360|MacDev: Jay "saurik" Freeman on the jailbreak store for Mac apps
When it comes to jailbreaking, there's probably no name as familiar to the development community than that of Jay "saurik" Freeman. Jay is the brain behind the Cydia App Store, and this morning he gave the attendees of 360|MacDev an overview of his upcoming jailbreak store for Mac OS X, cycript, and Cydia Substrate.
Currently, Cydia Installer has been used by about 10% of all iPhone users, or about 10 million devices. There are well over 30,000 packages available for iOS, and a lot of open source material can be downloaded from Cydia. He refers to Cydia as a store for things that are not apps, but extensions of what iOS devices can do.
Freeman felt that the same type of store would be useful for Mac OS X devices; the result is a Mac Cydia, which will be a

FCC report finds 68 percent of US broadband connections aren't really broadband
As the FCC itself has made abundantly clear, the definition of "broadband" is an ever-changing one, and its latest report has now revealed just how hard it is for the US to keep up with those changes. According to the report, a full 68 percent of "broadband" connections in the US can't really be considered broadband, as they fall below the agency's most recent minimum requirement of 4 Mbps downstream and 1 Mbps upstream. Angry Birds developers to launch 'Bad Piggy Bank' mobile payment system
After millions of downloads of their popular game Angry Birds and a plan to take over the gaming world, Rovio is looking to get a little more from users; they now want to implement a mobile payment system inside the game itself. In an effort to grab a few more bucks from impulsive buyers/gamers they are launching Bad Piggy Bank, which with just a touch of a button will let customers make in-app game purchases without a credit card -- the price of anything they buy will just be added to their monthly cell phone bill.

Microsoft, Twitter breakfast sparks takeover rumors
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and his Twitter counterpart Dick Costolo were reportedly seen today having breakfast and have sparked rumors that Microsoft might acquire or land a deal with Twitter. The nature of the discussion wasn't known, but the two companies have both declined comment, hinting that it was business and not simply a personal discussion. It's unknown by the Forbes witness how often the two have met.

T-Mobile says it'll launch '4G' tablets in 2011

News: Apple bidding on Nortel wireless patents
Apple is among several companies expected to bid on patents owned by telecom company Nortel Networks. Survey finds iPad negatively affecting print media
Bad news for members of the newspaper industry that expect to use digital media to save their print editions. A recent survey from the Reynolds Journalism Institute (RJI) shows that iPad owners are more likely to read news on their iPad than a printed newspaper. RJI surveyed over 1,600 iPad owners and asked them about their usage habits, especially as it concerns reading and news consumption.
Not unexpectedly, 84.4% of iPad owners primarily use their iPad to follow breaking news and current events. As a result, newspaper subscriptions, once the staple of the newspaper industry, are being cannibalized by the iPad. Novatel sues ZTE and Franklin over MiFi-related patents
Smartphones aren't the only mobile devices caught up in patent warfare, it seems: Novatel's just sued ZTE and Franklin over five patents related to the "key architecture and functionality" of its MiFi series of mobile hotspots. What's interesting is that Verizon carries the MiFi and ZTE-built Fivespot, while Sprint's MiFi lives alongside the ZTE Peel and carrier-branded Franklin modems, so we're curious to see if any of the carriers step in to mediate the dispute. Apple forcing MobileMe users to take long passwords?
Apple is, intentionally or not, forcing some MobileMe subscribers to adopt more complex passwords, an Italian site reports. Some people attempting to log into the service say that they are getting non-descript login failures despite properly entering their information. The issue appears to be limited to subscribers whose passwords are under eight letters and/or without a combination of letters and numbers.

Mac App Store won't support Game Center, in-app purchases
With the launch of the Mac App Store about a month away, many developers are preparing their apps for distribution in a whole new way. However, they're finding that the store won't offer all of the features of its iOS counterpart, at least in its initial release. Specifically, Game Center and in-app purchases aren't supported.

Motorola's new logo: it's red
Been wondering about what impact Motorola's January split into two distinct entities will have on your humble consumption of consumer electronics? Well, after attending Moto's big Christmas do in London, we seem to have uncovered one of the biggies: the Droid maker is switching to a crimson new brand identity from the start of the new year. They won't tell us much more than that, but we can only surmise that the slight chromatic deviation will be in an effort to distinguish between the Mobility arm, which will make all the pocketable things we know and love, and the Solutions group in charge of the less glamorous business hardware.

