Nook ship date slips to January 11th, supply chain managers weep
Hardware construction is a funny thing. Sometimes, regardless of the money you throw at something, you just can't get products to come together any quicker. Evidently that's the case with Barnes & Noble's Nook, which has seen its estimated ship date slip from today to sometime after the holidays, and now to January 11th. Editorial: The Engadget style guide reaches a MILESTONE
So last week the New York Times Magazine published a piece called "Against Camel Case" which argues that intercapped product names like iPhone and TiVo are "medieval," because they harken back to a time in which people mostly read aloud, slowly sounding out each word as they tried to understand them. Proper word spacing, says the Times, "eventually made possible phenomena like irony, pornography and freedom of conscience."
That's sort of a crazy coincidence -- while we're not so sure word spacing and porn have anything to do with each other, we did just re-do our style guide when we launched our

Moto Droid sales topping 800,000?
Motorola's Droid smartphone may have sold several hundred thousand units in less than a month, RBC Capital Markets analyst Mark Sue said in a research note today. Based on store surveys, the expert believes between 700,000 and 800,000 of the Android devices may have been sold since November 6th. Major Verizon stores could be selling as many as 100 to 200 Droids every week.

nova media plug-ins add support for Nokia N97, N97 mini
nova media has updated its iSync plug-ins with extra support for Nokia smartphones. The collection allows Mac users to sync a phone's contact and calendar information, so long as it is one of over 250 recent models. The update supports Nokia's flagship N97, along with the N97 mini.

Apple rejects Droid app from App Store
Apple has rejected an app advertising the Motorola Droid, according to reports. Called iDroid, the app has only one function, which is to imitate the glowing red eye of the Droid while linking to promotional material. Its developer is noted to be Swavv Apps, which has otherwise produced only two other titles, Beer Pong and Spin the Bottle.

Windows patch triggers "black screen of death"
A Microsoft security fix has inadvertently left some Windows PCs almost inoperable, app developer Prevx warned this weekend. Those running some security apps after applying a November 10th fix have reported the system starting up with a black screen, nicknamed the "black screen of death," that shows only a single Explorer window. It doesn't prevent complete use of the system but bars use of the Start menu and other features on Windows XP, Vista and 7 systems.

Font Sleuth 2.0 adds new windows, improved font searches
ToThePoint has launched an update of its font organizing software, Font Sleuth 2.0. The software groups fonts by customized criteria, and presents WYSIWYG results in a viewer window. Each font can be previewed using sample texts, sizes, colors and alignments. Lists of fonts can be saved and printed.

Nokia to just use Maemo on one phone in 2010?
Despite calls to upgrade quickly, Nokia is going to add just one phone based on its Maemo OS next year, a source said today. A tip to Reuters claims the N900 will get just a single companion model and that the rest of the lineup will continue to use some form of Symbian. The reason behind the supposed decision isn't evident.

Samsung Behold II review
It was but a year ago that Samsung graced us with the original Behold. At the time it was more or less positioned to win the hearts of folks who wanted a luscious touchscreen but had no real truck with smartphones. So what do we have here? NAVIGON preps MobileNavigator 1.4.0 update

Sony to ship TransferJet chips in January
Sony began the week with word that it has developed the first practical chip for its TransferJet short-range wireless standard. The components will enable very high-speed wireless syncing for cameras, smartphones and similar devices, and in the development process has been upgraded from its original 375Mbps; it should now transfer as quickly as 560Mbps (70MB per second) when very close. Sony promises the improvements should boost the format's resistance to wireless interference.

Hot on the heels of news that LG's WinMo-powered pico projector-packin' eXpo is heading for AT&T, Lancerlink has announced a little something called the MPJ-104WCE. This 5.5-inch long projector ships with Windows CE 5.0, 4GB memory, 64GB flash storage, an ARM9 (400MHz) CPU, a USB port, and two 0.5 watt speakers. This guy will project your various docs (including PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WMV, and and MPEG-4) at 640 x 480 resolution, but only in Japan for the time being. PC makers to tie SDXC slots to 32nm notebooks?
Notebook designers are planning to add SDXC to their systems in sync with the mobile Core i3, i5 and i7 processors launching early next year, a purported leak said today. At least Dell, HP and Lenovo are believed to be engineering their notebooks to use the new card format at the same time as they switch to the 32nm processors in January. It would give the PCs recognition of cards up to 2TB in capacity and transfer speeds faster than current solid-state drives, at up to 300MB per second.

