Neues iPad: Aktualisierung von Air Display ermöglicht HiDPI-Modus in OS X
Wie vor einigen Wochen angekündigt, hat Avatron, die Entwickler von Air Display, heute die Aktualisierung ihrer Display-Erweiterung für iOS veröffentlicht. Mit Air Display ist es schon jetzt möglich OS X auf einem hochauflösenden Bildschirm dem neuen iPad zu nutzen.
Air Display besteht aus zwei Teilen: der kostenpflichtigen iOS-Anwendung* sowie dem Desktop-Programm, welches von der Avatron-Website kostenlos heruntergeladen werden kann. Nach der Installation

Facebook updates iOS app with Retina iPad support, more languages
Shortly after making some high-res changes to the desktop site, Facebook's now doing the same to its application for Apple's freshest slab on the block. Aside from the crisper look and higher resolution UI on the new iPad, the universal app also adds support for Czech, Danish, Indonesian, Malaysian, Norwegian, Portuguese and Thai languages. Flashback.K Trojan exploits unfixed Java vulnerability
Yet another new variant of the Flashback Trojan for the Mac has been discovered in the wild, says security firm F-Secure. Called Flashback.K, the new version is said to be dangerous not only because it can infect a Mac without an admin password, but because it relies on a Java vulnerability that has so far gone unfixed in OS X, even though Oracle itself has closed the hole. Apple distributes Mac Java updates on its own timetable.

Google Maps typical traffic expands to regular roads
Google Maps on Monday answered a frequent call to widen the coverage of its typical traffic layer. Previously limited to highways and other main routes, it now includes "arterial" roads, or larger main streets often connected to or otherwise near the highways. Google Maps Android users can still voluntarily contribute periodic location updates to help improve the data themselves.

iPhone video helps rescue trapped Chinese toddler
If this story had hit yesterday, we might have cried "April Fools!" As it is, though, it's a remarkable tale of a rescue -- helped by an iPhone. A Chinese two-year-old was trapped in a 40-foot-deep well, and the crews working to extract him could not get their hoist harness properly positioned.

Barnes & Noble optimizes Nook app for new iPad
Barnes & Noble has just released an updated version of its Nook for iOS app (free, App Store). It has been optimized for the new iPad and its Retina display with sharper graphics, words, and images. Otherwise, 3.1.3 brings with it more reading options, letting users have single- or dual-column views when in landscape orientation on the tablet, like in an actual book. Watch out, Apple -- that Samsung in your mirror may be closer than you think
The iPhone 4S is currently the king of the hill when it comes to smartphone sales in the U.S., but Samsung is coming on strong as the second place manufacturer for U.S. mobile carriers according to Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley.
AppleInsider posted the analyst's report that showed that the Samsung Galaxy S II has been the second most popular smartphone at AT&T and Sprint for the past four months, trailing the extremely popular iPhone 4S. The Galaxy S II is also the most popular smartphone at T-Mobile, which does not carry the iPhone.

iBookstore to expand to Brazil within 30 days, magazine says
The iBookstore is set to expand to Brazil within 30 days, claims a local magazine, Veja. No other details of the arrangement have been revealed, but the publication is the same one that roughly predicted when Apple would bring the iTunes Music Store to Brazil, and correctly stated that the first digital catalog by Roberto Carlos would be a highlight. comScore: iPhones use Wi-Fi much more than Android
iPhone owners are much more likely to hop on Wi-Fi than their Android-using counterparts, comScore found through a look at US and UK owners. About 71 percent of American iPhone owners, and 87 percent of their British parallels, used Wi-Fi along with 3G. Only 32 percent of US Android owners did the same, while 57 percent of UK Android owners do the same.

Editor's Note: From time to time, TUAW does cover commercial apps developed by our staffers, although it is relatively rare for individuals to write about their own projects (with some notable exceptions). In this case, Mike's experience of his app development process -- going from a code-naive start to a spot in the App Store -- is definitely worth sharing.

