iTunes music, video expected to hit 7 more Asian countries
Apple is on the verge of announcing iTunes music, movies, and TV shows for several important Asian regions, sources say. An event is allegedly planned for tomorrow in Hong Kong; it may play host to musician Jason Mraz, as well as representatives from a number of Asian music labels. The labels are said to have been in talks with Apple as of last week, ones which may still be ongoing. New launch regions are believed to include Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.

Apple pitches data center near Reno, gambles iCloud will pay off among other puns
Apple data centers are popping up like spring flowers: following its North Carolina, Oregon and California plans, it's now pitching a fourth data center in Sparks, Nevada, just outside of Reno. The enigmatically named Project Jonathan hub is expected to light up before the end of the year if it's given the green light. Not surprisingly, Apple is promising jobs for the area, although the company is choosing the location for a reason: it's hoping for tax breaks on top of the advantages that previously led it to funnel some of its money through Nevada. Apple lays plans to build datacenter in Reno, Nevada
Apple is looking to build a new datacenter in Reno, Nevada, according to local reports. Officials from the company are said to have spoken at a meeting of the Washoe County Commission, with the aim of building the facility at the Reno Technology Park. The company is hoping to start construction in August, and have the center finished by the end of 2012. Apple has in fact confirmed its intentions through an official statement.

Apple posts Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.14
Apple has released a minor Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update for OS X, v3.14. The patch is smaller than most in fact, adding support for just two more cameras: the Canon Rebel T4i -- also known as the EOS 650D or the Kiss X6i -- and the Sony Alpha SLT-A37. Installing the software allows the cameras' RAW formats to be read in Aperture 3 and iPhoto '11.

Zynga has 22 million daily active mobile users, announces partner program
Social gaming giant Zynga is holding a press conference called Zynga Unleashed in San Francisco today, and while much of the news out of that conference is about the company's successful Facebook and social game business, Zynga has a huge interest and following in mobile games as well. The company announced that it's hit 22 million daily active users on mobile (that's users logging in daily, across iOS and Android, to Zynga mobile games), and that it has a number of new titles coming out soon. YouTube for PS Vita now ready, will help you watch more kitties than Killzone
Sony promised us a YouTube app for the PlayStation Vita this month, and although it's just sliding under the wire, that app is here. The viewer as it hits the console will play videos over 3G and WiFi as well as in HD quality, if you've got the bandwidth to burn. Most of the basics for favorites and searches are covered, including a small player that will let you hop between clips. There's no mention of subscriptions for those perpetually addicted to Maru or Ray William Johnson, however. That quirk aside, the free app is due

Facebook's Find Friends Nearby feature falls off the map, leaves buddy locating to other social apps
We're happy to chat up our Facebook friends on the web, but empowering them to track us down in person makes that virtual social experience feel a bit too real. Perhaps that was the reasoning behind the mysterious disappearance of the company's new Find Friends Nearby feature, which bit the dust yesterday just as quickly as it first appeared. Daily iPhone App: The Act combines great cartoon art with iOS gameplay
The Act is, I will say, probably one of the most interesting experiments I've ever seen show up on the App Store. I don't know if it's entirely successful, but even at the current price of $2.99, I can wholeheartedly recommend it. It does some very interesting things with interactive storytelling and animation that have to be seen to be believed.
The Act is a game by React Entertainment, a company that has at least one famous 2D animation vet in its background. As you can probably tell by the screenshot above, it's a game that's been entirely hand animated, and the art is just plain beautiful -- the characters pop off of the screen like a Disney movie. There's no dialogue at all, so the story is told strictly through animation and music, and

Atari Dev Challenge finalists announced, voting now open
Atari has announced the finalists in its ongoing dev challenge contest, in which developers from around the Internet have pitched updates to the classic Pong game for the iOS and Android App Stores, with the winners to be published and rev-shared by Atari itself. All of those finalists look pretty interesting -- they almost all have gone with a relatively classic take on the game (which is what Atari told us they were looking for), although all of them have updated the old ball-and-paddle gameplay to be a little more complicated.

