Displayflackern beim neuen MacBook Pro soll mit Mac OS X 10.6.7 behoben sein
Nachdem wir bereits gestern über gelegentliches Flackern über Thunderbolt angeschlossenen Cinema Displays berichtet hatten, kommt heute die Meldung, dass das Systemupdate auf OS X 10.6.7 dieses Flackern beheben soll.So erhält man auf den neuen MacBooks ein anderes Systemupdate, welches die Grafikprobleme explizit adressiert, allerdings scheinen die vorhin aufgetauchten Stabilitätsprobleme, bei denen das ganze System manchmal komplett einfriert, noch nicht behandelt zu sein.Aussagen eines Support-Angestellten zufolge soll aber auch dafür e

Distimo finds higher prices, slower growth in the Mac App Store
Distimo has released its latest publication, containing an overview of the various app stores currently running, and the findings about the Mac App Store are quite interesting. Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 specs and Honeycomb UI tweaks leak out before its official launch
You didn't have any doubt that Samsung was going to bring its new Galaxy Tab 8.9 to CTIA, did you? Well, this thing is definitely coming very soon. We snuck onto the show floor this afternoon, and while we didn't find the actual tablet, there was a serious amount of Galaxy Tab 8.9 signage. We couldn't get a close look at the placards, but the guys at PocketNow had better luck. Recovery tool Disk Drill updated to version 1.2
Developer Cleverfiles has released what it calls the first "official" version of its data-recovery and file-protection software Disk Drill -- version 1.2 -- which recovers damaged and deleted data from hard drives, memory cards, iPods and other devices as well as protecting files with its Recovery Vault technology. The program is offered in free and pro editions for consumers, with two other editions aimed at business and enterprise customers.

Security Update 2011-001 für Leopard verfügbar
Nachdem vor wenigen Stunden Mac OS X 10.6.7 veröffentlicht wurde, hat Apple jetzt auch einen kleinen Security-Patch für 10.5.8 und aufwärts veröffentlicht.Das "Security Update 2011-001" ist bereits in 10.6.7 integriert und muss somit nicht installiert werden. Is your Thunderbolt having LTE mobile hotspot problems?
We'd been excited to use our HTC Thunderbolts as integral parts of our show setup here at CTIA this week -- only thing is, the mobile hotspot capability is kind of important if we're going to make that happen. On one occasion while reviewing the device last week, we noticed that the phone's radio was cycling between LTE and CDMA-only coverage, dropping the data connection to the tethered devices altogether each and every time, effectively rendering the hotspot capability useless -- thing is, we only saw it happen once. Sprint concerned over AT&T, T-Mobile merger
Sprint responded to the announcement of the acquisition of T-Mobile by AT&T with a statement that expresses concern about the proposed merger. Sprint suggests federal regulators take a close look at the deal which will dramatically change the structure of the wireless industry in the U.S.
The now #3 wireless carrier in the U.S. points out that a post-merger AT&T and Verizon will control almost 80% of the wireless post-paid market and will set both the price and availability of valuable assets such as backhaul capacity and wireless access which the smaller carriers need to compete. Weniger Fehler und mehr Sicherheit für Snow LeopardApple hat soeben ein Update für Mac OS X Snow Leopard freigegeben. Version 10.6.7 steht über die eingebaute Software-Aktualisierung des Mac zur Verfügung, oder lässt sich als separates Delta-Update (450MB) oder Combo-Update (1.12GB) herunterladen. Firefox 4 slips out ahead of tomorrow's official release
The official launch day may still be tomorrow, but those not willing to wait can now grab the final version of Firefox 4 for Windows, Mac OS X or Linux straight from Mozilla's FTP server. That follows a last minute RC2 revision that was just released on Saturday, which has presumably been all but unchanged for the now final version. Mac OS X 10.6.7 soeben erschienen
Vor wenigen Minuten ist das offizielle Update auf Mac OS X 10.6.7 veröffentlicht worden. Nachdem noch in der vergangenen Woche die letzte Beta-Version mit dem Build 10J868 veröffentlicht worden war, scheinen nun endgültig alle Probleme behoben.
Mac OS X 10.6.7 ist ab sofort über die Software-Aktualisierung verfügbar und bringt die auf dem Screenshot erkennbaren Neuerungen.

