Apple starts in-store iPhone 5 display replacements for $149
Apple is now offering the option to have an iPhone 5 display replaced at an Apple Store for $149, says MacRumors. The service costs the same with or without AppleCare+. It may be most important for people without the plan, though, who otherwise have to pay $229 to have a non-defective iPhone replaced. With AppleCare+ active, a replacement is $49.

April showers apparently brought May iPad Bluetooth keyboards, as I reviewed a ton of them during the month. The month of June is starting off with a duo of iPad mini keyboards from ZAGG, the ZAGGkeys Cover and ZAGGkeys Folio (both priced at US$99.99). Briefly: Vudu out of beta, on OS X; Cross DJ adds Soundcloud sharing
Vudu's previously PC-only movie conversion program has exited beta, and is now available on OS X. The conversion of a first disc, either Blu-Ray or standard DVD is free, with a $2 per title fee assessed on future disks. SD DVDs may be "upgraded" to HDX for a one-time fee of $5. Users who convert more than 10 movies receive a 50 percent discount through August 31. Titles "converted" are available on the UltraViolet streaming service on various set top boxes, smart TVs, and mobile devices.

Moment: Making it easier to post to Facebook
Facebook may be one of the world's most popular social sharing services, but that doesn't mean that it's easy to figure out how to upload text and images, especially when you're in the web app on your Mac browser. New image depicts alleged iOS 7 alpha homescreen
A photo tweeted by 9to5Mac may show the homescreen in an alpha version of iOS 7. Layout mostly resembles iOS 6; one difference, though, is that icons have a "flat" appearance. iOS 7 has changed dramatically since the photo was taken, the source of the image says.

ARAIG gaming feeback suit hits Kickstarter in search of good funding vibrations
In spite of the company's claims that feedback has always been localized on gaming controllers, this certainly isn't the first time we've seen the phenomenon incorporated into a wearable. Justice Department Presents Opening Arguments Against Apple in E-Book Price Fixing Trial
In a Manhattan courtroom this morning, the U.S. Department of Justice presented its opening arguments in USA v Apple Inc, the antitrust e-book price fixing trial. The DoJ filed suit last April and Apple has consistently defended itself and has said the accusations are "simply not true". News: Apple replacing iPhone 5 displays in-store for $149
Apple has started to replace iPhone 5 screens at its retail stores, according to a new report. A new display replacement costs $149, enabling users to avoid replacing the entire iPhone, and AppleCare+ isn’t necessary to use the service. A prior report noted that display repairs would be ready in-house by June. The same report said Apple stores should be able to repair cameras, sleep/wake buttons, and logic boards by July. Shortcat: Spotlight for your screen
It comes as little surprise that OS X supports many flavors of user interaction, nor that certain users gravitate towards certain input styles.
For example, there are trackpad wizards who beckon with careful gestures and there are mouse users who prefer to point with their cursor. And then there are keyboard fiends, those like myself, who live and die by our home position.

Zynga to shutter New York and LA studios, cut 18% of workforce
Social game monolith Zynga plans to shutter its New York City, Dalles and Los Angeles game development studios. Sources at Zynga confirmed the closures to Engadget, and also confirmed reports of layoffs affecting 520 employees (around 18 percent of the company's total workforce), and now CEO Mark Pincus published his internal letter to employees on the company's website. Apparently the ousted employees will receive, "generous severance packages" for their time; we've published the full letter below the break.
It's unknown how this will impact games and services from those offices, but it is said to cut $80 m

As part of a shift to lower repair costs, Apple has begun replacing iPhone 5 screens at its retail locations. The new display replacement service is priced at $149 and can be purchased with or without AppleCare+. SONTE: App-controlled digital shades for your windows
There's a new and completely unique Kickstarter campaign that started this morning, and it hopes to make it possible for you to control a window's opaqueness from an app. SONTE Film is a self-installed "digital shade" that is applied to windows and can made opaque -- or clear again -- with a tap on an app button.
The link between your iPhone and SONTE is a Wi-Fi enabled transformer and a thin cord that connects to the window film. Sell-outs, leaked SKUs point to updated MacBooks at WWDC
Two new reports may suggest that Apple is planning to update MacBooks at WWDC, which begins June 10th. 9to5Mac says it has been given product SKUs for four new MacBook models, which appear to represent high- and low-end configurations of two different sizes of the same notebook. It's unclear whether that means the MacBook Air or the Retina MacBook Pro, both of which have similar tiers.

Briefly: 16GB iPod touch teardown, Chrome and Drive for iOS updated
Following last week's release of a stripped-down iPod touch, iFixit has posted a complete teardown that shows the internal modifications. The 16GB iPod touch lacks the internal post that is used for the Loop on the 32GB and 64GB variants, however features the same curved speaker that was designed to avoid the post in the first place. With the exception of the flash memory, it appears that the other components on the logic board are identical to those found in the 32GB and 64GB models. iFixit also notes that Apple has moved the microphone from the back of the device to the top.

