Boeing to launch super secure Android phone, hopes it takes off
You know what we've always wondered? Why don't Boeing just hurry up and release a phone? Joking aside, this is really happening. The news comes via National Defense Magazine which reports that the airplane manufacturer is developing an Android handset which will have strong security credentials. Google beats expectations, sees profit jump 61%
Google beat expectations for its results on Thursday and simultaneously set out plans to create a new kind of stock to keep its management in place. The company saw its mostly ad-based revenue up 24 percent, to nearly $10.7 billion, and its net profit even higher, up 61 percent to $2.89 billion. While the company didn't delve into specific factors, it was thriving both on its core business and on the "momentum from the big bets" on Android, Chrome, and YouTube, CEO Larry Page said.

Apple begins requiring extra security for Apple IDs
Within the last 24 hours or so, Apple has started to require extra security for Apple IDs, notes The Next Web. People downloading new apps in iOS or in iTunes are reportedly being asked to pick three security questions, as well as enter a backup email address. After the process is complete, an email is sent to verify the backup address.

Apple cures Flashback malware with third OS X Java update
Apple fulfilled promises of a cure for a rare Mac exploit on Thursday evening by posting another key Java update. Java for OS X 2012-003 for Lion owners, and Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 8, both actively remove the "most common variants" of Flashback. Loading the update automatically scans for Flashback and, if it's found, lets the user know that it was pulled.

Apple releases fix for Flashback malware
It promised earlier this week that a fix was coming, and Apple has now delivered a Java security update that is says removes "the most common variants of the Flashback malware." That update also reconfigures the Java web plug-in to disable the automatic execution of Java applets by default (in Lion, at least -- those still on Snow Leopard are advised to do that themselves), although folks can re-enable that functionality if they choose. As usual, OS X users can download the update through the Software Update application.

Hulu reducing monthly subscription prices in Japan by 33 percent
Looks like Huluers in the Land of the Rising Sun may have something to cheer about, as the entertainment service announced earlier it's lowering its monthly fees. Hulu claims the reason behind the dropped prices comes from having "listened to user feedback and assessed current market situations" -- or perhaps from taking note of the million-plus customers it gained with a similar strategy in the US. Java for OS X 2012-003 update kills Flashback malware, available now
Just this morning we noted that Apple had not yet come out with a tool to kill the Flashback malware, and that Kaspersky and F-Secure had both developed their own free tools. This afternoon, Apple released Java for OS X 2012-003 to remove "most common variants of the Flashback malware."

Sprint's HTC EVO 4G LTE zips into the FCC, zips back out again
HTC's EVO 4G LTE swung down on a rope of white mercy and straight into the FCC's cold and dark underground bunker. Given that the device is exclusive to Sprint, it's no surprise to see that it'll slurp down LTE from the network's Band 25. There's also the usual selection of CDMA 2000, 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth radios we'd expect from a smartphone in this day and age. Adobe Revel 1.2 brings events, better image handling
Adobe has posted a v1.2 update to Revel, a photography app for both Macs and iOS devices. Previously known as Carousel, the software is mainly a client for a matching cloud service where users can store and share photos. Basic editing tools handle tasks like filters, exposure, and cropping. Google reports $10.65 billion in revenue for Q1 2012, splits stock
Google just announced its earnings for Q1 of 2012 and the company did not disappoint. It raked in $10.65 billion, a full 24 percent higher than last year for the same time period. GAAP net income for the quarter was $2.89 billion, more than twice that of Q1 of 2011, which brings its total war chest to $49.3 billion in cash on hand. CrushFTP has released a sixth edition of its self-titled file transfer server software. The platform handles FTP/SFTP, HTTP, and WebDAV traffic. New in CrushFTP 6 is an overhauled GUI, which is not only said to be more "modern," but entirely web-based for tasks such as administration, jobs, reports, and preferences. Microsoft warned Thursday that it would start asking a monthly fee for using its Bing Search app programming interface (API). Apple patents ultrasonic bonding process for earbuds
Apple may be planning to update the earbuds it bundles with its iPod and iPhone products in the future, as indicated by a newly discovered patent filing. It involves a process called ultrasonic welding and would make for a seamless-looking product, something Apple is a big proponent of in the iMac and other devices. Paper for iPad tops 1.5m downloads, 7m pages in two weeks
Fiftythree sent word late Wednesday that its Paper app for the iPad (App Store) has crossed the 1.5 million download mark in its first two weeks. SSD maker Fusion-io has introduced its ioFX PCIe-based solid-state drive for workstations that contains 420GB of storage. Meant for HD video editing in the movie industry for special effects work, the card uses a less costly internal design than other Fusion-io cards. Apple extends online store discounts to iBooks publishers
Apple is now offering special discounts at the online Apple store for some or all iBookstore publishers, TUAW reports. Buyers must go through iTunes Connect, but discounts on computers can range from $60 off the cheapest Mac mini to $500 off the base-level Mac Pro. The major limitation is quantity, as shoppers are said to be restricted to two Macs, two iPods/iPads, and one Apple TV.

