Pulp und Wallet: Facebook übernimmt Acrylic

Qantas to offer passengers iPads for in-flight entertainment
Qantas will be giving customers iPads to use for in-flight entertainment, following successful tests late last year. The Apple tablets will be rolled out to the entire Qantas 767 fleet, from the fourth quarter of this year onwards, starting with flights based on Australia's east-coast routes. Adding iPads to all 23 Boeing 767-300 craft would require at least 5,000 units, excluding spare tablets for repairs.

Samsung pre-trial term definition backfires; favors Apple
Electronics manufacture Samsung has been dealt another setback in the work-up before its trial with Apple. Samsung requested a tight clarification on the term "electronic document" and the resulting definition construction ended up using several terms verbatim from Apple's "rubber banding" patent, potentially solidifying Apple's claims against Samsung.

Mac, iOS developer Acrylic joins Facebook design team
Sparrow isn't the only big Mac developer that's switched to a high profile project today. Mac and iOS shop Acrylic has been called away from its own projects, including the apps Pulp and Wallet, by Facebook. The company doesn't say exactly what they'll be working on, but presumably it'll be the Mac and iOS interfaces for the popular social network (which, let's be honest, can use all the help they can get). Acrylic's Dustin MacDonald says the matchup "was a natural fit."

Acer Aspire S5 review: is this innovative Ultrabook worth $1,400?
With dozens and dozens of Ultrabooks on parade, you'd be forgiven if one skinny laptop with an ultra-low voltage processor started to look like the next. Digg to get a complete redesign, relaunch in August
Well, that was fast. Not two weeks after Digg was bought out by Betaworks (parent company to Bit.ly, among other startups), we're learning the crowd-sourced news aggregator is poised to relaunch as soon as August 1. In a blog post, the 10-person engineering team promises an overhaul of the service, once a litmus test for what was popular on the internet. New iPad quietly debuts in China
In contrast to the chaos that has surrounded the release of new Apple devices in China in the past, the third-generation iPad was launched in China today in a very orderly manner. Many credited the serene launch to a new reservation system used by Chinese Apple Stores.
Apple allows customers to reserve an iPad through the Apple online store between 9 AM and 12 PM. They are then assigned a time to pick up their iPad the following day. This has reduced the amount of foot traffic around the six official Apple Stores on the Chine

Nintendo's Iwata says being first in next-gen race is 'not important at all,' pricing is
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata recently talked about how the Wii U's second screen was nearly scrapped due to cost concerns, so it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise to once again hear him talk about the importance of pricing. Apple pulls Bitdefender's privacy app Clueful
Apple has pulled an app named Clueful from the App Store, though it hasn't been completely forthcoming yet as to why the app was pulled. Clueful is an app from a company called Bitdefender that's designed to let iPhone users monitor what their other apps are doing or sharing in terms of usage. One of Bitdefender's reps does say that "most app developers use [Clueful's] information for legitimate purposes, others might not," so it's possible that the app allowed for some less-than-secure activity on the part of app developers or users. 20th Century Fox movies now available via iTunes in the cloud
20th Century Fox Studios has made its movies available through iTunes in the Cloud, which allows customers to download purchases to a compatible OS X or iOS device. The deal with Fox comes just as Apple has added the service to 37 countries including Brazil, Hong Kong and Mexico.
When iTunes movies in the cloud launched in March, Fox and Universal had a conflicting deal with HBO. Universal came on board in April, and now 20th Century Fox Studios is the last of the "Big Five" to join.
Additionally, Fox movies you bought previously or digital copy codes acquired from Blu-ray discs will now appear in the purchased section of

Samsung set to reveal next US Galaxy device on August 15th
We just received a "save the date" email from a US Samsung Mobile representative that revealed a new Galaxy device is on its way on August 15th. We don't have any details on what this could be, but it may be the Galaxy S Blaze Q, since internal employee docs pin the phone's release on same exact day. With that being a T-Mobile exclusive for now, we're unsure that it'll be the recipient of so much pomp and circumstance. There's also a possibility that we'll see the Note 10.1, which we got our hands on so many months ago. Gotta love the guessing games that leave us in suspense and keep us on our toes, right?

Facebook buys Pulp developer Acrylic Software
Acrylic Software has been bought out by Facebook, says the company's founder, Dustin MacDonald. In a blog post, he explains that in the next few weeks, the company will be moving from Vancouver to San Francisco to become a part of the Facebook design team. The company' current products, Pulp and Wallet, will remain on sale but are not expected to get any future updates.