Terrafugia Transition production prototype completes first flight, set to land at NY Auto Show this Friday
Terrafugia's Transition could finally be making its way to the production line. The "flying car" has journeyed far beyond the concept phase, achieving its compulsory nod from the DOT last summer, and now reaching production prototype status. On March 23rd, the latest Transition flew past one more hurdle, completing its first airborne trial. Apple starts demanding extra hours from retail workers
Apple has begun demanding more hours from both its full- and part-time retail staff, sources tell ifoAppleStore. While full-time employees are, for instance, currently expected to work at least one weekend day per week -- normally meaning Saturday or Sunday -- Apple is reportedly adding Friday to its definition of the weekend, and insisting that full-timers work two out of three days. It's Playing fills the gap left by VLC with a well-designed video player
Recently, I looked over (but declined to review) a US$9.99 dictionary application. Despite one particularly lovely visual effect, I found it hard to define an audience for the product and thought the price tag hovered on the high side for an awkward app that didn't really do anything useful. In light of that almost-review, I'd venture to say that It's Playing, at $3.99 on iTunes, seems vastly under-priced.
I've used quite a number of media player apps over the past few years but none of them feels as tightly put together and with as much consideration for the user as It's Playing. This is a well-featured app that can play most every format you can throw at it and offers hardware decoding for MP4 and MKV files

Microsoft announces special edition Chrome Series Xbox 360 controllers
There's no console to match, but Xbox 360 owners who prefer things a little shinier than your run-of-the-mill controller will soon have a trio of new options to consider courtesy of Microsoft. It's just announced three new Chrome Series special edition controllers that will be available in "mid-May" for $54.99. Those come in your choice of blue, red or silver, and each feature the so-called "transforming D-pad" along with everything else you'd expect from a wireless Xbox 360 controller. Facebook for iOS gets Retina Display support
Good news for owners of the latest iPad. An update to the Facebook app now provides iPad Retina Display support. The 4.1.1 update also includes some other fixes and features, such as the ability to go offline in chat, fixes to photo displays of friends, and some language additions for users outside the US.

Internet Explorer shows signs of recovering web share
New NetApplications data has shown that Internet Explorer might be on a sustained, if slight, recovery in web share. Microsoft's browser gained almost exactly one point to hit 53.83 percent of browser use online. The gain roughly mirrored one from January and saw IE at its highest position since October.

Nokia goes after iPhone, Android in ads
Nokia is ramping up for the launch of its flagship Lumia 900 on April 8. As part of an advertising push, the Finnish company released a series of YouTube videos that target the iPhone and Android.
The ads take on the "fragile" glass design of the iPhone, the iPhone's "death grip" antenna controversy, and the washed-out display on Android's AMOLED-equipped smartphones. You can check out the videos below and let us know what you think in the comments.

Renault's Twizzy EV for 16 year-olds comes too late for Justin to skip the DMV queue
Renault's planning to take advantage of a change in the law that'll enable 16-year-olds to drive vehicles on the roads without a license by releasing the Twizzy EV. The futuristic golf-cart will have a top speed of 28mph and give budding Dominic Torettos the chance to drag-race each other in mall car parks every night. Microsoft cuts German link in protest over Motorola
Microsoft in a retaliatory move against Motorola ended teamwork with Germany company Arvato for software distribution. The move reported by Germany's Deutsche Presse-Agentur would see about 50 people lose their jobs as Microsoft relocated distribution to the Netherlands. Apple has gone from near death in the 1990s to the pinnacle of success two decades later. TIME tech journalist Ben Bajarin notes in a post today that the company is a highly important and necessary part of the American economy and says that "America needs Apple to keep doing what it's doing."
Probably the biggest point Bajarin makes is that Apple now drives economic growth in the country. During a deep recession, the company showed record growth and revenues. Garmin dips into in-car GPS and media with Suzuki
Garmin branched out into in-car GPS and media systems for the first time Monday through a deal with Suzuki. "Most" 2013 model year Suzuki cars will get a 6.1-inch touchscreen interface that both covers the prerequisite GPS navigation as well as support for playing back from phones and iPods through USB, the aux-in jack, or Bluetooth. Rumor has new iMacs using anti-reflective glass from G-Tech
Updated iMacs may use anti-reflective technology from Taiwanese supplier G-Tech Optoelectronics, according to DigiTimes. A new report cites "industry sources" as indicating that G-Tech will "supply AR (anti-reflective) glass solutions for Apple's all-in-one (AIO) PCs." Apple to adjust work schedules for retail employees
A report from ifoAppleStore suggests Apple is changing the work schedule for its retail employees to alleviate a problem with over-crowding. According to the report, some Apple stores have doubled their traffic in the last year and they need more staffers to handle this increase in customers.

