Kindle app update adds children's books, comics
Amazon has pushed a long-awaited update to its Kindle app that adds children's books, graphic novels and comics. The availability of these books that take full advantage of a color screen was one of the marketing tactics behind the release of the Kindle Fire, and it's nice to see them on the iOS Kindle app as well. Other improvements specifically target the iPad, with smaller margins and a cleaner look.
I noticed there were a few bugs that Amazon needs to work out. I tried loading a sample of Watchmen on my iPad to try out, and the app kept crashing even after a reboot. Some Engadget users noted they were having the

Solair Altius unmanned aerial vehicle, eyes-on (video)
It could just be us, but we tend to dwell on some fairly negative connotations when we hear the phrase "unmanned aerial vehicle" -- after all, the lion's share of media attention devoted to devices in that category tend to focus on military applications. Vizio's 24- and 27-inch Ivy Bridge all-in-ones get official
Vizio recently announced that its first PCs -- the ones we glimpsed at CES back in January -- will ship in June. From our previous hands-on time, we already knew that the company's 24- and 27-inch all-in-ones sport 1080p screens and include HDMI passthrough for using them as HDTVs even with the PC portion turned off. Motorola Atrix 3 'Dinara' powers through the FCC en route to AT&T
The Motorola Dinara, also known as the third-generation Atrix, has been making the occasional stop at the rumor mill to drop off knowledge bombs, but now it looks like we have some official FCC documentation to supplement the intel. Going undercover as the MB886, it sports the proper LTE bands for AT&T and even uses the same model naming convention as its two predecessors. Spotify users in Germany no longer need Facebook account to register
Spotify users in Germany no longer need a Facebook account to register for the music service, Digital Music News reports. Since Spotify buddied up with the social network last year, users across the globe have had to hand over their Facebook info to create an account and start streaming. Chinese court delays Proview v. Apple ruling for talks
The Higher Peopleís Court of Guangdong is delaying its decision on an Apple appeal asserting ownership of the iPad trademark in China, according to Zhao Le, a spokesman for the court's foreign affairs office. Apple has long maintained that it owns the rights to the iPad trademark in mainland China, having made a deal with local owner Proview in 2009. In November, though, a lower court ruled in Proview's favor in a lawsuit, arguing that Proview's Shenzhen division was the actual owner of the mark, but hadn't been represented in the deal.

Side-by-side browsers on MacBook Pro with Retina display
The biggest selling feature of the next generation MacBook Pro is its Retina display. The notebook has an impressive 15.4-inch LED-backlit display with 2880-by-1800 resolution at 220 pixels per inch.
The specs look great on paper and according to a display-focused review by The Verge, the display looks amazing in person, too. This improvement is best seen in a side-by-side shot of Chrome on the non-Retina MacBook Pro and a Retina MacBook Pro. iCloud: Server-Informationen zum Einrichten auf Nicht-Apple-Geräte (BlackBerry, Linux und Co.)
Apples Webservice ist zugeschnitten auf die die Apfel-Welt. In diesem System funktioniert das Einrichten und Synchronisation exzellent. Die iCloud bekommt weitere Funktionen, und als iOS und OS X Nutzer wird man von der Integration richtig verwöhnt.
Aber wie von Apple gewohnt: Das Einrichten auf anderen Geräten ist oft problematisch, und wird nicht direkt von Apple beworben. Die iCloud ist und soll für die Apple-Welt sein.
Doch Apple verwendet zum Verbinden mit den eigenen Service offene Webstandards (was auch sonst), und so ist es meist eine reine Einstellungssache.

Judge puts Apple vs. Motorola hearing back on deck, asks the two to put up or shut up
Well, we did ask you to "tune in next week." Just seven days after he tentatively dismissed one of Apple's patent lawsuits against Motorola, Judge Richard Posner has given both sides a chance to prove their cases are worthwhile in a hearing on June 20th. Nintendo's Iwata says Wii U's second screen was nearly scrapped due to price
The idea of a second screen experience is fairly central to the Wii U as it is today, but it looks like it could have nearly been shoved aside as just another concept. In an interview published today by The Telegraph, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said that the company "almost gave up on the idea of the additional screen" during its final discussions about the console, adding that "this was due to our concern over the expected high cost, it may not have been feasible to create this and sell it at a reasonable price point for the consumers." Analyst calls for 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro in October
Apple will likely introduce a 13-inch version of the Retina MacBook Pro in October, claims KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Project Hexapod: eyes-on with Gimpy, the (half-scale) giant robot leg
Admittedly, this is one of our shorter editors on staff. But he is, believe it or not, an adult male that stands five foot, eight inches tall. Which puts that giant chunk of metal next to him at about five feet. Turns out, that slab of black steel is a prototype robot leg -- and one that's only half scale. LG Eclipse may be coming to Sprint and AT&T by Halloween
After initial specs and a few decent pics bubbled up to the surface of the internet, the "superphone" known as the LG Eclipse is shedding its shyness. Comparing Google maps and Apple's maps on iOS 6
In iOS 6, Apple is ditching its Google-backed Maps application and using its own mapping solution instead. With turn-by-turn navigation and 3D flyover, Apple's new mapping application is a big jump from its predecessor which lacked these convenient features.
Gizmodo has access to both Google Maps on the iPhone and Apple's iOS 6 Maps and did a side-by-side comparison that looks at map details, traffic data, directions, and satellite view. They also compare Street View, but Apple's map solution does not have this feature.

