Crowd-funded group building asteroid-mapping telescope, saving Earth (video)
Just when you're numbing to robot, zombie and nuclear apocalypse scenarios, some old-fashioned asteroid paranoia pops up to surprise you. The B612 Foundation, which gets funding from, well, anyone, has just announced plans to launch Sentinel, a space telescope which will wander the vacuum cataloging asteroids in our inner solar system. Rdio goes minimalist, tries another redesign on for size
Finally get settled into the last Rdio redesign from just a few months ago? Well, we're afraid you've got a bit more adjusting to do. The streaming music service has now rolled out another sweeping visual overhaul of its website and desktop apps -- one that ditches the former iTunes-like appearance for a far more minimalist look, although all of the key elements remain in the same places as before. Naturally, that brings with it yet another software update for the desktop apps, although there's no word on any changes for its mobile apps just yet.

OWC offers 2010/2011 MacBook Air SSD upgrades
Upgrade vendor OWC has released a combination SSD upgrade and external case for 2010 and 2011 MacBook air notebooks. The Mercury Aura bundle includes a Aura Pro Express SSD and Aura Envoy external housing. After installing the Aura Pro Express SSD, the factory SSD is converted into external storage by installing the drive into the Aura Envoy case, completing the upgrade.

Cracking the Nexus Q, Google's 25-watt amplified obsession
"We're missing a nut," says a bemused Matt Hershenson, former Danger founder and now Google's director of hardware for Android, pointing at a vacant spot on an exploded photo of the Nexus Q. Its parts are strewn out across a white background, perfectly arranged in a linear pattern that starkly contrasts with the spherical nature of the thing. Apple alters App Store algorithm yet again
Apple tinkered with its App Store algorithm last week and changed the search position of some apps by ordering results based on user ratings and an app's description. This morning a report from TechCrunch suggests the Cupertino company has tweaked the algorithm again to add some weight back to the app's name and keyword.
This change was detected by Tomasz Kolinko, developer and founder of App Store analyst company Appcod.es. Kolinko noticed the change when his own app, Love Letter Writing, appeared in searches for the terms "advice" and "writing advice." Last week's change had removed hi

Ex-OS X chief Bertrand Serlet at work on cloud tech startup
Apple's former senior VP for OS X software, Bertrand Serlet, is at work on a cloud computing startup called Upthere, BusinessInsider says it has learned. The company is based in downtown Palo Alto, where Serlet has reportedly been joined by "at least" two other former Apple workers. Job listings hint at the company's connections. "Our founders were key to building the worldís leading operating system (Mac OS X) and database (Oracle) and have a clear vision of core technology for a Cloud OS," one listing reads.

Google expands Maps API to enable deeper customization
Google has put out some enhancements to its Google Maps API. Two years ago, it launched Styled Maps, which allowed developers to change the visuals of an API-called map to match the site or app it is being used on. The new updates, according to the Google Geo Developers blog, allow for further customization of maps, and also introduces an updated Styled Maps Wizard to show off its new capabilities.

Instead Bettina Sorger, Joel Reithler, Brigitte Dahmen and Rainer Goebel at Universiteit Maastricht have figured out a way to monitor the flow of blood in the brain and associate the images captured using an MRI with the letters of the alphabet. BMW and Toyota sign deal to collaborate on sports car and EV technology
There's not a lot of specifics to be had on this one just yet, but BMW and Toyota have inked a new deal that will see them collaborate on far more than the batteries they've already agreed to work on together. According to the automakers, the new arrangement will see them focus on four key areas: a fuel cell system, powertrain electrification, lightweight technologies and, last but not least, joint development of the "architecture and components for a future sports vehicle." HP plans to hold off on building ARM-based Windows tablets, focus on x86 instead
Whether it's put off by Microsoft's own push into tablets with Surface or just taking a wait-and-see approach, HP has now confirmed that it won't be among those offering ARM-based Windows 8 (or RT) hardware when the OS makes its long-awaited debut later this year. That possibility was first reported by SemiAccurate earlier today and has now been backed up by Bloomberg, which has the official word straight from HP spokesperson Marlene Somsak. Apple pursues rights to iPad3.com domain name
Apple has filed to seize control of the iPad3.com domain name, according to Domain Name Wire. The company has submitted a complaint to the World Intellectual Property Organization, hoping to take advantage of the organization's uniform domain name dispute resolution policy, also known as the UDRP. iPad3.com was first registered in January 2010; currently it's owned by Global Access, a business based on the Isle of Man which has already lost to numerous squatting accusations filed by companies like AOL and MasterCard.