Apple posts Mac OS X 10.6.7, security updates
Apple has flooded its support website with a host of software updates, most prominently Mac OS X 10.6.7. The patch is available in client and server versions; the former is described as making "general operating system fixes" targeting stability, security and compatibility. In particular though it should improve the reliability of Back to My Mac, and quash several bugs in the Mac App Store, as well as an issue affecting file transfers to SMB servers.

Report: Wife says no, Apple says yes to iPad 2
The folks over at MacRumors heard a story that's unsourced and most likely apocryphal, but it's just too good to not share. According to "an individual close to Apple," the company in Cupertino has been going over iPad 2 returns to keep track of various problems with the new tablet, and among the returns was one affixed with just a little Post-it note saying something every would-be early tech adopter husband will probably understand: "Wife says no."
Supposedly, the return was sent up the corporate lines as something funny, and as MacRumors says, "two of the VPs got wind of it." They decided to do something nice for the guy, and reportedly sent him out a free iPad 2, along with their own note:

Cobra Tag Bluetooth key tagging system to ship in July, iRadar and PhoneLynx coming to Android

After an initial delay, Mozilla's Firefox 4 final has been made available one day early. The browser can be downloaded for Mac or Windows systems now. Whether Mozilla had something to do with the early release isn't known at this point but unlikely as the software is not yet on Mozilla's site.

Intel's ultramobile head leaves abruptly in likely shakeup
Intel in a surprise update said Monday that its Ultra Mobility Group lead Anand Chandrasekher was leaving the company. It would say only that he was leaving to "pursue other interests" after a 24-year career at the chip designer. Two vice presidents from the Intel Architecture Group, Mike Bell and Dave Whalen, would jointly take Chandrasekher's place effective immediately.

Apple releases OS X 10.6.7 with fix for MacBook Pro display issues
It may be a minor update for most, but those with a brand new MacBook Pro will no doubt find the just-released OS X 10.6.7 particularly welcome. Boxee to update Box browser, release streaming app for iPad
Boxee has announced details surrounding an upcoming iPad app, along with an update to the software that runs on the company's set-top box. In a TechWebcast podcast, Boxee marketing VP Andrew Kippen confirmed earlier rumors that pointed to a new tablet app in the works. Although the company already offers a remote control app, the new utility, which is said to only work with the iPad 2, will allow users to stream content to a TV via AirPlay or view previews of items that are being watched by friends.

Mac OS X 10.6.7 available in Software Update
We've been anticipating the release of Mac OS X 10.6.7 for several weeks, and the update has finally dropped.
As you can see from the notes above, one of the major improvements is to Back to my Mac, which has been seemingly neglected for the last several updates. Mac users in Windows-centric offices will be happy with the SMB file transfer fix, and several Mac App Store bugs have been resolved as well.

Welcome to the CTIA 2011 show floor where the booths are guarded and all the products are kept under lock and key! Oh yes, it's pretty impossible to see what's going to be unveiled here tomorrow when the doors officially open, but we did spot this lovely digital sign at LG's booth of the T-Mobile G2x. Microsoft sues Barnes & Noble, Foxconn to silence Android
Microsoft hoped to further stifle competition from Android on Monday with a lawsuit targeting non-traditional sources. Following its belief that every Android device maker owes royalties, it sued Barnes & Noble and its manufacturers Foxconn and Inventec for allegedly infringing on patent rights through its Android-based Nook e-readers. It had unsuccessfully tried to negotiate a deal for more than a year and had "no choice" but to "defend our innovations and fulfill our responsibility," Deputy General Counsel Horacio Gutierrez claimed.