Chameleon adaptive Android home screen returns to view, Kickstarter

AMD: APUs ab 2013 auch im Server-Segment

Skype 5.8 ready for Mountain Lion, improves contact list
Skype 5.8 hit the streets today, and for those who may not have been happy about the full-screen user interface that was introduced in Skype 5.0, it's an update worth loading.

ASUS PadFone gets its first firmware update, minor bugs removed
We've been regularly poking the "Check Update" button on our PadFone since the release of our epic review, and just as promised, today ASUS has finally delivered the hybrid device's first OTA update. While the release notes have yet to pop up, we can see that the system firmware on our Taiwanese model's been upgraded to IML74K.CHT_PadFone-9.18.8.41_CHT_9.1.15-0, which has eliminated some of the bugs that we had reported to ASUS. For instance, the missing change-keyboard button in ASUS' Chinese handwriting input method has been reinstated, and trace input in ASUS' English keyboard is now working properly. CIO Journal walks back claim of Retina MacBook Pro's demand on bandwidth
In March, the Wall Street Journal's CIO Journal claimed that the iPad 3 would burden corporate networks because of its high-definition display. This week, the same writer doubled down on the claim for the new MacBook Pro, arguing that "better quality displays require more network bandwidth." Was lange währt Google hat seinen Buchladen in Deutschland verfügbar gemacht. Mit der üblichen Mischung aus Umsonst-Klassikern und einem monstermäßig schlecht sortierten Sortiment an deutschsprachigen Büchern, die niemand braucht. Gut, das ist missverständlich. Microsoft plans 'major announcement' for Monday, June 18th
It's not offering much in the way of hints, but Microsoft has just invited the press to an event in Los Angeles on Monday, June 18th for what it promises will be a "major Microsoft announcement." While it didn't have any more to say than that, the company's Windows Phone summit does follow later that week, and there's been no shortage of Microsoft-related rumors as of late, including a possible acquisition of Yammer (reported today by Bloomberg), and long-running talk of Office for iPad, which was again revived earlier this month. Judah Sher's cubicle wasn't originally on our slate of scheduled stops during yesterday's trip to the Artisan's Asylum hacker space in Somerville, Massachusetts, but the man behind the Kikori CNC gantry router lured us in with a rather large piece of plywood leaned up against a wall, reading "Sindrian Arts Welcomes Engadget," our familiar logo carved out in big letters. Forthcoming Chrome browser update to support Retina display on MacBook Pro
It might be a while before most apps are rewritten to take advantage of the new Retina display MacBook Pro, but Google isn't waiting. According to Anandtech, the nightly-build channel of Google's Chrome browser -- Chrome Canary -- already includes basic support for the 2880 x 1800 pixel display, rendering text and images much more sharply. Canary isn't "the next version" of Chrome, as some reports have it; it's the bleeding-edge development version that trades stability for new features.

Customers report new Retina MacBook Pros are shipping
Apple customers who ordered the new Retina models of the MacBook Pro can start doing their happy dance -- shipping notifications are being sent to those who placed their orders from the online Apple Store on the day of the WWDC keynote on June 11.
The delivery dates for the new boxes are scheduled for early next week, just in time for the developers who maxed out their credit cards ordering the new equipment to get home and hopefully recover from WWDC.
Let's all hope that the first round of the Retina MacBook Pros are well-built and ready to go -- iFixit's teardown of the new model indicated that

Opera 12 for the desktop goes live with camera support, browser themes
Version 12 of Opera's desktop browser has been in beta for some time, but today it's making the step up to a full release for Macs and PCs. Along with hardware acceleration, speed improvements and an overhauled security badge, the update includes new browser skins (some 100 themes are available). One of the biggest tweaks, however, is the addition of camera support -- Opera 12 lets your webcam work with web applications, including an Asteroids-style game called FaceKat and Photo Booth. Attention world: the MacBook Pro with Retina display does have optical audio out
Please stop saying it doesn't. Despite it not appearing on Apple's specs page, there is no conspiracy, and Apple hasn't dropped the feature. The MacBook Pro with Retina display has the same combination 3.5mm-analog-and-S/PDIF-digital output port all other Macs have used for several years now.