Kinect hacked with Mac to allow air guitar jam sessions
On his website this month, Chris O'Shea revealed he has hacked Microsoft's Xbox Kinect accessory to allow users to engage in air guitar sessions. There is video proof of the working hack (embedded below), which was ported over to the peripheral from a project O'Shea performed back in 2007 with a stereo camera. The program was written in C++ in openFrameworks and openCV for image processing, with ofxKinect and libfreenect drivers used on the Mac making the hack work.

News: iPad users complain of slow Wi-Fi under iOS 4.2
A number of iPad users are reporting sluggish Wi-Fi performance following the installation of iOS 4.2. According to a lengthy thread on Apple’s Support Discussions, the problem seems to affect both iPad Wi-Fi and iPad 3G models and multiple brands of routers, including Apple AirPort units; some users report having fixed the issue by rebooting their routers and/or resetting the network settings. Mac 101: Changing the default web browser in OS X
Apple introduced the Safari browser in January of 2003. Since then, it's matured to include extensions, an RSS reader and even a Windows counterpart. Still, many users prefer another browser. Since Safari is set as the default on every new Mac, you'll have to make the switch manually. Otherwise, Safari will launch whenever a browser is called for (clicking a link in an email message, for example), instead of your preferred browser. Here's how to change that.

Anybots QB hands-on
This week at GigaOM's NetWork 2010 conference in San Francisco, we briefly mingled with our robot overlords and survived to tell the tale. Anybots was letting its $15,000 QB telepresence robot decimate roam the crowd, and we were invited to interact with one and then take another for a spin by way of remote control. The experience was entertaining but still rather impersonal, mostly due to the lack of two-way video, something that's billed as "coming soon." Best Buy confirms free iPhone 3GS, BlackBerry Torch
Best Buy today confirmed that its rumored free iPhone 3GS deal is now live. Apple's 8GB phone is free on Friday for those who both visit in-store and who qualify. Although not mentioned, the deal should include both new two-year contracts, second lines and those eligible for a full upgrade.

Motorola Android tablet specs and Honeycomb home screen leaked in Taiwan?
Turns out Andy Rubin might not be the only fella who's been showing off the elusive Motorola Android tablet. Earlier this week, some lucky guy from Taiwan claims to have stumbled upon the same Honeycomb device, and was kind enough to share the above 3D live wallpaper screenshot as well as some thoughts on his one-hour hands-on. We're told that there'll be a 7-inch version as well as a 10-inch version (the latter appears to be what Rubin had), and the one we're looking at here has a 1280 x 800 display of unknown size

360 MacDev Keynote: Mike Lee's "Dirty Jokes and Code"
360|MacDev is underway in Denver, Colorado, and it's starting with a bang. While many developer conferences begin with a boring, bland, and somewhat cookie-cutter keynote, this morning's keynote was a NSFW -- but definitely memorable -- talk laced with dirty jokes by Mike Lee (at right).
Mike has done a lot of coding on some of the more popular software for Mac and iOS, including Delicious Library and Tap Tap Revenge, and is famous for his insightful talks on software design.

Your iPhone or iPod touch can handle a lot of tasks in your car. We use them as GPS navigators, MP3 players, and as a way to keep the kids from killing each other in the back seat. Tascam Portastudio handles four-track iPad recording
TEAC's pro audio divsion, Tascam, has released its first-ever iOS app. Portastudio is a four-track audio recorder, and mimics the Porta One, launched in 1984. The app records each track individually, using either an iPad's built-in microphone or headset input. VU meters are included for monitoring purposes, and knobs control basic level, panning and EQ adjustments.

Einige Leser wie auch mich selbst plagen seit einigen Tagen sporadische MobileMe-Warnhinweise, die besagen, dass die Anmeldung fehlgeschlagen sei und (unter anderem) eine Synchronisation nicht möglich wäre. Diesen bei mir unter Mac OS X 10.6.5 erscheinenden Dialog konnte ich immer problemlos mit einem "OK" bestätigen ignorieren und alle Sync-Dienste funktionierten anschließend dennoch

The posting for a Cellular Systems Performance Engineer went live December 9th and requires an individual knowledgeable in cellular technology, including standard GSM protocols (GSM, GPRS, EDGE, WCDMA, HSDPA, HSUPA) and CDMA. Fring adds "dynamic video quality"
If you're a fan of FaceTime on your iPhone / iPod touch, but are frustrated with the Wi-Fi only restrictions, then Fring (the voice, video and instant chat app) is most likely your go to app for video calling over 3G.
Since there's no sign of Skype implementing video calling on the iPhone over Wi-Fi (let alone 3G), and no one's yet to turn up to Apple's "open" FaceTime standard party, Fring is left holding the video calling over 3G fort for the likes of us. But they're not sitting back while the others catch up.

