Microsoft brings auto photo backup to SkyDrive for iOS
Microsoft has improved its SkyDrive app by letting users opt to have their photos automatically backed up to Microsoft's cloud storage. SkyDrive provides users with 7 GB of free storage just for signing up. That's a lot of photos to save on the cloud.
Because Microsoft has implemented SkyDrive across its myriad of services (Windows, iOS, Xbox One, etc.) this new update has a leg up on its auto backup offered by competitor Dropdox. You can't pull up your Dropbox photos on your shiny new Xbox One. Of course depending on what sort of photos you take with your iPhone, this could be a mixed blessing. Friday Favorite: How Keyboard Maestro saved my Mavericks macros
Bless Keyboard Maestro. It's not as if we haven't already given it coverage here at TUAW, but I fought to make it today's Friday Favorite because it pulled my grits out of the fire after I upgraded to Mavericks.
Me? I've been a Quickeys user since the freaking 1980's. One gets used to an app. Used to it enough that the thought of having to transition away from my decades-old keyboard macros to a new app was giving me hives. So I resisted, resisted, and then I resisted some more. After Lion debuted, I made excuse after excuse -- dropped a few of my daily macros, adjusted some others, and kept pushing forward with my old system just so I wouldn't have to start again from scratch.

Touch ID Patent Applications Show Details Behind 'Secure Enclave' and iPhone 5s Implementation
A pair of patent applications related to Apple's new flagship iPhone feature Touch ID shed some new light on how the fingerprint sensor itself works, as well as the "Secure Enclave" inside the A7 processor that analyzes and stores user fingerprints. The first, as noticed by Patently Apple, details a method by which the iPhone scans a finger and then provides that data to the "Secure Enclave" for matching and eventual approval. Rather than storing actual images of fingerprints, Apple takes a fingerprint map and runs it through a sort of encryption to prevent thieves from pulling fingerprint data from a compromised iPhone. The enclave only allows fingerprints to be checked against known valid ones, not the other way around.

Review: Picamerge for iOS creates double exposures with filter effects
Picamerge (U.S. $0.99 on sale) is a rather unique photo app for iOS that is designed solely to create double exposures to make some unique looking images. Gee, in the old days when we had double exposures with a film camera, it was usually by accident!
Picamerge lets you use photos from your camera roll and albums, or you can take pictures using the apps built-in camera functionality. When you have your double image, a slider bar across the bottom lets you adjust the blend, and filters along the bottom of the screen let you try some preset unique looks. The filters vary the transparency of the images, and can add some color effects if desired.

Belkin adds WeMo Insight Switch to the home automation tool family
The Belkin WeMo family of home automation tools grew by one yesterday with the introduction of a new member -- the WeMo Insight Switch (US$59.99). The Insight Switch one-ups its older sibling the WeMo Switch ($49.99) by being smarter and skinnier.

Moto G makes its North American debut at Telus and Koodo
The Moto G may not reach the US until January, but that doesn't mean it will be unavailable on North American shores until then. Apple's CPA witness credited with helping jury reach $290 million verdict against Samsung
After a week-long trial, a jury yesterday determined that Samsung owes Apple $290 million in damages on top of the $600 million the Korean-based tech giant already owes. During the course of the trial, Apple argued that Samsung should fork over upwards of $380 million while Samsung, not surprisingly, said they should only owe Apple about $52 million.
In reaching the $290 million figure, the jury indicated after-the-fact that they were particularly swayed by a CPA witness introduced by Apple.

Es ist immer schön ein Video wie das nach dem Break zu sehen, das in so deutschem Englisch läuft. In Pforzheim hat man wohl einen Operationssaal jetzt komplett vernetzt und mit Touchscreen ausgestattet, Videokonferenzen inklusive für Lernmöglichkeiten anderer Ärzte. iPhone 6 concept with wrap-around screen has no basis in reality, but it's still gorgeous
We've seen plenty of unsourced chatter about a future iPhone with an edge-to-edge display, but this video from YouTuber ConceptsiPhone pushes things over the edge -- literally. iWork: Update bringt individualisierbare Toolbar zurück

Airport, Time Capsule hard drive issues get fixed in latest firmware update
Apple has released a firmware update for its Airport Express and Time Capsule products that fixes a nasty USB hard drive issue that had widely been reported in Apple's support communities. AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule base stations Firmware 7.7.2 fixes an issue that prevented a USB hard drive connected to an AirPort Extreme from appearing as an available disk in Time Machine. The issue, of course meant that many people's Data were not being backed up via Time Machine.
Firmware update 7.7.2 is for AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule base stations with 802.11ac.