Baidu to split revenue with Apple in Chinese iOS deal
Chinese web search company Baidu will share some of its advertising revenue with Apple as a part of the deal to be featured in iOS, according to Baidu VP Wang Jing. While Baidu will only be another option for iOS search in China -- Google will remain the default -- Baidu currently handles 80 percent of Chinese web searches, and Wang says that the company is willing to cope with expenses in order to get smartphone users, for instance by offering free services like music streaming.

Time, Inc. will sell its magazines on Apple's Newsstand
Laura Lang, CEO of Time, Inc. and Eddy Cue, Apple's VP for Internet software and service, confirmed in a phone interview that Time's magazine lineup is coming to the iPhone and iPad. Samsung has opened up about the measures it took in order to maintain secrecy in the run up to the launch of the Galaxy S III. The project was so top secret that engineer Buyong-Joon Lee even flatly denied what he was doing to his 11-year-old son. The next version of Google's Chrome browser, codenamed 'Canary,' will support Apple's new MacBook Pro with Retina Display. OS 6 vs. Android 4.0: Vergleich

Following complaints from patent holder Prentke Romich Company and Semantic Compaction Systems, Apple has removed augmentative speech application Speak for Yourself from the iOS App Store. Speak for Yourself allowed speech-challenged children to tap pictures on-screen to string words into sentences which were then spoken aloud by the iPad. The patent case involving Speak for Yourself's developers and Prentke Romich continues in Pennsylvania's western district court. Forrester: Work-mandated 'bring your own computer' imminent
Industry analyst company Forrester Research revealed this week that 53 percent of employees are using personally-owned technology in the workplace, a five percent increase from last year. While Apple talked about a few new iOS 6 features during the keynote here at WWDC, there are always plenty of new features hidden in the operating system, some that we won't even fully hear about until the OS actually goes out to the public. HTC was understandably upset when its first ITC complaint against Apple was tossed out. HTC gives up ITC complaint against Apple
Smartphone maker HTC has decided not to pursue an appeal of an ITC ruling that Apple had not infringed on its patents, filing for a motion to dismiss the appeal before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) and thus finally ending it's two-year-old ITC case against Apple. The ITC had found Apple innocent of infringing on four HTC patents back in February, but HTC had initially filed for an appeal. The company still has ITC cases against Apple through S3 Graphics.

Apple Store: Aktualisierte App bringt Express Checkout
Abseits von neuen MacBooks und iOS 6 hat Apple heute der eigenen Apple-Store-App einige neue Funktionen spendiert. Mit Express Checkout kann nun auch mit dem iPhone bequemer im Apple Store eingekauft werden.
In Deutschland hat Apple der App-Store-App* in Version 2.2 lediglich diese eine neue Funktion spendiert. Weitere Änderungen werden nicht genannt.

Ping: Einstellung gegen Ende des Jahres
Apple soll sich nun dazu entschlossen haben das soziale Netzwerk Ping zu schließen, das weit hinter den Erwartungen zurückliegt. We often hear about games reaching one million downloads, but, today, educational app Motion Math announced it has reached this notable milestone, too. Motion Math develops four math-oriented titles for the iPad and the iPhone including its self-titled debut, Motion Math. Apple issues update for new MacBook Air models
Two days after issuing an update for the (then) five-hour-old new MacBook Pro line, Apple has matched it with a similar update for the new (Mid 2012) MacBook Air models. While most of even the earliest buyers have yet to receive their machines, Apple retails stores and resellers have had limited stock and thus there are owners who already need the update. NASA's black hole-hunting NuSTAR mission launched today
The black hole-hunting telescope NASA announced last month launched from Kwajalein Atoll in the central Pacific Ocean today. The $165 million NuSTAR mission will spend two years scouring the universe for black holes by scanning X-ray light at higher energies than its predecessors. According to Space.com, NuSTAR will especially target high-energy regions of the universe where "matter is falling onto black holes, as well as the leftovers from dead stars after they've exploded in supernovas." Microsoft updates iPhone app to control Xbox 360
Microsoft has dropped an update for its My Xbox Live app in the App Store, and it adds a pretty significant bit of functionality. You can now control your Xbox 360 over a wireless network directly from your iPhone. The app can see recent console activity, browse and play media, and even hit fast forward, rewind, and other media controls. It's pretty wild, you're controlling Microsoft hardware with Apple hardware. Someone find Bill Gates and ask him what he thinks about that one!

Judge greenlights anti-tracking lawsuit against Apple
US District Judge Lucy Koh -- based in San Jose, California -- has authorized a lawsuit accusing Apple of giving advertisers and analytics firms access to personal data whenever someone downloaded a free iOS app, says Reuters.
