XCOM: Enemy Unknown now available for iOS
The long-awaited XCOM: Enemy Unknown has finally arrived on the App Store for a premium price of US$19.99. This is Firaxis' turn-based strategy hit from last year (in my opinion, one of the best games of 2012), translated to the iOS platform in full. The controls have been tweaked just a bit to work with the iOS touchscreen, but otherwise this is the full game, featuring a base that you can upgrade at will, soldiers that you can outfit with bleeding edge technology, and terrific turn-based skirmishes against aliens of all kinds.

Video on Instagram hands-on
Facebook's Video on Instagram is undoubtedly riding on Vine's coattails, but is it any good? We gave the app a quick shakedown on both Android and iOS, and it's safe to say the answer is "yes." Logitech debuts standalone version of Harmony Ultimate Hub
Logitech has introduced a standalone version of the Harmony Ultimate Hub, a peripheral previously bundled only with the company's Harmony Ultimate and Harmony Smart Control remotes. After downloading a special app, the unit lets iPhone/iPod and Android owners control up to eight home theater devices. Users can for example swipe to adjust volume, change a TV's channel by tapping on network icons, and control recorded video playback.

Early Mac Pro benchmarks show major speed increase
The new Mac Pro isn't supposed to launch until later on this year, but Geekbench has nabbed a new set of benchmarking tests which appear to be from the new machine itself. The computer is labeled as "AAPLJ90,1" in the report, which seems strange, considering that a retail build would probably be listed as "MacPro6,1." But perhaps that "J90" is a code name of some sort, suggesting a pre-release build.
The machine in question is running a 12-core processor, and 64 GB (!) of RAM, along with a pre-release build (Build 13A2054) of OS X 10.9, which we now know as OS X Mavericks. The motherboard ID also matches one known to be in the new Mac Pro, so it's likely this set of benchmark results is legit

New MacBook Airs suffering from the Wi-Fi blues
One problem with being an early adopter when it comes to new hardware and software is that you run the risk of being an unintended beta tester. Those who ran out last week and bought the new MacBook Air models with their improved specs and battery life may be wishing they'd waited a bit; a few thousand owners are complaining in the Apple Support Forums about a similar issue that's occurring with Wi-Fi on the skinny notebooks.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active hands-on (video)
Ah, the Galaxy S4 Active: it's like the regular Galaxy S4 but, you know, more ruggeder. It's actually not a truly rugged device, since it hasn't been built to military specifications, but it's certainly designed to stand up to slightly more abuse than its non-Active namesake. HBO Moved Development In-House to Speed Apple TV Project
On Wednesday, Apple released a long awaited update that brought new channels to its Apple TV, including WatchESPN, Sky News, and HBO GO. Instagram 4.0 for iPhone out with video support
Instagram has announced the biggest update to their service since its launch in 2010; the addition of video. The move is directly targeting Twitter's Vine app by introducing longer videos than Vine allows directly in a feed that millions of users are checking every day. Instagram's videos can be up to 15 seconds in length while Vine still tops out out 6 seconds.
In addition Instagram video comes with 13 video filters so users can make their HD cell phone cameras look like 80s VHS tape to match their 70s filtered breakfast shots. Famed German designer Richard Sapper has revealed in an interview with Dezeen that Steve Jobs once wanted to hire him to design Apple's computers:

'Icebreaker: A Viking Voyage' is Rovio Publishing's First Game [iOS Blog]
Last month, Angry Birds-maker Rovio announced that it would soon be releasing "the best new games" on its own publishing label called Rovio Stars. Samsung ATIV Tab 3 hands-on
Well, we're no closer to finding out whether or not this is indeed the world's thinnest Windows 8 tablet, but we can confirm that the ATIV Tab 3 is stunningly thin. In fact, it's as svelte as its iOS and Android competitors, claiming the title of thinnest Windows 8 tablet yet, at 8.22mm. Samsung's following the design lines of its Galaxy range -- aside from the Windows button beneath the screen, at a distance you'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the ATIV Tab 3 and recent Galaxy Tabs. Some new MacBook Airs suffering from Wi-Fi connection problems
Some owners of the new MacBook Air are having problems with intermittent or non-functional Wi-Fi connections, a large thread on Apple's support forums indicates. The source of the problems is unclear though, as the people complaining have different network situations and configurations, including different routers. Some people in the thread are also complaining about other MacBooks experiencing trouble.

