Apple Retail's Effort to Boost Share of U.S. iPhone Sales Starts Paying Dividends
Over the course of the last several months, Apple has improved its in-store iPhone sales, according to a new survey from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (via AllThingsD). Approximately 25 percent of iPhones are purchased within an Apple Store, up from an estimate of 20 percent earlier this year. The majority of iPhones in the United States are still sold through carriers, however, with AT&T responsible for 21 percent of sales and Verizon responsible for 18 percent. Best Buy's iPhone sales accounted for 13 percent of total sales, and Sprint, Amazon, and other mass retailers like Target, Walmart, and Costco accounted for 5 percent each.

News: Apple and Danish company collaborate on hearing aid
Apple collaborated with Danish company GN Store Nord in developing the company’s new hearing aid, Reuters reports. The ReSound LiNX hearing aid was first announced in late October by GN Store Nord. Billed as the world’s first MFi hearing aid, the device uses Bluetooth-like technology to stream voice and music from iPhones without using an intermediary device. EU hoping to close off corporate tax loopholes utilized by Apple and others
To say that Apple's off-shore tax practices came under scrutiny in 2013 would be an extreme understatement. Though the tax minimization schemes Apple employs overseas are no different than those used by other multinational corporations, the spotlight in typical fashion seemed to shine exclusively on Apple.
That being said, Reuters is reporting that the EU is taking a closer look at how U.S. corporations like Apple use what can sometimes be a complex maze of subsidiaries to reduce their overall tax liability.

Spotify Connect local streaming comes to Android
A couple of months ago, Spotify Connect was announced for iOS -- a feature that allows you to wirelessly control (via your home WiFi network) music playing on Connect-compatible speakers with your phone. Xbox One SmartGlass vs. PlayStation App: Battle of the second screens
In the past two weeks the gaming world got a jolt of life in the form of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and while the previous game console generation was all about motion controls, it's clear that the new machines will use second screen functionality and apps as major weapons of war. Both Microsoft and Sony launched iOS apps ahead of their respective console debuts, and I've spent a great deal of time with both of them.
These apps are bound to change a lot as we move further into the current console battle, but since both company are trumpeting the apps as selling points for their hardware, I'll do my best to break down the pros and cons of each and declare a winner.

Fixes coming for Skype Messaging on Windows Phone; improved device syncing also in the works
If you've used Skype on Windows Phone, chances are you've dealt with out-of-sync and missed messages. Luckily, a fix is on the horizon: according to Skype product manager Jeff Kunins, who spoke with The Verge, Microsoft is aware of the issues and working to resolve them. Part of the problem, it seems, stems from Microsoft's move from peer-to-peer networks for Skype to cloud-based servers.

Beyond Television: How Apple Could Incorporate PrimeSense Technology Into Its Products
While PrimeSense, Apple's latest acquisition, is best known for developing the chip powering Microsoft's original Kinect motion-sensing gaming system, its 3D sensors have also been used in several industries beyond television and gaming. First Look: Belkin LEGO Builder Case for iPad mini
Following an iPhone 5/5s version, Belkin has released LEGO Builder Case for iPad mini ($60). The base is similar, with a bright yellow shell, and a blue LEGO plate on the back -- obviously larger here. Instead of red rubber around the edges though, there's a built-in lid, which works a lot like Apple's iPad mini Smart Cover. The larger playing surface, with a 20 by 12 array of knobs, strikes us as an even cooler solution here.

First Look: Candywirez Lightning Sync and Charge Cable
Lightning cables are all pretty much the same, but once in a while, designs will stand out and may, for some people, justify spending a few more dollars. Candywirez' Lightning Sync and Charge Cable ($26) may just be that for certain users. 3D Systems Sense review: a 3D scanner for the masses (almost)
If we've crossed paths in the past week, there's a pretty good chance I've scanned you. This extends well beyond the human race, into the realms of animal, vegetable, plush toy and fruit bowl. Some subjects were too small to be scanned, some too fidgety and, in the case of my attempted 3D selfie, not nearly flexible enough. HTC One Google Play Edition erhält Android 4.4