Novell/Apple patent covers digital profile 'clones' to spoof profiling
If you don't want your true identity to be discovered online, one way to stay hidden is to muddle your online profile with tweaked names, different birth dates, made-up preferences and other false information. Some professionals who can't present as themselves in social media contexts (teachers, therapists & the like) use this strategy to hide from inquiring administrators and searching students/patients.
This approach isn't unique to individuals, however -- a similar type of profile polluting is detailed in a patent that Apple recently obtained from Novell, says an Information Week report.

Apple launches dedicated Podcasts app for iPhone, iPad
Apple has released Podcasts, a new universal app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The title expands on the Podcasts section of the iTunes Store, letting people not only browse through podcasts and listen to episodes, but subscribe to them directly. Audio and video podcasts are included; episodes can be streamed or downloaded, and in the latter case, synced back to a computer. Regardless, a person's position in a podcast is kept consistent between all devices they sign in with.

San Diego school district purchases 26,000 iPads
San Diego Unified School District is improving its classroom technology by purchasing 26,000 iPads for use in its schools, according to San Diego's 10News. The iPads will cost the district US$15 million and is funded through Proposition S, a money reserve available to help schools purchase up-to-date technology. The iPads will be used by 5th grade, 8th-grade and high school students in 340 classrooms. This program is thought to be one of the largest deployments of iPads within a K-12 school district.

iPhone drops from top spot among Verizon smartphone sales
The iPhone is no longer Verizon's bestselling smartphone, according to a note from William Blair analyst Anil Doradla. The claim is based on channel checks for the June quarter, and marks the first time the iPhone has slipped out of the lead since the carrier started carrying the product in February last year. Although sales could potentially be suffering in the wait for a next-generation iPhone, Doradla suggests that the root cause is Verizon putting the brunt of its marketing into 4G-capable smartphones, namely the Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX.

Apple adds new security feature to Mountain Lion preview
An update to the OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion Developer Preview 4 was released yesterday afternoon, and the Twittersphere was immediately filled with missives about the features people were finding. A tweet by @Lhunar pointed out a new "Mountain Lion Security Updates" system.
The system apparently does daily checks looking for security updates, downloading and installing them automatically or upon restarting your Mac. This shows Apple's growing concern about malware attacks on the Mac platform, particularly after the Flashback attack earlier this year. The system also includes a more secure connection to Apple's update servers.

Older Ohio Apple Store to relocate
Apple's retail store in the Easton Town Center in Columbus Ohio is moving to a new location in the mall. According to ifoAppleStore, Apple will leave its location next to American Eagle Outfitters and will take over the spot of the former Limited store. The new site is being renovated and is blocked by a black construction barricade. Apple is expected to move into the location by the end of the year.
The new store will replace the original Easton Town Center store which opened in 2001. The vintage store sports a classic design that features two backlit Apple logos on either side of the entrance. The black stone and brick exterior sharply contrasts with

Google simuliert Gehirn mit 1000 Rechnern um Katzen auf YouTube zu finden

OK, die Überschrift ist ein kleines bisschen irreführend, denn neben Katzen hat Googles Hirnsimulation aus 1.000 Rechnern mit 16.000 Kernen, die 1 Milliarde Nervenverbindungen darstellen, eben auch noch 19.999 andere Objekte in zufällig ausgewählten Screenshots aus 10 Millionen YouTube-Videos gesucht und gefunden. Wie eine Katze oder ein Hammer oder ein Auto etc. pp. zu erkennen sind, musste das Rechnerhirn dabei selbst herausfinden, wobei es angeblich deutlich besser (70 Prozent) abschnitt, als alle bisherigen, vergleichbaren Simulationen - hinter dieser Erfolgsmeldung verbirgt sich allerdings eine Trefferquote von 15,8 Prozent, weshalb der umsi

Der Designer Haitao Qi hat einen Lösungsvorschlag für das lästige Stauproblem ausgetüftelt, durch das immer mehr Menschen immer mehr Zeit im Großstadtverkehr verlieren. Die Lösung lautet in diesem Fall: Staus nicht verhindern, sondern sich bequem und praktisch in der Blechlawine einrichten. Dazu kann man die Ausstattung des Konzeptautos Cubie nach Bedarf zum Arbeiten oder Abhängen für eine flexible Passagierzahl verändern, womit Cubie zu so etwas wie dem Tourbus für geplagte Pendler wird, die sich dann nur noch einigen müssen, wer jeweils hinterm Steuer fluchen und hupen muss oder darf.