Apple announces 2013 summer filmmaking camps at Apple Stores
Apple has announced the 2013 slate of its annual Apple Camps for kids, which are hosted at Apple Stores. The focus this year is on producing a short iMovie clip using self-shot footage, with a soundtrack produced in the iPad version of GarageBand. Each workshop will stretch over three days, ending with the videos being shown at a camp film festival.

Hands-on with Logitech's Harmony Hub and Harmony Control app
I'll be the first to admit that I'm probably not the biggest fan of remote controls. Over the years, my wife and I have accumulated a literal basketful of remotes. There's one for the HDTV, one for the Blu-Ray, one for the Comcast DVR. Add to that the controls for the Bose surround sound system, the HDMI hub that doesn't work and the Apple TV, and it's no wonder I hate video in all of its many forms.
At one point, I had a really bad experience with the Logitech Harmony One "universal remote" that was supposed to free me from all of those remotes. Well, it worked occasionally, but it was a pain to program, not all of the devices we had in our media center were supported, and chained events -- like "turn on the surround sound, then turn on the TV, and then turn on the DVR" never worked quite righ

Das Ativ Tab 3 läuft mit Windows 8, ist 8,2 Millimeter dünn und kommt mit 2 GB RAM. Der Prozessor ist ein Intel Atom Z2760, was zu einer Batterielaufzeit von achteinhalb Stunden führen soll.

Withings taking pre-orders for new Pulse activity tracker
When it comes to the "connected health device" market, the leader has been Withings. The company started selling its first Wi-Fi connected scale back in 2010, and since then has added such devices as a baby scale and a blood pressure monitor to the product mix. On Friday, the US branch of Best Buy will be launching another promotion in which shoppers can get a "free" iPhone 5. People who bring in an iPhone 4 or 4S in good condition can get at least $150 in credit, which is enough to cover most of the cost of a 16GB iPhone 5 with Best Buy's current $50 instant rebate. IDC: iPhone marketshare in China now at 9%
According to a recent research report from IDC, Apple's iPhone amassed a 9% share in the Chinese smartphone market during the first quarter of 2013. The iPhone now is the 5th most popular smartphone in China with Samsung taking the top spot with a 19% share.
While Apple's marketshare may not seem all that impressive on the surface, the report notes that iPhone growth in the country is outpacing overall smartphone growth by a wide margin. Specifically, IDC found that iPhone 4 sales grew by 211% compared to just 117% for the rest of the market.
While the data from competing research firms can tend to vary wildly, it's worth pointing out that Canalys back in May found that

Today's big Facebook announcement was Video on Instagram, and to accompany that new feature the company unveiled Cinema stabilization, meant to improve the quality (read: decrease the wobbliness) of your 15-second clips. Apple and its advertising firm TBWA Media Arts Lab have won the prestigious Grand Prix for Press award for a recent print campaign advertising the iPad mini. The ad's clever images depicted a life-sized iPad mini on the back cover of several magazines, which itself bore the cover of said magazine. Apple Retail Announces 2013 Summer Filmmaking Camps for Kids
As it has in prior years, Apple is offering free summer camps for kids 8-12 at its retail stores, this year focusing on filmmaking with iMovie. The classes span three days, 90 minutes per day, with an introduction to the basics of movie making, GarageBand on the iPad, iMovie on the Mac, and then a film festival on the third day to screen movies for family and friends. The screenings are optional. Apple also provides an optional, one-hour Parents Workshop on the first day that teaches parents how to set up parental controls on Apple devices. Apple, Amazon still without settlement in 'app store' lawsuit
Apple and Amazon have yet to come to a settlement in the former's lawsuit over the term "app store," notes AppleInsider. The two parties were ordered to try and settle the case in January, but haven't made any progress despite multiple talks. Barnes & Noble VP delivers a bruising blow to DOJ case against Apple
Apple received a boost in its defense against the Department of Justice allegations about ebook price fixing yesterday from a company that had already settled in the case: Barnes & Noble. The bookseller's Vice President of Digital Content, Theresa Horner, told the court that her company was in the process of negotiating agency pricing deals with publishers well before Apple came into the ebook market.

