Apple gibt Java-Updates für Snow Leopard und Lion frei
Apple hat am heutigen Abend noch weitere Updates freigegeben. Es handelt sich um Java-Aktualisierungen für Snow Leopard und Lion, die Bezeichnungen lauten "Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 9" und "Java for OS X Lion 2012-004". Apple removes 'new' tag from Mac Pro's online store listing
In an unusual move, Apple has removed the "new" tag from the Mac Pro's listing at the online Apple store. The graphic appeared yesterday when the company released minor updates to the Pro lineup. Typically Apple leaves the graphic up for weeks or even months after a product's introduction.

Mozilla Marketplace is live, lets you run web apps like desktop programs

Report: Google, Facebook biggest web trackers
Google and Facebook are watching Internet users' movements across the web more than any other companies, according to a new analysis out from the makers of the Ghostery browser-privacy plug-in. The study used traffic data from more than a million users. It found that all of the top five trackers on the Internet were either Google- or Facebook-affiliated, with Twitter also making the top ten.

HTC to complete S3 acquisition for 270-patent portfolio
HTC has confirmed it wishes to complete the purchase of S3 Graphics, in an effort to boost its patent portfolio. After mulling the buyout last year, HTC has publicly confirmed that it sees the graphics chipset designer's 270-patent portfolio as an asset. Speaking at the annual shareholders' general meeting, HTC general counsel Grace Lei labeled the S3 portfolio as "valid and strong" following the "cautious assessment."

MacTech magazine launches on iPad, 2012 e-issues free for WWDC
Our comrades in geek over at MacTech have some WWDC-related deals to share. The iPad edition of the Mac-centric technical journal was released last month, and the free app shows up in the iPad's Newsstand container (as with most periodicals). The in-app issue purchases run you $4.99 for one, or $10.99 for a three-issue subscription. The annual print/digital bundle is a better deal, with a full year's subscription to both versions running you $29.99.
Given the festivities in San Francisco, however, the MacTech team has made the year-to-date issues of the magazine free to download.

HyCycle electric bike hands-on (video)
The HyCycle isn't the kind of thing you'd want to have to take through airport security -- at least not in its present state. The electricity-generating electric bike prototype is bit of a mess of wires and blinking boards at the moment, plus a battery that looks an awful lot like a block of C4. All are attached to one of its creators' rust-colored Schwinn road bike. Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2 causing serious issues
Some people are experiencing serious errors with Thunderbolt Software Update 1.2, released yesterday, according to reports. Affected users will see any number of issues when booting a Mac, ranging from "unexpected error" messages to kernel panics or becoming stuck at the gray boot screen. Xbox 360 spring update rolling out to some now, everyone else next week
It doesn't bring quite the overhaul that previous updates have, but at least some Xbox 360 users should be seeing a new software update available the next time they turn on their console. Xbox's Major Nelson confirmed on Twitter today that the spring update is rolling out to "a few" users this week, with everyone else set to receive it next week. As for details on the update, he's only gone as far as to confirm that it contains "behind the scenes improvements & prep for future enhancements." Presumably, those future enhancements include many of the new features we saw at E3 last week, but there's still no official word as to when they'll actually roll out.

At yesterday's keynote to the 2012 WWDC conference, Apple made a number of simultaneous moves in its global chess game with partners and rivals. Let's try and unpack what we can of Apple's overall strategy by analyzing the tactical choices it has made.

Apple posts iMovie, Retina MacBook Pro trackpad updates
Continuing off a batch from yesterday, Apple has posted two more software updates. The most important of these is MacBook Pro (Retina) Trackpad Update 1.0, which copes with a launch-day glitch. Affected MacBooks will have problems with their trackpad not "consistently" responding to input, Apple writes. The file is only a 1.26MB download, but requires that a system be plugged in during the update process.

Verizon Wireless announces Share Everything family plans
With no hyperbole at all, Verizon Wireless has announced "Share Everything Plans that will forever change the way customers purchase wireless services." The new plans create a bucket of unlimited voice, text, video and picture messaging, and a data allowance that can be used on up to ten devices on the Verizon network.
The plans, which begin on June 28, 2012 and are available to new and existing customers, also include the Mobile Hotspot service on all of the devices. The plan has two steps. Initiator des Projekts ist die US Air Force, die gerne ein Hauswandhochlaufen-Gadget für ihre Spezialeinheiten hätte, weshalb ein entsprechender Wettbewerb ins Leben gerufen wurde, bei dem das Team "Ascending Aggies" aus Utah als einziges eine funktionierende Lösung vorweisen konnte. Verizon shared plans to connect 10 devices, cap data at 10GB
Verizon Wireless has detailed its forthcoming shared plans that were alluded to in recent comments. The Share Everything plan will enable up to 10 Verizon devices to share unlimited voice minutes and SMS/MMS messages, with a single data allowance between all handsets. Apple pulls links to Messages beta for OS X Lion
Apple has removed virtually all links and references to the Messages for Mac beta from its website, reports note. One link is still present at the bottom of Apple's Downloads page, but even this redirects to Apple's generic OS X page. TomTom, Apple sign global agreement for map data in iOS 6
During its WWDC keynote, Apple unveiled a new mapping solution for iOS 6 that'll replace the Google-backed Maps app. This new app includes stunning 3D flyover maps and turn-by-turn navigation (a key feature of Google's mapping solution on Android that was not available in iOS's Maps app).