San Diego school system buys almost 26,000 iPads
San Diego's Unified School District has bought almost 26,000 iPads from Apple to distribute to 340 classrooms this fall, says 10 News. The purchase is coming through a voter-sanctioned funding program, Proposition S, which allocates money toward modern technology in local schools. The District's deal will cost it about $15 million, although it is saving some money by opting for the $399 iPad 2, on top of which it is getting an educational discount bringing the price of each tablet down to about $370.

Apple continues to monopolize metal chassis supply
Apple is continuing to dominate demand for metal chassis parts from Asian supply companies, DigiTimes says. The company has reportedly booked "most" of the capacity available to build the parts for its MacBooks, which are now entirely housed in unibody aluminum. Intensifying the situation are Apple's rivals, which DigiTimes' upstream supply chain sources say are compensating for weak ultrabook sales by turning to ultrabook-like notebooks, causing both metal chassis and slim panel shortages.

Sprint iPhone sells better at non-Apple retail chains
The Sprint version of the iPhone is selling much better at third-party vendors than it is through Apple Stores, according to a Consumer Intelligence Research Partners study. The firm polled iPhone buyers over the course of two three-month periods, and recorded that just 9 percent of shoppers in Apple Stores went with Sprint. By comparison, the ratio was 19 percent at Best Buy, and 18 percent at warehouse clubs and other mass-market retailers.

Apple removes claim of virus immunity
As small as the threat may be, Mac users can no longer claim immunity from attack by malicious software online. Many Mac users are starting to recognize this new reality and now Apple does, too. As noted in a recent PC World article, Apple has quietly removed the claim "It doesn't get PC viruses" from its OS X website and replaced it with the phrase "It's built to be safe." Also changed is the paragraph header "Safeguard your data. By Doing Nothing," which now says "Safety. Built right in."

PSA: PS3 firmware update landing today
Sony's third-generation console is primed for new firmware, set to arrive later today and looks to be a largely audio-based refresh. Version 4.20 improves support for Sony's own PlayStation 3 Wireless Stereo Headset, which had some teething troubles with the last update. You can now turn off the option to hear your own voice ringing through your head, or pick from five different volume levels. Facebook: Seitenmanager-App nun auch in Deutschland
Facebook hat die “Facebook-Seitenmanager” nun auch im deutschen App Store platziert. Damit können Administratoren alle Seiten in Facebook nun über eine einzige App betrachten.
Ging vorher auch schon (über die “normale” App), jetzt bekommt man aber eine gezieltere Ansicht und mehr Funktionen: Beispielsweise wie viele Personen mit einem Beitrag erreicht wurden etc.
Die aufgebohrte Seitenverwaltung war zunächst nur online verfügbar, und jetzt mit dieser App auch auf dem iPhone. Eine iPad Variante existiert noch nicht.