Amazon CloudSearch brings A9 to devs and businesses
Amazon certainly isn't the first to offer hosted search services for third parties, but its model might make it the simplest option. Businesses or devs looking to create custom search indexes need only to upload what they want to make searchable and Amazon takes care of the rest -- including deciding how much hardware to provision based on index size and traffic. In den USA gibt es Currents schon seit Dezember. Jetzt steht die Nachrichten-App von Google für Android und iOS auch international zum kostenlosen Download bereit und stellt deutschsprachige Publikationen wie die Neue Zürcher Zeitung oder Kicker in einem für mobile Geräte geeigneten Format dar. Mittlerweile sind 400 Verlagspublikationen und über 14.000 selbst produzierte Editionen verfügbar, aber auch RSS-Feeds von beliebigen Webseiten lassen sich einbinden, wie oben das Beispiel unserer Seite zeigt. Sehr praktisch ist zudem, dass sich die Inhalte zum Offline-Lesen runterladen lassen, wahlweise mit oder ohne Bilder.

XLR8 provides disappointing car noises, suitable for ironic use
I told Meg the other day that I'd take a look at XLR8, a $0.99 entertainment app currently rocking 5-star ratings over at the app store. The app uses a mix of GPS and accelerometer readings to simulate racing car sounds as you drive around town.
What you do is this: You hook up the phone to your car's sound system, you place it in a firm mount, and then you press start and wait for the electronic voice to give you clearance to drive ahead. It then monitors movement to match your driving to vroomy vroomy sounds.
If it worked well and less obviously pandered to in-app sales, this would be a really cute app. The problem is, of course, that it didn't work well,

Lawsuit tries to collect from Apple, HTC, RIM on basic touch
Previously unknown firm Touchscreen Gestures has sued Apple, HTC, RIM, and Samsung this week for allegedly violating four patents for some of the simplest elements of touchscreen input. iOS devices, newer BlackBerrys, and Android devices allegedly copy methods for single taps, double taps, dragging, and scrolling. The patents had been transferred at some point from notebook trackpad developer Sentelic, although whether they were bought or handed over with hopes of a payout aren't clear.

Nest rejects Honeywell claims, takes on ex-Apple counsel
Nest more formally responded to Honeywell's patent lawsuit both through a rejection of the claims inside as well as by drawing once more on Apple for top executives. Apple introduces VIP discounts for iBooks publishers
Some sharp eyes have once again discovered something new and cool in Apple-land. Apple appears to be offering rather hefty discounts to some (possibly all) iBooks publishers as part of a new iTunes VIP program. Information is still developing on this front.
Made available through iTunes Connect, these discounts appear to be exclusive to the iBooks program. Discounts range from $500 off the base Mac Pro down to $60 off the base mini. As with previous programs of this nature, Apple places a limit on the kinds and quantity of hardware affected. The discount is for two computers, two iPods (which appear to include iPads, etc.) and one Apple TV.

Apple TV (2012) uses same chip as iPad 2 but only uses one core
The latest Apple TV was torn down recently, but it still has a surprise or two up its sleeve. According to a report in Chipworks, the 2012 unit has a dual-core A5 chip that's only using one of its two cores. They discovered it's actually the same 32nm SoC found in newer iPad 2 units. Canon intros EOS-1D C: DSLR with 4K video recording
Canon made its concept camera real on Thursday by revealing the EOS-1D C ahead of NAB. The variant on its highest-end DSLR is the first camera of its kind to record 4K (4096x2160) video. Although capped at 24 frames per second, the 8-bit, 4:2:2 video is advanced enough that it can be used as part of a professional movie shoot using greater-than-HD video cameras from companies like RED while keeping the size much smaller for handheld recording.

