Ropet is the cute-as-hell emotional robot at CES 2025 that the modern Furby wishes it could be
I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s been dethroned, but Mirumi — the clingy fluffball with a staring problem — now has some serious competition for the title of cutest robot at CES 2025. I just met Ropet, a wide-eyed companion robot with warm, soft fur, little flapping arms and big feelings. And damn is that thing adorable.
Ropet’s sole mission is to love and be loved. Think of it like a living plushie; it has a personality, will listen to your deepest darkest secrets without judgement, and will reach out to hug you when you’re sad. Its appearance is customizable and it has optional ChatGPT integration, so it’s there if you want it for advanced conversations with the robot but you’re not forced into it. Its little button nose is a camera that it uses for face and object recognition; Ropet can identify and bond more closely with its owner, but it will remember other people too. Mercedes-Benz EVs will get access to Tesla’s Supercharger network next month
As Mercedes-Benz prepares to add NACS ports to new models this year, the automaker is opening access to the Tesla Supercharger network for its existing EVs. Starting in February, authorized Mercedes dealers will offer a free software update for US-based EV owners that opens the gates to the network of over 20,000 North American Supercharger stations. In Q1 2025, dealers will sell a $185 adapter for existing models to get in on the fun.
Mercedes-Benz is the latest automaker to adopt NACS now that Tesla’s charging tech has established itself as the standard. Other manufacturers following suit include Ford, Nissan, GM, Honda, Subaru, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche… you get the drift: It’s basically everyone. To borrow a dated 20th-century metaphor, NACS has essentially become the VHS to CCS’ Betamax.

Apple makes Severance season one available to stream for free on the Roku Channel for a limited time
In a promotional push to boost interest for the upcoming second season, Apple has added all of Severance season one to the Roku Channel, for users to watch for free. The Roku Channel boasts more than 90 million users, making it one of the largest destinations of free streaming video content.
This marks the first time TV+ content has been made available on a free third-party streaming platform. The move shows just how committed Apple is to trying to expand engagement and viewership of its original content.

This mean bean machine is bound to upset coffee fans
If you know anything about coffee, and coffee snobs, you’ll know they’re always going on about where their beans are sourced from. The preference for single origin beans is better for traceability, transparency, and when you discover a variety you adore, you can keep going back. Japanese company Mihatama, however, turned up to CES 2025 in Las Vegas with Flavor Craft AI, an app-controlled system to meter out beans to suit your specific taste. You can just imagine the coffee snobs clutching their heads at the thought of blending beans in such a fashion.
Essentially, you fire up the app and select preferences based on your preferred flavor, selecting for strength, acidity, bitterness, astringency and richness. Once you’ve done so, the AI will direct the machine to churn out a blend of different beans sufficient quantities to match the flavor you’ve requested. Said beans will be collected in the bottom tray, where you can then dump them into your grinder of choice and brew up your drink.

Apple fights patent lawsuit over iPhone 15 camera tech
Apple has responded to a lawsuit over its iPhone 15 camera technology, asking a court to strike claims based on a pre-trial agreement between it and a Boston-based camera maker.Cameras on the iPhone 15 Pro MaxIn September, Apple was the target of a patent infringement lawsuit from SiOnyx, for allegedly encroaching on patents for full-color night vision imaging sensors.At the time, it was claimed that Apple had infringed on the patents, referred to as "Pixel Isolation Elements, Devices, and Associated Methods," discussing improvements to photosensitive devices. By using silicon-based photonics, the complaint said that companies could create smaller, lower-cost, and higher-performance photonic devices for imaging purposes. AMD does and doesn’t credit Apple for its powerful new Ryzan AI Max chips
You have to feel sorry for Intel at this point. Not only has Apple left its CPUs in the dust, but AMD’s new Ryzan AI Max chips claim to do the same to Intel’s flagship Core Ultra 9 288V.
The new chips take the same approach as Apple Silicon in combining CPU, GPU, and unified memory. AMD doesn’t credit Apple with the idea, but does admit the chip wouldn’t exist without the Cupertino company …

Faraday Future pitches a ‘fresh start’ with a minivan prototype at CES 2025
At CES 2017, Faraday Future introduced its futuristic luxury EV, the FF 91. Seven years later, following repeated delays, bankruptcy, lawsuits and other controversies, the company has sold “15 or 16” FF 91s. Now the company is detailing its latest strategy shift, with a plan to sell cheap EVs under its newly announced low-cost “FX” brand. FX CEO Max Ma came to CES, along with two prototype vehicles, to pitch the plan that he described as a “fresh start” for the embattled company.
As you might expect with Faraday, the exact details are somewhat hazy, but it involves sourcing parts from Chinese car-makers and bringing them to the US to produce “mass volume mainstream vehicles” with some of the premium touches Faraday is known for. “We want to take that $300,000-car expertise from a technology and features and performance [standpoint] into a $30,000, $40,000 car to try to upgrade the overall user experience,” Ma said during a briefing with Engadget.
