RIM: QWERTY BlackBerry 10 phone launches in 'close proximity' to its all-touch cousin
RIM hasn't had much good news to offer along with its glum fiscal first quarter, but it has given a reason to mark early 2013 on the calendar if you're a BlackBerry fan. Three new Apple Stores to open this weekend
Apple is opening three new retail stores this Saturday, June 30th. The first is the Ridge Hill location in Yonkers, New York. The outlet is just outside of New York City, and will be Apple's 17th in the state; a disproportionate number of those are clustered in and around the New York City area.

Daily iPhone App: Squids Wild West brings back the Squids for tactical battle
Squids was an excellent little strategy title that arrived last year on iOS, and since then, devs The Game Bakers have been working hard to update it, both with better-looking graphics and lots of different gameplay upgrades. Squids: Wild West arrived on the App Store just today, and it's a standalone expansion to the first game of sorts, with lots of new content, new mechanics, and new features to play with.

Google Drive for iOS hands-on

Virgin Mobile to open Chicago stores in support of iPhone
Virgin Mobile US is opening its first-ever retail stores in Chicago tomorrow in support of its iPhone launch, Bloomberg reports. The carrier is starting with just 10 locations, but says it plans to open more around the country should the initial venture prove successful. Typically Virgin has relied on third-party vendors like Best Buy to sell phones and service to people not ordering through its website.

Recon Instruments defrosts its Android SDK at Google I/O (video)

RIM announces Q1 2013 earnings: 5,000 job cuts, BB10 not due until Q1 2013
The last quarter has been about as rough as they come for RIM, and it's now detailed just how things stacked up in terms of hard numbers. For the first quarter of its 2013 fiscal year, the company brought in $2.8 billion in revenue, down a full 33 percent from the prior quarter, and reported a net loss of $518 million. What's more, it's also announced that it's cutting an additional 5,000 jobs as part of its ongoing restructuring efforts, and that BlackBerry 10 now won't be out until the first quarter of 2013. Microsoft reportedly plans Windows 8 upgrades all the way from XP, wants us to just let go of the past
Microsoft has been promising a cheap-and-cheerful upgrade path to Windows 8 for those who buy new PCs. But what about that five-year-old PC in the basement? Virgin Mobile to sell prepaid iPhone in retail stores
Virgin Mobile began selling the iPhone on Thursday and became the second prepaid carrier in the US to offer Apple's popular smartphone. The Sprint-owned carrier is selling the iPhone 4 and 4S online and, starting tomorrow, will sell the two handsets in it's new stores, according to Business Week. These new stores are the first of the their kind for Virgin Mobile and they will open in the Chicago area. Wireless Emergency Alerts system to warn of storms, floods
The US National Weather Servicewill soon start sending severe weather warnings to smartphone owners in potentially dangerous situations. The Wireless Emergency Alerts system will send warning messages to those at risk of flooding, hurricanes, dust storms and blizzards via compatible smartphones, complete with a special warning tone and vibration reserved for the message.

Google TV will get subscription billing, support for movie and TV purchases in Google Play
While it didn't merit a spot in either keynote, the Google TV platform is also getting an updated version of the Google Play store. Along with a new UI that looks a lot like the one on other Android devices it will have support for purchasing movies, music and TV shows as mentioned yesterday, and also subscription billing. Neben Chrome für iOS wurde auf der Google I/O heute auch Google Drive mit Offline-Funktionen für iOS und Chrome OS angekündigt. Damit können Texte Tabellen werden noch nicht unterstützt nun auch unterwegs auf den mobilen Geräten bearbeitet werden.

Reno city council approves Apple tax break for data center
No big surprise here -- the Reno, NV city council has approved tax breaks for Apple's proposed data center and business / purchasing center in the city. The tax breaks are expected to produce a 79 percent reduction in Apple tax burden, but building the facilities should provide the northern Nevada city with a significant economic boost.
Washoe County commissioners approved their part of the deal on Tuesday, giving Apple an 85 percent break on personal property taxes. The 350-acre data center still has a few hurdles to overcome, as the project must go through about a month-long approval process with the Nevada governor's economic development office.

Google Drive comes to iOS, Chrome OS
(Update: iOS app now available) Google's Drive file storage service is officially coming to iOS and Chrome OS, the company announced today at its second Google I/O keynote. Little has been announced about plans for the former, except that an app should launch for all iOS devices sometime today. One feature will be the ability to search through scanned documents, thanks to OCR technology; searching for "pyramid," for instance, should bring up images with the word in them even if the filename is completely unrelated.