iPhone 5 may get NFC through Qualcomm, Windows Phone 7 too
Swirling rumors of NFC in the iPhone 5 were fueled on Monday by fresh tips that also Windows Phone 7 plans. Two sources said the near-field wireless would be built into the Qualcomm cellular processor for either the 2011 update or its successor. Tello calls for $25.27 billion in revenue for Apple Q2
Apple will likely post approximately $25.27 billion in revenue at the end of its second fiscal quarter, which ends Saturday, argues investment blogger Daniel Tello. Nokia still uncertain on Windows for tablets
Despite its recent agreement with Microsoft to use Windows Phone in future smartphones, Nokia is not sure what OS it will use for its upcoming tablets. Use TextExpander and Twitterrific to avoid Twitter spam
If you post to Twitter and say the word "iPhone" or "iPad" you are likely to get hit with one of the rash of Twitter spammers who search through Twitter for people who post about those terms and @reply to them with some "deal" (usually offering you a chance to "win" a "free" iPad or iPhone).
I have been trying to remember to not say those words on Twitter, or to spell them differently, such as "iPxd" or "iPhxne" or using "lookalike" characters such as "¡Phone" (that's an inverted "!" instead of an "i") but I keep forgetting, and every time I do wham! more spam.

Motorola Xoom WiFi hitting Canada next month
There's still no word on a price or exact release date, but Motorola has just confirmed that the WiFi-only version of its Xoom Honeycomb tablet will be available in Canada sometime in April -- or "early April," according to the Financial Post. See that greenish blue thing up there? That might look like this greenish blue thing over here that we reviewed a few weeks back, but actually they're not the same. No, sir. This thing up there is the genuine, guaranteed, red-blooded American version, ready to tear a $250 hole in your gaming budget and make you go all googly-eyed for 3D. Naturally there isn't an awful lot different here compared to the Japanese version we already looked at, but we have had the opportunity to spend a good bit more quality time with this one than with the other one. Boxee 1.5 bringing 'huge browser update' by end of March
There's still not a ton of specifics on this one just yet, but Boxee's VP of Marketing, Andrew Kippen, has confirmed on the TechWebcast podcast that the Boxee 1.5 update will be rolling out by the end of the March -- which, last we checked, wasn't that far away. Supreme Court won't rule on Eminem's iTunes case
The US Supreme Court on Monday declined to rule on a Universal Music Group appeal of Eminem's digital royalty win. Its gesture upheld a Uinth Circuit Court of Appeals decision that said Eminem's contract with FBT Productions entitled him to a 50 percent cut of any digital sales, including iTunes and Amazon MP3. Universal had argued that it could give him the same 12 percent as with CD sales.

New MacBook Pros freezing under heavy load?
Apple may have dodged the big Sandy Bridge problem with its new MacBook Pros, but it looks like it may now be experiencing some growing pains of an another sort. Over 94,000 people have so far signed a petition to remove an anti-gay app from the App Store, a check shows. The software belongs to a group called Exodus International, which claims it can use Christianity to help change someone's sexual orientation. iOS 4.3.1 coming soon, will patch jailbreak vulnerability
iOS 4.3 has only been available for about two weeks, having been originally released on March 9th just prior to the introduction of the iPad 2. While relatively few issues have been reported with the new OS version, BGR suggests that iOS 4.3.1 is expected to arrive in the next one to two weeks.

AT&T to use T-Mobile spectrum for LTE, move 3G to its bands
AT&T in its T-Mobile buyout presentation made clear plans to shift T-Mobile's spectrum if the deal is approved. It would move T-Mobile devices away from 1,700MHz 3G and towards its own 850MHz and 1,900MHz bands, freeing up the 1,700MHz space for LTE. 2011 MacBook Pros reportedly crashing under heavy loads
Last week we reported that the new Intel Sandy Bridge-based early 2011 MacBook Pros are experiencing issues with iTunes Home Sharing. Now it appears that the top-of-the-line MacBooks are also having issues when users are trying to put the new processor to the test.
When operated under heavy load conditions, such as compiling code, running a virtual machine, or rendering 3D images, the machines operate at very high temperatures and then lock up. Schweden: Polizei entdeckt DIY-Schrotflinte in E-Gitarre

Einen ungewönlichen Fund machte die schwedische Polizei in Lulea, einem Ort in Nordschweden. Sie bekam einen Hinweis, dass ein dort ansässiger 54-Jähriger Waffen besitzen würde. So wurden die Beamten auch fündig und beschlagnahmten diverse Schusswaffen im Haus des Verdächtigen. Besonders interessant war hingegen die E-Gitarre, die an einer Wand des Hauses hing. Nach genauerer Untersuchung stellte sich heraus, dass die Klampfe eine umgebaute Schrotkanone mit zwei Läufen ist. Das Musikinstrument sei ein Spaßprojekt des Mannes gewesen und noch nicht fertig und somit nicht schussbereit. Auf die Idee muss man dennoch erstmal kommen.

