Martin Jetpack hits the 5,000 feet milestone, could come to market within 18 months (video)
OK, so the Martin Jetpack may not have gone into commercial production quite as soon as we'd anticipated, but there's still hope on the horizon. Over the weekend, Glenn Martin's flying machine successfully climbed some 5,000 feet above sea level, marking a new milestone in the 30-year, $12 million project. Remotely controlled by a tailing helicopter, the 250-pound craft used its two "superfans" to power itself skyward at about 800 feet per second, before safely parachuting back to Earth from a height of about 3,000 feet. Android 3.1 update for ASUS Eee Pad Transformer leaks out
ASUS' official Android 3.1 update should be coming soon enough, but Eee Pad Transformer users that just can't wait now have another option at their disposal. Apple Store bald in Berlin
Bereits zuvor hatte man über mögliche Apple Stores in Berlin spekuliert, jedoch gibt es bisher immer noch keinen. Nun jedoch wurde das Erdgeschoss des Haus Wien am Kurfürstendamm 26 Apple-typisch schwarz abgeklebt - Eine Lokation, für die man bereits einen kommenden Apple Store vermutet hatte.Noch existieren aber, wie bei anderen zukünftigen Stores, keine Stellenanzeigen, was darauf schliessen lässt, dass dieser Store nicht allzu bald öffnen wird. Vermutlich wird der Store dann Ende 2011 bis Anfang 2012 in Betrieb genommen. Immobilienmakler „ahg.immobilien“ schreibt auf seiner Seite, dass etwa 5.000 m² „Top-Retailflächen in bester Lage“ komplett als Flagship-Store an Apple vermietet wurden. Funnel is a quick way to scan the Google News headlines. It has a simple interface. Sections are color coded, and the size of the headlines gives you a quick visual idea of the importance of the story based on the number of related articles.

This is the ASUS PadFone
Wow, so our theory and mockup turned out to be pretty much spot on: indeed, the oddly named ASUS PadFone does tuck itself into a shielded docking bay on the back of its companion tablet, and the latter's hinged cover appears to pop up upon releasing the latch. You can also just about make out the two ports inside, which are likely to be micro-USB and HDMI for driving the larger display, and we wouldn't be surprised if this involves an extra battery as well. Skype taken to task by angry users over claimed crapware payload
The Skype forums are a hive of panic and abuzz with accusations that either the company is bundling crapware with its VoIP app or has a serious security problem. Users are reporting that a strange, new, and difficult to uninstall program is finding its way on to their PCs called EasyBits GO. EasyBits is the company that has powered Skype's games channel since 2006, but at least until now its wares have not been standalone software. Metaphor recognition software aims to distinguish friend from foe
While it's only right that people be protected from bad poetry, this could be taking things a tad too far. Intelligence officials at the Office of Incisive Analysis (no, really) have determined that metaphors could be of vital significance to national security. By, well, incisively analyzing the way people use metaphors in everyday conversations, they believe they can reveal "underlying beliefs and world views" -- such as negative feelings towards a particular country. Now they're calling on civilian scientists and academics to help them do this automatically using pattern recognition and supercomputers.

OS X 10.6.8 hints readying Mac App Store for Lion upgrade
A third test build of Mac OS X 10.6.8 has surfaced this weekend and produced a discovery confirming Apple's plans to offer Lion through the Mac App Store. New notes added for the release mention that it's intended to "enhance" the store to "get your Mac ready to upgrade to Mac OS X Lion." It's unclear from Florian Schimanke's sighting what those changes might be.

A complete iPhone solution for reverse caller lookup
Number Guru gets you information when caller ID doesn't. This free iPhone app allows you to input any phone number and figure out who is calling you. It's particularly nice when you get spam telemarketer calls, because the app has some crowdsourcing features that can provide more information than just a company name.
The app covers 100 percent of listed US landlines and about half of US cellular numbers. The app will also identify the carrier the call came through, although it can get confused over ported numbers. I saw that myself, because I'm on AT&T after originally being on Verizon, and Number Guru misidentified my carrier. Verizon doesn't supply any caller information, so a Verizon call won't be identified.

Treebot climbs trees, is a robot (video)
Remember when you didn't consider climbing trees a chore? Treebot doesn't -- but then, it wasn't programmed to know boredom. The robot was designed by a team at The Chinese University of Hong Kong for the express purpose of shimmying up trees autonomously, figuring out the best route up a trunk using built-in touch sensors. The 'bot's body is designed like an inchworm, expanding and contracting as it works it way up -- unlike other climbers we've seen. President Obama is on a European tour, and one of his stops included Poland. Consumer PC sales growth declines for first time ever: iPad the culprit?
Business Insider has posted a chart that tracks consumer PC growth from June of 2007 to March of 2011. According to the chart consumer PC sales have grown by at least 10 percent every quarter, until December 2010 when it remained flat. In the quarter ending March 2011, consumer PC sales actually went down 4 percent.

Teuerste Kamera der Welt: Leica von 1923 erzielt an Auktion 1.320.000 Euro (Video)

Das Wiener Auktionshaus WestLicht hat eine 0-Serien Leica - die Nummer 7 von 25 Testkameras aus dem Jahre 1923 - für den Rekordbetrag von über 1,3 Millionen Euro versteigert. Es ist die einzige 0-Serien-Kamera mit Germany-Gravur und die erste Leica überhaupt, die für den Export bestimmt war. Exakt dieselbe Kamera wechselte übrigens 2007 bei WestLicht für vergleichsweise bescheidene 336 000 Euro schon einmal den Besitzer. Im Rechtsstreit um die von Samsung angeblich abgekupferten Apple-Geräte haben laut This is my next Samsungs Anwälte am Freitag das Gericht aufgefordert, Apple anzuweisen, ihnen die beiden bisher noch nicht angekündigten Produkte iPhone 5 und iPad 3 zu zeigen. Begründung: Sie müssten vorzeitig Kenntnis davon haben, wie Apples Produkte aussehen werden, um zukünftige Klagen und frappierende Ähnlichkeiten zu vermeiden. Here's a big case of "Good luck with that." Samsung's lawyers are demanding to see the iPhone 5 and iPad 3, according to ThisIsMyNext. Samsung says it needs to see Apple's upcoming devices because its iPhone and iPad competitors, the Droid Charge and Galaxy Tab 10.1, will likely be on sale around the same time. Google preps iPhone search website revamp with app drawer
Google is reportedly preparing a large tweak to its iPhone-optimized search page that would put it much closer in line with the quality of the native mobile app. A discovery on Saturday has shown a version with tabs on top that, when expanded with "more," reveal two distinct drawers of features. We know we're opening a can of worms that can never be resealed here, but it's true: we're desperate to know how you'd change HTC's Thunderbolt if given the chance.