Tile: Crowdfunding a community driven device to keep track of your stuff
We all lose our stuff. It's part of life; you accidentally leave your favorite jacket at a restaurant, your wallet falls out of your pocket into a shrub, or somebody decides that they like your bike more than the fixer they're riding. A new company, Tile, has plans for a unique way to figure out where your stuff is at all times and they're looking for just US$20,000 in crowdsourced funding to start production.
Tile's self-named product is a tiny Bluetooth LE device that you attach to or embed in something that you don't want to lose. Clip one to a bike, stick one in the pocket of your jacket or your wallet, and even put one on the dog's collar. A US$25 Tile has battery life for one year, at which time you'll need to replace it and recycle the old one for reuse

Apple hit with new patent lawsuit, this one for call forwarding
Another day, another patent lawsuit. Earlier this week, Apple was served with a lawsuit from a Texas-based company called Bluebonnet Telecommunications which alleges that the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 include a call-forwarding feature that infringes upon a patent of theirs which covers a "method and apparatus for determining the telephony features assigned to a telephone."
The patent in question was originally granted to Bluebonnet Telecommunications back in 1996.

Gizmodo reports on a growing number of complaints from owners of Apple's newly updated MacBook Air regarding Wi-Fi performance issues. Pegatron Chairman Says Lower-Cost iPhone Will Not Be Cheap
Last month, J.P. Morgan analysts made their case for why Apple will position its rumored lower-cost iPhone as a "mid-end" device priced in the range of $350-$400 without subsidies, addressing a relatively sparse segment of the market while still maintaining the ability to offer a quality user experience. Macotakara now points to a pair of reports from the China Times including claims from Pegatron chairman T.H. Tung supporting that notion. Erster Benchmark des kommenden Mac Pro aufgetaucht?
Eine Woche nach der Präsentation des neuen Mac Pro ist in der Datenbank der Benchmark-Software «Geekbench» ein Mac mit der Kennzeichnung «AAPLJ90,1» aufgetaucht. Gerüchten zufolge könnte es sich dabei um den ersten Benchmark des neuen Mac Pro handeln. Der mutmassliche Mac Pro kommt im Test auf einen Wert von 23’901 Punkten. Dieses Modell übertrifft damit den Mac Pro aus dem Jahr 2012, welcher auf einen durchschnittlichen Wert von 21’980 Punkten kommt. Maximal erreichte der Mac Pro aus dem Jahr 2012 22’971 Punkte.
Den Daten von Geekbench zufolge wäre der neue Mac Pro mit einem Intel Xeon E5-2697 Prozessor ausgerüstet, welcher mit 2.7 GHz getaktet ist. A recently published Apple patent shows that the company is exploring a fingerprint scanner that can be included in a conductive bezel on a device. In the described invention, the user would swipe his or her finger over a surface of a sensor. Twitter heat map shows iPhones dominate affluent areas
Mapping software company MapBox has created an incredible interactive map that highlights the devices that are used with Twitter across the world. The map looks at over 280 million tweets sent from iPhones, Android phones, BlackBerry devices and more, and plots all of that data by geographic location.
As one might expect, the wealthier, more affluent countries have the most tweets sent from iPhones, while those in poorer countries typically use lower-cost mobile phones from BlackBerry and a few Android handsets.

