Video: Hands-on with Neonode media playing GPS prototype and more
Filed under: GPS
What do you do when you've got a hot UI built upon a red-hot touch screen technology? Diversify and conquer, naturally. Today, Neonode is showing off a new media playing GPS device in their booth at CES. The fully functional, engineering prototype may or may not be brought to market under Neonode's brand as they consider licensing their IP to the big SatNav boys. Whatever happens, we likey. They were also showing off concepts of their Neonode MP3 player (not working) and media player (working). While you wouldn't catch us watching a full length video on that tiny screen, we'll dole out the love to Neonode for showing us a glimpse of their future. Click on the through for video of the GPS device or check the gallery for the Neonode media player.

LG's CES 2008 booth tour
LG's booth seemed to be strangely dominated by mobiles -- and then we found the other half. Though it's not atypical for mega-corps to bring their A-game to CES, LG really broke out the checkbook on its massive installation. Everything from handsets to (walls of) flat-panels were on display, so do yourself a favor and check out the walkthrough below.

San Francisco man busted for stash of 50,000 pirated DVDs
Filed under: Home EntertainmentSanta Clara County police arrested a 27-year-old "entrepreneur" with roughly 50,000 pirated DVDs stashed. The estimated street value of the collection adds up to $250k, and the movies naturally included titles currently in theaters -- including the critically acclaimed "Alvin and the Chipmunks." Police found the stash thanks to a 911 hang up at the man's home, and currently have him sitting in jail while everybody waits for the MPAA to redouble its consumer education efforts on this menace to society -- we're going to run out of plastic, people. [Thanks, Paul B]

Pioneer's CES 2008 booth tour

Although we were fairly impressed by Pioneer's booth at CEDIA last year, we were left pretty underwhelmed by its showing at CES. Notably, the helpings of KUROs were interestingly complemented by loads of car audio equipment, but nevertheless, all the goods it had to offer are showcased below.

Sony working on an A200-ish DSLR with flip-out LCD?

According to the Dyxum forums -- which tracked down these images on some Chinese / Taiwan forums -- Sony's prepping this here DSLR with a flip-screen, and that's all that's known at the moment. The main body is pretty similar to that of the A200, but the internals and other modifications are anyone's guess. [Via Dyxum]

Hands-on with the 3G Neonode N2.5... yes, N2.5
Filed under: Cellphones
While most of the US is just getting their first glimpse of the Neonode N2, we've got the Neonode N2.5 for you dear readers. We were assured that this engineering protoype features a heftier battery to offset complaints raised by N2 owners. The other complaint -- lack of 3G data -- is also solved. It will also feature A2DP-enabled Bluetooth 2.1 (yes, 2.1) when its ships (no time specified) and a big fat 3G radio of unspecified type. Thing is, this time, the N2.5 is specifically targeted at the US market with Neonde already starting to sort through the carrier quagmire in order to bring it to market. WiFi? Maybe, that all depends upon the carrier's demands.

Call us crazy, but one of the most attractive parts of having an artificial limb is the decidedly robotic aesthetic (and potential super strength), but we totally understand why some people would be interested in having something a little more natural. Cue the Pentagon-backed researchers who are "creating patches of synthetic skin that'll provide direct feedback to the brain" for inclusion in artificial limbs as early as 2010, reports Danger Room. The "skin" is made of a "rubbery polymer called polyimide" and infused with carbon nanotubes (think

Super Soaker inventor looking to double solar efficiency

Well, now that you're all caught up with Basic Gadgetology 101, we'll fill you in what he's been up to lately. Johnson has developed a new solar technology called the Johnson Thermoelectric Energy Conversion System (JTEC for the acronym-inclined), which is "like a conventional heat engine." A closed box system takes heat as an input, creates pressure from heat differential, which generates electricity by forcing ions through a micron-thick ceramic membrane. We've seen it in pics, but now we get to hold it. The new Lenovo MID being shown off at the Intel booth at this year's CES can't help but remind us of one of our favorite old game systems the Atari Lynx. Beyond that, it sports another Linux-based interface, with a decent looking UI put on top -- though we're pretty underwhelmed by the resistive touchscreen's response. We're not sure what they think we're going to do with that number pad on the side unless this can be used as a phone, perhaps. Take a look at the pics and judge for yourself.Gallery:

While the UI wasn't up and running, just holding the thing, and checking out the demo shots of the interface was enough to give us big chills. It's thing, it's light, and we have to say, pretty darn fresh. If they keep up with this kind of work, we're fully prepared to be blown away in the future. Of note: the rep here claimed that the company now has even smaller and thinner versions of this thing in prototype -- though they don't seem to be at CES, and he kept reiterating that the pro

Fraunhofer says HD-ACC will make CDs "obsolete"
Filed under: Portable AudioThose Fraunhofer folks are nothing if not prolific, and it now looks like they're getting a little boastful as well, as evidenced by some comments reps from the group made at CES this week. As MacWorld reports, Fraunhofer IIS is not only saying that its new HD-ACC codec is "better than CD," but that it "makes CDs obsolete." That is apparently due to the codec's lossless compression of 24-bit music content, as opposed to the 16-bit, 44.1 kHz quality now found on CDs. What's more, the HD-AAC encoding process embeds a so-called "core layer" on any device that supports plain old AACs, although you'll obviously need a player with an H

Hooray, another budget camcorder from DXG. Perfect for "teens, college students, young adults, and women" who apparently all fit into the category of lovers of cheap, questionable quality recorders. The DXG-565V is a 5 megapixeler capable of recording 720 x 480 pixel MPEG-4 video at 30fps. It'll even play back Hannah Montana MP3s in a crunch. Rounding things out are a 2.4-inch LCD, 0x optical zoom (yes, zero), and "5 cool colors" including pink and daddy-I-want-a-trust-fund-NOW. Just $99 for you, sweetie.

Unfortunately, we're way short on specs, but we do know that it'll be coming in $199 pre-built and $99 barebones versions. Digital photo frames are anything but a rare commodity at this year's CES, and you can now add another batch to the tally, these ones coming to us from CEIVA. Rounding things out are the 8-inch CEIVA Pro 80 (also with WiFi), the 8-inch CEIVA Life with connections for a phone line or broadband, and the 8-inch CEIVA Share, which uses only a plain-old phone line to

Taser reveals Music Player Holster for your C2
Filed under: CES, Misc. GadgetsSo yeah, Taser International is indeed introducing a leopard print C2 "personal protection device" here at CES, but honestly, that's not what caught our eye. Rather, the MPH (Music Player Holster) -- which is a 1GB DAP / C2 holster combination -- has absolutely and completely captured our imagination. Regrettably, little else is mentioned about the device, but the way we see it, it's all we needed to finally push us into ordering a C2 to call our own.[Image courtesy of MSNBC]

VTech launches IS6110 instant messaging phone
Filed under: CES, Misc. Gadgets
Let's just get this out of the way: VTech packed a lot of ugly into the IS6110. That said, the phone isn't too shabby, using DECT 6.0 for call clarity, and supporting AIM and Windows Live Messenger instant messaging. To set it up you just plug the phone into a standard outlet, plug a USB cable into your PC and start LOL'ing all your buddies with abandon. The full QWERTY keyboard and color LCD should make the IM experience passable, but we're guessing this is going to be a price of quality scenario, with

Hands-on with the Packard Bell EasyNote XS / Nanobook

Well, we've finally gotten some face time with the Packard Bell EasyNote XS / Nanobook / Cloudbook / FIC CE260. Sure, it's hard to keep tabs on the various re-brands and name changes of this thing, but one thing is for sure -- it's got the potential to give the Eee a run for its money. The ultraportable feels pretty good -- if a bit plastic-y -- in your hand, and it seemed to handle XP with relative ease. We kind of wish we'd seen some gOS on this puppy -- but hey, you can't have it all. Check the gallery below and see it yourself.Gallery: Hands-on with the Packard Bell EasyN

