China Unicom takes over 200K iPhone 5 reservations
China Unicom has already recorded over 200,000 reservations for the iPhone 5, the carrier has announced. It hit the mark in just two days, doubling the 100,000 achieved during the first day. Unicom is also saying that it will offer a full subsidy for the handset, but with a minimum deposit of 5,899 RMB (about $947 US) for a 16GB model. That money will be refunded on a monthly basis, with the exact credit depending on the length of the contract. 32 and 64GB models are also available, but with higher deposits.

T-Mobile ceasing phone subsidies in 2013
During Deutsche Telekom's annual investor conference, T-Mobile CEO John Legere announced his intent to do away with subsidies for cellphone purchases with contracts. Legere said that customers will pay an upfront fee for the devices, and pay the remainder of the phone's value in affordable monthly installments.

Foxconn seeks to expand North American manufacturing operations
On the same day we started hearing about Apple's plans to manufacture an undisclosed Mac product in the United States, a Bloomberg report indicates that Apple's largest manufacturing partner, China's Foxconn, is looking to increase its presence in North America. Coincidence? Neither company is divulging specifics of their plans, but the timing is interesting.

My Mac mini is my 2012 tech boyfriend
As 2012 draws to a close, I'm happy to report that I am totally in love with my new Mac mini. It boots like a dream. Its Fusion drive seamlessly and invisibly manages my data, keeping the files system snappy and responsive. Even Xcode, bane of my existence, crashes faster and more smoothly than it did on my old system.
My new setup, which set me back just under $1100 after all was said and done, is a fully loaded 2.6GHz Intel Core i7. I self-service upgraded the memory to 16GB (thanks Josh for convincing me that I could do it all on my own!). I connected existing monitors (courtesy of sales at Costco),

Apple snaps up former Microsoft security expert
Kristen Paget was part of an elite team of security experts hired by Microsoft to rid Windows Vista of glaring exploits. Now, as reported by Wired, she's been brought on by Apple to lend her expertise to securing the company's operating systems.
Paget's exact charge at Apple is still somewhat of a mystery, with company representatives declining to comment on the specifics of what she'll be working on. After leaving Microsoft and prior to her move to 1 Infinite Loop, Paget was employed by security firm Recursion Ventures. Wired reports that, this past July, she'd departed stating that she wished to focus on developing security-related hardware.

IDC: Apple slipped to sixth in China smartphone share in Q3, Samsung and locals sat on top
The Chinese smartphone market is a tough nut to crack given its sensitivity to prices and a slew of strong domestic brands. IDC estimates suggest Apple may have learned this the hard way during the third quarter of this year: it slipped from fourth place in local market share during the second quarter to sixth. Samsung kept out in front, but everyone else who knocked Apple down a couple of pegs was from the neighborhood, starting with second-place Lenovo followed by Coolpad, ZTE and Huawei. Hands-on: RHA MA450i earbuds for iPhone, iPad, iPod
Recently MacNN had a chance to test the RHA MA450i, a pair of earbuds aimed at owners of Apple iOS devices. The difference is an inline remote, which can be used to take calls, change tracks or volume, and issue Siri commands. In general, this works just as you'd expect. The remote is located near the right earbud, which might be awkward for some, but is relatively easy to get used to. Google gives WWF $5 million to fund wildlife-observing drones
Most of the drone-related news these days may focus on military or police use, but those are far from the only applications for the unmanned aerial vehicles. Case in point: the World Wildlife Fund, which has now received a $5 million grant from Google's Global Impact Awards program to fund UAVs designed to monitor endangered species. Apple posts updates for Final Cut, Motion, Compressor
Apple has posted new maintenance updates its line of professional video editing software. Above all is Final Cut Pro X 10.0.7, which among others fixes problems with creating single-layer DVDs, third-party transitions using black instead of source media, and third-party effects causing Final Cut to freeze during background rendering. It also restores the Offset slider for the Letterbox effect, and allows editing MXF files that are still ingesting.

Twitter to give users fewer characters to tweet with when URLs are involved
The shock! The horror! The genuine nightmare of losing two more valuable character spaces per tweet! Such a scenario is indeed going to play out, as Twitter has just announced a subtle change in its t.co wrapper that'll go into play this coming February. The firm will be extending the maximum length of t.co wrapped links from 20 to 22 characters for non-https URLs, and 21 to 23 characters for https URLs. Apple's ranking falls in Chinese smartphone market
Low-priced smartphones have been competing against the iPhone for at least a year in China, and the effects are showing in Apple's slipping marketshare in the country. Research firm IDC reports via Reuters that Apple has fallen to No. 6 in China's smartphone market during third quarter sales, down from fourth place in the previous quarter. Rival Samsung remains in the No. 1 spot.

T-Mobile USA confirms plans for Apple sales in 2013
T-Mobile USA will start selling Apple products in 2013, according to Rene Obermann, the CEO of T-Mobile parent company Deutsche Telekom. As was earlier speculated, Obermann revealed the plans during investors' day meetings held earlier today. Which products T-Mobile will carry hasn't been identified, but this presumably means some version of the iPhone, and likely the iPad as well.

