Broadcast TV networks, Dish Network file lawsuits over its new Auto Hop ad skipping feature
Dish Network shocked us just a couple of weeks ago by upgrading its new Hopper DVRs with "Auto Hop" ad skipping that targeted prime time programming on broadcast TV captured via its PrimeTime Anytime feature, and predictably, the networks aren't happy. After several executives took shots at the service during upfronts for the new fall programming in the past few weeks, Fox has filed suit in US District Court, while Dish Network responded with its own request for a court order specifying that it does not infringe on the TV network's copyrights.

Report: Apple's Europe chief to bid company adieu
Pascal Cagni, Apple vice president for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, is stepping down from the position, reports French newspaper Le Figaro. Cagni, who has been with Apple since 2000, is said to have tendered his resignation yesterday. Cagni steps down in the midst of a successful stretch, as Gartner recently reported that Apple's European sales were up 20 percent year-over-year by the end of 2011.

Intel posts x86-friendly Android 4.0 image, lets you feel the need for speed
Android developers are all too familiar with not-so-hot emulator performance, so it's a relief that there's now an system image in a native x86 for testing. While you'll still likely want to test on ARM, the x86 image will both help ferret out bugs specific to Intel's architecture as well as provide a much faster experience debugging apps now that the ARM-to-Intel translation isn't needed on top of running a whole second operating system. It's not perfectly up to date, running on Android 4.0.3, but it's close enough that the environment will mimic much of what users see -- and a big help if you're jumping into writing

Ask iLounge: iTunes TV show size totals don’t match actual disk storage
Q: I’m seeing a really confusing inconsistency in iTunes that I’m hoping you can help explain how to fix as I’ve been tearing my hair out trying to figure out what’s wrong. The problem is that the total storage space that iTunes says it’s using for my TV shows is way off when compared to the actual disk space being used, by dozens of gigabytes in fact. Bump app for Android and iOS adds desktop photo sharing
Bump has managed to garner quite a following among iPhone and Android users, but they've so far only been able to transfer files between two mobile devices, not between their phone and their home computer. The company's managed to find a workaround of sorts to that limitation though, and has today rolled out a new feature that will let you send photos (and only photos) from your phone to your desktop. To do so, you'll first have to update the Bump app on your phone and then head to the Bump website, at which point you can simply tap the spacebar to transfer your photos (with your phone if you want to keep the whole "bump" motif going). As you can probably surmise, that means photos are transferred to Bump's website and not

Briefly: Bump photo transfers, Facebook app updates
Application and file sharing app Bump (Free) has been updated to allow for photo transfers between a phone and a computer. Users of the app can go to the Bump website on a computer, then after selecting photos to share, can bump the phone into the spacebar to send the images to the browser. Images could then be saved to the computer or shared through social networks with a short link.

Third-gen iPad surpasses original in US sales
Just two months after being introduced, the third-generation 2012 iPad has managed to catch up to the market share of the first-generation iPad in the US, market analysis firm Localytics reports. The new model now accounts for over 20 percent of all US-based iPads, just over the percentage of active first-generation iPads. The iPad 2, released in 2011 and still available new for $100 less than its original price, leads the pack.

Apple licenses SimpleAir patents, avoids infringement suit
Apple has reportedly established a licensing agreement with patent holder SimpleAir, putting an end to the patent infringement battle that began late in 2009. SimpleAir had filed its original lawsuit in the federal district court for the Eastern District of Texas, a venue frequented by plaintiffs in intellectual-property lawsuits, however the settlement was said to have been reached shortly before the formal proceedings commenced.

If we believe Japan's Nikkei, the decision by Hon Hai Precision Industry (that is, Foxconn's daddy) to buy a stake in Sharp was really just the start of a long, torrid love affair in LCD production. Solar Impulse takes off for Morocco on first sun-powered transcontinental flight
The sun-powered Solar Impulse plane is gradually working up to a trip around the globe, with the most recent benchmark being its first international flight in 2011. Now Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg are taking the jumbo jet-size plane on its first transcontinental journey. The Solar Impulse set off for Morocco today, and its pilots will stop in Madrid along the way. The goal is to complete the 1,554-mile trip by next week, and the big challenge will be crossing cloudy regions like the Pyrenees mountains separating France and Spain.

