Apple's App Store likely to crack 500,000 apps in 2011
Apple has a high chance of passing the 500,000 app milestone for the App Store based on current data. Having unofficially passed 325,000 active titles as of December 26, the App Store is now seeing 25,421 apps submitted per month, 148Apps said. If every app were approved, Apple could exceed the half-million point in seven months, or near the end of June.

Chopper jetzt auch für Mac erhältlich - Kostenlos
Das bereits aus dem AppStore bekannte Spiel Chopper wurde vor einem Monat auf Version zwei aktualisiert. Version 1 ist schon seit gut zwei Jahren im AppStore verfügbar.Parallel zu dieser Aktualisierung hat der Entwickler MacInJungle "Chopper for Mac" angekündigt. Zwar sollte das Spiel erst zu Beginn des Mac-AppStores veröffentlicht werden (6. Clear iSpot discontinued already
Well, that certainly didn't last very long, did it? Looks like Clear is already sending its unusual iSpot product to the great WiMAX network in the sky less than five months after its introduction. As a refresher, the iSpot's claim to fame is that it was designed to work only with iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads -- and in exchange for the crazy restriction, Clear would charge you less than $100 for the hotspot itself and just $25 a month for unlimited 4G access capped at 6Mbps down. Mel's favorite iOS apps of 2010
I thought this might be a hard to list to come up with, but I really just took a look at the apps that I use every day, and that made it easy. I won't be including built-in apps like Safari or Mail, but the things that third-party developers have come up with that make having an iPhone such a pleasure. That's not to say that there may be other apps that compete with some that I've mentioned, and are just as good or maybe better, but these are my choices, all used day to day. So here, in no particular order, are my favorites.

LightWave 10 builds in preview renders, third-party support
NewTek has begun shipping LightWave 10, a major update of the company's 3D graphics suite. The software is capable of handling modeling, rendering and animation, whether independently or within the context of a larger workflow. Samsung aims to outsell Nokia within 3 years
Following several significant smartphone launches in 2010, Samsung has set a goal of outpacing Nokia through the next several years. The company is preparing to accelerate cellphone production and distribution in China and Vietnam, as both markets are expected to help bring a 20-percent increase in shipments next year.

Russia claims to have iPhone 4 beater through better GPS
Russian firm AFK Sistema said it had co-developed a phone that would purportedly beat the iPhone 4. Shown to Prime Minister Putin this week, the ZTE-made A918 Android phone uses Russia's native GLONASS GPS system and a matching 90 nanometer Qualcomm chip to get directions. The win over Apple reportedly comes from the accuracy, which at 93 percent is much higher than a claimed 64 percent for the iPhone 4.

Apple patent filing outlines social networking for shopping
While a lot of shopping is making the move to online stores, for many people there's no substitute for the real thing -- going to a store, browsing merchandise, and picking up and trying on things. A recent patent filing by Apple, discovered by AppleInsider, demonstrates a Ping-like social networking service that lets shoppers chat with others, ask for suggestions, get a "thumbs-up / thumbs-down" on a potential purchase, and more.

AT&T, Verizon tie for last in cell carrier customer help
Both AT&T and Verizon were tied for last place among major US cellular carriers in customer service, a study found on Thursday. The two received overall C+ marks as poor retail and web help dragged them down after otherwise good phone service. Staff at either of the largest incumbents weren't very knowledgeable or helpful to Laptop's surveyors.

RunKeeper Pro goes free for iPhone, Android in January
RunKeeper Pro is free through to the end of January, developer FitnessKeeper has announced. Available for iPhone and Android devices, the app uses GPS tracking to monitor run statistics such as distance, pathing, speed and calories burned. The data is uploaded to the RunKeeper website, where it can be shared as a profile page or via Twitter and Facebook.

Skype for iPhone: Version 3 bringt Videotelefonie
Konkurrenz für Apples FaceTimeFür die kostenlose iPhone-App von Skype ist heute ein Update erschienen, das nun auch Videotelefonie ermöglicht. Während es auf dem iPhone auch unterwegs mit UMTS funktionieren soll, ist der iPod touch naturgemäss auf WiFi-Empfang festgelegt. Apples Mobilgeräte können Macs und PCs anrufen und umgekehrt. Ausserdem soll Videotelefonie zwischen Mobilgeräten möglich sein. Skype weist jedoch darauf hin, dass die Bildqualität über 3G nicht optimal sein könnte, weshalb möglichst WiFi-Verbindungen bevorzugt werden sollten. Zudem könnten je nach UMTS-Netzbetreiber zusätzliche Gebühren anfallen.

