Apple releases MacBook Pro firmware updates
Apple has released two EFI updates for its latest MacBook Pros. The MacBook Pro Retina EFI Update v1.3 update is recommended for late 2013 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro models. It addresses an issue where the built-in keyboard and Multi-Touch trackpad may become unresponsive.
The MacBook Pro Retina EFI Update v1.2 update is recommended for late 2013 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro models with NVIDIA graphics. It addresses a rare issue where the performance of the discrete graphics processor may be limited after a restart or waking from sleep.
Updates for either machine can be downloaded via Software Update in OS X.

Apple Stores to have 'special hours' November 17, 18
Apple retail stores will reportedly be closing up shop two to three hours early on both November 17 and November 18. Early closing times will not be limited to North American stores as retail outlets across the globe will also be locking doors earlier than usual.
While the reason behind the early closing times remains unclear, some believe it may have something to do with getting employees up to speed on impending product updates, namely the soon-to-be released Mac Pro and iPad mini with Retina display. Still others speculate it may be nothing more than standard pre-holiday pep talk and a review of logistics for employees to keep in mind as we head into the busiest shopping period of the year.

Apple issues Mail update for OS X Mavericks to address Gmail compatibility issues
If you're one of the many users dismayed by the fact that the Mail.app in OS X Mavericks doesn't play nicely with Gmail, your troubles will hopefully be a thing of the past.
After a number of reports indicating that Apple has been working on a fix, Apple today issued a Mail update for OS X Mavericks which aims to smooth over Gmail compatibility issues while also offering a few other email enhancements.

The United States Senate has approved the anti-discrimination bill that Apple CEO Tim Cook endorsed in an Op-Ed earlier this week. Google Drive updates for iOS with multiple-account support and cloud printing
Google Drive has released a minor update for their iOS app that brings along some big features. The biggest addition is the arrival of Multiple Account Support. Finally you'll be able to switch between personal, work and other Google accounts with ease.
Google Drive is also introducing Single Sign In, automatically signing you into other Google apps like YouTube, Google Maps and Chrome simply by signing into Google Drive. Finally, Drive now supports Google Cloud Print and AirPrint, as well as support for iOS 7.

RunKeeper gets M7 and AirDrop support
The developers at RunKeeper have done it again, keeping up not only with the new features in iOS 7, but also adding support for the M7 motion coprocessor that is installed in the iPhone 5s.
To begin with, RunKeeper 4.1 has added AirDrop (iPhone 5, 5s and 5c only) sharing of friend requests and workouts. Apple issues GarageBand 10 update
Don't blink, or you may miss this update. Apple released GarageBand 10.0.1 for the Mac late last night, citing fixes for "a number of minor issues" and improved overall app stability.
If you're a fan of Apple's consumer music-making app, you might want to make sure that the update has been installed by visiting the Updates tab of the Mac App Store. GarageBand 10 was released last month concurrently with the release of OS X Mavericks, adding such fun things as a virtual drummer, but taking out critical features used by podcasters.

Apple still shipping Macs with Mountain Lion installed
Here's one for the "What were they thinking of?" file. David Gerwitz at ZDNet/CBS Interactive ordered a totally tricked-out iMac from Apple after the October 22 event, totally expecting the device to show up with the latest and greatest version of OS X. The order was made on October 28, a full week after OS X Mavericks shipped, and he received the iMac today. Upon taking the shiny big-screen device out of the box and booting it up, he was surprised to find that it wasn't running OS X Mavericks, nor was it even running the most recent version of OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5). USA: iPhone 5s und iPhone 5c können bald in Apple Stores repariert werden
Gerüchten zufolge wird Apple Kunden bereits in naher Zukunft mit defekten iPhone 5s und iPhone 5c die Möglichkeit bieten können, gewisse Reparaturen am Gerät in den Apple Retail Stores selbst durchzuführen. Dieser Service wird nicht nur Kunden von AppleCare, sondern auch allen anderen Nutzern zur Verfügung stehen. Während die Reparatur für AppleCare-Kunden in den meisten Fällen kostenlos ist, hat die Reparatur für die anderen Kunden je nach Schaden einen anderen Preis. Apple wird dank der Reparaturmöglichkeiten künftig in diversen Fällen auf den kompletten Austausch der Geräte verzichten können und stattdessen eine Reparatur durchführen. Die Möglichkeit der Reparatur ist nicht nur umweltfreundlicher, sondern hilft Apple auch bei der Senkung der Kosten. Eine Reparatur dürfte in der überwiegenden Anzahl der Fälle günstiger sein als der komplette Austausch des Gerätes.

