RED 9-inch touchscreen, OLED EVF and Meizler Module eyes-on (video)
Deep-pocketed RED owners take heed. The company just demoed some pretty nifty module updates, including an OLED EVF, a new 9-inch touchscreen and the crown jewel Meizler Module, which brings to the table such features as wireless 1080p transmission, a wireless timecode transceiver and full wireless lens control -- we're particularly taken with that last feature, which effectively enables remote-controlled follow focus, aperture and zoom control. The new 9-inch will also come in handy with wireless control, making it easier to verify sharpness and exposure. Leaked video promises Office 15 on a crane, on a train, in a boat, potentially with a goat
What's this, then? It's purported a leaked promotional video for Office 15, the upcoming version of Microsoft's perennial favorite software suite. Not surprisingly, the animated short, which was "pulled from beta software," talks up the software's cloud functionality. "It's your Office," says the chipper voice. "It goes wherever you go." New Google Drive leak has iOS included, launch next week
The often-rumored Google Drive might have at last settled on a more definitive launch plan that would include true cross-platform access. A draft press release sliped to The Next Web had the service more closely following the Dropbox formula, where files were stored in a syncing folder or folders on a Mac or Windows PC. Although widely suspected, it's now believed to have an iOS app to match the Android and desktop components.

Daily iPad App: Soundbrush lets you create music with a brush
SoundBrush is a US $1.99 iPad app that lets you create original compositions by swiping your finger across the iPad screen. The description sounded a bit odd, but I had fun playing with SoundBrush and discovering what it could do.
You can have a total of 4 instrumental lines -- piano, strings, flute and synth, and it appears the app selects proper harmonies when you lay your tracks down. I was surprised how good my little compositions sounded, although I wasn't quite ready for a concert.
The app lets you hear the notes as you draw them, and you can super-impose a grid to show you the notes you are drawing. You can delete anything you have written with a double tap, so you can actually edit the music you create. The canvas scrolls, so

Walmart starts rolling out new Apple stores-within-stores
Walmart is beginning to deploy a new Apple store-within-in-a-store concept in its outlets, ifoAppleStore reports. One early example is an outlet in Lowell, Arkansas, which now has an Apple section with wooden tables that have products like iPads locked in display cases underneath. More conspicuous though are large, backlit, double-sided displays above the tables, something not normally seen in other retail chains' Apple sections.

Pebble watch exceeds expectations with $3m raised
The Pebble e-paper watch project covered last week and featured on crowd-sourcing website Kickstarter has now raised over 31 times more capital than it was originally intended. The initial pace was certainly impressive, as the project met its goal within just two hours of it being posted on the site. The device, once manufactured, promises to bring with it iOS and Android compatibility over a Bluetooth connection.

Google's Brin: Apple, Facebook threats to freedom
Google co-founder Sergey Brin used an interview late Sunday to single out companies he saw as potential threats to the Internet. Along with singling out actual censorship and an aggressive media industry, he informed The Guardian that proprietary enviroments, such as Apple's iOS and Facebook's web code, were considered dangers. They risked isolating information, Brin argued, and an open search tool like Google couldn't have existed if sites like Facebook had been the norm.

Google finally grabs Gmail domain and trademark in Germany: users can drop the 'oogle'
Google has offered its email client to willing Germans since 2005, however the typical Gmail domain had already been snapped up by a local businessman in Germany and the company had to plump for the longer googlemail.de addresses. Now, according to the Financial Times, both the Gmail trademark and domain were transferred across to Google earlier this month, although there are no specifics as to how much money changed hands in the deal. With that minor issue sorted, Google packs its backs for its next destination -- maybe it should try Iran.

JVC ships 4K camcorder, intros new handheld ProHD models
JVC has announced two new ProHD handheld cameras designed for broadcasters and the release of the first handheld 4K camcorder at the NAB show today. Blackmagic Design at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show outed three new products for professional video editors. Daily iPhone App: SpellTower is a fast-paced word game with local multiplayer support
SpellTower is a challenging word game that was recently updated to version 3.0. This latest version includes retina graphics for the new iPad and local multiplayer support. Similar to Bookworm and other word games, SpellTower has a grid of letter tiles that you use to spell words by selecting adjacent letters. Each correct spelling removes tiles and earns you points. The goal of the game is to remove as many letter tiles as possible.

RED Dragon 6K sensor upgrade eyes-on

Reed Hastings takes Comcast to task for skirting net neutrality

Apple updates Cards and iBooks apps
Apple has released updates for its Cards and iBooks apps. The iBooks 2.2.1 update is relatively minor, only addressing some stability and performance improvements and fixing an issue which prompted users to sign-in with their Apple ID at unexpected times.
In addition to stability and performance improvements the Cards 1.1 update also adds some new card styles, including cards for Mother's Day, new Get Well card designs, and additional cards for birthdays, thank you and more.