Everyone's in a tizzy about the "new" console generation, conveniently forgetting that, market-wise, it was already here a year ago with the release of Nintendo's Wii U. It isn't as advanced technologically as the new Sony's PlayStation and Microsoft's Xbox One, but the Wii U's like the kid who still likes Ninja Turtles when everyone's moved on to Power Rangers: They might not be as cool, but they're still your classmate, and they're still going to graduate with everyone else. Late last week, we highlighted a pair of Apple patent applications offering details on the company's implementation of its "Touch ID" fingerprint sensor in the iPhone 5s. Another Apple supplier faces criticism over labor conditions in China
A manufacturer of glass coverings for Apple is drawing accusations of worker exploitation from Hong Kong labor groups concerned with several employee suicides at its factory in China.Hong Kong-based Biel Crystal Manufactory Limited is a listed suppler for Apple, and produces protective glass coverings used on mobile phones. The company's factory in Huizhou, China, however, has been the site of "numerous labor abuses", according to a report from Students and Scholars Against Corporate Misbehavior (SACOM).Employing about 40,000 workers, the factory produces glass coverings mainly for Apple, but also counts Samsung as a client. To be hired, employees at the factory are allegedly required to sign an application asking for voluntary overtime. Denmark company collaborates with Apple on hearing aid tech
One reason why I love Apple is that the Cupertino company doesn't innovate just for the sake of innovation. It pushes the envelope on technology to make life better. An excellent example is this upcoming iPhone-compatible hearing aid from Denmarks's GN Store Nord.
As reported by Reuters, this new hearing aid is a collaborative effort between Apple and GN, the world's fourth largest hearing aid maker. A quick look back at Apple's dividend history
While Apple during the Steve Jobs era wasn't too keen on doling out dividends, Tim Cook has taken steps to return boatloads of money back to shareholders. This past April, Apple more than doubled its capital return program when it increased its quarterly dividend of $2.65 by 15% and authorized the repurchase of $60 billion worth of outstanding shares.
As it stands today, Apple's current quarterly dividend is $3.05. By way of contrast, Microsoft's quarterly dividend checks in at $0.28. Financially speaking, Apple is unquestionably sitting pretty.

Apple announces its Black Friday online and in-store sale event
Right on time, Apple has confirmed that it will be holding its annual Black Friday sale again this year. Pricing hasn't been announced, but deals are usually modest with US$100 off Mac purchases and $40 off iPads.

Apples Deal mit China Mobile am 18. Dezember?
Der weltgrösste Mobilfunkprovider China Mobile wird anlässlich der «4G global partners conference» am 18. Dezember eine Marke vorstellen, die neu ins Sortiment des Unternehmens aufgenommen wird. Dies bestätigte der Provider gegenüber dem Wall Street Journal. Dieser Bericht sorgte sofort für Spekulationen rund um eine mögliche Zusammenarbeit zwischen Apple und China Mobile. Bislang wird das iPhone nicht über die Geschäfte von China Mobile vertrieben. Gerüchten zufolge wollte sich das Unternehmen in der Vergangenheit nicht den von Apple diktierten Verkaufsbedingungen fügen. Apple II donated by Steve Jobs to a nonprofit returns to the Jobs family
The New York Times last week ran a story recounting how an Apple II computer Steve Jobs once donated to the Seva Foundation was finally returned back to Laurene Powell Jobs.
What makes this story so interesting is that the Apple II, which was donated back in the late 70s, spent much of the last three decades simply sitting in a basement in Katmandu, Nepal. Nonetheless, the article provides an interesting context to the donation and Jobs' efforts to help out the then-fledgling non-profit organization.

Review: Video Recorder with 30X zoom for iOS
As most iOS photo enthusiasts know, none of the Apple iOS devices have an optical zoom. Several apps provide a digital zoom, but zooming simply blows up the picture, making the pixels larger. The result, is a pretty crummy looking larger version of what you'd see with no zoom. A new app, called Video Recorder with 30X Zoom attempts to beat that problem, but not very successfully.
The app is universal, and sells for U.S. $1.99. It works for video or stills, and claims to be the best zoom app around. That may be, but it still falls short of what most photographers will expect.

China bekommt LTE kurz vor Weihnachten

Bereits seit September, heißt es, dass in China der aktuelle Mobilstandard 4G/LTE eingeführt werden soll. Nun hat die staatliche Nachrichtenagentur Xinhua bestätigt, dass erstmalig zum 18. Dezember in den Städten Beijing, Guangzhou und Chonquing LTE über den Provider China Mobile 4G ausgerollt wird. In Metropolen wie Shanghai müsse das Netz noch ausgebaut werden. Die anderen großen Telkos China Unicom und China Telecom werden in naher Zukunft ebenfalls 4G anbieten.

Jony Ive and Marc Newson curated Project (RED) auction a huge success; Mac Pro fetches $977,000 while Leica M camera nets $1.8 million bid
This past Saturday, Soetheby's held their long anticipated auction that saw folks with extremely deep pockets bid on a selection of items curated, and in some cases designed, by famed designers Jony Ive and Marc Newson. The auction was held to benefit Bono's Project (RED) charity and all proceeds will be donated to The Global Fund to fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
By the time the auction ended on Saturday, the winning bids were leaps and bounds higher than what anybody could have anticipated. For instance, one of the items up on the auction block was a one-of-a-kind red Mac Pro. It was initially expected to fetch upwards of $60,000. The actual winning bid checked in at a whopping $977,000.

