iTry – Tag 1 bis 7
Das Projekt “iTry”. Ich arbeite vier Wochen lang beruflich und privat nur mit Apple-Produkten. Als bekennender Windows- und Androidfan kann das zu einigen lustigen Momenten führen. Vor allem die “Aha-Effekte” und Erkenntnisse möchte ich mich euch teilen.

Den folgenden Text habe ich (natürlich) auf einem MacBook (Air) verfasst. Dabei sei gleich die sehr gute Tastatur und der (für mich) perfekte Druckpunkt erwähnt. Dass ich Anfangs öfter mal cmd und Q (für “quit window”) gedrückt habe, als eine E-Mail-Adresse gefragt war, sollte jeden Mac’ler wissentlich zum schmunzeln bringen. Google announces iOS Notification Center support for Gmail
Google has announced some good news for prospective Mountain Lion users on its official blog: The company will tie Gmail notifications into Apple's Notification Center, which means you'll be able to know at a moment's notice when you've got emails to read. The integration will support banners, full alerts, and options for the lock screen, and Google says its notifications will be up to five times faster as well, so you'll know right away when that important message comes in.

iOS 6 Beta 2: Das sind die Neuerungen
Die Neuerungen in der 2.Beta von iOS 6 halten sich in Grenzen. Bislang gibt es keine Abstürze oder größere Fehler.
Shared Photo Stream:
Diese Option lässt sich nun deaktivieren bzw. aktivieren. Komische Sache: Laut Apple-Website ab iPhone 4 aufwärts kompatibel ist diese Option bislang nur auf meinem iPad 3 verfügbar, auf dem iPhone 4 jedoch nicht (beide Beta 2).

iOS 6: Das ist die neue “Shared-Photostream”-Funktion und so funktioniert sie
Neu in iOS 6 ist die “Shared-Photostream” – Funktion. Was steckt dahinter? Man kann nun eigenen Fotostreams erstellen. Also Alben die für die Öffentlichkeit oder nur für bestimmte Personen zugänglich sind.
Wie funktioniert’s?
Der “Standard-Fotostream” bleibt. Hinzu kommt aber eine Option weitere anzulegen. Diesen kann man an bestimmte Personen oder der breiten Öffentlichkeit richten und anschließend einzelne Fotos hinzufügen.
Sinn dahinter
Fotos können so ganz einfach mit der Familie oder Freunden geteilt werden.

Crayolascope hacks toys into foot-thick 3D display
Artist Blair Neal, as many other great creators have before him, turned to children's toys as the source of inspiration for his latest project. Crayolascope is a rudimentary 3D display hacked together from several Glow Books, a light-up play on a flip-book from the titular company. The installation, currently housed at the New York Hall of Science in Flushing, layers 12 of its component clear plastic sheets to create a roughly one-foot deep display that plays a simple pre-drawn animation. The whole thing is controlled by an Arduino Mega, that can either play back the neon scribbles at varying speeds (controlled by a knob built into the console) or scrub through frame by frame.

New York Times to supply content to Flipboard
The New York Times has signed a deal allowing its content to appear in Flipboard, both parties have announced. Beginning on June 28th the Times will become available as a source option in the app, including images, videos, and full-sized articles. Readers will, however, still need a subscription to browse the newspaper's content.

NYT: Apple's retail reps getting raises, but pay still doesn't match results
The New York Times has examined Apple's retail employees, from their interviews to training and paychecks. In fact, much of the article focuses on the earnings of sales staff.
While many sales-level employees earn more than those in comparable positions with competitors, they generate more in sales, too. The Times figured that Apple's retail employees pull in US$473,000 in revenue each on average. By contrast, the National Retail Federation notes that the average per-employee revenue in electronics and appliance stores is $206,000.

Gmail iOS app updates with notifications, alternate senders
Google has released an important update of its Gmail client for iOS. The main change is the addition of Notification Center support, which enables banners, alerts, and lockscreen pop-ups for messages. When composing email users now also have the option of picking a different "send as" address, so long as the address is already configured in Gmail.

Improve your Safari YouTube watching experience
In recent months, have you noticed your Safari-based YouTube watching experience degrade further and further? Are you hopping into Chrome or FireFox just so you can see NyanCats fly? TUAW reader Tim has uncovered a reason this might be happening.
He writes, "The last few months, I've been ticked off at YouTube because it seems like every video I tried to play would keep reloading over and over and the page wouldn't load. I tried resetting Safari, reloading Flash, (ugh), etc, etc, etc. Things would work fine on other browsers, but not Safari."

Developer: iOS 6 Beta 2 erschienen – Over-the-Air Download
Für alle die eine Beta-Version von iOS 6 auf ihrem Apple-Device installiert haben: Über die Softwareaktualisierung ist nun das zweite Update erschienen.
Für die iPad Version müssen ca. 520 MB heruntergeladen werden.
In den Release-Notes werden Bugfixes angesprochen, und es warten auf den ersten Blick keine nennenswerten Neuerungen.

