Sprint wouldn't mind if T-Mobile bought 4G spectrum from Clearwire

Considering Sprint's heavy investment in Clearwire -- and the fact that it shares its WiMAX network with the company -- you can understand why it might be a little weary of letting other carriers in on the spectrum. European iPhone discounts softened, built-in SIM plan blamed

Apple's rumored fight over embedded iPhone SIMs may have cost it valuable carrier discounts. Sanford Bernstein analyst Robin Bienenstock noted that subsidies in larger European countries had been reduced by 40 to 150 euros ($53 to $198). The carriers had also pulled promo graphics from their main pages, the analyst said, suggesting they may have been reluctant to keep giving the phone its full attention.

Silicon Alley Insider has put together a chart that shows the approval ratings employees have for various CEOs at major tech companies. The chart is based on data from Glassdoor.com and reveals that Steve Jobs is the most-favored CEO, ranked by his own employees, followed closely by Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and Eric Schmidt of Google. Verizon confirms contract-free 4G LTE options: same rates, pricier modems

Verizon didn't make any mention of it during it's big announcement yesterday, but PC Magazine's Sascha Seagan has confirmed with the carrier that it will indeed be offering its 4G LTE service off-contract as well. That will actually come in at the same rates as the on-contract pricing -- $50 for 5GB or $80 for 10GB, plus a $10 per GB overage -- but you'll have to shell out a full $249.99 for the modem, as opposed to just $99.99 on a two-year contract (after a $50 mail-in rebate).

Gowalla 3 marks truce, checks into Foursquare, Facebook

Gowalla, the check-in service that competed with Foursquare, has opted out of direct competition and has now released Gowalla 3.0 for iPhone (free, App Store) to let users link to their Foursquare and Facebook accounts. The app also lets users view their friends' check-ins from the three services. The user interface is also now slightly improved, with the check-in button accessible from the toolbar.

Guardian to switch to subscription-based app

UK newspaper The Guardian will soon withdraw its current iPhone app in favor of one based on subscriptions, according to an announcement. For residents of the UK, the future app will cost £3 for six months, and £4 for a full year. In the US the app will be free, ditching a present $4 pricetag at the expense of advertising.

Actually, you can create great looking frames for all your digital images, not just your holiday snapshots. I've spent part of the day playing with ImageFramer 3 from Apparent Software, a Mac utility that allows you to create frames and mats to give you just about any style you can imagine. If you don't want to choose from the more than 400 that come with the program, you can create your own using patterns you make in a photo editor like Photoshop. Apple axes compact Wired Keyboard, beefs up Universal Dock

Early reports have revealed that Apple has quietly dropped its compact Wired Keyboard but has simultaneously upgraded its Universal Dock. Listings at retailers show the model as "discontinued," and Apple itself no longer lists the compact version. MeeGo-based Intel Atom phone and tablet spotted from Russia with love

First the 2018 World Cup and now this. An Intel press event in Moscow was reportedly the site of some new MeeGo device reveals. Mail.ru's Anton Spiridonov was on hand and managed to spot Intel Atom-based phone the Hi/Lo Vibrant (we haven't heard of the company, either) and a tablet of some sort, both equipped with the Linux-based OS. This morning Erica asked me to take a look at a post she had written about how well the iPad works as a laptop replacement. Although I agree with many of the points she makes in the post, I have to vehemently disagree with the entire idea that an iPad can be a true laptop replacement in times of need. BMW Designworks USA flexes its eco muscle with Siemens Inspiro subway concept

BMW Group's Designworks USA -- where have we heard about those folks before? Ah, yes, that's the crew that's responsible for Thermaltake's Level 10 PC case, and we're desperately hoping that this concept has an equal (or greater) level of success in the open market. The subway car you see above is purportedly 97.5 percent recyclable, with an aluminum chassis, vivacious hues and a ridiculously spacious interior. Zynga acquires mobile gaming startup Newtoy

Zynga has announced that it has acquired Newtoy, a Texas-based developer best known for the Games With Friends series of mobile apps. The Newtoy headquarters in McKinney, Texas will now become The Zynga With Friends Studio. The startup's multiplayer platform is said to have attracted a community of over 500,000 players.