Ein XL-NES-Controller als Coutisch ist uns schon genauso untergekommen, wie ein monströser Super Nintendo-Controller, aber so akribisch und detailgetreu wie die Jungs von 10up Deluxe hat das Thema wohl noch niemand angegangen: Ihr Couchtisch ist das exakte 10:1-Modell eines NES-Controllers und zwar bis ins letzte Detail. The first Apple retail store has become a cult destination
A rather plain Apple retail store tucked away on the second floor of the over thirty-year-old Glendale Galleria in Calfornia has attained cult status by ostensibly being the first Apple store in existence. It opened on May 19, 2001 and was given the store designation number of 001. This is not news to a good number of Apple cognoscenti who regularly hang out at the store to soak in some of the historical Apple goodness, and others who make a pilgrimage to Glendale just for bragging rights.
Some people have been known to come to the store just to take a picture as a memento. Apple employees have been known to transfer to the Glendale store because of its hallowed status, and some customers say that the level of expertise of the staff

ZScapes holografische 3D-Drucke bringen die dritte Dimension auf die Landkarte

Zebra Imagings ZScape Drucke haben einen ziemlich überzeugenden 3D-Effekt, auch wenn sie auf althergebrachter Hologramm-Technologie beruhen. Die Drucke werden mit 3D-Daten erstellt, die dann als holografische Elemente per Laser auf filmbasiertes Material aufgebracht werden. Für die Drucke braucht man keinerlei 3D-Brillen oder Spiegelsysteme, sie lassen sich problemlos mit dem bloßen Auge betrachten. Google hat gestern abend nicht nur das Chrome OS und den schicken ersten Chrome OS Laptop CR-48 vorgestellt, sondern auch den Chrome Web Store (Quelle-Link). Kommt Samsungs Windows 7-Tablet Gloria Anfang 2011?

Das Bild hier ist zwar nur ein Mock-Up, aber die französische Seite Blogeee will erfahren haben, dass uns bald ein 10-Zoll Tablet mit Windows 7 und Slider-Tastatur von Samsung bevorsteht. Demnach soll das gute Stück zwischen April und März 2011 erscheinen und Gloria heissen. Der Grund für die Slider-Tastatur soll vor allem die verbesserungswürdige Touchscreen-Unterstützung von Windows 7 sein. Wir sind gespannt ob sich dieses Gerücht zur Wahrheit mausert.

Das iPad katapultiert Apple auf Platz 3 der weltweiten Verkäufe mobiler Rechner

Das iPad hat laut DisplaySearch Apple mit 12,4 Prozent Marktanteil auf Platz 3 der weltweiten Verkäufe mobiler Rechner (Tablets, Laptops, Netbooks) katapultiert. Ohne das iPad wäre Apple mit 4,8 Prozent nur auf Platz 8 gelandet. Besonders gut geht das Geschäft demnach in den USA wo Apple dieses Jahr wegen dem iPad die Nummer 1 ist. Nicht so gut verkauft sich das iPad in den Entwicklungsländern und in Japan, wob es für den Konsumentengeschmack noch zu wenig ortsbezogene Inhalte gibt.

Gingerbread auf Wildfire und Co. portiert
Nachdem Gingerbread (Android 2.3) nun offiziell ist und die Entwicklungsumgebung frei verfügbar, hat es nicht allzu lange gedauert bis findige Köpfe aus dem XDA Developer-Umfeld die neue Google OS portiert haben. Mit dabei sind HTC Hero, Evo 4G, HTC Wildfire, HTC HD2 und das Droid Eris. Noch ist die ganze Sache nicht ganz wasserfest, sprich das Portieren ist noch nicht wirklich sicher. Aber es funktioniert, wie man im Video nach dem Break sehen kann.