Internet Explorer claws back a bit of market share at the expense of Chrome and Firefox
It may have been on a steady decline for years (albeit still the number one web browser all along), but it looks like Internet Explorer has now once again found itself on a bit of an upswing. According to the latest numbers from Net Applications, IE (all versions included) gained a full percentage point in the past month (following a similar gain in January) to sit at a market share of 53.83 percent, its highest level since September of 2011. iPad more readily available in-store than online
Want to get an iPad as soon as possible without having to wait weeks for it to arrive? According to a ComputerWorld report, your best bet is take a trip to your local Apple Store. The publication surveyed a handful of Apple stores and found that all the stores it called had at least one iPad model in stock. Online sales of the iPad, however, still have a delay of one to two weeks.

Neues iPad: 98 Prozent der Neukunden sind zufrieden mit ihrem Kauf

Consumer Reports puts iPad at top of the list, despite heat issue
A few weeks ago, Consumer Reports caused a stir when it claimed the new iPad ran twelve degrees hotter than its predecessor and reached 116 degrees. Now the consumer watchdog company is back to say the heat problem is not a cause for concern.
Consumer Reports acknowledges the iPad gets warm, but says this heating only occurs under select circumstances. The group noted that the heat climbed when the device was used on full brightness while playing a graphics-heavy, CPU-intensive game.

I love my new iPad and it appears that I am not alone. A March 22-28 Changewave survey of 200 new iPad owners shows that 98 percent are satisfied with their device and zero percent is very dissatisfied. Most users (82 percent) are very happy with their tablet and only a small percentage (two percent) are somewhat unsatisfied. Once those wags at the FCC had finished joking about how difficult the Galaxy Pocket is to see with the human eye, it was time to get examining. Samsung's cellphone with a 2.8-inch display was revealed to be packing GSM 850 / 1900 and UMTS Band V radios that'll operate on AT&T's network (and those like it). Samsung, NTT DoCoMo, et al. cancel plans for LTE chip joint venture
Looks like the decision to not make a decision has well, created a decision. Back in December of 2011, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic, Samsung and a smattering of other Japanese firms put their heads together in order to launch a joint venture to manufacture and sell ICs for mobile devices. Communication Platform Planning Co. was actually established with the goal to hawk these LTE semiconductors, but now that a consensus on how it'd all play out wasn't reached by the March 2012 deadline, it'll be liquidated in June. Apple boosts iAd developer payout to 70 percent
As previously expected, Apple has announced an increase in iAd developer payouts from 60 to 70 percent. The change took effect April 1st, and was signaled by a memo sent to developers over the weekend. The iAd pay ratio is now equivalent to the App Store, where Apple claims a 30 percent cut of revenue.

Early estimate: Samsung ahead of Apple once again in Q1 2012
Samsung should retake the edge in the smartphone space as of the first quarter, Canaccord Genuity said in early estimates. Analyst T. Michael Walkley saw Samsung going back to 28.2 percent share on the back of 41 million smartphones. Apple would have its strongest winter ever, but at 32.6 million iPhones would have a more modest 22.4 percent.

Ceton's Q DVR companion app for Windows Phone gets detailed tour (video)
You might recall Ceton's Q DVR making its debut at the start of the year and now the beans have been spilled on the multiroom recorder's companion app. The Windows Phone 7 version separates out into home, television and recent screens. The home section houses galleries and search, while television will display scheduled recordings, channel guides and management options for those upcoming shows. Finally, the recent screen keeps tabs on what you've been watching or recording last, all done in that inimitable metro style. With all the talk of battery life of iPhones and iPads it's easy to forget that your laptop battery needs some attention every so often.
My laptop battery is pretty old, and it doesn't last as long as it used to. No surprise there, but I'd like to easily quantify its condition. That's where a free app in the Mac app store comes in called Battery Health. This little utility will reveal your current charge level, the capacity of your battery (it loses capacity as it ages), the number of times it has been charged and more.

Study: new iPad more liked than iPad 2 among early adopters
Early owners of the new iPad are noticeably happier with it than its year-old predecessor, ChangeWave found in a small-scale ownership survey. In the group of 200 buyers, 82 percent were "very satisfied," a sharp boost from 74 percent a year ago with the iPad 2. Another 16 percent were at least "somewhat satisfied" versus 23 percent last year, showing that Apple had tackled some of the complaints of the previous generation.