Samsung denied a second time, Galaxy Tab ban stands

Portland Design Commission gives OK to Apple Store design
This news of a forthcoming Apple Store in Portland, Oregon comes from The Oregonian newspaper rather than Kelly's House of Crackpot Theories (TUAW blogger and podcaster Kelly Guimont is a resident of The City of Roses). Most terms of the deal haven't been announced, but Sparrow does say it will be folded into the Gmail team to "accomplish a bigger vision" which it can allegedly "better achieve with Google." Ask iLounge: Video Conversion for playing from iPod classic to TV
Q: I have read several articles and can’t find the answer to my question which is probably quite simple for someone a bit more knowledgeable then myself. I use Handbrake to convert video files, usually xvid, to put onto my iPod classic, which I then hook up to my 42” HDTV via the Apple AV cables. I have no idea which settings I should use for this—any advice? Or is this a stupid way to do this and I should be using a different method…

BlackBerry 10 gets voice commands in latest dev update (video)

Latest MacBook Pro & Air models get software update
Apple has released a software update for the new MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models introduced in June of 2012. The update, which is 76.64 MB in size, "fixes an issue that can lead to increased CPU power consumption, and it improves compatibility with some USB devices."
According to a tweet from veteran Mac backup utility developer Dave Nanian of Shirt Pocket, "There's no question-the new MacBook Pro Retina update improves thermal performance and battery. I *think* it's using integrated video more."

iPhone 3GS now on India's Aircel for under $200
Indian carrier Aircel is now selling the iPhone 3GS for less than $200, according to an official announcement. The device is now selling for about Rs. 9,999, or roughly $181. Buyers must also, however, pay for a year of unlimited data at a rate of Rs. 3,000, the equivalent of just under $55. The 3GS has been available in India for a long time, but typically at much higher prices.

Sparrow acquired by Google, team to work on "new projects"
One of the nicest mail clients on any platform, Sparrow, was just acquired by Google. There's a note on Sparrow's homepage by CEO Dom Leca, which says it all. This is a great move by Google if they allow the team which built Sparrow to focus on making intuitive tools. MacStories got a statement from Google, saying, in part, "[The Sparrow team] will be working on new projects."
For now, Sparrow will remain available but won't be getting any new features. Congratulations and good luck to the Sparrow team -- we can't wait to see what you make next.

Well, we can't exactly say we saw this one coming. Sparrow, maker of popular email apps for iOS and Mac OS X, has just announced that it's been acquired by Google. Expectedly, details on the acquisition are remaining under wraps at the moment, but company CEO Dom Leca has confirmed in a blog post that Sparrow will be joining the Gmail team at Google "to accomplish a bigger vision." Examining iPhone pricing and US market share
Analyst Benedict Evans tries to explain why the iPhone accounts for about half of US smartphone sales, but is outold 2:1 by Android globally. He argues that it all comes down to plan pricing and phone subsidy.
In the US, consumers save US$100-$200 on the cost of the phone, but the plan pricing is the same. As a result, US consumers only save 10 percent by going with a less expensive Android device. Overseas, however, plan pricing is much more flexible. Customers can buy a cheap phone and a less expensive plan to match. As a result, the iPhone can be as much as 160 percent more expensive than its cheaper Android counterpart.

The GoSmart Stylus, a new stylus for touchscreen devices with a clear tip, has been released by GoSmart. The aluminum stylus features a teflon coated stainless steel tip that will work with any capacitive touchscreen, including those that are covered with a protective layer. GoSmart is offering the stylus in two models, the 300 and 200 series, both which include magnets for attacking the stylus directly to newer iPads. New iPad owners increasingly interested in business use
A recent research report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) suggests more people are buying the iPad to use at work, according to AllThingsD which had access to the report. A survey of 1000 customers who purchased iPads between December 2011 and April 2012 shows that 21 percent will use the device for business purposes. This is an 8 percent jump from the previous survey.

Apple is not planning to simply give in to a UK judge's orders that it should acknowledge on its website that Samsung didn't copy the iPad. Apple plans to appeal the decision, and the motion will be heard in a UK court of appeals.
The judge who had issued the ruling in the first place (and said that Galaxy Tab wasn't as "cool" as the iPad) allowed the appeal to be filed.

Judge to bar Jobs's disparaging statements about Android
No matter what Steve Jobs has said about Android, it shouldn't influence the upcoming patent showdown between Apple and Samsung in U.S. courts, a judge ruled on July 18.
District Judge Lucy Koh ruled in favor of Apple regarding this request, Reuters reports. Samsung wanted the use of Jobs' quotes approved, saying it proved Apple's bias. Apple wanted them thrown out, claiming they would be a distraction. Koh agreed with Apple on this.
"I really don't think this is a trial about Steve Jobs," Koh said.

LG has introduced its new IPS2 Series of monitors that are highlighted by a near invisible bezel at just 1.2mm (.025-inch) thin. The new monitors use IPS technology for wide viewing angles and more consistent color representation. Nokia: Ideen für Touchscreen-Smartphone und -Tablet schon Ende der 1990er
Nokia, einst mit Abstand Marktführer auf dem Handy- und auch dem Smartphone-Weltmarkt, hat den Anschluss an Apple und die Hersteller von Android-Smartphones verloren. Dabei hätte die Geschichte ganz anders laufen können: Schon Ende der 1990er hatten die Finnen Produkte entwickelt, die dem iPhone und sogar dem iPad ähneln.
Das Wall Street Journal widmet einen ausführlichen Artikel der aktuellen Krise des Unternehmens. Chromium Browser Beta für Raspberry Pi ist da

