Microsoft has issued the first official SmartGlass SDK to Xbox developers, according to an announcement. The software is needed to create SmartGlass Activities. Facebook brings Like button to third-party mobile apps

Facebook is opening up part of its API to allow mobile apps to take advantage of the Like button. In a post on the company's Developer Blog, Facebook lays out possibilities engendered by letting developers build the famous option directly into their mobile and web apps. The new functionality is built into the Open Graph system, which allows apps to tie activities directly into users' Timelines. Facebook hopes that developers will use the feature to tie their apps closer to the social network, as seen in Instagram and foursquare, which have already implemented Like.

Erstes "Sandkasten-Opfer": TextExpander 4

Nicht mehr im App Store erhältlich TextExpander erspart Vielschreibern viel Tipperei, indem es selbst definierbare Abkürzungen für häufig verwendete Textbausteine ermöglicht. Aus "mmfg" wird so zum Beispiel automatisch "Mit freundlichen Grüssen". Das funktioniert in den meisten Anwendungen und sogar Bilder lassen sich einbinden. Heute hat Smile TextExpander 4 für den Mac vorgestellt. Anders als die bisherige Version ist das Upgrade jedoch nicht im Mac App Store erhältlich, sondern nur auf der Anbieter-Website. Tumblr 3.0 for iPhone completely rebuilt

Easy blogging service Tumblr has released an update for its official iPhone app, and its interface has been completely rebuilt. The dashboard is cleaner, and it's done away with that custom bottom bar found in the original app. There are almost too many big updates to count: You can now upload high res pictures and browse them in a new interface, you can search tags, notifications have been gathered in one place (hopefully not in your feed, like the last version), and the whole app is faster to load, navigate and use. Safari 6 Developer Preview 2 fixes address bar crashes

Apple is already reportedly supplying developers with a second preview version of Safari 6. The new code fixes a series of crashes caused by the old preview, which were related to entering two periods at the end of a string in the address bar, whether manually or through auto-completion. Apple's employee hardware discount program officially begins

Apple employees can now take part in a new Employee Purchase Plan which started on Wednesday, says a report by MacNN. The discount offers employees $500 off select Mac computers and $250 off iPads. It does not include the low-price Mac mini or the Retina MacBook Pro. The discount also is separate from the employee's current 25 percent discount. Employees who have passed the 90-day probationary period can take advantage of the offer, and they can use their discount once every three years. Besides this extra discount, Apple also gave retail employees a well-deserved pay raise that could be as high as 25 percent, depending on the store and employee performance.

Stitcher has redesigned its streaming radio app for iOS and Android, fitting it with a raft of new features to make finding new content easy. Android Jelly Bean revealed as version 4.1 on Galaxy Nexus checkout page

We have yet to get any official confirmation from Mountain View, but it looks like Jelly Bean just got a touch more official. The as-yet-unannounced Android OS was outed as version 4.1 on the Galaxy Nexus Google Wallet checkout page. 4.1 does in fact make Jelly Bean a more incremental update than the potentially more significant Ice Cream Sandwich. Sandboxing keeps TextExpander 4 out of the Mac App Store

Smile released TextExpander 4 today, with a whole slew of new features. But don't zip over to the Mac App Store to find it -- the company is one of the first and most notable to remove an app from the Mac App Store as it can't be sandboxed. Sandboxing is required for Mountain Lion apps that will be sold through the Mac App Store, and protects systems and users by limiting the resources apps can access. That doesn't mean that TextExpander 4 cannot be used on Mountain Lion Macs; in fact, Smile made a point in their PR blast this morning that the app is signed with a Developer ID from Apple to work with Gatekeeper in Mountain Lion. Australian court fines Apple $2.27 million over '4G iPad' claims

It's a good thing Apple has that huge cash reserve, as the company is going to have to fork over a lot of money Down Under for "deliberately" misleading Australians about the 4G capabilities of the new iPad. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) brought an action against Apple, saying that the company misled Australians by advertising new iPad connectivity with 4G networks in Australia. Sources: Next-gen iPhone could support China Mobile 3G

The next-generation iPhone will likely not only support standard 3G and 4G networks, but also the China Mobile version of 3G, TD-SCDMA, says Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu. Based on "supply chain work" by his firm, Wu suggests that the next iPhone will expand on the world phone status of the iPhone 4S by adding both LTE 4G and TD-SCDMA. China Mobile is the only carrier in the world to use TD-SCDMA, something that has so far interfered with iPhone compatibility.

Sony, Sumitomo push laser projectors forward with a new, more powerful green laser diode

As cool as lasers are, so far there are precious few commercially available display devices available that use them. That may change with this new green semiconductor laser diode announced by Sony and Sumitomo, capable of the brightness necessary to replace the more expensive light sources used to fill in the middle of the RGB setup. According to the two companies, it's the world's first one capable of over 100mW power at 530nm, which they think will make it a fit for both advanced projectors and compact light projectors

Oracle settles for $0 in Java-Android patent case

The contentious Oracle lawsuit against Google's use of Java code in Android, which ended in a mixed and muted exoneration for Google, took another turn Wednesday as the two tech titans agreed to a zero-dollar award. Presiding Judge William Alsup only asked "is there a catch I need to be aware of." Apple store employee denies Farsi speakers iPad, iPhone sale

Two Apple store employees in Georgia have been accused of racially profiling Farsi-speaking shoppers, and refusing to sell them trade-embargoed iPads and iPhones. I can't say that I'm a huge fan of Feral Interactive: They're a company that specializes in porting games from other platforms over to the Mac, and I'm more interested in natively developed and published Mac games.