RunKeeper Pro is free through January -- there's no excuse to be a couch potato
If you read my recent roundup of exercise and dieting apps for iOS, you'll probably remember that one of my featured apps was RunKeeper for iPhone, which I use to track my walks and bike rides. Up until this time, I've used the RunKeeper Free edition, which lacks the customizable audio cues, coaching features, and improved fitness class experience of the Pro version.

China fires warning shot at Skype over VoIP competition
China may have broadcast intentions to discourage VoIP services such as Skype today with a warning on Thursday. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology warned online that it would target "illegal Internet phone services," but didn't say which ones were involved. Government officials have previously argued that only government-backed carriers have the right to join Internet connections to their phone networks.

Bodega 1.3 available, a fun alternative to the Mac App Store
With most Mac users happily anticipating the availability of the Mac App Store on January 6th, many seem to forget that there has been an App Store for Mac for quite some time -- Bodega.
Bodega is an app discovery and download gateway from Freshcode. The app can be downloaded by anyone for free, and the store is constantly stocked with new apps from a variety of Mac developers. The update provides bug fixes as well as performance and feature improvements, while maintaining the fun "corner store" look and feel that has been a trademark of Bodega.
Ahead of the release of the Mac App Store, Freshcode is pushing Bodega to developers as an alternative with many advantages:

Sprint's MiFi 4082 surfaces in leaked press shot
A forum post late Wednesday provided the first look at the finished version of one of Novatel's first 4G routers, the MiFi 4082 for Sprint. The hybrid WiMAX and EVDO router spotted by SprintUsers veteran r0fl shows an at least superficially upscale design with a brushed metal effect and chrome trim. Its design still adopts the familiar pocketable shape but has extra indicators for signal strength and what may be the presence of 4G speed.

Russia's first GLONASS phone an 'iPhone 4 competitor,' except not really (video)
As the story goes, Russia-based AFK Sistema's subsidiary Sitronics (along with US' Qualcomm and and China's ZTE) have developed the first smartphone to use GLONASS -- specifically one with a 90nm GPS-GLONASS chip. It's been called, in so many words, the "Russian answer to the iPhone 4" by the Powers That Be, and without getting into key details like platform and specs, we know officially the phone is going on sale in Russian sometime in March for 10,990 rubles (about $360 in US).

Nook Color tops B&N holiday sales, e-books outsell paper
Barnes & Noble today made sure it wasn't excluded from the round of high profile e-book news from Amazon and Kobo by claiming some of its own successes. The Nook line is now Barnes & Noble's bestselling single item in company history, and the Nook Color was its top-selling item for the holiday this year. It wouldn't give out device numbers but said it had sold "millions" of all Nooks and that demand for the Color was still beyond its expectations.

EU firms up micro USB phone charging standard
The European Union on Wednesday formally established its micro USB charging standard for phone charging. The approach proposed over a year ago will guarantee that phones and phone chipsets from at least 14 companies, including Apple, LG, Motorola, Nokia and RIM, will support charging over a micro USB connection without needing to switch chargers. This is great news for the mom of at least one Engadget editor (who has been despairing at her inability to share e-books with Aunt Kathy). That's right: Amazon has enabled Kindle book loaning on select titles. Of course, there are caveats: books can be loaned once, for a period of fourteen days. Amazon wrapped up the year on Thursday with word that itself and Apple topped the lists of its most popular items of the year. The Kindle with Wi-Fi unsurprisingly topped both the bestseller and wish list charts for electronics, but Apple had unusual success in computers. The 13-inch MacBook Pro was both the bestselling notebook on Amazon and the most wished for, although the most gifted was a low-end, 15.6-inch Toshiba Satellite.