HTC can't use Google patents to challenge Apple
Last year, HTC obtained eight patents from Google and used them in its legal fight with Apple. Now, an ITC judge has thrown out five of the patents saying that "HTC failed to acquire all substantial rights in the relevant patents," says a report by FOSS Patents.
Administrative Law Judge Thomas Pender made the decision last Friday and it was made public on Monday. HTC can appeal the decision, but it likely won't win an appeal unless Google joins as an additional complainant. It's a setback for HTC in its legal battle with Apple and an embarrassment to Google, which transferred the patents not only late in the game, but improperly as well.

Two Maps-related features in iOS 6 will require at least an iPhone 4S or an iPad 2 to function, despite requirements for the rest of the OS, Apple has quietly revealed. A check of the official Maps page shows the fact mentioned only in a footnote. Did you notice something a bit different yesterday at the WWDC keynote? Nick Bilton of the New York Times did -- the focus of chatter during and after the keynote was all about the products, not about the present or past CEO.

NASA opens up Launch Control Center for public tours

Apple updates iMovie for Retina display MacBook Pro

MacBook Pro with Retina display shipping slips to 2-3 weeks
If you waited until today to place your order for a new MacBook Pro with Retina display on the online Apple Store, you're not going to see that sweet piece of precious metal for a while. CNET's Don Reisinger reports that the newest MacBook Pro -- which started shipping yesterday -- is now showing a two to three week ship date.

In der vergangenen Nacht hat Apple eine Reihe von Software-Updates veröffentlicht. Neben Fehlerbehebungen hat das Unternehmen kleine neue Funktionen in seine Programme integriert.

iPad prevents seafood restaurant from overcharging
Thanks to the iPad, travelers in Sanya, a seaside resort town in Southern China, won't have to worry about paying too much for their seafood, says a report in China Daily. After an increasing number of complaints about excessive charges at local restaurants, government officials tried to curb the pricing practices by requiring restaurants with more than 15 tables to use the iPad to process food orders.
Orders are processed by custom software on the iPad and sent to the kitchen via WiFi. Pricing will be determined by the government and restaurants will not be allowed to raise prices. Dell Vostro line gets Ivy Bridge CPUs, optional 4G LTE
Dell's Vostro line of entry-level business notebooks is next up to receive the good 'ol Ivy Bridge update. Today the company is announcing the Vostro 3360, 3460 and 3560 laptops, in 13-inch, 14-inch and 15-inch sizes, respectively. The iCade Mobile puts console-style buttons on your iPhone or iPod touch
We first heard about the iCade Mobile back when the unit was introduced at CES this year, and as mentioned last week, it's now out and available. I've been playing with one for a couple of weeks now, and I can tell you that it's an impressive device. The unit is sturdy, the buttons work great, and the whole device does a terrific job of turning your smaller iOS devices into something like a Sony PSP-style handheld console.

Nike+ Basketball and Training slamdunk the FCC, jog one step closer towards availability
It was back in the cold, cruel darkness of February -- when physical exertion was far from our mind -- that we learned about Nike+'s Basketball and Training experiences. Now, in the warm glow of early summer, here they are, limbering up at the FCC. Following the news that Apple and Facebook are cosying up together, the social network has decided to tweak its own iOS camera app to avoid any mix-ups. HTC kann Google-Patente nicht gegen Apple nutzen
Die USITC (US International Trade Commission) hat im Patentstreit zwischen Apple und HTC entschieden, dass der taiwanische Hersteller in seinen Gegenklagen nicht berechtigt ist, die von Google übertragenen Patente zu nutzen, weil dabei nicht alle Rechte übertragen wurden. Der Trend bei Druckern geht zur walzenförmigen Schreibtischskulptur, jedenfalls in den Designerköpfen: nach dem Circle Printer kommt der Inside-out Printer, dessen Designer Han S. Apple updates iPhoto, Aperture, Airport Utility, more
A handful of new software updates have been quietly issued by Apple following the WWDC keynote on Monday -- including one for a device that was only announced that day. A few are intended mainly to add Retina graphics support for the new MacBook Pros, and Airport Utility has been updated to handle the new dual-band Airport Express. Mountain Lion: Keine native X11 – Unterstützung mehr
Nach Java muss eine weiterer, früher fester Bestandteil von OS X daran glauben: X11.
Was ist X11? In Kurzform: Es ermöglicht eine grafische Oberfläche unter UNIX-Betriebssystemen darzustellen (auch unter Linux).
Warum benötigt OS X dann dieses “Programm” nicht? Apple verwendet Aqua zur Darstellung grafischer Elemente.
Aber kein Problem, wie im Titelbild zu sehen ist kann man wie unter Java mit einem Klick auf Fortfahren X11 wieder installieren. Allerdings nicht via der Softwareaktualisierung, sondern über die Website.