NVIDIA's Shield now $300, arrives on June 27th (video)
Even before hitting store shelves, NVIDIA's Shield is shedding $50 from its original $350 asking price -- the little Android portable gaming console will cost $300 when it arrives at retail on June 27th. Sony Xperia Z Ultra screenshots leak, confirm 6.4-inch display
Screenshots from Sony's forthcoming Xperia Z Ultra have been leaked and confirm that the device will sport an oversize 6.4-inch 1080p display with a density of 342 pixels per inch. The screenshots also show that that the device will also be among the first to run Qualcomm's Snapgradon 800 quad-core processor clocked at an impressive 2.2GHz. Rovio Stars says publishing was a 'logical step' for Angry Birds maker to take
The good folks at 148Apps have an interview up with Kalle Kaivola, Senior VP of Product and Publishing at Rovio, about the company's new Rovio Stars program, a publishing initiative putting out third-party titles under the Rovio banner. Kaivola says publishing was "was a pretty logical step" -- the company has extensive experience, of course, putting things out on the App Store, and sees creative titles being pitched all the time. And in a more practical sense, the company of course has a stable of successful games on the App Store already, set to be used as a platform for launching other titles as needed.

Für die Virtualisierungslösung Parallels Desktop 8 ist ein Update erschienen. Mit der neuen Version ist es möglich, die Entwickler-Version von OS X 10.9 Mavericks in einem virtuellen Computer zu testen oder diese als Host-Maschine zu verwenden. NEC Terrain: Android bekommt mal wieder ein QWERTZ-Keyboard

Zumindest in den USA haben die Freunde physikalischer Keyboards im Android-Land jetzt eine neue Alternative: AT&T nimmt das NEC Terrain ins Programm. Keine große Sache. Denn auch wenn das Smartphone mit LTE ausgestattet ist, sind die restlichen Spezifikationen nicht gerade auf der Höhe der Zeit. Den Snapdragon S4 (zwei Kerne, 1,5 GHz) nehmen wir noch hin. Dass auf dem Telefon jedoch lediglich Android 4.0 läuft, ist eine Enttäuschung, Vanilla Android hin oder her. Apple verteilt erste OS-X-10.8.5-Vorabversion an Entwickler
Apple hat im Verlauf des gestrigen Tages die erste Vorabversion von OS X 10.8.5 an registrierte Entwickler verteilt. Diese erste Beta-Version von OS X 10.8.5 trägt die Build-Nummer 12F9. Wie den Release-Notes von Apple nach zu urteilen ist, dürfte das Update keine neuen Funktionen sondern nur Fehlerbehebungen beinhalten.
Die Entwickler sollen sich bei dieser neuen Vorabversion vor allem auf die Bereiche WiFi und Grafik-Treiber, sowie die PDF-Anzeige und das Aufwachen nach dem Ruhezustand fokussieren. WiFi und Grafik-Treiber standen bereits bei den zahlreichen Vorabversionen von OS X 10.8.3 und 10.8.4 im Zentrum des Interesses.

After having begun the case against Apple brought by the Department of Justice with a set of blistering opinions that essentially concluded the iPhone maker was guilty of the e-book price-fixing charge against it, Judge Denise Cote has been seen to change her position considerably over the course of the trial. Maine MLTI schools overwhelmingly choose Apple over mandated HP
When Maine schools were given the choice for the first time under the next school year's Maine Learning Technology Initiative (MLTI) between Windows-based laptops, the Apple iPad, and the Apple MacBook Air, the schools overwhelmingly chose Apple products. Of 69,059 hardware orders placed, 92 percent of the purchases will come from Apple.

IDC: Apple tripled iPhone share in China in Q1, leaps to fifth place
Market analysis firm IDC has released its latest figures on smartphone share in China, and reports that Apple has achieved a nine percent share of the estimated 78 million smartphones sold in China during the first three months of 2013, a rise of 117 percent year-over year. While all of the top vendors did well, Apple -- led by its entry-level iPhone 4 -- grew at an annual rate of 211 percent. Another survey firm, Canalys, gave Apple an eight percent share but also ranked it in fifth place among manufacturers, about double the prevailing view on the company's marketshare in China.