Nike+ FuelBand adds support for Path app
Nike launched its FuelBand exercise assistant earlier this year and the device took off. Nike is releasing a significant update today that'll add support for the Path social network. This new Path feature will let users tie their FuelBand earnings with their status updates on Path. Users can view their daily timeline and see what they were doing when they earned their NikeFuel. It also lets users share their NikeFuel achievements with friends who are important to them.

iPhone 5th Anniversary: A video retrospective
Talk about a trip down memory lane! After blogger Mike Grothaus mentioned the low quality of his personal photos of the 2007 launch, I dug around on my iMac and found a video I had created on June 29, 2007 for a new blog I was running at the time.
The video ends rather abruptly -- I had to set down the camera to sign for my new iPhone -- but you'll get an idea of what it was like to be in line at the Aspen Grove Apple Store on the day of the iPhone launch. I was quite amazed at how much the Apple Store has changed in five years; no more bookshelves full of boxed software and many more iPhone accessories.

iPhone 5th anniversary: I stood in line all day for an iPhone and I also got this lousy t-shirt
Five years ago today, on June 29, 2007, I spent the entire day sitting in front of the Aspen Grove Apple Store in Littleton, Colorado. My mission? To be one of the first people to own an iPhone. I got the iPhone, and also a little souvenir that fortuitously appeared in my dresser this morning.
I remember getting to the store shortly after 7 AM and being surprised by the length of the line already. About eighty people had made it into the line ahead of me, so not knowing what Apple's plans were for the new device, I was worried that I wasn't going to get one. I had my trusty Palm Treo 680 with me, and my major concern was that I was going to have to shut down my T-Mobile service.

Siri tests suggest Google text search still best option
Apple's Siri voice command system is still probably an inferior choice for searches versus Google text entries, according to a study by researchers at Piper Jaffray. Analyst Gene Munster and his team tested Siri first with 800 queries in a quiet room, without using headphones, and then with another 800 queries out on a busy Minneapolis street, but using Skull Candy mic-equipped headphones. Indoors Siri understood 89 percent of queries, accurately answering 68 percent of questions. Outdoors it faired slightly worse, with rates of 83 and 62 percent, respectively.

I had watched the iPhone announcement several months earlier, and thought it looked like an incredible phone. But I wasn't planning to get one because I was a Palm user, and had been a Palm user since my Palm IIIxe. I had a ton of software, and I was heavily into the whole Palm "experience."
At the time I was carrying a Treo 650 (which has replaced my Treo 600, which had replaced my Treo 300) and I was fairly happy with it. Sure, it locked up a couple times a day and I had to remove the battery pack to reboot it, but so what? Diablo 3: Hotfix hilft bei Dropraten und Digitalkauf

Polaroid besinnt sich als Marke mal wieder darauf eine Kamera mit Instant-Photos zu machen. Die Z2300 kommt mit eigenem Drucker und 10-Megapixel Kamera und schaft 2x3-Zoll Bilder, die gleichzeitig auch als Aufkleber funktionieren, in 30-45 Sekunden. Die Kamera soll in den USA 160 Dollar kosten und Papier (Aufkleber) dann 15 Dollar für 30 oder 25 Dollar für 50. U.S. Cellular pledges to carry Windows Phone 8 devices in the fall
U.S. Cellular has confirmed to PC Mag that it's "excited" by the prospect of carrying Windows Phone 8 handsets when they land later this year. A PR person even went as far as saying that WP8 "will be an important part of our lineup." The move leaves Sprint, Cricket and MetroPCS as the only major-league holdouts for the new platform -- or perhaps their PR departments just aren't as bubbly.