Mad Catz partnering with Microsoft Studios for Halo 4-branded headsets
Looks like Mad Catz has more up its sleeve than just the Wii U accessories it announced at E3 last week. The company just announced a partnership with Microsoft Studios to create Halo 4-branded gaming headsets. AU patent commissioner embroiled in Samsung complaint
On Friday, information surfaced that Samsung has added the Australian patent commissioner to a complaint alleging that the official didn't follow protocol when issuing Apple some patents. As a result, Samsung is attempting to invalidate the patents before the Australian court battle begins between the two giants. The hearing to invalidate the patents allegedly granted beyond the powers of the patent commissioner is scheduled for June 25. The overall patent battle will begin some time later this summer.

Accessory maker Crimson USA has announced the expansion of its Aluminum Frame Case collection for the iPhone 4/4S. Using a new painting process, the AFC can now be coated in a shiny, high-gloss finish. The first new color to be released will be white, however, new colors are expected to follow in the coming weeks. Apple announces Apple Design Award winners at WWDC
Apple has announced the winners of this year's Apple Design Awards at the WWDC conference, and 2012 is apparently the year of games on the Mac. Two games, Deus Ex and Limbo, have claimed both spots in the Mac ADAs this year, which is the first time in my memory that two games have done so. Games have won before but usually it's in specifically game-centered categories, and productivity apps are usually highlighted. This year it's two games that originally started out on Windows and Xbox, which is pretty crazy.

Apple keeps Mac Pro alive with minor update [U]
[Update: added comments from NYT columnist David Pogue] Apple has quietly updated its Mac Pro line, putting an end to speculation that the product would be discontinued -- but has instead given the machine the lightest possible refresh, updating the processors slightly (faster versions of the same two-year-old Westfield chips) and dropping the price of the 12-core standard configuration by $1,200 to $3,800. Worms 2 Armageddon gets asychronous play
Worms 2 Armageddon for iOS has just picked up an update with the most requested feature in Worms history: Asychronous play. That long word, in case you haven't heard it before, simply means that players can now play against each other on different schedules. We're talking about Worms with Friends here, essentially: You make a move, send it to your friend, he or she makes a move, and so on.
It's very cool, and it should allow for some excellent face-offs among friends. The update allows for sixteen total games to be played at any time, so you can go jump on in and start throwing around some grenades, grapple hooks, and/or explosive sheep. Competitors react to announcement of Apple nav app in iOS 6
I wasn't sure if any competitors to Apple in the nav space were going to react to Apple offering free turn-by-turn directions in iOS 6, but I did get some interesting comments from the folks at Garmin/Navigon.
Johan-Till Broer at Garmin International shared this statement from Garmin today:
"We've been competing successfully with free navigation on Android phones, and through third party apps also on the iPhone, for a couple of years now, and it has been widely anticipated that Apple would introduce a new maps app with navigation functionalities. New Apple nav app uses TomTom as primary provider
Our sister site, Engadget, is reporting that the new navigation app from Apple will use TomTom maps as a primary, but not the only source of street map data.
We were sitting around wondering how people like Garmin, Navigon and others would feel about Apple providing turn-by-turn for free on iOS devices, and now we know that at least TomTom is in on the deal.
Specifically, on the new nav app copyright page, it gives 2006-2012 ownership to TomTom and "others."

Apple updates AirPort Utility for iOS to support the all-new AirPort Express
Apple has pushed out an update to it AirPort Utility iOS app. The app allows users to manage their wireless network and AirPort base stations right from their iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. AirPort Utility 1.1 adds support for configuring base stations for IPv6 as well as support for the all-new AirPort Express, which Apple launched earlier today.
The new Airport Express resembles a white AppleTV (in shape) and adds an extra Ethernet port (for a total of two) and support for simultaneous dual-band 802.11n WiFi networks. AirPort Utility is a free download.