France orders Apple to pay $6.5M in taxes
Apple has been ordered to pay US$6.5 million (5 million euros) in taxes in France by SACEM (Google translation), a French organization which doles out the 'copie privée' tax to writers, artists, producers, musicians, and other content creators. The 'copie privée' is a tax in some European countries on digital devices that can display, copy, or transfer copyrighted content.

Image of 'Flat' Redesign From Early iOS 7 Build Reportedly Leaks
It's been reported for several months that Jony Ive is overseeing a redesign of the user interface in iOS 7, removing signs of skeuomorphism and gloss in favor of a 'flat design'. iDownloadBlog has posted what may be the new home screen in iOS 7. iFixit opens up the new 16 GB iPod touch
Apple last week unceremoniously introduced a new, lower-cost iPod Touch model. Priced at US$229, the new iPod Touch comes without a rear facing camera or the recently-introduced wrist loop. Aside from that, the model is essentially the same as current 5th generation iPod Touch models.

Here's a question I'm sure none of you have been wondering about. What would happen if we took the screen off of every iPhone ever sold and stitched them together to form one ginormous screen? France's SACEM agency is asking Apple to pay 5 million euros, or about $6.5 million, for taxes still owed on 2011 iPad sales, reports say. Modified iPhone charger installs malware
iOS may be susceptible to hacking via a malicious charger says a Black Hat briefing by Billy Lau, Yeongjin Jang and Chengyu Song. This approach uses a charger that looks like a standard charger, but has malicious software on it. When an iOS device is plugged into the charger, an attacker can bypass iOS defense mechanisms and compromise a device within one minute of it being plugged in. The team built a prototype charger using a BeagleBoard and was able to demonstrate how easy it is to build a malicious charger, even on a limited budget. This attack affected any current-generation Apple device running the latest version of iOS and did not require the targeted device to be jailbroken.

Apple revamps AppleCare technician certifications program
Apple has revamped its AppleCare technician certification program. Officially called the Service Training and Certification program, it exists to train technicians in diagnosis and repair of Apple products. Until now technicians needed to renew their certification each year and take their exams at a certified examination center.
As of June 23 however, technicians will no longer need to be recertified each year and all exams will be done online. The changes come as a result of feedback from technicians.

Apple signing deals, may introduce Internet radio service as soon as next week
According to an article in yesterday's New York Times, Apple is trying hard to ink licensing deals with music companies so it can introduce a streaming Internet radio service as soon as next Monday -- the day of the WWDC 2013 keynote.
Apparently Apple hasn't made much progress since rumors about the service first surfaced last summer, as record labels and music publishers aren't happy with the deals they currently have with Pandora and want higher royalty rates and guaranteed minimum payments as well.

Apple heads to trial in e-book price fixing case
Apple is today headed to trial to defend itself in the antitrust case brought against it by the US Justice Department over e-book pricing, Bloomberg notes. The company is accused of conspiring with major publishers -- Macmillan, Simon & Schuster, Hachette, Pearson, and HarperCollins -- to artificially inflate the prices of e-books over the $10 threshold that was once standard at Amazon. The publishers were also involved in the case at one point, but each decided to settle before matters went to trial.

Die New York Times berichtet unter Berufung auf nicht genannte Quellen, dass Apple momentan alles daran setzte, um das erwartete Internet-Radio an der WWDC 2013 offiziell vorstellen zu können. Over the weekend, Apple signed a new deal with Warner Music Group for recorded music and music publishing rights, say sources for the New York Times. Photos of 'Plastic Low-Cost iPhone' Likely an iPhone 5 in a Case
Yesterday, Apple.pro shared a pair of photos that had appeared on Chinese microblogging site Sina Weibo, purportedly showing the rear of Apple's rumored plastic low-cost iPhone with a Lightning cable plugged into the bottom. The two pictures show a glossy curved shell and have been picked up by numerous sites today. Our first thought upon seeing the photos was that it is likely simply an iPhone 5 in a plastic case. A lack of an Apple logo or discernible text on the back of the device is unlike many Apple prototypes, and the Lightning cable looked to us to be plugging into a recessed case rather than a flush port on a device.

Dazu kommen ein Tegra 4-CPU und 2GB RAM. Weitere Specs: 32GB Speicher, 5MP-Kamera, USB 3.0, SD-Karte und HDMI-Out. Der letztere soll sogar in der Lage sein 4K-Videos auszuspucken. The Apple e-book price-fixing trial is set to begin today in New York, according to Reuters. The trial begins 14 months after the US Department of Justice accused Apple and five other book publishers of fixing the cost of e-books. In April 2012 the DOJ accused Apple, Penguin, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, the Hachette Book Group, and MacMillan of conspiring to fix the prices of e-books in order to break the stranglehold Amazon had on the market.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo von KGI Securities hat in einer neuen Analyse seine Erwartungen für die kommende WWDC 2013 dargelegt. Er geht davon aus, dass Apple anlässlich der diesjährigen Entwicklerkonferenz nicht nur ein überarbeitetes iOS und OS X vorstellen wird, sondern auch eine überarbeitete Version des MacBook Air und des MacBook Pro mit Retina-Display.