USB Inserts bring ads into the print age and back again... or something
Be honest: you really want to crack open a magazine and find one of these paper-thin USB key ads, right? No? Well here's the thing. We really think this is a cool concept -- made to order, die cut USB drives that can be tucked in the pages of a newspaper or magazine (if you know what those are) -- with whatever content a company wants to throw on there. Chrome OS 'Diet' version fits on a 1GB USB key, brings more WiFi support
Not everyone has a 4GB USB key or SD card just lying around, which was required to run Hexxeh's first build of Chromium OS, and we'd say that 8GB keys are exponentially more rare, which is what Dell requires with its build of the Chrome OS open source variant. Well, you can cancel that Fry's run, because Hexxeh is back with a Chrome OS Diet flavor, which cuts the fat and gets the OS onto a 1GB drive. Native iPlayer iPhone app nearing launch?
The BBC is indeed preparing a native iPhone iPlayer client, press material from the broadcaster suggests. The network recently released a presentation of October iPlayer figures, within which can be found a mockup of an iPhone app. Beyond simplifying and accelerating iPlayer for Apple handhelds, the app would appear to support downloads, as well as sending messages to show hosts. Users would likely continue to need a TV license.

Crunchpad dies on CyberMonday or negotiating tactic?
One thing you won't be ale to pick up this CyberMonday is TechCunch founder Michael Arrington's Crunchpad. In a public note today posted on TechCrunch, Arrington says that his partners have tried to renegotiate the terms of the deal and they've given up. Arrington's stance is that their hardware partners are playing hardball and trying to steal their intelectual property. They have no choice but to back out and sue (Arrington's a lawyer)

Dell stellt angepasstes Chrome OS für Netbooks bereit
Dell hat Googles Betriebssystem Chrome OS an seine Netbook-Serie Inspiron Mini 10v angepasst. Laut einem Blogeintrag funktioniert unter dem experimentellem Image grundsätzlich auch der eingebaute Broadcom-WLAN-Adapter des Mini 10v, so dass Nutzer auch drahtlos online gehen können. PSPgo dips to £149 in the UK, have cooler heads prevailed?
While we might think of the $250 PSPgo pricetag in the States as a criminal act on the part of an out-of-touch and-yet-malicious multinational corporation, we can only imagine how our unfortunate counterparts in the UK felt, staring down a £225 list price (about $371 US). Luckily, that quickly dropped to £200 after a week of sales, and now the console can be had for as low as £149 at UK entertainment retailer HMV. That converts rather tidily to $245 US, which is unfortunately about as far as the console has been discounted around these parts. "Twitter" ist laut Global Language Monitor (GLM) das englischsprachige Wort des Jahres 2009. Es bedeutet eigentlich "zwitschern", hat sich aber natürlich nur an die Spitze der Liste gesetzt, weil es auch der Name eines Mikroblogging-Dienstes ist. CrunchPad tablet project self-destructs
News site TechCrunch on Monday said that its CrunchPad tablet project has 'self destructed' due to a legal dispute. The touchscreen slate was to have been unveiled soon but is effectively being shut down as the actual developer, Fusion Garage, has claimed it will sell the device without further input from the co-developer and would only carry the CrunchPad name, using site founder Michael Arrington only as a product evangelist.