Intel SSD 330 official, mixes budget price with speed
Intel began its week by introducing a new and relatively uncommon blend of performance and lower prices among solid-state drives in the SSD 330 series. iPhone case doubles as a Magna Doodle
I think this is great, and I assume that other "children of the '80s" will agree. The iFoolish is a silly name for an iPhone case that's actually got a working Magna Doodle on the back. Sure, they can't use the name, but that's a Magna Doodle all right. A little magnet on a pen that you can use to draw a series of what I believe are iron filings up to the drawing surface. You've seen these things before -- draw whatever you want on them, and then use the little slider at the bottom to throw off the magnetic field again and then clear the board.

G-Technology ships 8TB RAID 0 drive with Thunderbolt
The G-RAID Thunderbolt drive introduced in the fall of last year is now shipping. The external drive houses two 4TB, 7,200RPM Hitachi Deskstar hard drives and offers a 10Gbps connection through Intel's Thunderbolt connection, making it suitable for use with Macs and upcoming Windows PCs. Apple to do pollution audit of Chinese circuit board maker
Apple is planning to do a pollution audit of one of its parts suppliers, a Chinese environmental group tells the Wall Street Journal. A vice director for the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs, Wang Ding, elaborates that the supplier makes printed circuit boards, but Wang is refusing to name the company. She does say that the IPE will be participating in the audit, and have help from professional auditors. The group is hoping to audit other Apple suppliers as well, but Wang adds that this is dependent "on Apple's and its suppliers' actions."

Phil Hassey's Anathema Mines renamed Dynamite Jack, gets a trailer
A little while ago at GDC, I sat down with Galcon creator Phil Hassey. He showed me a game he called Anathema Mines that was a stylish take on stealth action, with a fun mechanic of blowing up walls (as long as you could keep out of the reach of flashlight-wielding enemies). Apparently he's done a lot of work and a little bit of brand tweaking to the title, because it's now called Dynamite Jack, and you can watch the official trailer below.

There's something thrilling about using job postings to parse a company's strategy, especially when the advert is so gosh darn low on secrecy. Take Microsoft, for instance, which posted four openings for developers to work on its Skype for Browsers project. Cardo set to intro first BT communicator for bicyclists
Cardo, known for its helmet-mounted intercom systems for motorcyclists such as the Scala Rider G4 we sampled, has now introduced the first such system for bicyclists. The BK-1 will make its official debut at the Sea Otter Classic cycling festival in California that kicks off on April 19. The BK-1 can link two or three riders at distances of up to 1,600 feet and lets users pair up with MP3 players, GPS devices, and smartphones.

Australian government, Apple still disagree on branding of 4G LTE iPad
Apple is going head-to-head against the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) in a Melbourne Federal Court on Monday, says a report in The Sydney Morning Herald. At the heart of this dispute is the use of 4G in the iPad name in Australia.

OS X animations used to make abstract art
Emilio Gomariz is an artist who's used the window animations in OS X to create some pretty amazing abstract art. You can look at the YouTube videos to see just what he's done, but my favorite is the one above, called Twist Choreography. To create it, Gomariz opened up a series of long, thin windows from the dock, spinning them out into an orderly stack. There are others, too, where he uses Expose or other OS X tricks (you can make the window animations go slow like this by holding Shift, in case you hadn't heard that yet) to create beautiful patterns as the windows grow and shrink.

Neues iPad: Apple soll Benutzung des 4G-Kürzels einstellen
Der Ende März begonnene Streit zwischen der Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) und Apple bezüglich des neuen iPads wurde heute in Melbourne vor Gericht ausgefochten. Zu einer Einigung sind die beiden Parteien allerdings nicht gekommen.
Wie The Next Web berichtet, plant die ACCC angeblich Apple dazu zu bringen, die 4G-Bezeichnung aus dem Modellnamen des neuen iPad vollständig zu entfernen. Sollte den Wettbewerbshütern dies gelingen, könnte dies auch weltweit Auswirkungen auf Apples Marketing haben.

OWC released a do-it-yourself upgrade kit for 2011 27-inch iMac owners that'll let them add an SSD to their current hard drive. The US$45 kit includes all the tools and the power cable needed to add the solid state drive (sold separately).
The process requires you to remove the 27-inch glass display with suction cups, so it's not for the faint of heart. There's an installation video, which you can watch before you make your purchase. If the DIY is too complicated, you can still use OWC's turnkey service which will install the SSDs for you.