Die japanische Firma Kokusai Kogyo, eigentlich auf die Erhebung von Daten für Karten aus der Luft spezialisiert, hat eine Augmented Reality-App in der Entwicklung, die den erwarteten Tsunami direkt in die unmittelbare Umgebung einblendet. If there's been one outstanding gripe with Fujifilm's X-Pro1 camera, it's been the absence of zoom lenses; short of French kissing the subject, you might not get the photos you want. While there isn't much of a solution right this second outside of buying the fixed-lens X10, the Japanese camera designer can say when we'll see an interchangeable XF-mount zoom lens: fall 2012. Apple accuses HTC of lying to get around ITC ban
Following Apple's contention that 28 additional smartphone manufacturer HTC's devices violate the "data tapping" patent that Apple first filed with the ITC about in 2010, HTC has now accused Apple of extending the reach of the complaint, and a full-blown new investigation was required to validate or refute Apple's claim. Bing Maps gets another 165TB of satellite images, Google Earth seen sulking in a corner
Thought that Google had cornered the market on free, overhead-view photo mapping solutions? You clearly don't reside in Redmond, because Bing Maps' aerial image library just got another 165TB worth of hi-res data that covers an additional 38 million square kilometers of the globe. Daily iPhone App: Light Byte provides frenetic color-matching fun
Light Byte is one of the most invention takes on "falling block" games I've seen in a while. In fact, there are a few genres mixed in here, including Snood's kind of color matching gameplay, as well as some excellent combo action. The game starts out with blocks slowly falling toward you on the screen, and it's your job to fire stars (by touching the various block columns) back up at the blocks, hitting the same colors in a row. Blocks that match the color you just hit fall off the screen, and (in the endless mode, anyway) you've got to keep the screen clear for as long as possible.
It's really fun, and the title's groovy out-of-this-world soundtrack really contributes to the feeling that you're building up mega-combos when you can lin

Apple updates Mountain Lion preview with security engine
Apple today has issued a Security Update add-on for its existing Mountain Lion Developer Preview 4 which adds both new security update checking as well as providing for a more secure Software Update for updates generally. The add-on is rolled into an entirely new version of Mountain Lion DP 4 that also includes various bug fixes and is 1.16GB in size. This is the second update to Developer Preview 4 since its release at WWDC earlier this month.

Geneva Sound System Model XS: Swiss design, made for travel
When I was growing up, my folks had a little Swiss travel clock we took on trips. It came in a tan leather case and folded out to a standup clock, and as soon as we were all awake in the morning, they'd fold it down and put it into the suitcase for use the next day. Now, about 40 years later, Geneva Lab has introduced the Geneva Sound System Model XS (US$249.99), a modern take on that old classic.

Hands-on with G-Technology's Mac-friendly, USB 3.0-packing G-Drive slim
When we set out to get hands-on with a hard drive, of all things, you can bet we're going to do more than just pick it up and marvel at how lightweight it is. Here at a gdgt event in New York City, we spotted G-Technology's new Mac-friendly USB 3.0 drives on display and immediately got to work running some speed tests on the thinnest of the bunch, the G-Drive slim. Though transfer rates varied, both download and upload speeds tended to hover around 95 MB/s, and that was after ten or so runs in the Blackmagic benchmark. iRobot Roomba 790 with Wireless Command Center hands-on (video)
What to get the homeowner who has everything? Perhaps a robotic vacuum styled in the fashion of an RC toy will fit the bill. Here at a GDGT event in New York City we happened upon iRobot's Roomba 790, which comes with a touchscreen remote for manually controlling where the bot goes. The controller -- make that the "Wireless Command Center" -- has an interface matching the one on the 790 itself, so there's no second set of menus to master here. E-book price fixing court date set for 2013
The Justice Department has been ready to take Apple to task over these recent allegations of e-book price fixing, and now a court date has been set: Apple will have to face the music almost a year from now, on June 3, 2013. Apple, Macmillan and the Penguin Group are the targets in the case, and while each of them has denied any formal price-fixing in the past, the court will do a little formal digging into those claims.
A year is quite a long ways away, but stay tuned and we'll see exactly what case the Justice Department plans to lay out against Apple and the other publishing companies then.

Must See HDTV (June 25th - July 1st)
Louie Comedian Louis CK's offbeat comedy show returns to FX this week for its third season, and while it's not distributed via a PayPal-supported downloadable honor system, we'll watch anyway. The show's been among the funniest selections out there for the last few seasons and we expect it to remain there. Second iOS 6 beta adds Photo Stream, Reading List toggles
Users are already starting to discover some minor differences in iOS 6 beta 2. 9to5Mac notes that people can, for instance, toggle Shared Photo Streams on and off, controlling whether or not previously shared photos can be viewed by others, or if a user has access to friends' streams. Another new toggle is a relocated Reading List cellular sync option; whereas people once had to go into Safari settings to change it, the toggle is now located next to ones for iTunes and iCloud documents.