ITC judge tosses five Google patents in HTC vs. Apple suit
An International Trade Commission (ITC) judge has granted Apple's motion to have five of the patents asserted against it by HTC thrown out of an ongoing legal dispute. The five patents were assigned to HTC by Google less than a week before HTC filed the complaint in September 2011. Three of eight patents remain in HTC's second ITC complaint against Apple.

Facebook 'acqui-hires' Pieceable Viewer developers
The staff behind Pieceable Viewer, a browser-based viewer for iOS apps, has been hired on by Facebook. The staff acquisition was detailed today in an announcement on the company's site. Notably, Facebook will only be bringing on Pieceable's entire staff, not the company itself, its technology, or its stored customer data.

Visualized: 100 Retina display iPads sit down at the dinner table...
What if you took 3.1 million pixels, per iPad, and then crammed 100 (or so) of them on a table at WWDC? You'd have a pretty insane, super-connected Retina table. Apple keeps Mac Pro alive with minor update
Apple has quietly updated its Mac Pro line, putting an end to speculation that the product would be discontinued -- but has instead given the machine the lightest possible refresh, updating the processors slightly (faster versions of the same two-year-old Westfield chips) and dropping the price of the 12-core standard configuration by $1,200 to $3,800. The base and server models are priced the same as before, but now include up to 12GB of RAM.

Apple allowed WWDC attendees to take a closer look at the new 15-inch MacBook Pro, which features a 2880x1800 Retina display among other new features. The new design measures just 0.71 inches thick and weighs in at 4.46 pounds, shaving nearly a quarter inch and a full pound off the standard 15-inch unibody MacBook Pro. iOS 6 Maps app uses TomTom mapping data
The iOS 6 Maps app, revealed today, actually uses TomTom data as its primary source of mapping data, screenshots show. A check of the Acknowledgements section lists TomTom under copyrights. The app's corner menu, meanwhile, mentions "Data from TomTom, others."

Apple quietly updates USB SuperDrive, Airport Express
Amidst the slew of new products and apps announced today, also has also made unannounced changes to existing products. The MacBook Air and Mac mini (and now MacBook Pro) accessory USB SuperDrive has gained the addition of being able to natively burn DVDA (DVD-Audio) discs, a first for a Mac SuperDrive. The new Airport Express has been redesigned in its external appearance, along with the addition of a new dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n radio.

Daily iPhone App: Catapult King is beautifully destructive
Catapult King lacks innovation on the surface, unfortunately. It looks like an Angry Birds clone in 3D, and that's basically what it is. I say "unfortunately" because I hope that won't keep you from giving it a look anyway. I saw this title for the first time at E3 last week, and while I am not a big fan of Angry Birds, I've really enjoyed Catapult King.
It's a Chillingo-published title (as Angry Birds was originally, you'll recall), so it's got all of the polish that Chillingo os known for. The game just looks amazing. The graphics are clear and colorful, and there are a lot of nice touches, like art in the background of each stage that really adds a lot of depth and vision to the proceedings. iPad Smart Case: Der Deckel bekommt einen Topf
Das Smart Cover ist ein Deckel, der einfach auf des iPad gelegt wird und somit das Display schützt. Dieser Deckel bekommt nun seinen Topf: Mit dem iPad Smart Case wird das Apple-Tablet auch von hinten geschützt.
Es wurde zwar nicht auf der Keynote vorgestellt, ist aber dennoch eben ganz neu in den Apple Store gekommen: das iPad Smart Case.
Die Funktionalität ist die selbe wie bei dem Smart Cover: Die Display-Abdeckung kann eingeklappt werden und somit dient es als Ständer mit zwei verschiedenen Winkeln. Darüber hinaus schaltet das Cover natürlich das iPad an und aus.

AirPort Express Basisstation: Neues Modell mit Dual-Band
Auf der heutigen WWDC-Keynote fand sie keine Erwähnung. Trotzdem dürfte die neue AirPort Express Basisstation wiederholt zum beliebten Zubehörprodukt in der Apple-Welt avancieren. Äußerlich dem Apple TV nicht unähnlich, bietet sie die bekannten Funktionen und funkt ab sofort simultan auf zwei Bändern.
Auch die neue AirPort Express Basisstation bietet zwei Ethernet-Anschlüsse (1x WAN, 1x LAN), einen USB-Port für die Anbindung von Druckern und den bekannten Audio-Anschluss (analog/optisch). Neu ist vor allem das Design im Apple-TV-Look und die Unterstützung für simultanes Dual-Band (2,4 und 5 GHz).

Enhanced PhotoSteam somewhat rescues soon-to-be-missing Galleries
There was a good deal of gnashing of teeth, including mine, about the loss of MobileMe galleries which will vanish June 30 as MobileMe becomes iCloud.