ChromiumOS-Entwickler Hexxeh ist großer Fan des Raspberry Pi und hat jetzt auch eine erste Beta des Chromium Browsers fertig, die auf Raspbian Images läuft. Das ist zwar noch nicht das volle ChromiumOS (was aber auch bereits in der Entwicklung ist), dürfte aber das Surfen auf dem Raspberry Pi deutlich angenehmer machen. Ist das die langerwartete spiegellose Systemkamera von Canon? Das auf der japanischen Webseite digicam-info aufgetauchte Bild zeigt eine Kamera, auf deren Oberseite man bei genauerem Hinsehen den Namen "EOS M" entdeckt. Canonwatch weist zudem auf das Objektiv hin: ein EF-M 22mm f/2 STM Pancake, dessen neuer Anschluss die Bezeichnung EF-M trägt. Die Webseite wurde zudem per Email informiert, dass im Innern der Kamera nicht der Sensor der PowerShot G1 X, sondern ein APS-C-Sensor stecken soll, bezeichnet das aber selbst als Gerücht. Genaueres werden wir wohl am 23. Juli erfahren, denn dann soll die offizielle Ankündigung stattfinden.

SuperMUC: Schnellster Rechner Europas ging heute in München in Betrieb (Videos)

Der viertschnellste Rechner der Welt und der schnellste Rechner Europas ging heute offiziell in Betrieb. Der Supercomputer mit dem Namen "SuperMUC", der im Leibniz-Rechenzentrum in München steht, wurde von IBM geliefert. Er arbeitet mit 155.000 Rechenkernen und leistet etwas mehr als drei Petaflops, was drei Billiarden Rechenoperationen pro Sekunde sind. Dabei stehen den Rechenkernen mehr als 330 Terabyte Hauptspeicher zu Verfügung. Apple hat gerade 32 Länder an iTunes Cloud für Filme angeschlossen, bislang war das Feature nur in den USA verfügbar. Allerdings sind nur wenige europäische Länder dabei, UK und Tschechien und die Slovakei. In Deutschland werden wir wohl noch eine Weile auf den Service warten müssen, denn vermutlich gestalten sich die Verhandlungen etwas schwieriger, Japan ist einer der anderen großen Märkte auf denen es wohl auch noch eine Weile dauert.

Hemisphere Games has released a big update to the great indie game Osmos that adds in a new multiplayer mode. You can face off against a friend on another device and enter an arena where both players need to consume variously sized orbs around them, each one vying to become bigger than the other and consume the opponent. There are six different arenas to play in, which each add a different set of elements to the gameplay. It's not a huge update, but if you and your friends really love Osmos, it seems like a fun way to face off.

China hasn't had the best of luck with new iDevice launches. The devices are so popular in that part of the world, and the black market over there is so hungry for goods, that Apple often has issues with legitimate customers trying to get devices, and even sometimes have fights or vandalism break out when the items go on sale. Die Gesamteinnahmen steigerten sich um 700 Millionen und der Verlust ergibt sich aus einer einmaligen Abschreibung von 6,2 Milliarden für aQuantive, damals, 2007, die größte Übernahme für Microsoft überhaupt, die den Verlust von Doubleclick an Google damit auffangen wollten. Xperia GX goes through federal inspection, is still the Sony phone we want
Sony's forthcoming 4.6-inch Android ICS slab has appeared at the FCC, and has revealed a few more details on what appears to be the company's next flagship smartphone. The highlight of the federal-sanctioned autopsy of the Xperia GX reveals an interesting point; a pentaband 3G radios capable of HSPA speeds, something that's still a rarity among global smartphones. Crowd-sourced art projects? You knew Google would get there sooner rather than later. And with the cooperative backing of the UK's Tate Modern gallery, artists Chris Milk and Aaron Koblin have been able to do just that, taking the surrealist concept of "the exquisite corpse" -- an evolving word tree exercise devised by early 20th century surrealists - and transmuting it into The Exquisite Forest, an animation-based collaboration that lives on the web. History Here app is perfect for summer travel
History Here for iPhone is a clever take on travel discovery apps. The app comes from The History Channel and A&E Networks.
In a nutshell, the app knows where you are and what historical sites are near you. It could be a National Park, a Civil War Battlefield, a museum, a Western fort or more.

Motorola attempts trial procedural advantage over Microsoft
Late Wednesday, Motorola Mobility filed a motion with the Western District of Washington court for a summary judgement hoping to limit the scope of the trial. Motorola Mobility and its parent, Google, propose that one issue be evaluated at trialówhether Motorola Mobility violated fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) licensing terms by demanding its standard 2.25 percent royalty. TSMC vermeldet Umsatzsteigerung von knapp 16 Prozent

Acorn 3.3 adds Retina Canvas, Smart Export, more
Version 3.3 of the popular Mac image editor Acorn is out, and developer Gus Mueller writes up the biggest changes on his blog. The Retina Canvas is likely the coolest update: If you're using Acorn, you can now see any art you create at a 1:1 ratio on a Retina Display. So if you have a MacBook Pro with Retina Display and Acorn, you can now see your own work perfectly clearly. All of the other elements have been updated for the new display as well.