EU-Innenminister verabschieden Swift-Abkommen

LG's pico projector-packing WinMo eXpo outed for AT&T
Hey -- what's that? Oh right, it's the LG eXpo, the slider with a pico projector jammed inside. Among other things, the full QWERTY slider's packing a 1GHz CPU, a 3.2-inch touchscreen, a 5 megapixel camera, a microSD slot, and of course that removable Texas Instruments projector. The just-announced handset bears quite a strong resemblance to the Monaco we heard about way back in May -- though from the looks of it, its lost all of the brassiness we were so fond of. The eXpo runs Windows Mobile 6.5, and it will hit AT&T on December 7th for $199 after a mail in rebate with a two year contract.

The CrunchPad disappears in a puff of vapor
Michael Arrington's CrunchPad has never had a particularly firm basis in reality, and although we'd been promised that the inexpensive browser-based tablet would launching soon, the sky's come crashing down: Mike says Fusion Garage, the company he hired to build the CrunchPad, has reneged on their deal, and that he's about to file "multiple lawsuits." Korean iPhone launch shows high numbers
The launch of the iPhone in South Korea has so far proven a success, reports say. The number of pre-orders at carrier KT is believed to have to risen from 53,000 to approximately 65,000 by Saturday's release date, significant in a market where 400,000 smartphones were sold in the third quarter. At a special launch event in Seoul, hundreds of people are said to have lined up for as long as 26 hours in order to buy one of the country's first 1,000 iPhones.

Update: Nokia weist Gerüchte um Verkauf seiner Handyfertigung zurück
Nokia hat Medienberichte dementiert, laut denen der finnische Hersteller seine Handyfertigung verkaufen wolle. MSI Wind U230 gets handled on video, SIM slot found hiding underneath
MSI's latest (and arguably greatest) 12.1-inch netbook just popped official earlier this month, and already it's making the rounds at various shows. Download-Markt wächst auf 250 Millionen Euro

We're filing this one in the "interesting but doesn't mean much" category. Apple sometime last year trasferred the "TabletMac" trademark from Axitron who make those Modbooks out of MacBooks. Samsung sells 50 millionth touchscreen phone
Samsung today said it has sold 50 million full touchscreen phones since putting them on sale in 2008. The symbolic milestone comes as sales have grown from 10 million last year to 40 million this year. Of the collection, a full 10 million are the entry-level Star (S5230), while the Samsung F480 (also known as the Behold or Tocco) represents 9 million. Apple's retail Black Friday traffic may be up or down this year, depending on which analyst an investor chooses to believe. Kunst aus Rubikwürfeln zu machen ist zwar nichts Neues, aber wie im Falle von Cubeworks aus Kanada noch immer sehenswert. Vor allem wenn man sich so ein schönes Portrait seiner Töchter ins Wohnzimmer hängen kann. Verband für deutsche iPhone-Entwickler gegründet
Bereits zum 1. November dieses Jahres wurde der "Verband der iPhone-Entwickler deutschsprachiger Apps" (vieda) von 27 deutschsprachigen Entwicklern gegründet. Der Verband, der sich eine Förderung der Kommunikation und Zusammenarbeit der deutschsprachigen iPhone Entwickler zum Ziel gesetzt hat, möchte künftig als gemeinsame Interessenvertretung auftreten. vieda wird laut eigenem Bekunden ausschließlich professionell arbeitende Entwickler aufnehmen und will künftig regelmäßig durch gemeinsame Marketingaktivitäten, eine gemeinsame App-Plattform von vieda Mitgliedern (Anfang 2010) und ein Zertifikat für professionelle deutschsprachige Apps auf sich aufmerksam machen. Bis Ende des Jahres sollen Entwickler deutschsprachiger Apps die Möglichkeit haben, ihre Apps von "unabhängigen vieda-Prüfern" nach objektiven Kriterien prüfen und im Erfolgsfalle zertifizieren zu lassen. Apple 'bullying' flash memory makers?
Apple was accused on late Sunday by anonymous industry sources of 'bullying' NAND flash memory suppliers through its purchasing tactics. The company has allegedly, knowingly requested more memory from Korean firms Hynix and Samsung on a regular basis than it actually buys when the supply is ready. Large Hadron Collider knackt Weltstromrekord