Apple pulls Manhattan Declaration app following petition

Online petition hosting site Change.org is crediting one of its campaigns for the removal of a potentially offensive app. The app promoted the Manhattan Declaration, a manifesto created and supported by conservative Christians such as Charles Colson and James Dobson. Apple compact wired keyboard gets discontinued

AppleInsider notes that Apple has quietly discontinued its compact wired keyboard. The keyboard, which has the part number MB869LL/A, has been removed from Apple's online store, yet is still available (presumably, while supplies last) on Amazon for US$46.99. Netflix may pay $100,000 per show to get current TV online

Netflix has been pressing hard to get current TV shows on Watch Instantly, according to rumors surrounding negotiations. The company reportedly said it was willing to pay between $70,000 and $100,000 per episode if it meant getting access to a given season while still on the air. Most of the "friction" in the discussions, the New York Post's sources said, has been TV broadcast owners arguing that they have rights over current-season TV that even the show producers themselves would lack.

Rambus sues NVIDIA, five more in threat to industry

Rambus late Wednesday sued six semiconductor firms in a patent dispute that could jeopardize electronics. The multiple suits filed in a Northern District of California court accuse Broadcom, Freescale, LSI, MediaTek, NVIDIA and STMicro of copying Rambus technology for DDR memory, including GDDR memory for graphics, as well as common connection standards such as DisplayPort, PCI Express, SAS and SATA. It claimed ownership of some of the techniques after having bought the patents from Velio Communications in 2003, EETimes noted.

Over the counter, spray-on stem cell treatment could treat burns on the go

Research at the University of Utah could lead to burn treatment on the go that makes use of your body's own cells. Surgeons Amit Patel and Amalia Cochran are researching the use of stem cells in conjunction with several chemicals as a spray-on jelly which has, in early testing, shown to accelerate the healing process of burns. While the team is starting with small burns, its goal is to be able to provide fast and effective, actual regeneration of a patient's own cells to be grafted onto large area burns. Acer's mobile lead Aymar de Lencquesaing in an interview today warned that the whole smartphone industry, not just Acer, was facing a shortage. Chinese iPhone sales 'disappointing' says analyst

Sales of Chinese iPhones have been "somewhat disappointing," says Morgan Keegan's Travis McCourt. The analyst claims that while the smartphone market has "exploded" in China during 2010, growing 200 percent year-over-year, Apple and BlackBerry maker RIM sold less than 500,000 phones last quarter. BlackBerries, in fact, are still only being sold to government and businesses in the country, according to McCourt. Apple and China Unicom have not officially announced recent iPhone numbers.

Filed under: Games Wir hatten eben ja schon Gaikai erwähnt, als Weiterführung des Game-Streaming-Trends, der mit OnLive losgebrochen ist, und schon haben wir mehr. GameString zeigt uns ein Demo (Video nach dem Break) von World Of Warcraft als Stream auf einem HTC Desire. Der Trick: diverse Bedienelemente des Spiels werden touchfreundlich über die eigentliche Action gelegt. Das alles ist noch Alpha, hat einen manchmal harten Lag, und wirkt noch etwas zu klein in den Tasten um es wirklich zu nutzen. Aber 2Mbps scheinen zumindest schon etwas zu bringen.

Zynga buys Newtoy, studio rebranded as Zynga With Friends

Well how about this -- Facebook and social game giant Zynga has bought up iPhone developer Newtoy, makers of the popular Games with Friends apps, including Words with Friends and Chess with Friends. Newtoy has now been rebranded as Zynga With Friends, and will apparently be working on new titles for Zynga in their own style. The iTunes Store is a great place to find episodes of TV shows that you might have missed, or even catch up on past seasons, but it's only one of several options available. Motorola chief hints at 4G phones, Verizon iPhone at event

Motorola's co-CEO Sanjay Jha dropped strong hints of future plans, as well as those from Apple, at the Credit Suisse conference on Wednesday. Clearwire ships Clear 4G modem with Wi-Fi for homes

Clearwire on Thursday shipped its Clear Modem with Wi-Fi. It will let users link their Wi-Fi devices to Clear's 4G network from a relatively static area like a home or office, offering wireless download speeds of between 3 and 6Mbps, with bursts as fast as 10Mbps. Google's latest OS distrubution chart published today revealed that Android 2.2 has finally become the most-used single version of the platform. As of the start of December, 43.4 percent of phones are using the OS, up from 36 percent last month. Apple to control mobile market in 2011, claims analyst