Star Walk and Solar Walk apps now track the Space X Dragon
The two bestselling astronomy apps, Star Walk and Solar Walk for iOS, can now find and track the Space X Dragon, the first commercial vehicle to visit the International Space Station.
The Dragon was launched Tuesday. When you search for the spacecraft, you'll see it's current position. As I write this, it's in orbit next to the ISS. Using the augmented-reality feature, you likely can find the Dragon when it is in a good position overhead.

Foxconn, Sharp to build China plant for iPhone displays
Just two months after Foxconn bought a 10 percent stake in Sharp, the two companies have announced a collaboration on a plant in Chengdu, China that will be used to build iPhone displays and potentially displays for other products. Foxconn will build the plant, and Sharp will assist by supplying technology, which may be used to further expand its ability to produce displays using its IGZO formulation, along with possible poly-silicon LCD screens.

Facebook launches Instagram-like "Camera" app
What do you do after you spending a billion dollars buying a popular photography app? If you're Facebook, you then release your own branded app that does the exact same thing. Yes, Facebook has just launched the Facebook Camera app. The app allows you to take photos or select current photos from your iPhone's camera roll and upload them directly to your Facebook Timeline. Like Instagram, Facebook camera allows you to apply filters (though there are only 16 for now) before uploading your pics.

Apple pulls Airfoil Speakers Touch from the App Store
Apple has pulled Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil Speakers Touch from the App Store. The app, which made it possible to stream from a computer to an iOS-capable device using Airfoil, had been on the store since 2009. Airfoil Speakers Touch 3 was released last month.
The developers say that Apple informed them of the removal on Tuesday, but did not receive a clear answer as to why Apple removed the app. As far as they can tell, they're in full compliance. Airfoil Speakers Touch 3 added the ability to receive audio from other iOS devices and iTunes.

Apple has dropped its estimated shipping wait time for new orders of the third-generation iPad. Facebook releases new filter-equipped Camera app for iPhone and iPod touch
Looking for yet another way to share photos on Facebook? Then you now have a new option to consider courtesy of the company itself, which has today rolled out its new Facebook Camera app for the iPhone and iPod touch. It promises to let you share and view photos faster than within the main Facebook app (and give you higher-res photos), and you'll also get a variety of Instagram-style filters (15 in all) as well as some basic editing tools -- features that were apparently developed independently by Facebook itself and not borrowed from Instagram, which it hasn't yet completed its acquisition of. LG's LS860 Cayenne gets a visit from the unsteady hand of Mr. Blurrycam
Just when you think Mr. Blurrycam bought a tripod, he produces this opaque gem purportedly showing LG's latest handset for Sprint. The LG LS960 Cayenne will apparently pack a 4-inch WVGA IPS display with a dual-core, 1.2GHz S3 processor like the Viper 4G -- plus that sliding keyboard, of course. Sharp und Foxconn kooperieren bei neuer Display-Produktion für iPhone
Bereits Ende März wurde eine neue Kooperation zwischen der Foxconn-Mutter Hon Hai Group und Sharp bekannt. Heute meldet Reuters, dass die beiden Unternehmen in China bei einer Fabrik kooperieren werden, in der unter anderem Displays für Apples iPhone produziert werden sollen.

AT&T validates NVIDIA Icera 410 LTE modem for use on its network

The TechCrunch iPad app is slick and simple
If you're looking for an app-based TechCrunch experience on your iPad, here it is. The iPad app is a streamlined experience over the site in Safari, presenting a simple list of categories to choose from, and 3 basic feeds: the main river (which can be narrowed using those categories), trending stories and curated tweets. There's a lot more under the hood, however.
Commuters will be pleased to know there's a "Save for later" option when clicking the "Share" icon. You can, of course, also share stories via email or social media, and the app allows you to tie your Facebook account in (TechCrunch uses Facebook comments, primarily). My favorite feature is the easy access to Crunchbase data alongside each article.

