Apple: Ein treuer iOS-Nutzer ist gut 1.000 US-Dollar wert

BBC introduces Red Button to the internet, thinks they'll be great pals
Since 1999, the BBC's Red Button feature has delivered alternative camera angles, sports scores and the like over broadcast spectrum, but it's now set to become internet enabled. Channel surfers shouldn't expect a full-blown web experience, however, as the Beebs stresses it's not about to include everything and the kitchen sink in terms of functionality. AMD Catalyst 12.6 Grafikkartentreiber veröffentlicht
Der Chiphersteller AMD hat den Catalyst Treiber Version 12.6 für seine Grafikkarten veröffentlicht. Apple kann einstweiliges Verkaufsverbot gegen Samsung Galaxy Nexus durchsetzen
Laut einem Bericht von FOSS Patents konnte Apple in Kalifornien eine weitere einstweilige Verfügung gegen Samsung vor Gericht durchsetzen. Dieses Mal wurde von Richterin Lucy Koh ein Verkaufsverbot gegen das Android-Smartphone Galaxy Nexus ausgesprochen, welches von Samsung gemeinsam mit Google entwickelt wurde. Apple arbeitet an Verbesserung der iPhone-Autokorrektur
Apples Autokorrektur im iOS-Betriebssystem brachte mich persönlich zeitweise zum Deaktivieren dieser Funktion, da sie besonders in der deutschen Ausgabe den ein oder anderen schwerwiegenden Fehler bei bestimmten Wörtern erstellt. Apple soll nun aber weiter an Technologien forschen, die die Genauigkeit der Autokorrektur-Funktion weiter verbessern. Möglicherweise kann ich dieses Features dann wieder aktivieren. Die Firma Recon Instruments führte auf der Google I/O unseren US-Kollegen die neuesten Errungenschaften ihrer Terminator-Skibrillen vor. In einem ersten Clip seht ihr, wie sich die HighTech-Gläser via Bluetooth mit einer Android-App verbinden. Hebt man während des Snowboardens oder Skifahrens ab, werden die Daten zum Sprung (Distanz, Höhe, Dauer) an Facebook geschickt. Und damit nicht genug, Kommentare dazu erscheinen wiederum prompt auf dem Head-up-Display des Fahrers. NASA's NuSTAR probe snaps first X-ray image of feeding black hole
It was Bret Easton Ellis who coined the phrase, "The better you look, the more you see," and it appears the folks down at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab agree. In what's considered a "first," the agency's latest space-scouring probe, the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, has turned on its X-ray vision to capture focused images of a black hole, dubbed Cygnus X-1, feeding on a nearby giant star.

iPhone 5: ein weiblicher Wunschzettel
Nun wird es endlich fünf Jahre alt, das iPhone. Bekanntlich können manche Kinder schon in diesem Alter lesen und schreiben und das iPhone ist ja in der Tat ein intelligentes Gerät. Man kann ihm also durchaus etwas zutrauen, in seiner weiteren Entwicklung. Man(n)? Frau traut ihm etwas zu: ein weiblicher Wunschzettel an das kommende iPhone.

Apple vs. Samsung: Richterin stoppt das Galaxy Nexus in den USA
Es war keine gute Woche für Samsung. Nachdem Bundesrichterin Lucy Koh am Dienstag bereits den iPad-Konkurrenten Galaxy Tab 10.1 vom US-Markt verbannte, hat sie Samsung gestern untersagt, das Smartphone Galaxy Nexus zu verkaufen. Das Urteil stützt sich in erster Linie auf ein Apple-Patent, welches Teile des Sprachsteuerungssystems Siri schützt. Nach Ansicht der Richterin verletzt Samsung darüberhinaus drei weitere Patente. Damit die einstweilige Verfügung in Kraft tritt, muss Apple mehr als 95 Millionen Dollar hinterlegen. Apple erringt Einstweilige Verfügung gegen Samsungs Galaxy Nexus in den USA
Apple scheint zur Zeit auch im Hinblick auf die Rechtsstreitigkeiten einen Lauf zu haben. Nachdem sich die Aufregung um Windows Phone 8 gelegt hat, informiert Microsoft in einem Blogeintrag über weitere Details zur neuen mobilen Betriebssystem-Version: 180 Länder werden Zugang zum WP Marketplace und zum Developer App Hub erhalten. Das sind wesentlich mehr als die heutigen 63 Märkte und 38 App Hubs. Apple cleared of infringing charges on Samsung patent
Hot on the heels of a preliminary injunction barring US sales of Samsung's and Google's flagship phone the Galaxy Nexus and an earlier injunction against Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 Android tablet, US District Court Judge Lucy Koh also cleared Apple of a Samsung charge of infringement of a UTMS patent. The ruling was a victory for Apple, as well as for its position that FRAND-eligible patents shouldn't be used as legal weapons.

Study: 21 percent of iOS owners won't switch at any price
The loyalty of Mac users to the Apple brand is legend throughout both the industry and computer users generally, but only a handful of studies have ever really tested user loyalty to Apple on its iOS devices -- though every study done indicates that buyers are "very satisfied" with them. A survey done by Goldman Sachs suggests that around 21 percent of iOS owners would not switch to another platform "at any price."

FEMA and National Weather Service launch Wireless Emergency Alert System
While it's a little later than expected, the free SMS emergency notification system has now gone live. Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) messages will be delivered to cell towers in affected areas, which will then broadcast them to all compatible devices in their range. Bloomberg: FTC investigating FRAND abuse at Google, Motorola
The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is investigating if Google and Motorola Mobility are honoring fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) commitments made to license standards-essential patents. A civil investigative demand, similar to a subpoena, has been issued to Google as it looks at overall practices in litigation and licensing. The US investigation follows the opening of European Commission investigations into Motorola Mobility and Samsung Electronics for FRAND violations as well.

TUAW Origin Stories: Elphi
Sadly this origin story ended before it began. While at WWDC we spoke to the creators of Elphi, a smart, remote-controllable AC outlet. Last night their Kickstarter project ended almost $30,000 shy of their goal. It's a shame, since this looked like a really promising product that would have been quite useful to a great number of people. We wrote it up almost immediately, to no avail.

Scientists develop flush-efficient toilet system that can turn waste into energy, sort before it recycles
Scientists from Singapore's Nanyang Technological University aren't keen on being wasteful -- that's why they've developed a toilet that uses 90% less water than other commodes and is capable of generating energy. Aptly named the No-Mix Vacuum Toilet, the porcelain pedestal's pot divides waste between two partitions -- one side for liquids, the other for solids -- and uses vacuum tech reminiscent of airline lavatories. Logoist for Mac: A simple way to create logos and other useful graphics
There are many apps that can be used to create backgrounds, logos, and other graphics. Usually, the better the output, the more expensive the program. Photoshop comes to mind as the perfect example of one of these apps -- it's pricey, but it can do just about anything in terms of creating graphics.

University of Tokyo builds a soap bubble 3D screen, guarantees your display stays squeaky clean (video)

Morgen startet das iPhone in sein sechstes Lebensjahr. App Store search algorithm altered three times in a week
Apple appears to have made three changes in a week to its App Store search algorithms which are used to fine-tune search results. A change made earlier this week scores apps higher by user ratings and app descriptions, rather than by application name (as was the case before the changes). A change made today places a larger emphasis on developer-inserted keywords with names than before, with other changes lowering the position of "junk" applications relying on in-app purchase names for higher placement.

HTC teases something 'Incredible' for the US in July, we think a 4G LTE Droid might fit the bill
HTC has been leaving Verizon subscribers hanging on just when they would get the Droid Incredible 4G LTE ever since we saw it in New Orleans last month. Lantronix announces XPrintServer Home Edition for iOS wireless printing
Back in January I had the pleasure of reviewing the Lantronix XPrintServer. It's a handy little US$149.95 box that businesses can use to easily make networked printers visible to iOS devices. At the time, I remember thinking that a home version of the XPrintServer would be really popular. Well, Lantronix announced a home version about a week ago at a lower price point -- $99.95 -- and it will be shipping in July.

USA: Apple erreicht Einstweilige Verfügung gegen Samsung Galaxy Nexus

iBook Lessons: Adding ASL support to iBooks
iBook Lessons is a continuing series about ebook writing and publishing.
Bilingual books have existed for a long time. Bilingual ebooks have also shown a presence in online stores. Adding American Sign Language (ASL) editions to ebooks? That's a proposition that has been hard to accomplish although possible under current EPUB standards.
The reason is that video and text must coexist on the virtual page. That's hard to do with ebooks, and impossible in conventional books. With the iPad and iBooks Author, that challenge has now become possible.

Breaking: Apple granted injunction against Galaxy Nexus
Northern District of California Judge Lucy Koh has awarded Apple a preliminary injunction against Samsung's Galaxy Nexus in court today. The injunction will take effect once Apple posts a $96 million bond in case the injunction is overturned on appeal. The Galaxy Nexus was to be Samsung's and Google's flagship smartphone, and developers were given initial versions of the phone just a few days ago. An appeal is expected, and MacNN will provide additional details as they become available.