Motorola could be subject to the same sort of investigation of patent abuse that Samsung is facing, European Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said in a speech during a stop in Washington, DC. ListBook is yet another to-do app with an engaging interface that is easy to use. Of course it exists in a sea of GTD (Getting Things Done) apps, but I think it is staying above water. The app is US $1.99.
ListBook is universal, supports notifications, and allows you to send your lists via email, but the list is not converted to text. The receiver must have ListBook too. That's a bit nasty.
Items can be tagged with colors, names, or descriptive icons. There is no limit to the number of lists, and you can easily swipe left and right to change lists, or even delete items. It's all very intuitive. Any items that aren't completed show up as a badge on the icon, alerting you that you have items yet to do.

Rumored Sony NEX FS-700 video cam surfaces with 4K support
Sony has taken the wraps off its rumored NEX FS700 pro video camera. As had been suggested, the video camera is capable of shooting at 4K resolution, but this will only be supported through a future upgrade. Microsoft moves logistics center out of Germany, blames Motorola patent battle
It may be a mere thorn in the foot of a giant like Microsoft, but the patent war with Motorola is clearly starting to sting. German news outlet CIO reports that Redmond has shifted part of its European logistics operation from Germany to the Netherlands, affecting around 50 jobs at a contractor called Arvato. Although it might seem like minor foot-shuffling, CIO says that Microsoft explicitly blames Motorola's patent litigation for the decision, saying it was otherwise happy with Arvato's services. Patentkrieg: Wichtiger Zwischenerfolg für Apple im Streit mit Motorola
Apple hat im Patentkrieg gegen Hersteller von Android-Smartphones einen möglicherweise entscheidenden Zwischenerfolg erreicht. Der mit einer Klage gegen Motorola Mobility befasste Richter eines US-Berufungsgerichts teilt zumindest Apples Auffassung zu einem Patent, das auch gegenüber anderen Herstellern entscheidend sein könnte.
Es geht in dem Streit mit Motorola unter anderem um ein Patent für eine “Touchscreen-Heuristik-Technologie”, die dem Betriebssystem dabei hilft, die Eingaben eines Benutzers zu interpretieren. Menschen können dem Gerät mit ihrem Finger keine absolut eindeutigen Befehle geben, da sie beispielsweise nicht in der Lage sind, eine komplett gerade Linie zu “zeichnen”. Kaleidescape DVD servers granted a temporary stay
Things have been looking bleak for Kaleidescape's DVD servers since a Judge ruled against them on appeal, and earlier this month issued an injunction that was to have taken effect on April 8th. We say was because CEO Michael Malcolm is now saying the California 6th District Court of Appeal has issued a temporary stay of that injunction. CSIRO settles with US carriers, PC makers over Wi-Fi patents
Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) settled its lawsuit over Wi-Fi patents on Monday. The deal with US carriers AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, as well as PC designers Acer, Lenovo, and Sony, was worth $220 million in local currency, or $229 million US. CSIRO hadn't ruled out more patent lawsuits, although it didn't file for patents in the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) area or the wider Latin America area.

Apple datacenter's fuel cells to be fully ready in November
Apple's upcoming fuel cell system for its Maiden, North Carolina datacenter should be ready just before the end of the year, according to new details. A filing mid-week at the North Carolina Utilities Commission has shown that the first fuel cell system will be ready in June, with all six up and running by November 30. Each of the systems, made by Bloom Energy, takes methane from animal byproducts and landfills, and combined should produce between 24 to 200 kilowatts across four individual fuel cells.

Ashton Kutcher claimed playing Steve Jobs in biopic
Despite the April Fools' Day timing, Variety has made serious claims on Sunday that Ashton Kutcher will play Steve Jobs in an independent movie. The Five Star Institute-produced title Jobs is expected to enter production in May, during Kutcher's break from Two and a Half Men. Tribune stations nationwide including WGN America go dark on DirecTV

Will TUAW skip its Talkcast tonight?
We meet again, Sunday. At least this one has been mildly entertaining in some respects (for example, the trimumphant return of the Apple Store Playset to ThinkGeek's front page and TUAW's honoring of Betteridge's Law for the day).