iPhoto 101: How to delete photos
Whether your Mac contains a mechanical hard drive or an SSD, everyone needs more space. We're all used to dumping Finder's trash frequently to reclaim drive space, but what some of you might not know is when you delete pictures from iPhoto, they remain on your computer since iPhoto has its own trash. If you've never done this you may have hundreds, or for that matter, thousands of pictures or videos in iPhoto that are just clogging up your drive.
There are two ways to delete the iPhoto trash. One way is to just right click on the word Trash in iPhoto's menu bar, and selecting Empty Trash. The other, and possibly more telling way, is to single click on the word Trash in the menu bar. You'll be presented with a

Sprint's 3G / 4G MiFi 4082 revealed?
Wasn't long ago that we found hard evidence of a WiMAX-capable MiFi from Novatel in the FCC -- and now, we might have the first press shot of it. Of course, press shots are always prettier than the actual devices, but even if you beat this image with the ugly stick for a minute or two, we're pretty sure it'd still be a good deal more handsome than the first-gen 3G MiFi that Sprint, Verizon, and others are using currently. Browserbasiertes Etch-A-Sketch aus iPod Touch und Arduino (Video)

Man muss nicht immer nach dem Sinn fragen wenn man einen Hack sieht, manchmal sind sie einfach nur elegant und schön anzusehen wie dieser hier. Aus einem LCD-Display, einem Arduino, und einem mit Python / Tornado geschriebenen WebSocket Server hat Saeki Yoshiyasu dieses Konstrukt gebastelt: mit seinem iPod Touch kann er sich mit dem WebSocket Server verbinden, im Browser etwas malen und schon erscheint es auch auf dem LCD-Display. Wer wissen will wie er das gemacht hat, hüpfe schnell hinter den Quelle-Link, alle anderen sollten sich zumindest das Video reinziehen.

Ein Tüftler namens James Whelton hat einen "iPod nano Hack" präsentiert, der allerdings noch so ziemlich nichts kann, außer zeigen dass da noch was kommen könnte, was dann zum Jailbreak führen könnte: Mit einer modifizierten Version des Files "SpringBoard plist" ist es Whelton gelungen, beim Booten eines der Start-Icons auszublenden. Der chinesische Kleinscheiß-Macher Noosy hat seit einer Weile einen HDMI-Adapter für iPad und Co. im Programm, allerdings ohne Preis und wahrscheinlich ohne HDCP-Kompatibilität, was dann bedeutet: DRM-Inhalte werden wohl nicht angezeigt. Der japanische Hersteller Sanwa dürfte genau das am Start haben und sein HDMI-Adapter für iPhone 4 und iPad hat auch einen Preis, der entsprechend happig ausfällt: Für 5980 Yens bzw. 55 Euro seid ihr dabei.

CES: Samsung kündigt sauschlanken 3D Blu-ray Player an, Klaustrophobie im Wohnzimmer hat ein Ende

Habt ihr auch diese unangenehme Platzangst im Wohnzimmer? Natürlich weil die ganze Unterhaltungselektronik so raumgreifend ist, glasklare Sache. Zum Glück hat Samsung das Problem erkannt und schrumpft und plättet, was das Zeug hält und hört damit nicht beim Fernseher auf! Zur CES gibt´s daher dann den superschlanken 3D Blu-ray Player, der gerade mal 23 Millimeterchen dünn ist und trotzdem YouTube-, Facebook- und Twitter-Integration unter der Haube hat. Uff.

Diese Spionagekamera verbrigt sich wie gehabt in einem Alltagsgegenstand und zwar an einer im Zweifelsfall tatsächlich sinnvollen Stelle: nämlich im Garderobenhaken. Das haben sich die Designer Wang Qiubo, Shen Lingyan, Zou Yujuan und Shi Tenggao fein ausgedacht: Leuchtende Seifenblasen illumieren effektvoll die Hütte, Groß und Klein pustet und staunt, alles voll SciFi. Leider verraten die Designer nicht, wie die Chose funktionieren soll, vermeintlich mit Seifenzusätzen und Schwarzlicht, aber vielleicht auch einfach mit Zauberpulver. Schade aber toll.

