Nuance-like Apple speech recognition patent emerges

Rumors have been flying that Apple has entered into some kind of agreement with speech recognition company Nuance. Now Patently Apple has published an Apple patent that shows a possible use for Nuance's technology in the iPhone. The patent covers text-to-speech and speech-to-text conversion. In the patent, Apple lists two ways it might be hard for someone to answer their phone in the usual way: communicating in noisy environments and being unable to communicate during a meeting. Apple veröffentlicht Lion Developer Preview 3, Xcode 4.1 Preview 5 und Mac OS X 10.6.8 Build 1

Apple hat heute wieder einmal einige Updates auf einmal veröffentlicht. Los ging es mit der neusten Entwickler-Vorschau von Lion, welches mit der Softwareaktualisierung für aktuelle Lion-Rechner ausgeliefert wird. Vorherige Updates müssen dazu bereits installiert sein. Neu in diesem Update sind unter anderem ein neuer Login-Screen, die bereits früher gezeigte Reading List, einige neue Wallpapers und andere kleinere Änderungen. Seagate GoFlex Satellite to carry own battery, iOS streaming

Seagate's plans for a rare truly cable-free hard drive were uncovered through an FCC filing this week. Its GoFlex Satellite would have not just 802.11n Wi-Fi to serve storage on the local network but would have its own battery to operate completely cable-free for hours. An iOS app, GoFlex Media, would let iPad, iPhone, and iPod owners stream music or videos directly from the drive, presumably as a way of giving access to a much larger media library while travelling.

Apple-Nuance deal confirmed through Mac OS X Lion voices

Apple's rumored pact with Nuance was given confirmation Saturday after an exploration found Nuance's voices in the new Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 3. Many of the voices added to Lion's text-to-speech conversion, such as "Moira" or "Sangeeta," are lifted directly from Nuance's RealSpeak Solo, Netputing found. Apple offering free repairs to quake-damaged Macs

Apple is continuing to offer free repairs for Mac and other Apple equipment damaged by the earthquake and tsunami that ravaged large parts of eastern Japan. Lockitron allows doors to be unlocked via iPhone

Apigy has introduced the Lockitron, a combination hardware and app kit that replaces the lock on your door with an internet-ready version that allows users to lock and unlock their doors using their iPhone (and eventually other smartphones), even remotely. While utilizing a traditional key and keyfob system for backup, the system also offers an option where users can text or email a "virtual key" code to others who need to enter the house, enabling them to use the system as well. Publishers of ebooks are meeting this week at the World e-Reading Congress, and a site called the Bookseller has an interesting writeup of one of the issues being discussed there: Whether the book market can compete with, of all things, Angry Birds. Dropbox faces possible FTC investigation over security

Dropbox has had a complaint (PDF) filed against it with the FTC by a well-known security researcher. The cloud-based file storage site, which recently clocked up 25 million users, is alleged to be falsely advertising the security of its services. New Yorker magazine adds custom feed to Flipboard

Flipboard, the popular digest-style feed reader for the iPad, has added the prestigious magazine The New Yorker to its list of publishers. Partial and complete articles, a selection of cartoon and images and other highlights from the full print or digital edition -- the latter of which is available in full as its own app on the App Store -- are available to Flipboard readers by simply adding the magazine to their section list. The articles are specially re-formatted for viewing through Flipboard, but content much of the same content found on the magazine's web site.

Dell teases XPS 15Z with heavy MacBook Pro cues

Dell in a new Facebook teaser on Friday gave clues to its new ultrathin notebook and raised serious concerns about its originality. Without giving clues as to features, it showed the XPS 15Z, a 'thin, powerful, intuitive' shape which borrowed very heavily from Apple's unibody MacBook Pro. The design shares the same all-silver frame and black bezel, patterned speaker grills on either side of a chiclet keyboard, and even a five-dot, button-activated battery indicator.

iPhone 4 sets Guinness records for game handheld sales

Guinness World Records upturned expectations late Thursday by giving Apple three records for gaming. Lodsys warns iOS devs, alleges in-app purchases infringe its patent

A handful of iOS developers received letters this week from a patent holding firm claiming that their applications that offer in-app purchases infringe on the firm's intellectual property (IP). The letter threatens legal action if developers don't license the patent within 21 days. Lodsys, the firm in question, has apparently patented a system that collects usage data and facilitates feedback between a customer and vendor, though it doesn't address financial transactions specifically. The allegedly infringing applications use Apple's in-app purchase tool to encourage users to upgrade to a paid version after downloading a free app. Though it's possible that Lodsys has sent a similar warning to Apple, only individual developers

Apple rolls out first Mac OS X 10.6.8 developer seed

Apple is seeding the first developer release of Mac OS X 10.6.8, accounts say. The build is listed as 10K521, although details about its contents have yet to emerge. Mac OS X 10.6.7 was released in late March; at the time it made numerous fixes, dealing with components like graphics rendering and Back to My Mac.