XstreamHD details continue to emerge
Just a few hours before our live coverage of the XStreamHD press event (11am PST) with Michael Douglas; many of the details have been released and we have to say this thing looks so incredible, we don't see how it can live up to the press release -- this is one of those times when we'd really love to be wrong. For starters, the service promises to deliver "the latest content from leading studios" in 1080p (MPEG-2 and x.264) with 7.1 channels of lossless DTS-HD Master Audio (96kHz/24bits) to your home via satellite, and if it stopped there it would be impressive enough, but no. CES: 3M projector for phones, cameras

Korean robots to build high-rises by 2010
Filed under: RobotsDude, Korea knows we've been sending humans to do a robot's job for far too long already, and in a few short years the dangerous world of high rise construction could be left to the true masters of the craft. By 2010, the Korean Construction and Transportation Ministry hopes to have an almost completely automated construction process in place for high-rise projects that could cut labor costs by up to a third, project timelines by 15 percent, and reduce the number of contruction-related injuries on these typically dangerous projects. Of course, an inevitable robotic Jurgis Rudkus will be blowing the whistle on robotic working conditions shortly thereafter. Still, civiliza

A-DATA shows off badly-designed eSATA flash drive

We're not exactly sure what's up with the design here, but apparently, A-DATA felt it was a great idea to unveil an uber-speedy eSATA SSD flash drive that requires both an eSATA and a USB connection. Supposedly, this 16GB to 32GB unit can't actually be plugged directly into an eSATA port as-is, as power from the USB socket is necessary for things to function properly. Essentially, the flash drive has to be connected to the pictured dongle -- which obviously takes up two ports in your machine -- in order to operate. Needless to say, we've all ideas that we'll see a design tweak before these ship en masse.

Sony BMG skips DRM for Platinum MusicPass MP3 gift cards
Filed under: Home Entertainment, Portable Audio
Sony BMG Music Entertainment just announced Platinum MusicPass, retail gift cards which can be traded in for digital music, delivered to you in "high-quality" - and notably DRM-free - MP3 files. No word on precisely what bitrate constitutes high-quality, but for $12.99 (or $19.99 for a couple special edition albums) you can pick up a card from a local retailer, scratch the back, enter the pin number on MusicPass.com and download the MP3s (and sometimes bonus material). Hands-on with the WiBrain B1 UMPC
Filed under: CES, Features
While the crew at Engadget is a little divided over whether the VIA-based WiBrain B1 UMPC is really handsome or really fugly, we did jump at the chance to get our paws all over it. The little device actually feels really good in your hands, though its awkward keyboard would definitely take some getting used to. We did feel right at home with the touchscreen, however, which was amazingly sharp, clear, and pretty darn high-res. Take a look at the gallery below (which includes some size comparisons) and see for yourself. Side note: the VIA rep who was showing the device off says these have launched in the US, but we haven't con

Audiovox launches Lyra "by RCA" A6008 8GB slider DAP
Filed under: CES, Portable Audio
There might be few that mourned the virtual death of the RCA brand, but Audiovox was quick to point it out as the brand that "started the MP3 revolution." We're not really expecting this Lyra A6008 DAP to start another, but it's an interesting device nonetheless given the B-team efforts RCA historically put into its players. The A6008 features 8GB of storage and a 2.4-inch LCD for the quite reasonable pricetag of $200. The slider function unveils a scroll wheel, which we're guessing gives the unit a bit of unnecessary heft, but obviously allows for more player face dedicated to that

It was the end of the day and we're rather charming, so the Mio reps were nice enough to pull their super off-limits dual-front GPS phone prototype out of its glass case and let us play with it a bit. Obviously it's not the most operational thing in the world, but even with its limited functionality we were pretty impressed -- the interface was entertainingly swoopy and the phone parts even worked well enough to almost get service. There was also another connected GPS concept with a SIM slot, but you know us -- we're not taking more than one photo if it