Chrome für iOS: Benchmarks sind ernüchternd

So schön es ist, endlich Chrome auf iOS als Alternative zu haben, es ist nicht der erhoffte Sprung. Allerdings ist genau das auch nicht Googles Schuld. Denn statt der eigenen Engine müssen sie aufgrund der Apple-Beschränkungen auf MobileSafari im Hintergrund zurückgreifen und dürfen nicht die JavaScript-Beschleunigung Nitro und JIT nutzen. Daily iPad App: Dynamite Jack is a welcome arrival on the iPad
Phil Hassey's great Dynamite Jack game arrived on Steam and the Mac App Store a little while ago, but Phil told us back at GDC this year that he's been planning an iOS release. This week, that finally happened, and Dynamite Jack is now available on the iPad. The game's a 2D stealth affair, where you guide Jack through a series of caverns, trying to dodge guards, cave trolls, lasers, and spiders to collect chips and make it to the exit alive.
Hassey's done an impressive job porting the game over here. The virtual controls work just fine and a new line-drawing mode lets you trace a line on the screen to guide Jack's route. A

Apple hat die Art und Weise wie Technologieprodukte präsentiert werden maßgeblich geprägt. Imagefilmchen und Werbespots aus dem Hause Apple werden von der Konkurrenz gerne als Vorlagen verwenden. New Zealand judge rules Megaupload search warrant illegal
Judge Helen Winkelmann of the New Zealand High Court ruled that police warrants used to seize property from Megaupload file-sharing site founder Kim Dotcom were illegal. The warrants used did not properly describe the offenses that they were related to, lacked details of the copyright infringement offense, and did not specify the types of items to be searched for. As a logical extension to the ruling, Judge Winkelmann said that it was unlawful for copies of Dotcom's personal data to be taken to the United States for use and analysis by the FBI.

Coca-Cola's A011 vending machine keeps drink cool without using (much) power
So maybe that self-chilling soda didn't pan out, but Coca-Cola is working on another method for keeping its beverages cool without using power. In partnership with Fuji Electric Retail Systems, the company has developed the A011 vending machine, which is capable of keeping drinks frosty for up to 16 hours a day without using energy. As previously reported, a new line of Modbooks was announced today. Re-born after a two-year absence, the ex-Axiotron Modbook line has been refreshed under new ownership with the Modbook Pro. Two highly-placed Apple employees announced their retirement dates today. Apple hardware Senior Vice President Bob Mansfield and Apple Principal Accounting Officer Betsy Rafael are both retiring later this year. Mansfield supervised the engineering of every major Apple product released in the 21st century. iPad app teaches Photoshop CS6 in an engaging manner
I've been debating jumping to Photoshop CS6 for awhile. I've had every version of PS since version 1 way back in the distant past and have really looking for someone to show me what the differences between CS5 and CS6 were in an easily understandable way.

Canon 7D 2.0.X firmware update scheduled for August, brings plenty of free fixins
It's hard to believe, but the last the last time we covered a major firmware update for Canon's 7D DLSR the iPhone 4 was still fresh in our minds. Now, nearly two years later, Canon is offering up a bevy of new features for the full-frame camera with its soon to be released -- and free -- 2.0.X update. Apple updates printer drivers, Aperture for 10.6, 10.7
Apple has pushed out a minor upgrade to it's earlier major update of Aperture, released two weeks ago. The new 3.3.1 version fixes a bug that could cause the program to hang or crash when upgrading libraries to the new iPhoto and Aperture unified format. The company also introduced or updated hundreds of printer and scanner drivers for major brands under Snow Leopard and Lion, along with more support for several smaller printer brands.

Game capture is a bigger and bigger business lately -- with YouTube views earning money for partner channels, indie devs needing to capture video footage of their games, and lots of players just wanting to record their own gameplay for various purposes, there's a big call these days for full, HD video of gameplay captured from video game consoles. Nexus Q hacked to run Android games in under 24 hours
The word "run" in the headline is chosen very carefully. Developer Christina Kelly managed to get Swords and Soldiers up and running on the Nexus Q, but the game is not actually playable. Without a touchscreen or any other way to actually control the title, there's not much to do besides look at the splash screen. Griffin's Kiosk iPad mount now available
If you've been thinking about using an iPad for a customer kiosk in your business, but haven't figured out how to secure it, Griffin's new Kiosk may be just the solution.
The Kiosk comes in two versions -- the Floor Mount (US$299), which screws into a floor and lifts the iPad to 47.5" above floor height, and the Table Mount ($199) that mounts an iPad so it's sitting about a foot above a table.
The hardware to mount the Kiosk is included, and three interchangeable faceplates provide or deny access to the camera and home button. An included power cable runs through the center of the steel mount arm, keeping it protected at all times.
