Devil DAP scares off seekers of genuineness
Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video
At first glance, we assumed the completely misnamed Christmas MP3/MP4 player was merely a mephistophelean covering for an older iPod nano, but apparently, Putian Hengwang Trade Company put in the legwork and actually knocked off a DAP (or at least an interface) from Apple's past. This creature fittingly arrives in red or black and features 1GB, 2GB, 4GB or 8GB of storage, a 1.5- / 1.8-inch display, optional FM tuner and built-in speaker, a rechargeable Li-ion and support for MP3, WMA, WAV and ASF file formats. Sadly, there's no mention of a price, release date or p

Olympus LS-10 portable hi-fi recorder
Filed under: CES, Portable AudioMost portable recording devices leave quite a bit to be desired in the sound quality department, but that's exactly where the Olympus LS-10 is meant to shine. The little aluminum unit records uncompressed 24 bit / 96kHz audio straight to your SD or SDHC card of choice, or the built-in 2GB of internal storage, in your choice of WAV, MP3 or WMA formats. Similar to Sony's PCM-D1, the LS-10 features stereo microphones for giving your bootleg recordings that added touch of realism, and there are built-in stereo speakers fo

Cue Radio plays nice with your iPod
Filed under: CES, Peripherals, Portable Audio, Portable Video
Another day CES, another clock radio that revolves around Apple's darling. This go 'round, we've got Cue Acoustics getting into the exceedingly oversaturated market with its simply-titled Cue Radio. As you can probably glean from its name, this "high-end" device packs an AM / FM radio, an integrated speaker, LCD display, a simplistic, presumably Cupertino-approved design and an obligatory iPod dock on th

Vodafone's 2008 roadmap gets outed, new BlackBerry included

Boy Genius Report has seemingly scooped up a healthy portion of Voda's '08 roadmap here, and with it a host of unannounced devices from various manufacturers. Here's one we kinda expected at this point: a new BlackBerry previously spotted via a shady eBay auction, once thought to be a member of the upcoming 9000 series but identified here as an "8XXX" -- in other words, either RIM or Voda has

Nokia E71 in the wild?
Looks legit enough, doesn't it? The supposed successor to the E61i has broken cover via this shot of the device -- in prototype "EXX" form, no less -- being proudly displayed in some lucky son of a gun's hand. The "E" moniker designates a Nokia smartphone with a business slant, of course, and thanks to a lovely QWERTY board, the E71 seems to be no exception; specs on the E51-ish device are said to be pretty much i

Remember that curious Noahpad UMPC we peeked just as 2007 was coming to a close? Turns out, E-Lead Electronics has finally gotten around to making an official announcement about it, and it will unsurprisingly be debuting at CES. This 7-inch UMPC will indeed utilize the firm's own human machine interface (HMI), and while pricing wasn't provided down to the penny or anything, it will be "within range" of Asus' Eee PC for obvious reasons. Oh, and E-Lead apparently recommends hanging it around your neck while jogging -- now there's a c

Whirlpool's expansive centralpark system gets new upgrades

At this point it's fairly safe to say the whole concept of technology-integrated refrigerators hasn't really caught on, but certainly not because people aren't willing to drop coin on a nice new cooler. Hitachi to phase out 1.0 and 1.8-inch drives, Fujitsu scraps plans to launch them
Filed under: StorageAs the flood of SSD announcements over the past couple days indicates, flash is rapidly gaining ground on traditional hard drive storage, and it may have just claimed it first victims: Hitachi has just announced that it will phase out production of 1.0 and 1.8-inch drives over the next year, and discontinue plans to launch a 1.5-inch line. Hitachi had only shipped 560,000 1.8-inch drives in the July - September quarter, representing only 3.2 percent of its total drive sales, and just a miniscule 3,000 1.0-inch drives in the same period. Hitachi says it'll keep supplying existing customers, but we're hearing that 1.0

Dell 3008WFP 30-inch monitor review roundup
Filed under: Displays
The 3008WFP widescreen LCD, everyone's favorite, 30-inch, DisplayPort-rocking Dell monitor is up for review, and we've got a roundup to prove it. If you'll recall, the behemoth is the first Dell monitor to sport the emerging DisplayPort technology, and it also offers a fairly impressive set of other connectivity options, including dual DVI ports, HDMI, VGA, S-Video, component, and composite. The folks at Hot Hardware weren't totally stoked on the setup process, but loved the screen's performance and flexibility. The cats at Computer Shopper seemed pleased as well, though not head-over-heels in love, particularly with the high price tag and color / graysca

HD DVD group cancels CES press conference in wake of Warner announcement: daaaaaamn
Filed under: CES, HDTVWe just got an email which stated that the HD DVD group is canceling its CES press conference; tail severely between legs over today's explosive news that Warner -- the last "undecided" studio -- was going to the other side and doing Blu-ray discs exclusively. We're not sure if that's because the HD DVD group was in 11th hour negotiations with Warner or what, but the mood at that camp has to be beyond somber right now, so it's pretty hard to thump the tub when you've just been dealt a hard losing hand.

RIAA chief says ripping okay, Sony BMG lawyer "misspoke" during Jammie Thomas trial
Filed under: Portable AudioNow that the furor has died down over the Washington Post's questionable piece about the RIAA supposedly suing Jeffrey Howell for ripping CDs, it's time to hear what the RIAA actually has to say -- and it's surprisingly sensible. Speaking to NPR, RIAA president Cary Sherman flatly said "the story is just wrong." Sherman went on to say that the RIAA hasn't ever prosecuted anyone for ripping or copying for personal use, and that the only issue in the Jeffrey Howell case