Der Teilchenbeschleuniger am CERN hatte letztes Jahr bekanntlich Saure-Gurken-Zeit. Jetzt scheint der LHC aber langsam in Schwung zu kommen und hat nun den Energieweltrekord des Tevatron Teilchenbeschleuniger aus Chicago eingestellt. Dieser schaffte nämlich 2001 0,98 TeV (Teraelektronenvolt). Acht Jahre später sind es nun 1,18 TeV, die es in Zukunft zu knacken gilt, wobei der LHC auf eine Leistung von bis zu 7 TeV ausgelegt, am Ende seiner Kapazitätenstange noch lange nicht angelangt ist. Da kann man den Finger nur zur eins heben und gratulieren.

HTC Hero Update auf Android 2.1

Rekord: Download-Markt wächst auf 250 Millionen Euro
Die Deutschen haben 2009 die Rekordsumme von rund 250 Millionen Euro für PC-Downloads ausgegeben. Das sind 18 Prozent mehr als im vergangenen Jahr. Bis Jahresende wird die Anzahl bezahlter Downloads voraussichtlich auf etwa 60 Millionen steigen, was einem Zuwachs von 24 Prozent gegenüber 2008 entspräche. Mogeneration hires iPhone worm writer as app developer
The creator of an iPhone worm has been hired for a legitimate app development job at Mogeneration. Ashley Towns wrote the worm Ikee, a self-propagating program that switched a user's wallpaper to a picture of pop singer Rick Astley. The worm was allegedly not malicious, however it soon lead others to use similar code to obtain bank account login information, according to the BBC. Towns claims he was simply trying to raise awareness of security issues with the iPhone.

Good Start for the iPhone in South Korea
In South Korea, getting a mobile phone is not a straight forward action, and usually requires times and administrative procedures. For the launch of the iPhone in this country on November 28th, Apple and carriers organized a pre-order system to make it easy for customers. Already 50,000 customers reserved their iPhone. This is a excellent result if we consider that in this country two mobile phone manufacturers own the market, Samsung and LG. This figure is certainly important for Apple after the "fiasco-like" launch of the iPhone in China, where we could only get information regarding the 5,000 units sold on the first day. TSMC Drops Its 32-nm Engraving Process
OVer the last 3 years, Intel decided to speed up its processes to always thinner engraving. Within couple of years, we moved from 90 nm to 60, then 45 nm for arriving today at 32 nm. Each step towards a thinner engraving process requires a lot of investment (financial and engineer resources). With its well-known R&D, Intel keeps moving on while competitors are still struggling to follow. AMD is only managing 45-nm engraving process now, while on-demand founders such as TSMC and UMC are having hard time to reliably produce components at 40 nm. According to different sources, TSMC might have decided to stop moving to 32-nm engraving and immediately get start working on the next step: 28 nm. They will also redirect part of their R&D to improve the yield for production at 40 nm as this is impacting the availability of ATI and NVIDIA GPUs.

Psystar, caught between deception and megalomania
Since its last legal defeat vis-a-vis Apple the future of Psystar has become increasingly more dubious. This is even more true if the figure of 768 machines sold is real. One has to say: all this fuss for so little? In spite of these vexations, Psystar likes to see itself already as the Dell or the Apple of tomorrow. Their business plan, let us say, is optimistic. In the worst case, they envisage to sell 1,45 million machines in 2011. In the best case, they hope to run out 12 million of them… These figures are… optimistic, and more than certainly unrealistic. Early 2010 Mac Pros to have Intel Core i9 processors with 24 logical cores?
If things progress as expected, the next Mac Pro won't have any problem competing with high end iMacs for the speed crown amongst Apple machines. iPhone "3,1" moniker denotes major hardware change (PA Semi?) en route
Today we learned that new iPhones were found using apps with tracking software in the San Francisco area. The news is not surprising since the same thing has happened around this time of year for the past few years. This is the traditional time that Apple starts testing new iPhone hardware for release in summer.
What is interesting about today's information is that the new iPhone hardware is denoted as 3,1.