DIY-Kür: Messuhr-Uhr ist der Hammer

Dass eine Messuhr-Oberfläche auch für Zeitanzeigen sich eignen, darauf sind bislang die wenigsten gekommen. Vom Bastler AndyO stammt diese wunderbare Tischuhr, die nun aber genau das hinkriegt. Stunden links, Minuten rechts. Die Uhr wird über einen PIC18F2550-Chip gesteuert. Eingestellt wird sie via USB am PC, vielleicht das einzige Handicap, da man gerade "analoge" Uhren natürlich gerne autonom hält. Dennoch großartig. Die genaue Anleitung hinter der Quelle.

iPad Lock: Flunder endlich abschließbar

Die iPad Lock ist das, worauf einige vielleicht gewartet haben. Endlich das iPad per Schloss anschließen. Das iPad Lock der Firma Mac Locks ist das erste iPad Case, das an ein Stahlseil gedockt werden kann. Wer also auf erhöhte Sicherheit und Immobilität steht, sollte die 65 Dollar (49 Euro) für Hülle und Kabel locker machen. Die konkreten Anwendungsgebiete müsste man sich noch ausdenken. Eye of the storm ist das 4:33 der Armbanduhren

Minimalistischer geht es wahrscheinlich nicht. Der in China geborene und in Deutschland lebende Designer Yiran Qian hat die Armbanduhr "Eye of the storm" gestaltet, die vor allem dadurch in Augenschein tritt, dass eben nichts in Augenschein tritt. Ein großes Loch klafft da, wo sonst das Ziffernblatt zu finden sein müsste. Google Chrome OS Cr-48 Hands-On

Es geht doch nichts über eine neue Gattung auf dem Netbook-Markt. Das erste Chrome OS Laptop von Google mit 12,1 Zoll Bildschirm, Atom und SSD überzeugt in vielem und hat noch einen langen Weg vor sich. Es fühlt sich mit der matten schwarzen Oberfläche sehr gut an, und erinnert ein wenig an Droid, die Ähnlichkeit zum schwarzen MacBook ist nicht zu unterschätzen, bis hin zum magnetgehaltenen Schliessen, und der kleinen Einkerbung zum Öffnen. Wer auf der Suche nach einer neuen SSD Platte für sein Laptop ist, und keine Kosten scheut, für den ist die neue Samsung 470 256GB SSD möglicherweise genau das richtige. Mit rasanten Schreib und lese-Geschwindigkeiten hat die Platte jeden der Reviewer überzeugt. 3GB/s SATA mit zwei 128MB Cache-Chips. TRIM-Support für Windows 7. Die von Samsung angegebenen 250MB/s Schreib- und 220MB/s Lesegeschwindigkeit wird durchaus eingehalten bei größeren Files, und ist bei kleineren Files immer noch recht schnell. iPad 2 Cases enthüllen ein paar Änderungen (Video)

In China bastelt man schon an den Cases für das neue iPad und dort jedenfalls ist man sich einig wie es werden wird. Ein kleines Loch gibt es für die kommende Kamera, eins für das Dock und eins für die Kopfhörer wie immer, nur ein viertes bereitet noch Kopfzerbrechen, aber man kann annehmen, dass es sich einfach um die Öffnungen für die Lautsprecher handelt. Um das cloudbasierte Prinzip des Chrome-Netbooks Cr-48 wirklich anschaulich zu demonstrieren, splattert Chrome UX-Designer Glen Murphy das Gerät in einem Video mit allen möglichen und unmöglichen Methoden: Waschbecken drauf fallen lassen, in flüssigen Stickstoff tunken und vom Sporn durchbohren lassen oder einfach auf den Grill mit dem Rechner. Acer Iconia Doppelscreen Laptop ab Januar für 1500 Euro

Auf der CES 2011 soll er vorgestellt werden, aber jetzt gibt es schon mal ein neues Aussehen für dieses alberne, aber möglicherweise durchaus boomende Gadget, das einfach ein via Bluetooth ferngesteuerter Roboter-Ball ist, den man über den Tiltsensor des Handys laufen lassen kann. Burnside Phones: Außen Festnetz, innen Mobilfunk