Seoul bekommt erste kommerzielle Elektrobusflotte der Welt

Bei uns kann (und wird) das wohl noch etwas dauern, aber in Seoul sind sie schon ein bisschen weiter: die Stadtregierung hat dort die weltweit erste kommerzielle Elektrobusflotte in Betrieb genommen. Bis zum Jahr 2020 sollen die Hälfte aller in Seoul fahrenden Busse elektrisch sein. Die Busse sind in den letzten anderthalb Jahren von Hyundai Heavy Industries und Hankuk Fiber entwickelt worden, haben eine Reichweite von 83 Kilometern pro Ladung und können in einer knappen halben Stunde wiederaufgeladen werden. Die Höchstgeschwindigkeit beträgt immerhin 100 km/h, beim Bergabfahren und Bremsen wird zusätzlich Energie gewonnen.

Dazu musste erst eine blitzschnelle Kamera und dann ein Blitz her, und das war mit gigantischem Aufwand verbunden: Das Florida Institute of Technology bastelte eine 680 Kilo-Kamera in der Größe und Form eines Kühlschranks, die im Innern einen Röntgendetektor beherbergt und aussen zur Sicherheit gegen Strahlung mit Blei verkleidet ist. Cowon D3 Plenue: Android PMP mit Handy-Anmutung

Den Cowon D3 Plenue könnte man auf den ersten Blick für ein Phone halten, allein es ist ein reiner PMP, der mit Android 2.1 läuft. In den microSD-Kartenslot passen Karten bis zu 32 GB, das Display ist ein 3,7-Zoll AMOLED mit einer Auflösung von 800 x 480 Pixeln. 1080p-Files kann man auch abspielen, was natürlich besser über den HDMI-Ausgang geht. Außerdem mit dabei: WiFi, T-DMB Tuner, Bluetooth und ein Accelerometer. Nur telefonieren geht eben nicht.

Da schaut er, der einbruchbereite Einbrecher: Aber drinnen scheint ein TV zu flimmern, also lieber das Nachbarhaus knacken. So soll er wirken der "Fake-TV Anwesenheits-Simulator" aus dem Online-Shop: "12 LEDs verändern laufend Lichtintensität und -farbe. Auf- und Abblendungen, Kameraschwenks, ruhige und dynamische Szenen, Alles wird perfekt realistisch simuliert." Bleibt noch die Frage nach der Tonkulisse, die ja auch irgendwie typisch ist im TV-Betrieb. Dass Videochat bei Skype auf dem Weg ist, dürfte eigentlich klar sein, und auch die Anzeichen auf einen baldigen Starttermin verdichten sich. Motorola Cliq 2: neuer Slider in den USA schon im Januar?

Ob und wann das Cliq 2 von Motorola nach Deutschland kommt wer weiß das schon. In den USA wird jedoch noch im Januar mit dem Android-Neuling gerechnet. Der Slider kommt mit einer 5-Megapixel-Kamera, den üblichen Schnittstellen wie WiFi und Bluetooth und soll über eine neue Version der Motorola-Skin Blur verfügen. SoPhone aus China kopiert iPhone 4 eins zu eins