Google fixes Flash exploit in Chrome itself ahead of Adobe
A critical bug in Adobe Flash Player that leaves users vulnerable to hacker attacks has been addressed by Google for its Chrome browser. Other browsers won't get a fix until Adobe releases one, however, says UK daily The Guardian. Adobe needs to test its fix on nearly 60 platforms but it should release the update this week. T-Mobile posted a quick FAQ on its website regarding the recently announced merger with AT&T. The biggest question for Apple fans on T-Mobile is whether the AT&T iPhone will be available to current T-Mobile customers. Unfortunately, the answer is a resounding "No." Under the acquisition agreement, T-Mobile will continue to operate as an independent company and will offer phones like the Samsung Galaxy S 4G and the Sidekick 4G, not the iPhone. Sprint Nexus S 4G official with Google Voice integration
Sprint and Google today confirmed the existence of the Nexus S 4G as well as a special collaboration on Google Voice. The phone still has an unaltered Android 2.3 that promises speedy updates but adds faster WiMAX. Google Voice also now effectively takes over, Google said: users can run their actual Sprint phone number as a Google Voice number to reach multiple phones at once, and any calls or text messages sent from Gmail on the web will show the Sprint number.

Ive not planning to return to UK, report claims
Jonathan Ive is not preparing to leave the US to return to his native Britain, claims British tabloid the Daily Mail. The Times of London recently suggested that Ive, Apple's lead designer, was interested in having his children educated in the UK, to the point of possibly exercising stock options and/or leaving the company in order to make it happen. A 2008 stock grant was likened to "golden handcuffs," and Ive has allegedly been at "loggerheads" with Apple trying to come up with a new arrangement.

Microsofts "Zukunft des PC Games" macht Leute stutzig

Microsoft will scheinbar den Sektor PC-Games immer mehr wie eine Art Xbox Live werden lassen. Das zumindest sagt dieses Video über die Zukunft des PC Gamings, das für interne Firmenzwecke produziert wurde. Es stammt aus dem letzten Jahr und ist wie gesagt nicht zu Promozwecken gedacht gewesen. Die Community findet diesen Weg Richtung geschlossenes System mit Social Media-Anbindung und weiterem Bla aber scheinbar alles andere als amusing. A Dell or something?" one asked. Another said, "I find it strange that your answer is to buy another product from the company that is causing you so much pain. Google patches Flash vulnerability in Chrome, leaves other browsers hanging
Remember that massive security vulnerability that Adobe identified in its Flash Player, Acrobat and Reader software? Well, shockingly enough, it hasn't yet taken over the internet and ground productivity to a halt, but Google's been proactive about it and patched the flaw by itself. Of course, the fix applies only on its own Chrome web browser, Firefoxes and Internet Explorer types will have to wait for Adobe's fix, which is expected any minute now. Still, it's good to know someone's looking out for the security of our data, even if that someone already has most of it anyway.

Bildhauerkunst: Xbox aus Holz

Ben Winfield ist ein Bildhauer und Holzkünstler. Ob diese Skulptur nun Kunst oder nicht ist, entscheiden zwar am Ende die, die das nötige Kleingeld dazu haben. Eine derart filigran ausgearbeitete Xbox ist aber einen näheren Blick dennoch auf jeden Fall wert. Hierbei handelt es sich um keinen Mod, das Ding ist also nicht wirklich spielbar. Aber vielleicht macht auch gerade das den Reiz aus.

Bitkom: Zahl der Handy-Internetzugänge in einem Jahr verdoppelt
In Deutschland geht fast jeder fünfte Internetnutzer (18 Prozent) per Mobiltelefon online. Vor einem Jahr waren es nur 10 Prozent. Confirmed: AT&T wants to use T-Mobile's AWS spectrum for LTE buildout
Flipping through the slide deck accompanying a hastily-arranged press conference this morning to talk up AT&T's planned acquisition of T-Mobile USA, it's now clear that the company is interested in augmenting its 700MHz LTE spectrum with T-Mobile's 1700MHz AWS airwaves -- a move that it says would help it deploy LTE to 95 percent of the American population. AWS is currently used by T-Mobile for its 3G services, but running LTE there isn't without precedent -- that's where MetroPCS is already set up, so there's some potential for consumer hardware and infrastructure synergy there.