Adobe has formally unveiled Premiere Pro CS6, the next major upgrade of its video editing software. Among its changes is a radically different interface, for instance defaulting to a new "two-up" workspace in which the Source Monitor and the Program Monitor sit side-by-side, with Info, Effect, Project, Media Browser, Timeline, and Audio Meter panels below. Gartner: Apple takes third place in US PC shipments for Q1 2012
Gartner released its quarterly shipment estimates for the PC market in Q1 2012. The results show that Apple is in third place with a 10.6 percent market share. The Cupertino company trails HP and Dell which has a 29 percent and 22.3 percent market share, respectively.
Gartner calculates that Apple shipped 1.6 million Macs in Q1 2012, which is a 3.8 percent increase from the same quarter in 2011. It doesn't beat HP which increased 6.6 percent year over year, but it is better than the overall US PC industry which declined 3.5 percent. These numbers include desktop PCs, notebooks and mini-notebooks, but does not include media tablets like the iPad.

Max Payne and Burnout Crash hit the iOS App Store
Two high-profile games, one from Rockstar Games and one from Electronics Arts, hit the iOS App Store today. The most anticipated of the two is Max Payne. The third-person shooter was originally created by Remedy Entertainment for the PC, and Rockstar Games then ported it to the major gaming consoles. Now fans of the series can fire up the dark action game on their retina iPad and iPhone.
The other major title is Burnout Crash from EA. This is another game in a long-standing series that was originally developed by Criterion Games. The car driving title lets you speed through cities while leaving a wake of destruction in your path.

Intel's Developer Forum in Beijing has seen the company make predictions as to the long-term future of computer displays. A presentation caught by Liliputing saw "Rich Displays" with very high resolutions likely becoming mainstream from 2013 onwards. Australia may join in targeting Apple, e-book publishers
The Australia Competition and Consumer Commission is considering taking the same path that the US Department of Justice did in confronting Apple and publishers over e-book pricing. Regulators have been asking Australian retailers whether they thought publishers were rigging pricing in the country. Flashback malware removal tools released by security firms
While Apple has said it "is developing software that will detect and remove the Flashback malware" that has affected up to 600,000 Macs worldwide, it has yet to release any fix. In lieu of that a few security and antivirus firms have gone ahead and released their own Flashback removal tools.

Intel is now shipping second-generation Thunderbolt controllers, previously referred to as "Cactus Ridge," that could accompany a possible refresh of some Mac products in the near future. While Ebay has been host to a number of Apple prototypes and rare machines before, a truly remarkable offering has been uncovered -- with an equally remarkable price. A seller going by the name "wozniac" in tribute to the Apple co-founder has put a complete and operational Macintosh 128k prototype created in advance of the actual debut of the Mac in January, 1984. Marketplace posts video to accompany Foxconn reports
Marketplace reporter Rob Schmitz, the man who uncovered the discrepancies in Mike Daisey's account of the lives of Foxconn workers, has posted a short YouTube video (seen below) with some of the footage from inside the Foxconn factory he visited. The video shows the steps of iPad construction, which reveal the introduction of some automation but confirm that the tablet is made largely by hand. The report offers a few new details as well.

Velti: new iPad helped push iOS over Android in ad share
Research by mobile marketing company Velti has shown that Appleís iOS pushed past Android in mobile ad share thanks to the arrival of the new iPad. Velti owns Mobclix Exchange an has analyzed the data collected from 33,405 mobile apps recorded in use by the service. According to Velti, at the end of 2011, Apple and Google each had a 50 percent share of the market, but iOS took a 53 percent share for the month of March.

Microsoft wins short block on Motorola banning Windows, Xbox
Microsoft scored an important win in a Seattle courtroom by successfully getting a temporary block on any Motorola bans of its products. The temporary restraining order prevents Motorola from securing a ban on Windows or the Xbox 360 until the court believes it has made a sincere effort to license its H.264 video patents under FRAND (fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory) terms. Microsoft's maneuver both stops anything in the immediate trial and in other lawsuits or trade disputes.

Adobe launches first beta of Flash 11.3 for Macs
Adobe has released a public beta of it's next iteration of Flash Player, version 11.3.300.214, which features improvements to the desktop player, as well as enhancements to AIR Mobile for developers. In the release notes, Adobe mentions that it has "relaxed" the driver gating hardware acceleration to 2006, which may mean that older cards and Intel graphic chipsets such as the GMA 950 will gain hardware acceleration in the final release.

Samsung details Galaxy Tab 2, Player 4.2 launches for US
Samsung late Wednesday detailed the US launch plans for a trio of its main Android tablet devices for the year. The Galaxy Tab 2 line will come to the US in both 7.0- and 10.1-inch forms with their dual-core 1GHz processors, Android 4.0, three-megapixel rear camera and VGA front cameras intact. The two are considered lower-cost versions of original Galaxy Tab ancestors but do have unique support for infrared remote control using Peel's Smart Remote app.