Apples eigener Musikstreamdienst könnte zur WWDC vorgestellt werden

Laut der New York Times arbeitet Apple mit Hochdruck an dem Launch ihres eigenen Musikstreamingservice. Das unter Fachkreisen so genannte iRadio soll Diensten wie Spotify und Pandora Konkurrenz machen. Cupertino verhandelt dafür mit den Majors und mit Universal und Warner sollen bereits Deals unterschrieben worden sein. Mit Sony stünde man noch in Verhandlung. Es wird vermutet, dass der Service kostenfrei und werbefinanziert sein soll. Man könnte mit so einem Ansatz durch aber auch den Umsatz im hauseigenen iTunes Store ankurbeln. Das Kleinere der beiden hat ein TFT-Display mit 1.280 x 800 Pixeln (WXGA, 189ppi), 5MP-Kamera hinten, 1,3 MP-Kamera vorne, 1,5 GHz Dual-Core-CPU, 1,5 GB RAM und 16/32GB Speicher. microSDs werden bis zu 64GB unterstützt. Des weiteren gibt es Android 4.2, 4.450mAh-Batterie und WiFi, 3G und LTE.

Gerücht: Kommt iOS 7 mit AirDrop?
Je näher der mutmassliche Veröffentlichungstermin für iOS 7 rückt, desto konkreter werden die Gerüchte rund um das neue mobile Betriebssystem von Apple. Insidern zufolge testet Apple in einer internen Testversion von iOS 7 die OS-X-Funktion «AirDrop» auch für iOS-Geräte. Mit «AirDrop» wäre es möglich, Dokumente und andere Dateien direkt zwischen zwei iOS-Geräten zu teilen. Möglicherweise könnte man die Daten auch direkt mit einem Mac, welcher mit AirDrop kompatibel ist, austauschen. Zum Teilen der Daten wäre dabei keine aktive Internet-Verbindung nötig, weil zum Austausch der Dateien lediglich zwei Geräte, welche AirDrop unterstützen, vorhanden sein müssen.
Aktuell können Dokumente und Fotos lediglich mit iCloud, Mail oder Drittanbieter Lösungen mit anderen Geräten ausgetauscht werden. AirDrop würde es erleichtern, einzelne Daten anderen Personen freizugeben.

Asus zeigt auf der Computex in Taiwan zahlreiche Neuheiten, auch die, die bereits - stolz wie Oskar - angeteast wurden: Hallo, Zenbook Infinity. Das Ultrabook kommt mit einer aus Gorilla Glass 3 gefertigten Oberseite. Ein world's first im Laptop-Bereich, das Glas soll darüber hinaus drei Mal unempfindlicher gegenüber Kratzern sein, als der Vorgänger. Das Display ist als Touchscreen ausgelegt, zwei USB 3.0 Ports sind an Bord, ein Mini Display Port und HDMI ebenfalls. Bei den weiteren Spezifikationen hält sich Asus bislang noch zurück. Das ist nicht weiter wild: Mit dem Marktstart wird erst im 4. Quartal gerechnet.

Russland fordert auch Fluggastdaten

ASUS reveals FonePad Note: 6-inch 1080p display, dual-core 1.6GHZ CPU, 2GB RAM
At its Computex 2013 showcase event, ASUS has introduced the new FonePad Note, an Android tablet that you can also make calls on using its 3G radio. On the front of the device is a six-inch, 1080p Super IPS+ display, a 1.2-megapixel camera and front-facing stereo speakers (think: HTC One). The main shooter packs an 8-megapixel sensor, and inside the tablet-come-phone is a dual-core 1.6GHz processor (Atom Z2560) paired with 2GB of RAM. The 3G antenna supports DC-HSPA+ speeds, so in theory it should handle download speeds of up to 42Mbps. No pricing or availability details have been announced.

If you thought ASUS was done announcing new products here at Computex, get ready for at least one more surprise. The company just unveiled the Transformer Book Trio, a so-called three-in-one device that combines bits of the laptop, desktop and tablet experience. At first glance, it sounds similar in concept to the Aspire R7 desktop-laptop-tablet that recently came out, but in fact, ASUS has taken a different tack altogether. iOS 7 May Include AirDrop Wireless File Sharing Capabilities
According to 9to5Mac, Apple is internally testing versions of iOS 7 that include AirDrop drag-and-drop file sharing capabilities. First introduced with OS X Lion, AirDrop is a Finder function that allows Mac users to share files with other Mac users without the need for a Wi-Fi network or storage device. AirDrop for iOS is said to work in the same way, allowing files to be quickly shared between two different users. Acer announces the Liquid S1: a 5.7-inch smartphone with a near-stock Android experience (hands-on)
Acer keeps the product announcements coming here at Computex, adding a new (and big) Android phone to its new Ultrabooks and Windows tablets.