TUAW's Daily App: Land-a Panda
Land-a Panda has been tearing up the App Store charts lately, and for good reason. It's a fun mix of platformer and physics puzzler that has you catapulting a panda through a series of levels in order to try and get him to his beloved mate.
There's even a little Cut the Rope influence here. Your panda gets launched from a seesaw to start the level, and from there, he is fired from cannon to cannon to the other side of the map. Sometimes you have to time your launch just right, other times you can rotate the cannons around to line up your shot, and there are lots of other obstacles and mechanics that pop up later in the game.
Land-a Panda is a lot of fun, and there's a ton of content to go through as well. T

As we use our iOS device cameras more and more, we get interested in squeezing out better performance from the built-in camera.
That's where QuickCam comes in. It's a US$0.99 app (introductory sale price) that works on the iPhone and the iPad, and the name says it all. QuickCam is really, really quick. In my tests, the app started about a second faster than the stock iPhone camera. Most important for some users, it has a burst mode, where it will fire off a series of pictures very quickly. While we've yet to see other Honeycomb tablets materialize in the shops after the Xoom, news has it that ASUS is about to debut its Eee Pad Transformer back in its home country this Friday. Capturing iPad video on a Mac is still problematic
When TUAW blogger Erica Sadun and I found out that the iPad 2 was going to feature video mirroring through the various adapters that Apple and others sell, we were ecstatic. For Erica, this would hopefully provide a quick way to capture movies of demonstrations of some of her software solutions, while I was hoping to be able to grab iPad video on my Mac for the many app demos that I do on TUAW TV Live.

Intel failed to poach HP PC head for exec spot
Intel tried unsuccessfully to grab one of the cornerstone executives of HP's computer business, sources said early Monday. The chip designer had reportedly been looking to get Todd Bradley, HP's Executive VP for the Personal Systems Group that covers the PC business, for a "senior position" at Intel. The WSJ hadn't learned what that position was but understood Bradley had turned it down earlier in March.

Sprint complains of antitrust risk; T-Mobile out of keynote
Sprint and T-Mobile late Sunday quickly issued formal reactions to the AT&T buyout of T-Mobile. As expected, Sprint objected to the $39 billion deal and said it would "alter dramatically" the US cellular landscape. Sprint critiques proposed AT&T / T-Mobile deal, says buyout would 'dramatically alter' telecom industry
This afternoon, AT&T and T-Mobile dedicated a twenty-eight page PDF to convincing regulators that their $39 billion aquisition wouldn't violate antitrust law, using images like the one above. Well, as you can imagine, Sprint had something to say about that, and you can read it immediately below.

Incase Convertible Magazine Jacket for iPad review: Smart Cover without the iPad 2
I cannot imagine using my iPad without a case. It's not that I'm paranoid about protecting it so much as I just find it very difficult to type on without some sort of prop. Perhaps I how I use my iPad is unusual: I draft blog posts on it, use it to keep notes in meetings, and use it a lot in the kitchen for recipe display. Since I first bought the official Apple case mere days after getting the iPad I haven't used my iPad naked for more than a few hours without missing the ability to stand it up.
The official case was (rarely for Apple) both highly practical and incredibly ugly. The seam around the edge might have helped with impact absorption but it also made the iPad feel like a cheap novelty. Over the last year of iPad ownership, I've looked at multiple options, but have never found one

Leaks: Sprint had assumed it would get T-Mobile

T-Mobile answers its customers' most Frequently Asked Question: no iPhone
Never mind the practicalities of T-Mobile and AT&T using different 3G bands, Apple not having approved any deal for extended distribution of its phone, or the fact AT&T's acquisition of T-Mobile isn't set to complete for another year. The immediate reaction to AT&T agreeing to buy T-Mobile USA was to ask, "so that means the iPhone's coming to T-Mo, right?" Well, wrong. T-Mobile in an FAQ quickly talked down any immediate plans to carry the iPhone following the takeover by AT&T.