Q: I found your article last week on Refreshing Photo Albums on the Apple TV and I’m in a similar situation. I’m a Mac user, but I prefer to use folders for my Apple TV as I want to be able to quickly add new pictures without having to go through iPhoto. Sergey Brin: Google Glass für alle kommt Anfang 2014

Google hat soeben auf der Entwicklerkonferenz Google I/O in San Francisco Chrome für iOS, sprich iPhone und iPad, angekündigt. Der Browser soll noch heute erscheinen.

Sergey Brin hopes to bring Google Glass to market in 2014

Bloomberg: Overhauled iTunes to improve sharing
According to a Bloomberg article posted today, Apple is planning to overhaul iTunes by the end of 2012, adding iCloud integration and new features for sharing music.
Unnamed sources told Bloomberg staffers that the iCloud integration is targeted at alleviating issues that users currently have with organizing all of their music, videos, photos and apps. Part of the changes were revealed a few days ago when the Podcast app became available to iOS 6 testers. It's expected that individual apps to handle a specific type of content will become the norm.
Apple is also allegedly asking music labels for additional photos and videos that can be included in a future iteration of iTunes

Google Compute Engine brings Linux virtual machines 'at Google scale'
As anticipated, Google has just launched its cloud service for businesses at Google I/O 2012, called Google Compute Engine. Starting today Urs Holzle announced "anyone with large-scale computing needs" can access the infrastructure and efficiency of Google's datacenters. Google sends Chromebooks to some Best Buy and Dixons stores, starting today
Google is getting serious about spreading the reach of Chromebooks. Chrome, Google Drive coming to iPhone and iPad today
During today's keynote, Google announced that Chrome for iPhone and iPad. Like the Android version of mobile Chrome, users will gain incognito browsing, syncing information (such as passwords and other credentials) and tabs, which Engadget noted is similar to how they are in the newly announced Nexus 7.
Also, Google Drive will be coming to iOS as well. Google says both apps will be available later today.

Google Drive client comes to Chrome OS and iOS, available today
Windows, Mac and Android users are no longer alone in their access to Google Drive's online repository. Now iOS and Chrome OS users can install a client and pull down their data and docs (though, the promised Linux client was nowhere to be seen at IO). The iOS app has all the features that make Drive drive great on Android, including OCR and picture recognition. Google announces offline editing for Docs, available later today
We're live at day two of I/O and the theme of this keynote is all about "Going Google." With this focus on Mountain View's various cloud-based apps, Clay Bavar, Director of Product Management for Google Apps, announced that Docs will now work offline for editing. Chrome tops 310 million users, almost 100% growth over last year
Last year at Google IO, the company was bragging that it had racked up 160 million Chrome users. Since then, that number has nearly doubled, with the company claiming 310 million active users. Those consumers download roughly 1TB of data per day and type about 60 billion words according to Mountain View's crack team of analysts. The company even claims that 13 years of time have been saved thanks to the magic of Chrome's speedy rendering engine.

Google kicked off its I/O developers conference by unveiling its latest Nexus hardware and new software, including a Google + app designed for tablets. The tablet app has a user interface that The Next Web describes as being part Flipboard, part Apple Coverflow.

Sony Sound Forge audio editing suite headed to Macs?
Sony's Sound Forge audio production software could becoming to the Mac in the near future, notes MacRumors. The basis for the claim is an anonymous website, finallyonthemac.com, hosting a YouTube video which promises a "Countdown to a revolution." Scenes in the video depict various music-related images, as well as waveform graphics, and even iron forging. The fonts and general style of the website are also similar to standard Sony marketing.

Map Share ist ab Juli auf allen TomTom-Navis gratis verfügbar (Video)
In Zukunft erhalten alle 60 Millionen Navigationsgeräte von TomTom täglich Kartenaktualisierungen des Community-Dienstes Map Share. Modbook introduces the Modbook Pro
How remembers the Modbook? We looked at an early iteration back in 2008, and today the company has introduced the Modbook Pro.
It is a tablet, but the Modbook Pro does not run iOS. It's essentially the hardware of a 13" MacBook Pro inside a tablet case with a touch screen, running OS X. The company notes that the screen uses a Wacom digitizer for "512 levels of pen pressure sensitivity," which it claims is more than any other tablet. As for the screen itself (1280 x 800 pixel resolution), the Modbook says it's "etched" for a paper-like feel.

Rumor claims battery production problems with next iPhone
One Apple supplier is having serious problems providing batteries for the next iPhone, according to a Sina.com report quoted by Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White. The site is claiming that only 30 percent of the batteries produced by the supplier are meeting Apple standards. While the unnamed firm is said to be trying to fix the problem, only a few months are left before Apple is expected to debut the new iPhone.

A new Wireless Emergency Alerts system from the National Weather Service is on the way for American smartphone owners, but don't expect to get alerts about impending tornadoes or blizzards on your iPhone immediately.

T-Mobile: iPhone users can keep legacy data on new network
T-Mobile USA has confirmed, via a Twitter post, that people currently using the iPhone on its network will be able to retain any legacy data plans when it upgrades its cellular network. While T-Mobile isn't an official iPhone carrier in the US, and its 3G/4G network isn't (yet) compatible with the device, people with unlocked iPhones have sometimes chosen to cope with using 2G data to take advantage of other advantages the carrier might have. In some cases, this may included unlimited data as cheap as $5 per month.

Apple posts $2.6M bond for Galaxy Tab 10.1 injunction
Apple posted a needed $2.6 million bond almost immediately after a preliminary injunction was granted against US Galaxy Tab 10.1 sales, according to FOSS Patents. The money ensures that Samsung can be compensated financially to a degree if the injunction is successfully appealed. Samsung has in fact already filed a motion to stay the injunction, pending an upcoming appeal; alternately, it may accept a stay pending the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit's decision on the motion to stay.

LG VS950 hits the FCC with Verizon LTE, looks suspiciously like the Optimus Vu

BlueStacks lets Android apps run on OS X
In a matrimonial launch event outside Google I/O, BlueStacks announced the release of its Android app player for the Mac. The virtualization technology lets Mac users install Android apps directly on their machine. It will debut with select titles from HandyGames, Creative Mobile and Pulse.
Besides being able to tap into a new distribution channel, at least one developer is motivated by the lucrative Mac market. "We love any new distribution channels that open up to us and this is a big one," said Andrew Zhang, CEO of popular app developer Droidhen, maker of the "Defender" series. "Mac users also spend more money - we're excited to have our apps involved."

We've just had word from ASUS that the 16GB variant of the Nexus 7 will arrive on UK shelves on July 27th -- slightly later than the 8GB model, which will be sold exclusively through Google Play from mid-July. Android 4.1 mit überarbeiteter Benutzerführung und Google Now
Auch wenn die Highlight der gestrigen Google-I/O-Keynote sicherlich die Präsentation des Nexus 7 und Nexus Q waren, wurde natürlich auch die erwartete neue Version des Betriebssystems Android vorgestellt. BlueStacks marries Macintosh and Android applications
Cross-platform developer BlueStacks staged a mock "wedding" between Android and OS X at the Google IO conference, announcing the launch of a pre-alpha version of it's Android emulator for Intel Macs. The partnership is intended to bring Android-developed software to OS X, hopefully expanding the audience for Android apps. The "hoodie-casual" ceremony was held at 5:30 PM outside of the Google IO venue, the Moscone Center West and featured printed invitations, a "wedding" cake and chairs marked for either the "groom's" (Android) side or the "bride's" (OS X) side.

Update: Reno approves tax breaks for Apple data center
Updating our earlier story, the Reno City Council voted unanimously earlier today to award Apple a significant tax break (PDF file) over the course of 10 years if the company goes through with building two large facilities near the city. The first will house additional servers for iCloud, while the second will be a smaller administrative center in the downtown area. The city's approval was one of the lasts step, following state and county sign-offs on the incentives.

Google has opted to deliver Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as an OTA update to the ICS already on the Nexus phones and tablets it just handed everyone at I/O 2012, and there's a manual download link available too. The Modbook was originally a plastic-cased MacBook converted by engineers at Axiotron into a 13-inch pen-controlled tablet. BlueStacks brings Android apps to OS X, wolves planning a rest with some lambs
BlueStacks is releasing the first public alpha of its Android App Player capable of running on OS X. The virtualization company's software is powered by its Layercake technology and includes a bundle of apps from its various partners. Daily iPhone App: Strikefleet Omega features drag-and-drop space strategy
Strikefleet Omega is a brand new title from the creators of Crimson: Steam Pirates that I'd describe as a sort of a Flight Control in reverse. Instead of guiding ships to a base by drawing a line, you're instead dispatching them from a series of huge spaceships, sending out smaller drones to tackle and take down incoming invaders. Just like Flight Control, the gameplay can get increasingly crazy, but since everything is wave-based (kind of like a tower defense title), there's a good amount of strategy to it as well, rather than just line-drawing around. Later in the game, you can get extra abilities and ship types that need to be managed as well, so the game ends up being a sort of real-time strategy lite, where you control groups

Dark Meadow devs' next title is Horn
Phosphor Games' Dark Meadow made a big splash when it arrived on iOS last year, offering up a unique (and somewhat scary) experience on Apple's platform, with some excellent graphics and storytelling for a mobile title. Now that studio is following up with a second game, called Horn, as profiled recently by IGN. The game looks intriguing -- it's a third-person fantasy action game, and while it looks a little bit like Infinity Blade (not a bad thing), the world is supposed to be a little more open, with lots of area to explore, and even some puzzles to solve as you move along. Google teases Web Lab beta, an intersection of art, technology and the internet?
In case you didn't get enough Google I/O news today, the Chrome team has just let loose a video teasing the launch of Web Lab beta. We aren't exactly sure what the Mountain View crew is up to, but apparently, the Web Lab will be revealed through a series of experiments set to be launched later this summer. Apparently, the installations will make their debut at the London Science Museum, and from the video snippets we've seen, they'll leverage the web and some custom machinery to create works of art. Facebook to launch "faster" iPhone app in July
Let's face facts here: Facebook's iOS app is terrible. Seriously -- it's slow, the navigation is practically nonsensical, and I've even left messages and "likes" on the app that have never showed up on the big blue social network itself. It's probably the worst app I regularly use on my iPhone.
The New York Times agrees, and they've gotten a few Facebook engineers to promise, off the record, that the next version of the app will be better. It's being rebuilt in native Objective-C (the current app mostly uses HTML5), it'll be faster, and it'll actually work the way it's supposed to work, letting you use Facebook as normal from your iPhone.

Cisco announces next-gen Wi-Fi router, media connector
In a trio of related announcements today, Cisco unveiled a new next-generation Wi-Fi router, a media sharing hub, and an ecosystem meant to support both devices. The new Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router and Universal Media Connector will work in conjunction to allow users greater device interoperability, at speeds up to three times faster than current Wi-Fi routers. Cisco hopes that the two new devices will find support from developers, and the company has also rolled out a new community aimed at nurturing an app ecosystem to take advantage of the two new devices' capabilities.

Epic's most profitable game is Infinity Blade for iOS
And here's why we're going to continue seeing AAA games makers getting involved in Apple's iOS platform: Epic Games reports that Infinity Blade, which has earned over $30 million in the past 18 months, is by far the company's most profitable title, "in terms of man-years invested versus revenue." Epic has some much bigger titles than the iOS (and Android) hack-and-slash game, including the uber popular console hit series Gears of War. Externe iPad-Tastaturen - Ein Desaster
Mir ist klar, dass das iPad ein Touch-Gerät ist, aber muss die Unterstützung für externe Tastaturen ernsthaft so miserabel sein? Kein CMD-Tab zum Wechsel zwischen Programmen, kein CMD-L im Safari zum Aufrufen der URL-Leiste, keine Pfeiltasten zum Auswählen von Autocompletern z.B. der URL in Safari oder zum Scrollen in jeder App? Kein CMD-B um Text fett zu machen? Kein CMD-W zum Schließen von Fenstern in Multi-Document-Oberflächen wie dem Safari?! Keine Pfeiltasten zum Auswählen von Apps auf dem Homescreen? Überhaupt keine Blätter-Möglichkeit in Tweetbot oder die Möglichkeit, Tweets zu selektieren und dann per CMD-R zu Antworten oder ähnliches zu machen? Weshalb geben sich Apps wie Blogsy oder Pages, die explizit zum Verfassen von Texten gedacht sind, nicht wenigstens ein bisschen Mühe, irgendetwas mit der Tastatur anzustellen? In jeder App wird einem stattdessen großflächig ins Gesicht gekotzt und wenn alles abgeflossen ist bleiben miefige Buchstaben übrig: “Kauf dir ein MacBook Air

Facebook: Beschleunigung der iPhone-App
Die offizielle Facebook-App fürs iPhone wird von vielen Nutzern des Sozialen Netzwerks häufig mit dem Wort “langsam” beschrieben. Dies soll sich nach Angaben der New York Times noch in diesem Sommer endlich ändern.