Apple will "maintain both market and profit share leadership" in mobile devices during 2011, claims Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley. The statement is founded on "continued strong sell-through trends for the iPad and iPhone," including a series of bulletpoint facts. During the third quarter of the year, for instance, Apple is said to have had 47 percent of industry profits for mobile devices and tablets; the next closest competitor is thought to have been RIM at 18 percent. OnLive offers up $10 montly PlayPack for subscription gaming

OnLive today tried a new business model for its streaming gaming service for those wanting an alternative to per-title access. The PlayPack gives users access to at least 40 older but high-profile games, such as the recent Prince of Persia remake and LEGO Batman, for $10 per month. Alright, you caught us. We're suckers for speedy, unrealistically optimized boot times. The fine folks at Linux for Devices just highlighted two major players on the horizon: Lineo's Warp 2, which is about to launch; and MPC Data's SwiftBoot, which is now available. Both of them are less of a "boot" and more of a "wake from hibernation" sort of thing, but most of the issues are the same -- you still have to boot a kernel, whether or not you're gonna populate the system with a saved state when it's ready. Lineo is booting up Fedora Linux 12 on an Atom Z530 machine, and has just hit the 4.06 second mark -- compared to a 54.72 second "normal" boot time on the system. Meanwhile, MPC

Flipboard today made a claim to becoming a full tablet magazine producer today by adding a framework to its iPad app (free, App Store) with special versions of sites as well as ads. Known as Flipboard Pages, the format takes the content from publishers and turns it into an HTML5-based, multi-page layout that more closely resembles a paper magazine. Apple supplier Wintek ups 10-inch touchpanel production

One of Apple's key suppliers, Wintek, is planning to expand its capacity for producing 10-inch touchpanels. Chairman Hyley Huang says the company is adding the capacity to produce an extra 2.2 million panels a month at its Taichung plant in Taiwan. Google starts sandboxing Flash in Chromium; Chrome soon

Google late Wednesday revealed that it has acted on its longstanding promise to sandbox Flash in its web browser. Starting with the open-source Chromium version for Windows, Adobe's plugin will block off access to certain vital parts of the browser code to prevent some if not most security exploits. Study: 85% prefer iPad over Galaxy Tab, both must cost less

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster today posted the results of a study that suggested Samsung's Galaxy Tab was having little effect on the iPad's appeal. When asked, 85 percent of a group new to tablets chose Apple's tablet over the Galaxy Tab, which mustered just 15 percent. The choice came in spite of Samsung trying to compete mostly on features with dual cameras.

It's right smack dab in the middle of Bologna, Italy, a place where I'd imagine you probably shouldn't believe anything you hear. Denn das Galaxy S mini scheint uns in keinster Weise kleiner oder kompakter zu sein, als das Original von Samsung. Gut, das Display mit ein halbes Zoll kleiner (3,5" im Gegensatz zu 4" beim Original), dafür hat der chinesisch Nachmacher um die Hüften deutlich zugelegt. Und auch alles andere macht keinen Spaß. Am besten sind nich die 5-Megapixel-Kamera und je 512MB Speicher im RAM und ROM. Das Display ist natürlich nicht aus der AMOLED-Klasse und mit 320x480p wirklich alles andere als aktuell

Vom Design her folgt der neue Curve 8900, dem letzten EDGE-Klassiker vom RIM, ein wenig Bold-Design ist aber auch dabei und mit dem aktuellen Curve 3G hat er nicht wirklich viel zu tun. Zu Zeiten als Weltmeere noch von 1. Survey: XServe owners staying put, no transition plans (yet)

IT companies hoping to find a rich vein of new business assisting enterprises in moving away from Apple server hardware after the discontinuation of the XServe may be disappointed with the preliminary results of a survey conducted by the Enterprise Desktop Alliance, an industry group that represents such organizations. The survey has found that XServe owners mostly plan to stick with their current machines through the normal replacement cycle, and even then a substation portion plan to shift to other Apple-based alternatives rather than move to Windows or Linux.

Apple, Facebook top CEO approval ranks, Microsoft much lower

An updated list of CEO approval ratings from Glassdoor has shown a wide disparity between some technology firms' executives. Apple's Steve Jobs, Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and Google's Eric Schmidt lead the group, all claiming 96 to 97 percent approval from their staff on the site. Rivals were much lower, however, and saw MySpace president Mike Jones at 60 percent, Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz at 56 and Microsoft's Steve Ballmer at a particularly low 49 percent.