MacBeacon and Locate for iBeacon: An inexpensive way for developers to design and test iBeacons

Wir würden ihn ja gerne loslaufen lassen, aber es scheint so als hätte es für Curio doch nicht ganz dafür gereicht. Man hängt ihn einfach - falls man sehr einsam ist - an ein Tablet oder Smartphone und füttert ihn mit Befehlen. Klingt für uns irgendwie eine modernisierte und etwas umständliche von Tamagotchis. Das eigenwillige an dieser Umsetzung: es funktioniert über Lichtimpulse im Sensor, d.h. theoretisch wäre jeder Screen geeignet. Bislang aber gibt es nur iPhone-Kompatibilität und auch noch kein Verkaufsdatum.

Apple on Thursday evening published a new "Life on iPad" page on its website highlighting all of the interesting and unforeseen ways people are using the iPad.
The page features six distinct videos, with accompanying write-ups, that each describe iPads being used in extremely interesting situations. The examples include the iPad being used in the wind power industry, on Broadway, in the world of speedskating, in hospital operating rooms, in sand dune racing, and at a lush wine vineyard in Napa, California.
Each section on the new "Life on iPad" page is comprised of really rich and powerful photographs placed alongside extremely interesting stories. All in all, it's incredibly well put together.

Mac App of the Week: 2Do, a task manager with the right mix of power features, simplicity
I'm always on the lookout for new task managers that offer a different UI or a different approach to help me keep track of my seemingly endless to do list. The latest app to cross my path was 2Do for the Mac from Guided Ways technology.
I was familiar with 2Do, having used their iOS app a few years ago when it launched. The tabbed interface of the iOS version never grabbed me, so I stopped using after a few weeks. Late last year though, the company launched an OS X version, which was recently updated and overhauled. This latest Mac version (1.5.1) has brought back into the 2Do fold.

Dropbox CEO: Jobs wanted to "kill" the service
Dropbox founder and CEO Drew Houston gave an interesting interview at the Dreamforce conference. He spoke of where Dropbox had come from and where it's heading in the future. How iPads are changing the NBA
Bloomberg TV this week ran a really interesting segment detailing how NBA teams are using iPads equipped with special software to keep a discerning eye on player patterns and statistics, all in an effort to increase player and team performance on the court.
Provided by a company called Sportstec, the software is used by 28 of 30 NBA teams. The lone holdouts, for whatever reason, are the Indiana Pacers and the Dallas Mavericks. Notably, Sportstec's software is only compatible with iOS.

Apple verteilt zweite OS X 10.9.1 Beta sowie neue Safari-6.1.1-Beta
Apple hat registrierten Entwicklern in der Nacht auf heute eine zweite Vorabversion von OS X 10.9.1 zum Download freigegeben. Das Build mit der Kennung «13B35» beinhaltet insbesondere Verbesserungen bei der Mail-App. Beispielsweise wird eine Fehlfunktion behoben, die insbesondere Nutzer mit benutzerdefinierten Einstellungen in Gmail betraf. Des Weiteren wird ein Fehler beseitigt, der das Einfügen von Kontakt-Gruppen in Mail verhindert. Obwohl Apple bereits ein erstes Update für die Mail-App zum Download bereitgestellt hat, scheinen die Probleme noch nicht vollständig beseitigt worden zu sein.