Apple has removed trial versions of Aperture and the iWork suite from its website, reports observe. In both cases, users are now being asked to visit the Mac App Store and pay for full products. WD VelociRaptor 10K RPM drive hits 1TB
Western Digital on Monday timed the launch of a larger VelociRaptor drive with the NAB media expo. The new, 1TB capacity almost doubles the prior 600GB peak and is seen as a way to give video editors the capacity they need while still giving performance above and beyond conventional disk drives. In Deutschland ist guter Content schon so eine Sache. Serien gibt es zwar auch hier via Online-Streaming kostenlos, leider aber nur die in Deutschland produzierten. Für diejenigen, die sich also Germanys Next Top Model 3x hintereinander anschauen wollen, eine super Sache.
Für den Rest ist Deutschland eine Content-Wüste. Es sitzen wohl nicht die hellsten Köpfe in den oberen Etagen der Medienstudios – denn sonst wäre dieser Markt schon längst eine Goldgrube.

Moody's downgrades Nokia credit, Nokia insists it's strong
Moody's on Monday downgraded Nokia's debt rating a level from Baa2 to Baa3. The credit rating giant based its decision on Nokia's lowered outlook and saw it as a reflection of longer-term, more systemic issues. The company was being pinched both at the low end, by a wave of very cheap phones and Chinese discounts, and at the high end by a "more challenging" transition where Symbian was falling faster than Windows Phone could replace it.

Another Java trojan for Mac discovered, this time through Microsoft Word
Just days after Apple released its official Flashback trojan patch, another Java trojan has been discovered that could possibly infect Macs. The trojan is known as "LuckyCat." Rumor has iPad mini hitting in Q3 for $249-$299
A so-called iPad mini will ship in the third quarter of the year as a "counter attack" to upcoming Windows tablets, a Chinese website claims. Apple, Chinese environmental group will audit factory for pollution concerns
ComputerWorld notes that Apple and a Chinese environmental group plan to jointly audit one of its factories in China. The audit, which is just a pilot project for the time being, will be completed by the end of April. It will be done at one of the factories that manufacture printed circuit boards for the company. The goal of the audit is to identify and pollution concerns.

Apple today issued a press release announcing the new third-generation iPad will go on sale in another twleve countries starting on Friday, April 20. Notably, one of the twelve is the important South Korean market. Tablets als Rechner-Ersatz (erneut)
Auf meinem Schreibtisch steht ein großer iMac. Ich würde ihn gerne loswerden und durch ein iPad ersetzen. Mittlerweile gibt es ja für das iPad sehr schicke Hüllen, die daraus ein Notebook mit Tastatur machen. Mein Problem ist nur: Es geht nicht. Ich weiß nicht, wie eure private Rechnernutzung so aussieht, aber ich komme mit dem iPad auch drei Jahre nach seinem Erscheinen nicht weit:
Mail, Browser, Kalender, Kontakte, YouTube und Musik bzw. Videos sind dank der mitgelieferten Apps und Zusatzprogrammen wie EyeTV oder AirVideo kein Problem. RSS und all das, was ich schon früher erwähnt hatte, sind natürlich ebenso kein Problem.
Aber:
Der Browser kommt dummerweise schon ins Schleudern, wenn ich irgendwo ein Bild hochladen möchte. Geht schlicht nicht.

Coachella 2012: 2Pac als Hologramm ist Festivalhighlight
Das hat am vergangenen Wochenende für einiges an Gänsehaut und Euphorie gesorgt. Das Coachella-Festival in den USA ist eines der größten seiner Art und als neben den Hauptacts Dr. Dre und Snoop Dogg auf einmal 2Pac die Bühne als 3D-Hologramm betrat, wussten die wenigsten, was nun echt ist und was nicht. Was in Japan mit Hatsune Miku schon zum Popalltag gehört, nimmt hier kurzzeitig noch immer einem die Spucke weg. Panasonic introduces new microP2 SD-sized storage at NAB 2012
Among several new announcements for NAB 2012, Panasonic had time to show off its new microP2 card. It does all the high speed transfer pro video shooters have come to expect from their P2 hardware, but in a package that's the size of an SD card. Panasonic also showed off a companion adaptor that could be used to make the new micro-sized cards compatible with existing PCMCIA-based hardware, however they will need a firmware upgrade (at an unspecified cost, of course) first. Sony's otherwise dull pre-NAB press conference yielded one gem -- the NEX-FS700 cinema camera -- which the company announced earlier this month. The producer behind the independent film about Steve Jobs told Neowin that filming on the biopic will start in May in preparation for release in the fourth quarter of this year. The film will be shot in Los Angeles.