Microsoft beats Motorola in German SMS patent suit, litigation world cup continues
Munich's regional court has ruled that Motorola is infringing one of Microsoft's patents relating to displaying multiple SMS messages. IDC: iOS und Android dominieren den Smartphone-Markt
Die International Data Corporation (IDC) hat heute die Smartphone-Zahlen für das 1. Quartal 2012 veröffentlicht. Die Zahlen zeigen ganz klar, dass Android und iOS den Markt beherrschen und für die Konkurrenz nur wenig Platz bleibt.
Insgesamt wurden laut der IDC im 1. Quartal weltweit 152,3 Millionen ausgeliefert. 59 Prozent der Smartphones waren mit Android ausgestattet, während Apple mit dem iPhone 23 Prozent des Marktes für sich beansprucht.
Insgesamt wurden also mehr als 8 von 10 Smartphones mit Googles oder Apples Betriebssystem ausgeliefert. Im Vorjahresquartal waren es noch 54,4 Prozent. Speziell Android konnte

Samsung accuses Apple of withholding evidence
Earlier this week, CEOs from Apple and Samsung met for court-ordered mediation talks that turned out to be fruitless. Now, the two companies are back to their legal hijinks with Samsung claiming Apple is withholding evidence, according to a report in FOSS Patents.
Samsung is asking the United States District Court for the Northern District of California to penalize Apple for not complying with an April 12, 2012 order that required Apple to provide Samsung with documents from related proceedings. Gegenüber Technology Review hat Jeanette Horan (Chief Information Officer bei IBM) zugegeben, dass Apples Sprachassistentin, zumindest im firmeninternen Netzwerk, bei IBM nicht mehr viel zu sagen hat. High-level talks between Apple and Samsung regarding patent infringements have reportedly failed, according to the Korea Times. Insgesamt beziehen 47 Prozent aller deutschen Internetnutzer legal Musik aus dem Web. Kostenlose Streaming-Dienste sind dabei die beliebtesten Angebote, aber bereits jeder neunte Internetnutzer bezahlt auch für Songs aus dem Web. Im E-Book-Streit hat sich Apple erneut zu den Anschuldigungen des US-Justizministeriums geäußert. Die Behauptung, Apple habe wettbewerbswidrige Preisabsprachen mit den Verlagen getroffen oder ermöglicht, sei sowohl faktisch als auch rechtlich “fundamental fehlerhaft”.
Das Justizministerium hat Apple und einige Verlage wegen mutmaßlich kartellrechtswidriger Preisabsprachen verklagt. Stein des Anstoßes ist das so genannte Agenturmodell, das es Verlagen ermöglicht, die Preise für E-Books im iBookstore vorab festzulegen. Stolen iPhone photos unwittingly posted by Disney cruise ship employee
"This is Nelson," says iPhone owner Katy McCaffrey of the picture above, posted on her Facebook. "Nelson has my stolen iPhone." McCaffrey took her iPhone on a Disney Cruise back in April, where the phone was either misplaced or stolen. But it's been found, now. Photo Stream was still running, and pictures from the iPhone have started appearing on it of Nelson and his friends and coworkers on the boat.

Apple formally files response to DOJ e-book lawsuit
Claiming that the Department of Justice is completely wrong in its approach and interpretation of the circumstances and public remarks of its entry into the e-book market, Apple has filed a formal response to the lawsuit that accuses it and major book publishers of conspiring to fix prices on e-books and undermine Amazon's ability to discount them. The response echoes Apple's few public statements on the matter, saying it fostered competition where Amazon would have destroyed it.

Microsoft takes Bing Streetside offline in Germany, privacy complaints to blame

Two new Verizon Siri ads feature John Malkovich

Patrick Spence, 14-year veteran of Research in Motion (RIM) and its head of global sales, has departed the company. Spence "will be taking on a leadership position in a different industry," according to RIM spokeswoman Rebecca Freiburger. IHS iSuppli: Apple to buy $27B in semiconductors in 2012
Apple is by far the largest buyer of all kinds of microprocessors, buying 50 percent more RAM, processor and other chips than any other company, with its appetite having tripled since 2009 due to the success of its iOS devices (and to a lesser extent its growing Mac business). ABI: Galaxy Note and other phablets will ship at 208 million a year by 2015, blot out the sun

Rumor has MS planning Outlook Web App, Lync apps for iOS
Microsoft is planning on releasing two new native iOS apps using a Metro-style interface by the end of October, an AppleInsider source claims. The first is the Outlook Web App for Exchange 2012 users, also reportedly known as the "OWA Mobile Client for iOS." The app will require both iOS 5 and an Exchange 2012 mailbox, though some offline functions will be supported. Versions for Windows Phone 7.5 and Android 4.0 are planned, but Microsoft documentation is said to list their features as "to be determined," while the iOS app is expected to provide the "best" mobile support.