TAudioConverter review: Put a nice face on open-source audio transcoding
TAudioConverter, a graphical front end for state-of-the-art audio codecs, is now my go-to tool for converting files and ripping audio from video files. It's fast and comprehensive, has a nicer interface than my previous favorite fre:ac, and doesn't attempt to install extra stuff as Freemake's Audio Converter does. Freemake is suitable for those who don't understand audio formatsbut for those who do, TAudioConverter is what you want. Besides being prettier and easier to configure, TAudioConverter also handles 32-bit files (with codecs that understand 32-bits, such as LAME MP3), while fre:ac does not. That alone was enough to make me switch, since often I record at 96kHz/32-bits. But it is also the only conversion tool I'm aware of that supports the

Dropbox has released version 3.0 of its iOS app, which has gotten a serious makeover. Version 3.0 sports an all-new iOS 7-inspired design, a new icon, and a host of new features. Perhaps the coolest feature is AirDrop support. Now users can send files in their Dropbox to other iOS users using iOS 7's built-in wireless transfer protocol.

OS X Mavericks has gotten off to a good start for Apple, with generally positive reviews and a high adoption rate. Part of this is no doubt due to the fact that it's free. But that doesn't lessen the operating system's great features, like tabbed Finder windows, iBooks, and Maps.
This got many of us talking about which version of OS X has been the the best in recent years. While Mavericks is on the list for many, some still say OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard was the best. For me, I'd have to choose Snow Leopard over Mavericks for the simple fact that Snow Leopard was the last OS X to support the "Save as" function. Another Samsung 3G patent likely to be invalid, German court says
A Samsung Electronics patent the company has declared essential to the implementation of 3G mobile standards is likely to be invalid, the Regional Court of Mannheim in Germany said Friday.Because the patent is likely to be invalid, the court postponed a decision in a lawsuit Samsung brought against Apple, court spokesman Joachim Bock said in an email. A decision will have to wait until the Federal Patent Court has decided on the validity of the patent, he added."The suspension of the proceeding requires a high probability that the patent is invalid. In these cases the court has to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of a suspension," Bock said. SRF lanciert den Teletext-Nachfolger
Das Schweizer Fernsehen SRF nimmt ab dem 4. Dezember HbbTV — den Nachfolger des Teletextes — in Betrieb. Unter dem Titel «SRF+» wird das Unternehmen auf den Sendern SRF 1 HD und SRF zwei HD den Zuschauern den neuen Standard für Hybrid-TV anbieten. Mit der Einführung von HbbTV wird der Teletext aber nicht ersetzt. Weil das TV-Gerät für den Empfang von HbbTV spezielle Anforderungen erfüllen muss, werden sicherlich noch einige Jahre vergehen, bis der Teletext vollständig durch HbbTV abgelöst werden kann. Ältere Fernseher mit einem HDMI-Anschluss können mit einer Settop-Box nachgerüstet werden.
Anstelle der verpixelten Darstellung des Teletextes können mit HbbTV beispielsweise Foto oder Grafiken angezeigt werden. Die Wetterprognosen zum Beispiel werden so künftig grafisch dargestellt. Befindet sich grösseres iPhone im Feldversuch?
Gemäss einem Bericht des chinesischen Blogs «C Technology» hat Apple mit den Tests eines grösseren iPhones begonnen. Ein Feldversuch hat den Gerüchten zufolge mit einem iPhone stattgefunden, welches über einen 4.9-Zoll grossen Bildschirm verfügt. Weitere Einzelheiten über den Feldversuch konnte der Blog nicht nennen.
Diese Gerüchte aus China decken sich mit den Aussagen des bekannten Analysten Ming-Chi Kuo. Seiner Ansicht nach wird Apple im nächsten Jahr ein grösseres iPhone auf den Markt bringen. Apple hält nach wie vor am Prinzip fest, dass das iPhone mit einer Hand bedient werden können solle. Aufgrund dieser selbstauferlegten Restriktion wäre der Bildschirm eines grösseren iPhones sicherlich nicht grösser als 5 Zoll.