Apple is now distributing a second beta of iOS 6 to developers. The update is reportedly labeled build 10A5338d, and measures 322MB. Its exact contents are unsure, since Apple only lists changes as including "bug fixes and improvements."

iOS 6: Zweite Beta-Version für Entwickler verfügbar
Seit kurzem steht die zweite Beta-Version von iOS 6 für Entwickler per OTA-Update (over the air) und auch im Entwickler-Portal zum Download bereit.
Durchschnittlich 300 Megabyte wiegt iOS 6 Beta 2 (Build 10A5338d) und bringt mehrheitlich Bugfixes mit. Erstmals zeigt sich auch ein animiertes Zahnräder-Icon im Zuge des Update-Downloads.
Weiters wurde auch eine Beta-Verison von iOS 6 für das Apple TV 2 sowie eine neue Xcode Version 4.5 Developer Preview 2 veröffentlicht.

Flipboard enters content deal with the New York TImes
The New York Times announced today that it is bringing its subscription content to the popular social reader app Flipboard. Starting Thursday, June 28, subscribers to The New York Times will be able to read full articles, browse image galleries and watch videos using the Flipboard app. This is the first time all the NYT's content is available through a third-party service. Previously, the publication only made a part of its content available outside its own digital subscriptions.

It took quite awhile for the official Gmail app to arrive for our Apple-toting friends, but when it debuted, it lacked many features enjoyed by Android users. The wait between iOS 6's unveiling and its planned fall release just got a little bit shorter, as Apple has just pushed out beta 2. If you're in the developer crowd that can try it out, don't expect any revelations: the primarily focus is on the bug fixes that nudge the software closer to a final release. Cricket prepaid iPhone sales begin today
Today is the day that prepaid wireless carrier Cricket starts selling the iPhone without a contract. According to a CNET report, customers were lining up to buy the 8 GB iPhone 4 and the 16 GB iPhone 4S which were available for US$399 and $499, respectively. The phones include a $55 monthly plan that gives each customer unlimited calling, unlimited text messaging and 2.3 GB of data. David Coulthard kennen die meisten noch als Formel 1-Piloten. Dass er aber auch für Weltrekorde jenseits der schnellsten Rennrunde zu haben ist, zeigt dieses ein wenig absurde Video für Mercedes-Benz. Der am weitesten geschlagene Golfball, der mit einem fahrenden Auto gefangen wurde. Klingt ein bisschen wie die längste einhändig geschriebene SMS, die um Dunkeln getippt wurde. Dass das aber nicht so einfach ist, kann man sich denken. Rund 275 Meter vom Tee wurde der 286 km/h schnelle Golfball in einem SLS AMG Roadster gefangen. Apple pulls ad language claiming OS X's immunity to viruses
Apple has changed some of its OS X marketing to discard claims about the OS being immune to viruses, notes Computerworld Australia. On a page that previously claimed that the software "doesn't get PC viruses," Apple has swapped the text with "It's built to be safe"; "Safeguard your data. By doing nothing," meanwhile, has been replaced with "Safety. Built in." It's not clear exactly when Apple's marketing strategy changed.

Servicing MacBook Pro with Retina display requires special classes and test
It's no secret that the MacBook Pro with Retina display is a difficult machine to service. Now it turns out that Mac Geniuses and technicians at Apple-Authorized Service Providers need to take two special classes and pass a special exam to be qualified to service the device.

I liked Color Splash Studio when I reviewed it last fall as a Mac app. Now Color Splash Studio is available for iOS devices, and it has retained the features that made it a winner.
Basically, you import a color photo from your camera roll, or take one live. You set the image to black and white, or some other monochrome color, and then paint the color back in to selected parts, like a flower or a face. The result can be quite artistic, and something different from the standard color image. Like all effects, it should not be over used, but when used sparingly and with thought it can be quite effective.

Daily iPhone App: Ocarina 2 makes for more virtual tunes
I'll be honest -- since the first Ocarina app came out, I've become a fan of Smule, the company behind it. Its mix of creative energy and technical know-how is a great match for Apple and a good example of software made well. But I have never really been a fan of Ocarina the app, just because I think blowing into your iPhone is kind of silly.

Am vergangenen Freitag hat AMD die Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition (ComputerBase-Test) vorgestellt. Das Ziel der Grafikkarte: Die GeForce GTX 680 von Nvidia zu schlagen. Researchers at the MIT Media Lab have developed an ambient lighting system for video that would make Philips' Ambilight tech jealous. Acer VP: Surface likely to damage MS partner relationships
Oliver Ahrens, Acer's senior VP and Europe president, has declared Microsoft's secretive Surface line of tablets doomed to failure. Specifically citing business focus issues and a change in core business principles, Ahrens urged Acer's primary software partner to focus on Windows 8 and pre-existing business arrangements instead of the potentially-risky product launch. You can strap the GoPro HD Hero 2 to any number of things to document your extreme adventures in high definition. However, for all of the improvements in the second version, we found it to be distractingly heavy, difficult to mount and with audio that left plenty to the imagination. Still, a few days of testing, even with some aerial combat thrown in, can't match constant use over the last six months.