Briefly: Vice City iOS port released, T-RackS updated to 4.0
Rockstar Games has released an iOS port of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, its 2002 open world action-adventure game. Vice City follows the story of Tommy Vercetti, a mafia hit man and ex-convict, who is trying to get revenge on a group who set him up. In celebration of the game's 10 anniversary the graphics, character models, and lighting effects have all been updated, and include support for Retina displays. As Apple ponders US move, Foxconn does same
Even as Apple promises some US-assembled Macs, Foxconn, one of Apple's largest manufacturing partners, is reportedly looking to expand its North American operations in the near future. The Taipei-based manufacturer, which already has operations in California and Texas, cites growing customer demand for American-made devices as the reason behind the shift. T-Mobile USA to get iPhone in 2013
At long last, it appears that T-Mobile USA will become the last of the "Big 4" wireless carriers in the country to carry Apple products. Deutsche Telekom, the parent company of T-Mobile USA, made an announcement today that the carrier will begin selling iPhones in 2013.
To make its network iPhone-friendly, T-Mobile is investing in making its existing 3G network compatible with iPhones and will be deploying a next-generation LTE network in 2013. The company is also actively pursuing current iPhone owners to unlock their devices and move to the magenta network.

Bloomberg: Foxconn plans US expansion to fill demand for American-made products
Apple CEO Tim Cook caused quite a stir when he announced that at least some Macs would soon be made in the US, and it looks like one of the world's biggest device manufacturers is now set to follow suit. As Bloomberg reports, Foxconn is planning to expand its operations in the US to fulfill what it sees as a growing demand for more Made in the USA products. While not providing many details beyond that, Foxconn spokesperson Louis Woo said in an interview with Bloomberg that "supply chain is one of the big challenges for US expansion," adding that "any manufacturing we take back to the US needs to leverage high-value engineering talent there in comparison to the low-cost labor of China." Dreams can come true, folks: T-Mobile and Apple have entered an agreement and will be launching products beginning next year. The announcement was posted (nearly as an afterthought, oddly enough) as part of a press release in which Deutsche Telekom spelled out its financial plans through 2015, while COO Rene Obermann also made the announcement in an investors conference. Spotify doubles user base in last year, 1 million paid subscribers in the US
At an event today, way out on Manhattan's west side, Spotify held a bit of a get together with a few of its closest business associates and members of the press. CEO Daniel Ek took the opportunity to do a quick victory lap, touting its growth as a service. FTC calls Motorola's bid for Apple product injunction 'inappropriate'
On Wednesday, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) stated in a filed brief that it felt a previous district court decision to deny Motorola's bid for an injunction of several Apple products was correct.
Motorola had claimed that Apple's iPhone and iPad allegedly infringed on wireless patents, and requested that the courts block Apple from selling iPhones and iPads in the United States. The FTC brief said that a court-ordered injunction is inappropriate when the holder of a patent has licensed it under fair, reasonable and nondiscriminatory (FRAND) terms.'

Apple is reportedly moving into a new space in The Hague (Netherlands), but its arrival may disappoint holiday shoppers next year. NASA Black Marble: Nachtbilder der Erde - so detailliert wie nie zuvor

Die NASA hat aus Satellitenbildern Collagen gebastelt, welche die Erde bei Nacht so detailliert wie nie zuvor zeigen. Das Projekt heißt "Black Marble" (schwarze Murmel) und knüpft damit an das berühmte Mondflugfoto "Blue Marble" an, das die Besatzung der Apollo 17 im Jahr 1972 aufnahm. Diese neuen Bilder entstanden dank spezieller Sensoren, die so empfindlich sind, dass sie das Licht eines einzelnen Schiffes oder sogar reflektierendes Mondlicht entdecken können. A UK-based electronics testing and recommendation magazine and website, Which, has rated the tablet battery life of various sized tablets -- and found that the iPad and iPad mini ran away with the competition, besting its rivals by very significant scores. AAPL sees worst single-day drop in years on market fears
Apple's stock took an unexpected beating in the market on Wednesday, losing 6.43 percent of its value and shedding some $35 billion in market capitalization after the worst single-day drop in price in almost four years. Apple seeds second 10.8.3 build, now using Software Update
Beginning with a new, second OS X 10.8.3 beta build, Apple is now giving developers the option of obtaining beta OS updates through the Mac App Store's Software Update mechanism. The move should make distribution of updates to registered testing devices more uniform, and expands the use of "developer channel" updates available through the store. Apple says that while email notification of new updates will continue as well, a new tool installed by registered developers will allow Software Update to notify users of new builds.

FTC: FRAND patents shouldn't induce Apple embargo
The US Federal Trade Commission filed an amicus curae (friend of the court) brief with the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Court, stating that it believes that Motorola Mobility should not be allowed to stop the sale of Apple products that are accused of infringing on its standards-essential patents related to wireless communication. FTC: Motorola bid for Apple product injunction 'inappropriate'
In an amicus curiae brief filed on Wednesday in the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission offered its take on the proper use of so-called standard-essential patents (SEPs) in litigation, saying that a previous district court decision to deny a Motorola injunction of certain Apple products was correct.

Former Apple CEO John Sculley: Apple is well-run
Although Tim Cook has been at Apple's helm for a while now, concern over his long-term guidance continues to permeate opinions of both shareholders and analysts. For his part, former Apple CEO, John Sculley, is confident in Apple's management. The Motley Fool reports that during a recent interview with CNBC, Sculley was very upbeat about the future of his former company.
"I think they're going through a very significant change now in terms of product cycles," Sculley explains. "Traditionally Apple introduces products once a year; now it's really introducing products twice a year. The complexity of that from a supply chain is immense, and Apple seems to be doing it well.