iWork für iOS und OS X aktualisiert
Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute die iWork-Apps für iOS und für OS X aktualisiert. Apple beschränkt sich bei diesem Update auf kleinere Verbesserungen und Wiedereinführungen von Funktionen früherer Versionen.
Bei Pages und Numbers für iOS hat Apple gemäss der Update-Beschreibung lediglich Stabilitätsverbesserungen vorgenommen und einige ungenannte Probleme behoben.
Spürbare Verbesserungen gab es allerdings bei Keynote für iOS. Die Präsentations-App beinhaltet in der Version 2.0.1 neue Übergänge und neue Animationen. Dazu zählen Animationen wie «Blenden», «Hineinfliegen», «Hinausfliegen», «Kreisförmig»

The K-12 private education Paideia School in Atlanta now hands out about 550 Apple iPads each year to students for classroom teaching and homework purposes. And while students love them, some parents are now pressing the IT department to restrict use of apps on the devices because they think there's too much game-playing."We don't block the apps the students are using, and a lot of students are playing Angry Birds,' something we don't want," says Brian Meeks, network engineer at Paideia School. Samsung muss Apple 290 Millionen US-Dollar Schadenersatz bezahlen
Die Jury des kalifornischen Bezirksgerichts in San Jose hat am Donnerstag im Wiederaufnahmeverfahren zwischen Apple und Samsung ein Urteil gefällt. Apple wurde in einem ersten Verfahren mehr als eine Milliarde US-Dollar Schadenersatz gewährt. Von diesem Betrag wurden später 450 Millionen US-Dollar abgezogen, weil der Schadenersatz falsch berechnet worden ist. Am Donnerstag entschied die Jury, Apple von den ursprünglich Abgezogenen 450 Millionen US-Dollar 290 Millionen US-Dollar zuzugestehen. Mit dieser Summe liegt das Gericht im Ergebnis näher an der Forderung von Apple als an derjenigen von Samsung. Apple forderte zu Beginn des Prozesses eine Entschädigung im Umfang von 380 Millionen US-Dollar, während Samsung lediglich 52 Millionen US-Dollar bezahlen wollte.

Apple has updated the three apps that make up the iWork suite.
Pages was updated to version 5.0.1. This upgrade adds the ability to customize the toolbar with the tools you deem most important. In addition, the center and edge guides are now on by default.
Keynote is up to version 6.0.1. The update adds the ability to customize the toolbar with the tools you deem most important. A number of slide transitions were added.

You've undoubtedly seen some people do some strange things to their iPhones. From turning the home button into a blingy bow tie to sticking a tiny Starbucks latte in the audio port, there seems to be no shortage of ways to make your iPhone unique. Motorola lets unlocked Developer Edition handsets keep their warranties, reinstates old ones

Oh Siri, you tease: the iBooks plug edition
So what happens when you ask Siri to find you a bookstore? You may get some awesome snark ("Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.") Or, Siri might "suggest" another way for you to grab a book to read.
Yes, Apple is now pushing iBooks as one of its canned answers for finding bookstores -- a fact we found amusing enough that we thought we'd share.
The targeted marketing hints, surprisingly, did not seem to spread to requests for "Where can I buy music?" and "Where can I rent TV shows?". It may be only an iBooks thing at this time.

Revisiting Single Application Mode in light of Mavericks' App Nap feature
I have known about OS X's "Single Application Mode" for a long time, but a new feature in Mavericks has me testing it out again. According to an article on TidBITS, Single-Application Mode was introduced in 1999 with the (then) new Finder in Mac OS X. "Single-Application Mode" meant that when you switched from one app to another using the Dock then the new application that you had selected would come to the front, and the other applications would automatically hide. According to the TidBITS article, this was initially intended as the default behavior for the Finder, but public reception was so bad that so Apple dropped it as the default. However, the feature has continued to exist ever since.

First thing's first: Panem Run doesn't have a lot to do with The Hunger Games at all. As an "endless runner" game, it has about as little connection to the franchise as you could imagine. Apple Seeds New Build of OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 Beta to Developers
Apple today released an updated version of OS X 10.9.1 for developers, which carries a build number of 13B35. The first version of 10.9.1 seeded to developers last week had a build number of 13B27. Build 13B35 of OS X 10.9.1 includes several fixes for Gmail in OS X Mail, along with improvements to Smart Mailbox functionality.
