Former Apple UI designer joins Facebook to lead product design team

It remains to be seen exactly what he'll be involved with, but Facebook's new Product Design Manager brings quite a background with him to the job. Until just a few months ago, Chris Weeldreyer was a UI Design Manager at Apple (a role held for over eight years) where, as The Next Web reports, he was responsible for the company's iWeb and Numbers software, and has been named in a number of Apple's patent applications. Apple hits HTC with counterclaim lawsuit for failure to FRAND license 4G patents

It's been far too quiet on the litigation front here at Engadget lately, but thankfully Apple's broken our courtroom news dry spell with a freshly filed counterclaim in the Eastern District of Virginia federal court. FOSS Patents reports that Apple's target is HTC, who Apple claims has abused two patents essential to the 4G/LTE wireless standard by using them in a legal action against Cupertino. In doing so, Apple asserts HTC breached its FRAND licensing obligations. Next iPhone to feature new 19-pin dock connector

A new dock connector design for Apple products has been bandied about for quite some time, but it's now beginning to look like the rumors are true. Study: Average SSD prices almost halved over last 12 months

Solid state drive prices have fallen by as much as 65 percent in the last 12 months, according to data. Research by The Tech Report finds that, in contrast to flooding in Thailand affecting standard hard drive production and causing price hikes, the price of SSDs is continuing to drop, with an average price drop of 46 percent -- almost half -- compared to the same point last year.

The energy required to charge an iPad

All of our electronic gizmos, whether as large as a 27" iMac or as tiny as an iPod nano, need electricity to thrive. Om Malik, the brains behind GigaOm, wondered just how much energy it took to keep an iPad going. Fortunately for Malik, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) has published the results of new research that details how much an iPad costs in terms of electricity. EPRI conducted its study at its power utilization lab in Knoxville, Tennessee. Study: iOS device charging costs shockingly low

A new study has revealed exact figures on how much money users spend charging their iPads and iPhones. According to the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), charging a current-generation iPad every other day from completely drained costs the user $1.36 per year. The study's intention is to evaluate the United States' year-over-year power use, but EPRI extended the test to understand whether the rapid growth of tablets in the "post-PC era" is adding to power consumption, or reducing it.

Just about every time I turn around, there's another new external battery pack for iOS devices that has more storage capacity than the previous capacity leader. A change to copyright law in Japan sees harsher penalties on illegal downloaders of movies and music. Japan's legislature, the Diet, made downloading a crime punishable by a fine of two million yen ($25,000) or up to two years in prison. T-Mob's variant of the Galaxy S III made its in-store debut on this very day, and we just had a chance to go hands-on with the flagship smartphone. I first got to meet Dave Taylor last week at WWDC -- he's one of the original members of id software, and is responsible in part for classic games like Quake, Doom, and Wolfenstein 3D. These days, he's still working as a game producer, but has also taken on the role of teacher.