Klone die nur halb rankommen haben wir schon genug gesehen, aber das SoPhone scheint ein iPhone 4 bis aufs iTüpfelchen nachmachen zu wollen. Fast gleiches Interface mit identischen Icons und nahezu gleicher Handhabung, Bildschirm angeblich vom iPhone 3GS, WiFi, 4GB Speicher und 2 Megapixel-Kamera. Was es nicht ist: ein Smartphone. A newly-published Apple patent application suggests the creation of a Ping-like social network for retail stores, AppleInsider notes. As a foundation, the patent argues that people will often take friends with them on shopping trips, or use phone calls and salespeople for advice. TUAW's Daily App: Roget's Thesaurus
After a few weeks of games, we're going with more practical apps for a little while here, so here's an iOS version of the famous thesaurus reference book. Roget's Thesaurus is pretty much the name in finding words that can work in the place of other words, and a company called Mobifusion has worked with the real thing to bring it to the iPhone in a searchable form. The app lets you browse through 30,000 words and all of their synonyms, change text sizes on the fly or just flip through if you want to browse that way. You may argue that there are free thesauri (?) available online, and you'd be right, but it's nice, especially if you use one often, to have it available and ready to go on the iPhone whenever you want. The iPad title provides a variety of Lightroom-like image editing functions such as sharpening, curve and level adjustments, or white balance and saturation control. Taiwan carrier netbook sales only slighly hurt by tablets
Carriers in Taiwan aren't yet feeling a significant pinch from the iPad and other tablets on their netbook sales, those in the island's telecom industry said Thursday. Motorola's Android 2.4 tablet named Droid Xoom, stuck on 3G
Motorola's Xoom trademark may be a reflection of its Android tablet's final name, tips alleged very late on Wednesday. LG dips into media hubs with Smart TV Upgrader
LG continued a series of pre-CES unveilings today by releasing its first attempt at a purely digital media hub. The Smart TV Upgrader ST600 gives any TV, including those from LG's competitors, the same access to LG's Internet TV functions and TV app store as one of its own TV sets. Skype für iPhone: Update auf 3.0 bringt Videotelefonie
Für die kostenlose iPhone-App von Skype ist heute ein Update erschienen, das Videotelefonie auf Apples Mobilgeräten ermöglicht. RIM: No problems with Blackberry Playbook battery, on schedu
RIM has issued a statement to Erictric in an attempt to stymie reports that its forthcoming flagship Playbook tablet will is facing possible delays due to issues with its battery. Skype for iOS updated, adds video calling
Skype for iOS devices has been updated to version 3.0, bringing FaceTime-like call quality to both Wi-Fi and 3G for iOS devices capable of running iOS 4 or higher. Two-way video calling -- in either portrait or landscape mode -- is supported for the iPhone 4, fourth-generation iPod Touch, and iPhone 3GS. Receiving one-way video calls is supported on the iPad and third-generation iPod Touch (the app has not, however, been upgraded to a universal binary for iPad owners). China tightens hold on rare earth exports, markets soar
If you own a flat screen TV, a hybrid, a PC, or any number of cell phones, chances are you own a small but very sought after piece of China. The country accounts for 97% of the world's rare earth production, and it recently announced plans to scale back exports by 10% in 2011. The move probably won't have a big impact on the average consumer, but it's certainly gained a lot of attention on the world market: the US threatened action in the World Trade Organization, stocks for rare earth mining companies spiked significantly, and Sony Corp. vowed to decrease its dependence on the minerals. In a move that's sure to make users stand up and say "Hallelujah," the latest update to the Skype app for iPhone finally adds video calling.
The newest version of the app will allow users to make video Skype to Skype calls from their iPhone via Wi-Fi and 3G, and also call Skype desktop users on both OSX and Windows (and we presume their sorely neglected Linux users), as well as those using Skype on their iPhones and iPads.
Naturally, if you're on an iPad, you won't get to send video back -- and you have to deal with the iPhone interface since there isn't a native Skype app for the iPad. But, iPad 2 could change that. Ford Sync Destinations for iOS, Android pushes maps to cars
Ford upgraded its mobile Sync features again tonight with the addition of one of its own apps. Sync Destinations borrows cues from Google Maps and will push directions and map search results from an Android device, iPhone or iPad to any 2010 or 2011 Ford that supports at least Sync's TDI (Traffic, Directions and Information) services. BMW releases two apps for iOS
BMW has released two apps for iOS this week. The first one, based on the Mini brand, is called Mini Connected, and allows you to not only track information about your car, but also access web radio and audio version of Internet feeds, hooked up directly to your car's stereo. And on cars equipped with navigation features, you can even send directions and searches back and forth from your iPhone to the car's systems, and vice-versa.

Angry Birds creators: Apple still does mobile apps best
In a recent interview, Peter Vesterbacka of Rovio (the makers, if you haven't heard by now, of Angry Birds) says that from a developer viewpoint, Apple is the platform to go with. "They have gotten so many things right," says Vesterbacka, "and they know what they are doing and they call the shots." He says that Android's issue isn't so much about device fragmentation as it is "ecosystem fragmentation" -- by spreading itself out so much, Google's smartphone OS has "so many different shops, so many different models" running that it's tough for developers to find their own place in all of the chaos.

Barnes & Noble has made a pair of filings at the US Patent and Trademark Office discovered today that hint it has long-term plans for Nook sequels. One, for a "Nook2," was filed on June 8 and clearly attached to a device for "downloadable electronic publications." Apple has again rejected a revised app version of the "Manhattan Declaration," a document written and signed by various leaders in the conservative-christian community, according to a report from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). A top of the line iPhone 4 with 32 GB is $248.99.
Radio Shack had a similar promotion earlier this month, but this latest offer does not include the attractive Trade and Save buy back program.