Wohltätigkeits-Auktion von Jony Ive und Marc Newson: Neuer Mac Pro erzielt Spitzenpreis
Das Auktionshaus Sotheby’s hat am Samstag Unikate versteigert, die im Rahmen von «Jony and Marc’s (RED) Auction» gestaltet worden sind. Insgesamt wurde mit der Versteigerung der 44 individuell gestalteten Objekte ein Erlös von 12.883 Millionen US-Dollar erzielt. Dies ist deutlich mehr, als die Auktionatoren vor der Auktion erwartet hatten. Der Erlös der 44 versteigerten Objekte wird für die Bekämpfung von AIDS, Tuberkulose und Malaria in Afrika eingesetzt.
Eines der auffälligsten Objekte der gesamten Auktion war der rote Mac Pro. Jonathan Ive und Marc Newson haben den neuen Mac Pro ausgewählt und für die Auktion individualisiert. Es handelt sich dabei um den einzigen Mac Pro, der für (RED) hergestellt worden ist. Anstelle der ursprünglich geschätzten 40’000 bis 60’000 US-Dollar wurde der neue Mac Pro für 977’000 US-Dollar verkauft.

Apple's design guru Jony Ive watched his customised Rose Gold Earpods, Red Mac Pro, one-off Leica camera and more raise millions for the (RED) campaign for the Global Fund to fight against AIDs, tuberculosis and malaria over the weekend. On 23 November, a total of 44 items went under the hammer in a special auction curated by Ive and fellow designer Marc Newson at New York's Sotheby's auction house. In total, the 44 items sold for a sum of $12.8 million (£8 million). Über das Wochenende haben sowohl Dropbox, als auch Microsoft ihre Cloud-Apps für iPhone und iPad einer Revision unterzogen. Indien: Apple startet aggressives Trade-In-Programm
Apple hat in Indien ein aggressives Trade-In-Programm lanciert, um insbesondere den Absatz des iPhone 5c anzukurbeln. Gemäss der Zeitung «The Times of India» offeriert Apple Besitzern eines iPhone 4 eine Eintauschprämie von mindestens 13’000 Rupien, wenn sie zeitgleich ein neues iPhone erwerben. Der offerierte Mindest-Eintauschpreis für ein iPhone 4 liegt bei umgerechnet fast CHF 190.—. Auch Besitzer anderer Mobiltelefone können ihr Gerät bei Apple eintauschen. Je besser der Zustand des alten Mobiltelefons ist, desto höher ist der von Apple gebotene Eintausch-Rabatt.

Apple acquires 3D sensing technology company PrimeSense
Apple has acquired PrimeSense, a developer of 3D sensors that allow devices to respond to the environment in three dimensions. It is not known for which applications Apple aims to use the PrimeSense technology or the price it has paid for the Tel Aviv, Israel, company. Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet emailed the company's standard statement after an acquisition. "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans," she wrote. PrimeSense technology was used to power the Kinect motion sensing input device in the original Xbox from Microsoft. Apple verteilt neues OS X Mavericks Beta an Entwickler
Aktuell verteilt Apple eine neue Version von seinem Betriebssystem Mavericks an registrierte Entwickler. OS X 10.9.1 hat die Kennzeichnung 13B35. Neben Stabilitätsverbesserungen sind einige Fehlerbehebungen enthalten. Die vor kurzem veröffentlichte erste Version des Updates, hatte die Kennzeichnung 13B27. Nun hat Apple jedoch eine neue Version der Beta von OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 an registrierte Entwickler verteilt. Diese trägt die Kennzeichnung 13B35. Samsung zu 890 Mio. US-Dollar Schadensersatzzahlung an Apple verurteilt
Im Rechtsstreit um kopierte iPhone-Funktionen und Designelemente hat die Jury ein Urteil gefällt. Demnach muss Samsung insgesamt 890 Mio. US-Dollar Schadensersatz an Apple entrichten. Letztes Jahr wurde Samsung für schuldig befunden und sollte 1,05 Milliarden US-Dollar an Apple zahlen. Im März dieses Jahres entschied Richterin Lucy Koh die Neuverhandlung von 450 Mio. Dollar. Grund war die falsche Berechnung der Geschworenen bei einigen Patenten. Letzte Woche begann die Verhandlung, in welcher Apple einen Schadensersatz von 379 und Samsung von lediglich 52 Mio. Apple acquires 3-D sensing technology company PrimeSense
Apple has acquired PrimeSense, a developer of 3-D sensors that allow devices to respond to the environment in three dimensions.It is not known for which applications Apple aims to use the PrimeSense technology or the price it has paid for the Tel Aviv, Israel, company. Apple has confirmed that it has indeed acquired the Israeli 3D sensor maker PrimeSense, reports AllThingsD:
