Nexus 7 tablet to rival Kindle Fire with $199 price, Tegra 3

Microsoft loses EC antitrust appeal, fine reduced to $1.07B

Microsoft has lost an appeal against a European Commission decision over its business practices. The General Court, Europe's second-highest, denied the appeal of the 2008 fine, which saw Microsoft faced a fine of 899 million Euros ($1.35 billion at the time, $1.12 billion now) for violating existing antitrust sanctions. This has been cut to 860 million Euros ($1.07 billion) due to Microsoft being permitted by the Commission to apply "restrictions concerning the distribution of 'open source' products" up to September 17, 2007, according to Reuters.

T-Mobile USA CEO Humm steps down, moving to Europe

Chief Executive of T-Mobile USA Philipp Humm has resigned from the company, leaving COO Jim Alling in charge while a replacement is searched for. A spokesman said that Humm is leaving his position to join an unnamed competitor in Europe, and would be rejoining his family there. Originally, Humm had advised T-Mobile of his intention to leave by September, however his departure was moved forward once he informed Deutsche Telekom Chief Executive Rene Obermann of his new employer's identity, which remains unknown.

Facebook to overhaul iOS app for better speed, sources say

Facebook is overhauling its iOS app to concentrate on speed, according to two anonymous engineers from the company contacted by the New York Times. Many users have complained that the current app is slow and crash-prone. The new version will reportedly launch as soon as next month, or at least this summer, and fix underlying speed issues by switching almost entirely to Objective-C code.

Tennessee drivers can use iPads to quickly renew drivers licenses

If you're a licensed driver in the state of Tennessee, don't be surprised if you see an iPad on your next visit to the local driver service center. Tennessee's Department of Safety and Homeland Security recently spent US$79,200 to install 72 iPad kiosks inside 26 of those service centers for the purpose of speeding up driver's license renewals. The kiosks are called ASSETS (Automatic Self-Service Electronic Terminals) and are targeted for the service centers in high-population areas where waiting in line for a driver's license renewal has become an annoying issue. Google Maps offline for Android is available today in version 6.9

Google showed off offline Google Maps at its event earlier this month, and now during I/O it's ready to turn the feature on. Google's Project Glass gets some more details

Google Glass has been one of the most anticipated and hyped projects to come out of Google in quite some time. After a rather epic demo the company finally gave us a slightly deeper look at the wearable computer of our (supposed) future. Inside is the usual set of components you'd expect inside any mobile phone. There's a "powerful" CPU and "lots" of RAM (though, there was no mention of specifics) alongside an accelerometer, gyroscope and wireless radios for pulling in data. Google didn't touch on it during its keynote, but The New York Times' John Markoff has the story on one fairly unique feature of the Nexus Q home media device: the base of the device proudly boasts that it's "Designed and Manufactured in the U.S.A." Google+ has 250 million users, more mobile than desktop

Google wasn't going to leave its budding social layer (don't call it a network) out of today's IO fun. It gave itself a bit of a pat on the back for (probably) exceeding people's expectations. For all the jokes that have been made (some of them on this very site) at Google+'s expense, it's racked up more than 250 million users. Sure, only 150 milllion actually active, but simply getting people signed up is a victory in itself. And, hey, about 50 percent of them sign on every day. More interestingly, Vic Gundotra says that more users are signing in with the mobile app than visiting the desktop site. That's great news to go along with the dedicated tablet version that was also announced.

The latest beta of the Apple TV firmware -- based on iOS 6 -- allows people to rearrange onscreen app icons, testers note. The feature is triggered by moving the cursor to the icon a person wants to move, holding down the Select button, and then using arrow buttons to shuffle the app around. Apple TV reaches Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam

In tandem with an expansion of the iTunes Store, Apple is now selling the Apple TV in at least four more regions, checks show. These include Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam. Three of the new iTunes regions -- Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines -- don't have the set-top listed on their local Apple online stores.

Philipp Humm, the CEO of T-Mobile US, has resigned, according to a report from All Things D. Nexus Q images leak ahead of I/O keynote (update: video!)

Speaking of Google-related leaks, we've got another one for you. After a bit of digging, we were able to hunt down some images of the rumored Nexus Q, and it now seems inevitable that we'll be getting some up close and personal time with this particular device after today's keynote session. Apple wins patent on inductive charging dock tech

Apple has won a patent on technology needed for an inductive charging dock, notes CNET. The patent is simply titled Antenna insert, but would equip a dock with inductive charging circuits, and a reradiating antenna. Wie schon erwartet wurde hat Apple eine eigene App für Podcasts rausgetan, und zwar noch vor iOS 6, nämlich bereits gestern. Fairfax, Va. contractor Invincea, known for malware detection and network security, has been awarded a $21.4 million contract to find a way to secure Android. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and the US Army Research Laboratory (ARL) sought development teams to secure the smartphone and tablet OS for military use in an initiative called "Mobile Armor." Brightcove offers SDK for dual-screen iOS-HDTV apps

Cloud content provider Brightcove has launched a new open-source SDK and platform to help make "dual-screen" apps that can leverage Apple's AirPlay technology to offer games, video and other sorts of applications which offer content on both the iPad's own screen as well as a network-connected HDTV. Sprint's share of iPhone sales at big box stores double that at Apple retailers

A new study by CIRP shows that even though Sprint is finally carrying the iPhone in the U.S., it might have come a little too late to the party. According to the study, Sprint is selling twice as many iPhones at big box retail stores like Best Buy than it's selling at Apple Stores. That's interesting, mostly because AT&T and Verizon's sales are about the same share in both places. So why is Sprint at such a disadvantage in Apple Stores as compared to more traditional places like Best Buy? Sony teases ruggedly handsome 'action camera,' has GoPro in its sights

It's lights, camera, action cam over at Sony's blog. The company is giving the world a teaser of a new "hi-def wearable video camera" that looks to be an answer to the GoPros and Contours of the world. Sony offered up a handful of shots, including one of the camcorder encased in rugged plastic, mounted atop a helmet. According to the blog, the lightweight camera features SteadyShot image stabilization and an ultra-wide angle lens from Carl Zeiss.