Die britische Firma Burnside hat sich auf die Herstellung von Mobilfunktelefonen im Festnetz-Design spezialisiert, was durchaus Sinn machen kann, etwa bei (semi-)öffentlichen Wandtelefonen in Gegenden mit schlecht ausgebauter Festnetzinfrastruktur. Aber die Hauptzielgruppe der Mobilfunk-Festnetzapparate sind offensichtlich alte Menschen, denen Handys schlicht suspekt sind. Ubuntu One music streaming app updated with AirPlay support
DownloadSquad tipped us off that the Ubuntu One Music app has been updated to support Apple's new AirPlay streaming system. As such, it can now play music from your iOS device via any Apple TV or Airport Express unit on your network.

iPhone could be 'last man standing' in smartphone prices
The iPhone may end up as the "last man standing" amongst smartphones in terms of holding onto profits and prices, argues Needham & Co. analyst Charlie Wolf. Wolf notes that in the immediate future, competition amongst smartphone platforms -- namely Android and Windows Phone 7 -- may help phone makers like HTC and Motorola dictate prices. "A year or so ago you posted updates about your location during a trip from New England to home. Do you remember which tracking tool or website you used? A friend of mine is planning to bike across the country next summer and something like that would make his wife feel a lot better."
First I'm going to answer the question that he asked, and then I'm going to give some "better" answers.
Each year on Christmas Eve, I drive overnight for about 12 hours to my mother's house. BlackBerry in freefall at Verizon as Android takes over
The BlackBerry's influence at Verizon has nearly collapsed since Android reached the carrier, ITG Investment Research analyst Matthew Goodman said on Friday. RIM represented over 90 percent of Verizon's smartphone sales as recently as October 2009 but crashed almost immediately after the Motorola Droid arrived at Verizon a month later. It was about 30 years ago that Tascam introduced the first 4-track cassette recorder -- the Portastudio 144. In 1984, Tascam introduced the Porta One, a revolutionary product that many would argue kick-started the home recording studio as we know it today. Big Windows Phone 7 patch may widen multitasking in February
Microsoft's update to add copy and paste text to Windows Phone 7 may just be a prelude to much larger updates that put it more on par with Apple and Google, tips divulged this morning. Not-for-profits decry App Store block on tap-to-donate apps
Want to donate to a non-profit? There's no app for that. You'll have to go to a website and fill out the information there. This has led to some wailing and gnashing of teeth from non-profits who know that if they could reduce the "friction," more people would donate. It's the same reason that Amazon has an iPhone and iPad app plus another app especially designed just for the iPad, rather than requiring you to use their website: the easier it is for you to spend your money, the more are to do so.
So far the only app that was able to do this, for a time, was PayPal, but Apple eventually required that they remove that feature according to

News: Report: iPad 2G to have dual cameras and high-res display
The second-generation iPad will have both front- and rear-facing cameras, among several other improvements, according to a new report. Apple engineer re-creates Greek computer with LEGOs
It's fitting that an Apple software engineer would re-create what's possibly the world's oldest-known computer by using LEGOs.
Andrew Carol used around 1,500 LEGOs to re-create the Antikythera mechanism, a machine that ancient Greeks used to foretell celestial events. He made four gearboxes with 110 gears total, and when fed data, the machine will tell you when the next solar eclipse will occur. It's a beautiful and ingenious machine, and worth checking out the YouTube video. Maybe Carol's next project will be taking on the Mayans. You

Shape-memory polymer knows when it's hurt, fixes itself
We're no strangers to the futuristic catch-all idea of 'self-healing' -- it's one of the basic tent poles of many conceptions of tomorrow. That said, researchers are currently hard at work at Arizona State on a material that -- you guessed it -- can detect when it is damaged and, of course, heal itself. No doubt sensing a little heat from Apple's own AirPrint, Epson and Thinxstream have now announced that their PrintJinni wireless printing app for iOS devices will soon be available completely free of charge -- a permanent price drop, mind you, not simply a holiday promotion. Apple drops appeal of $21.7 million patent suit against OPTi
Another great day for the patent trolls: Apple has decided to stop throwing good money after bad in its case against OPTi, which has been awarded a US$21.7 million settlement, according to AppleInsider.
AppleInsider explains that the patent was for "predictive snooping" of "memory caches that speed the flow of data between a system's memory and processor." I have only a vague idea of what that even means, but apparently OPTi has decided that suing people is better than actually working for a living. AppleInsider says OPTi stopped being a manufacturing business and became a "full time patent-suing operation in 2003." The Antikythera Mechanism is what you call truly old school technology. Argued to be the world's oldest known computer, this ancient Greek invention was used some time circa 100BC to calculate and "predict celestial events and eclipses with unprecedented accuracy." Worldwide chip market expected to top $303 billion in 2011
The worldwide market for the semiconductor is expected to grow next year with revenues increasing by 9 percent year-over-year, according to a report. Research firm IDC says that this will take the total worldwide revenues for microchip sales to $303 billion, up from $276 billion in 2010. IDC also estimate that by 2015, the semiconductor market will grow to $380 billion.