Apple's New Mac Pro Begins Showing Up in Benchmarks
While Apple offered a sneak peek at its dramatically redesigned Mac Pro at its Worldwide Developers Conference, the new machine is not scheduled to launch until "later this year" and the company has yet to reveal detailed specs and pricing information. But if a new Geekbench result is authentic, it appears that the new machine is already starting to show up in public benchmarking databases. Rdio opens up Vdio to users in US, UK with per-show, film pricing
Video streaming service Vdio has exited its pre-release phase and is now open to users in the United States and the United Kingdom. The service, created by streaming music provider Rdio, will allow anyone in the two countries, including those not subscribed to Rdio, to access the service through the website and through its companion iPad app.

Apple Testing Expanded iPhone Repair Options Through Authorized Service Providers in Canada
Apple has launched an iPhone repair pilot program for Apple Certified Service Providers in Canada that will allow certain certified centers to offer iPhone repairs after store technicians have completed Apple-required iOS Certification. According to a tipster, the third party service sites will be able to offer repairs for the battery, camera, speaker, and more, after the program launches in the next few weeks. In addition to passing an iOS Qualification exam, Service Provider technicians have also been required to attend several training sessions to learn how to disassemble the iPhone. While the program is currently limited to Canada, it seems reasonable to suspect that it may roll out to other countries in the future should the test run prove successful. Best Buy Recalls Third-Party MacBook Batteries Over Fire Risk [Mac Blog]
Best Buy has recalled 5,100 third-party replacement MacBook batteries after at least 13 reports of the batteries catching fire. Both the black and white varieties sold between September 2008 and June 2012 -- unit numbers MC-MBOOK13B and MC-MBOOK13W -- have been recalled and Best Buy will give customers replacements or a Best Buy gift card. Best Buy did note that they were not the only company to sell the batteries. Third-party replacement MacBook batteries recalled for fire risk
Retailer Best Buy is recalling 5,100 third-party battery replacements for the black and white MacBooks, made by a company called ATG and sold through the retailer's Geek Squad service division or online between 2008 and mid-2012 due to the risk of overheating and fire. The US Product Safety Commission has collected 13 reports of incidents with the replacement batteries, including one where the buyer suffered a serious burn on their leg. The batteries are also sold through other retailers, but only Best Buy has initiated a recall at this point.

MakerBot snapped up by Stratasys, companies will operate independently
Fabrication powerhouse Stratasys and startup 3D printer manufacturer MakerBot have merged. Under the terms of the deal, the pair of companies are merging in a stock-for-stock transaction worth $604 million, with two-thirds payable immediately as stock, with the remaining third depending on MakerBot performance following the merger. The deal is expected to close in the fall.

After you grant access to your camera roll, PhotoCollage lets you select multiple images and use pre-defined templates. Don't care for those templates? Famed Designer Richard Sapper Was Once Recruited by Steve Jobs [Mac Blog]
In an interview with design magazine Dezeen, German industrial designer Richard Sapper revealed that he was once recruited by Steve Jobs to do design work for Apple. Lytro announces iOS app, unlocks hidden Wi-Fi feature in camera
Today's news brings a pleasant surprise for Lytro camera owners. It turns out the that each one of the small light field cameras has had a hidden Wi-Fi chip inside, waiting to be turned on. Well, the time for activation has come with the release of a new firmware update which activates the Wi-Fi. And just in time for the release of Lytro's new iOS app.
The app, called Lytro Mobile, connects to your iPhone via the Wi-Fi transmitter and allows you to view camera images from your iOS device. Once you activate the app simply click the Camera feature and you will be told to select Wi-Fi from the Lytro's menu screen. Once you tap the Wi-Fi option on your Lytro screen you will be able to wirelessly upload images directly to Lytro.com.
