an MFC actually works. The researchers are working with this information to optimize fuel cell perform

DeLorme introduces the GPS LT-40 for PCs of all types
Filed under: GPS
The lovely, charming, and handsome folks over at DeLorme are all hot and bothered about their company's latest laptop and UMPC compatible GPS unit, the Earthmate GPS LT-40. The little yellow device sports an STMicroelectronics Teseo chipset, which apparently improves upon the heartbreaking and sub-par "satellite signal retention" and "positional accuracy" you've come to expect from other providers. The chip is even capable (they say) of finding your location in hard-to-reach areas, like around skyscrapers, or in a black hole. Additionally, the LT-40 is Galileo-ready, and uses a little someth

Whoomp! Earbud Enhancers keep headphones in place

Because we'd love to stuff our iPod earbuds just a little deeper into our ear canals, a 3M spin-off called Hearing Components has developed a plastic and foam accessory that snaps onto the buds and promises to both keep them in place as well as improve sound quality. However, the so-called Whoomp! Earbud Enhancers themselves don't seem to contain any audio enhancing technology, but rather serve to simply direct the music deeper into your head holes. Twenty bucks is all it takes to score a two-pack of these in either black or white, although you really need to factor in the cost of future visits