The "warrant canary" in Apple's compliance report
There was an interesting nugget we glanced over regarding Apple's report detailing its compliance with various Government information requests.
In the Notes section of the report, located at the very bottom, Apple writes:
Apple has never received an order under Section 215 of the USA Patriot Act. We would expect to challenge such an order if served on us.
So why is that so interesting?
Well, if Apple had in fact received an order under Section 215 of the Patriot Act, it wouldn't be legally allowed to admit it. Consequently, if the aforementioned language is removed in future compliance reports

Mavericks Updates an Tester und Mitarbeiter verteilt
Apple hat das Mail-Update für OS X Mavericks, das einen Fehler der Mail-App des Betriebssystems beheben soll, nun auch für registrierte Mac-Entwickler freigegeben. Gemäss eigenen Aussagen hat Apple das Update bereits am 31. Oktober zur Verfügung gestellt. Allerdings ist die Aktualisierung erst gestern auf der Download-Seite für Entwickler aufgetaucht.

Spezielle Apple Store Öffnungszeiten Mitte November — Rätselraten um Grund
Weltweit werden einige Apple Stores zwischen dem 15. und 20. November spezielle Öffnungszeiten haben. Beispielsweise wird im Apple Store in Oberhausen am Freitag und Samstag, dem 15. und 16. November, der Ladenschluss von 20:00 auf 22:00 verschoben. Am folgenden Montag, dem 18. November, hat der Apple Store nur bis 19:00, also eine Stunde kürzer, geöffnet. Am Dienstag und Mittwoch wird Apple den Ladenschluss um zwei Stunden auf 22:00 verschieben.
Auch andere Apple Stores haben im gleichen Zeitraum geänderte Öffnungszeiten. Im Louvre wird beispielsweise am Montag der Ladenschluss um eine Stunde vorgezogen, während das Geschäft am Dienstag bereits wieder um Mitternacht öffnet.
Keine geänderten Öffnungszeiten sind in den Apple Stores in der Schweiz festzustellen. Weder an der Bahnhofstrasse, noch im Glattzentrum oder an der Rue de Rive in Genf haben sich die Öffnu

Wie dieser Korb oben im Bild, aber auch Hände und andere Gegenstände können auf dem Morphtisch in 3D projiziert werden. Apple has reportedly seeded two OS X Mavericks updates to its employees this week, ahead of an expected release within the coming months. Tiny GarageBand update a welcome Mac App Store sight
On Wednesday, Apple issued its first update to the new GarageBand 10 for Mavericks. The release of version 10.0.1, which "improves stability and addresses a number of minor issues," is nothing spectacular in itself. What is interesting, however, is that the update--downloaded through the Mac App Store--was only 28.9MB on my Mac Pro. Apple hat in einem Support-Dokument auf die Kritik der Nutzer an den neuen iWork-Apps reagiert. Apple kündigt dabei die Rückkehr einiger Funktionen an, die mit dem Update gestrichen worden sind.

Apple to Begin Offering In-Store iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c Display Replacements
Apple is planning to begin offering in-store display replacements and other repairs for both iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, reports 9to5Mac, continuing Apple's effort to lower repair costs. These sources say that Apple Stores will be able to replace several aspects of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on-site, meaning that Apple no-longer needs to fully replace iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c units with damage or other problems.The display replacements will cost $149 for each device for users not subscribed to AppleCare+, and $79 for users subscribed to the warranty service. In addition, Apple will also have the ability to replace volume buttons, sleep/wake buttons, vibrating motors, the rear camera and speakers systems on both phones.

Study: iPhone's social media mentions are off the charts
The folks over at eBay Deals have just wrapped up an extensive study of smartphone mentions across major social media platforms and their results show a clearly defined picture of just how much Apple's iPhone dominates social media mentions compared to its competitors. The study looked at mentions of smartphone brands and individual models across on Twitter and in YouTube comments.
For the Twitter portion of the study, eBay Deals took a sampling of 10,000 tweets, all containing the word "smartphone," over a ten hour period. While on the OS level, Android beat out iOS (being mentioned 558 times versus iOS's 295 mentions), "Apple" walloped other smartphone brands with 1533 mentions. Apple Seeds Two New Mavericks Updates to Employees for Testing
Apple has internally seeded two upcoming updates to Mavericks, OS X 10.9.1 and OS X 10.9.2, to its employees, according to a source that spoke to 9to5Mac. Reportedly nicknamed "Board," OS X 10.9.1 will be released later in the month to fix several bugs introduced with OS X 10.9. Over the last five years, iOS has easily been my second-most used operating system by hours of usage after Windows (which I have to use for my day job as a Java developer). Analyst Predicts Multiple iPhone Refreshes Per Year, New Services After Meeting with Apple Execs
Apple's bifurcation of its iPhone lineup will provide the company with the opportunity to offer new iPhone products multiple times per year in the future, according to Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty. Along with pricing flexibility, the ability to offer new products at more frequent intervals will drive unit growth upwards in 2014. Apple recently introduced both the high-end iPhone 5s and the mid-range iPhone 5c, priced slightly lower, selling both alongside the lower-end iPhone 4s.