YouTube lifting 15-minute time limit for some videos
YouTube has announced that it is in the process of removing the 15-minute time length restriction imposed on videos. While the limit has, so far, only been lifted with a few special content partners like National Geographic and Lonelygirl15 (a channel which apparently still has viewers), it should pave the way for longer videos for all moving forward. Briefly: Woz's white iPhone 4, CDMA engineers, WP7 developer changes
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak recently revealed that he has a white iPhone 4 that he modified himself using parts ordered online, while Apple has posted job listings for more engineers familiar with CDMA. Meanwhile, Microsoft moved up its pay date for Windows Phone 7 developers to January and finally added reporting tools to allow developers to keep track of download statistics for their applications.

WWF file format: it's like a PDF that's impossible to print

Mac App Store launching in January sans Game Center and in-app purchases?
"Less" and "later" are some of our least favorite words, but they may apply to the Mac App Store, as one source claims it will miss Christmas, and another says the marketplace will have fewer features than its iOS counterpart. Mac App Store: No in-app purchases, no Game Center
Developers bringing their apps to the forthcoming Mac App Store (now expected to launch in January) have been notified of a pair of additional restrictions by Apple, according to a post on their developer page for the store. At least for the time being, Apple is forbidding the use of in-app purchases in Mac apps hosted on the store, and has informed developers that Game Center will not be a part of it as well.

Sprint: 4G tablet coming in 2011
We can't begin explain our exasperation at running a Samsung Galaxy Tab on Sprint's 3G, knowing full well the WiMAX airwaves floating just overhead could make our experience speedy. Thankfully, we won't have to dwell on our frustration for long, because a Sprint executive told Forbes that a 4G tablet will arrive in 2011. Study: iPads offer print journalism good and bad news
A survey of 1,600 iPad owners conducted by the David W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri delivers a mixed bag of news for the world of print journalism. On the plus side, the survey found that most iPad owners spend a substantive amount of time reading news on the iPad, and enjoy reading both international and local news via specific newspaper and news-service apps. The bad news is that those same happy readers are the very ones abandoning print editions.

Flash working poorly on your Google Cr-48? Adobe's working on it

Debunk: Apple not hunting specifically for CDMA engineers
A discovery today of an Apple job listing for a Cellular Systems Performance Engineer with CDMA experience has drawn some attention as extra evidence that Apple is developing a Verizon iPhone. Patent application suggests contextual voice commands for iPhone
A patent application filed by Apple in 2009 but just released to the public last week shows that they want to improve on the voice command abilities of the iPhone. As reported by AppleInsider, the patent looks as though it would make voice commands available in individual applications rather than system-wide, narrowing down the possibilities to a chosen few commands and drastically reducing the chances of the iPhone making a mistake.

FLO TV rebates for devices and service are now live
FLO TV said that it would be refunding the eight folks who actually bought into its services once it made the tough decision to shut things down on March 27, 2011, and lo and behold, it's a promise kept. Adobe vows fix for sluggish Flash in Chrome OS
Adobe's Senior Director of Engineering Paul Betlem apologized on Thursday for the state of Flash in Chrome OS on the Cr-48 netbook. Following criticisms (and Electronista impressions) that Flash on the netbook is very sluggish and often unusable for video, Betlem acknowledged that hardware video acceleration and optimization wasn't in place. He declined to give a timeframe but did say the update would come automatically.

iPad Wi-Fi issue with iOS 4.2.1 frustrating some, nonexistent for many
We've received a blitz of emails from TUAW readers who have been pulling their hair out about an issue that appeared after they upgraded their iPads to iOS 4.2.1.
As described by lots of users in the Apple support forums, Wi-Fi connectivity slowed dramatically after the upgrade. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the slowdown, as it is affecting new and older iPads, people using Apple or third-party Wi-Fi routers, and a number of other variables.

Aperture update fixes several bugs
Apple has released an update to its photography software, Aperture.
