LaCie wants to put a Porsche key in your pocket

OK, so that headline was bit link-baitish. But the real news is that storage accessory manufacturer LaCie and Porsche Design have teamed up to create a keychain flash drive that is both speedy and stylish. The LaCie Porsche Design USB Key (starting at US$29.99) is available starting today, and the company provided one for our review and testing. Design The key is lightweight (.3 oz, 8.5 gm) and tiny (2.1" x .5" x .15", 53 x 12 x 4 mm), while still retaining a feeling of solidity through the use of stainless steel in construction. It's available in both 16 GB ($29.99) and 32 GB ($49.99) models, and it's a bit surprising that the company didn't choose to offer a 64 GB model as well. I used one of LaCie's USB keys on my key

LaserDisc players started to fail under the strain of gameplay, as early players were really designed just for movies. The game moved to the arcades, and was one of the earliest games to charge 50 cents. I have dim memories of waiting in long lines to get a crack at it. The game is one of only th

How the iPhone took Nokia down

The once-mighty have fallen. Nokia's Symbian smartphone OS was, not too many years ago, the platform of choice. Now, says Daniel Eran Dilger at AppleInsider, the company is being sold off for scrap. He relates how a Finnish journalist for Helsingin Sanomat wrote a letter to the company in 2008 noting that a recently-acquired Nokia E51 smartphone was almost impossible to use compared to an iPod touch purchased after seeing a friend's device. Journalist Lauri Malkavaara's missive to Nokia stated that "I ordered my own iPod touch, turned it on, and knew immediately how to use it. I have used the device now on a daily basis for over six months, and I have not even thought about an

Getting started with iMovie

This week we begin our exploration of Apple's video editing application, iMovie '11. With it you can import bits of video (called clips) from your camera, add existing clips currently on your Mac, add still images from iPhoto, add music background tracks, edit clips so they contain just the parts you want to see, combine clips into a fully-realized movie, add transitions such as fades and dissolves between clips, add effects and titles, and share the results with friends, family, and the world at large.Powerful? Oh my, yes. Easy to use? After I complete this series of lessons, absolutely. In this first lesson we'll focus on iMovie's interface.About cameras and file typesBefore we look at iMovie's interface elements, let's briefly examine what kind of content you can use with the application. You can import video from a variety of devices. These include digital camcorders (camcorders that record to hard drive, flash memory, or DVD), digital still cameras that u

Teach Siri nicknames

Looking for a simpler way to tell Siri which of the many Dans, Jennifers, or Jasons in your contacts list you want to call? In this week's video tip, Scholle Sawyer McFarland shares a few ways to get the job done.TranscriptSiri makes it easy to call or text friends and colleagues when you're on the go. But what happens if your friends all have the same name? For instance, in the Macworld office there are three Dans, two of which have last names that start with "M."Usually, Siri will understand if you call people by their last names. For example, "Siri, text Frakes." But another, potentially more amusing, way to deal with an abundance of Katherines, Jennifers, or Dans is to assign your contacts nicknames.Whip up a nicknameOn your iPhone, tap Phone, tap a contact's name, tap Edit, and then scroll to the bottom. How to break through the Great Firewall of China on iOS

Most people have heard of the Great Wall of China, but China also has a modern-day virtual wall, frequently referred to as the Great Firewall of China and officially known as the Golden Shield Project. The Chinese government uses the Great Firewall to censor the Internet: Facebook, Twitter, and other sites are blocked. For tourists or expatriates in China, having no access to Facebook or Twitter can be vexing, since they may normally rely on those social networks to keep in touch with the happenings back home or to document a visit. But there are ways around the Great Firewall. The method most commonly used by visitors and Chinese citizens alike is to use a virtual private network (VPN): You simply connect, over an encrypted connection, to a server outside the firewall. During my recent visit to Beijing, I thought I'd see whether I could use such an approach to get around the Great Firew

PC sales continue to plunge, but the drop is less steep

The PC market moved into its sixth straight quarter of declining sales, analysts reported on Wednesday, although the dip was less pronounced than one firm expected.Market research firm Gartner reported that third-quarter PC sales dipped by 8.6 percent to 80.3 million units for the July-to-September quarter. IDC, with its own report, said the drop was 7.6 percent to 81.6 million units; the firm had previously projected a worldwide decline of 9.5 percent.Normally, the third quarter marks the beginning of the upswing for the PC market, as students and educators invest in new hardware during the so-called back-to-school buying season. But sales apparently failed to materialize, either an indication that students are turning more to tablets or simply were using notebooks that they had bought previously. On the other hand, emerging product categories and a greater assortment of Windows 8-based models pushed sales volumes slightly higher, IDC reported, as did the migration from Windows XP to Wi

Several classic Square Enix RPGs have already seen new life thanks to iOS ports, and now the company has confirmed to Kotaku that Final Fantasy VI will indeed get the same treatment. The game will be a modified version of the RPG that originally appeared for the SNES back in 1994. The game will be tweaked for touchscreen devices with a refined battle system and sharper graphics. Square Enix director and producer Takashi Tokita also shed some light on the future of Square titles on mobile platforms. Now that Final Fantasy I thru VI are taken care of, the next logical step would be to port the beloved PlayStation classic

Cameo enters the social video world with a clever and powerful app

Cameo is a new free social video app that aims to compete with the likes of Vine and Instagram. The app sports some powerful features and has enough advantages that people who love to share videos will want to give it a shake. The app allows you to take as many videos as you want. All the videos are rendered in the cloud at 720P, and a copy is saved to your iPhone so it can be uploaded to YouTube, Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr. One clever feature is the ability to share videos in real time with friends, so if, for example, you're both in different places at a sporting event, you can share each others clip

U.S. Carrier T-Mobile Offering Unlimited International Texting and 2G Data in 100 Countries [iOS Blog]

U.S. carrier T-Mobile today is announcing a new addition to its "UnCarrier" smartphone plans, adding unlimited texting and 2G data roaming in 100 countries, as well as voice calls from those countries at 20 cents per minute, reports AllThingsD. Data speeds will be slow, but likely adequate for basic email and perhaps even for mapping and navigation apps. Users will be able to purchase increased data speeds, with speeds reverting to the slower, free option once they have run out. Passes are available for one day and 100MB for $15, one week at 200MB for $25, or two weeks and 500MB for $50. The new program does require customers to ret

GOG is hosting a "Shutdown Promo," selling select games for 50% off

The U.S. government shutdown is bad news for furloughed workers, but when it comes to videogames it's apparently a convenient excuse for an impromptu sale! GOG is currently holding what it calls the "Shutdown Promo," and has slashed prices on a bunch of great games. The pack includes a total of seven games, three of which are Mac compatible, and all of which are currently half price. Among the Mac-flavored content is Theme Hospital, Alpha Centauri, and (comically) the Redneck Rampage collection. If you happen to have a Windows machine (or a fancy Boot Camp installation) you can take advantage of the price cuts on Tropico Reloaded, The Guild: Gold Edition, Capitalism Plus, and Capitalism 2. If you happen to be one of the unfortunate furloughed government employees, you can email
