Diablo III becomes fastest-selling PC game ever, deluge of broken PC mice likely to follow
Chalk one up for an at least temporary resurgence in PC gaming. Blizzard can vouch that Diablo III has set a new record for the fastest-selling PC game to date: at 3.5 million copies trading hands through Battle.net downloads or retailers in the first 24 hours, and 6.3 million after a week, that's a whole lot of people battling the biggest of Prime Evils in a very short time. Rumor: Microsoft prepping Office for iOS and Android tablets
Microsoft is preparing to release tablet versions of its Office suite for both Apple's iOS and Google's Android platforms, a source familiar with the software has told BGR. The company had been previously rumored to be bringing its Office suite to the iPad, and the new details, if true, will see the productivity suite arriving on tablets in November.

Creative teases Sound Blaster Axx with the most forced puns we've ever seen
It's been a long, long while since Creative spruced up its Sound Blaster audio hardware, so a teaser for something new certainly has us intrigued. The page mentions little beyond an Axx name and that there will be a "whole new generation" of the technology uncovered on May 30th. Jetzt offiziell: HP entlässt 27.000 Mitarbeiter
Nachdem bereits zum letzten Wochenende Gerüchte über einen massiven Stellenabbau bei Hewlett-Packard aufkamen, hat der Konzern diese im Rahmen der Bekanntgabe der Zahlen für das zweite Quartal des Fiskaljahres 2012 bestätigt. Code hints at native voice dictation in OS X Mountain Lion
Apple could be hoping to bring iOS' Dictation feature to OS X, a code string in the current preview of Mountain Lion suggests. Within the preview's build of Safari, a resource file mentions using a Command-Command hotkey to "Start Dictation." While the option isn't yet functional, it could be by the time Mountain Lion ships, or alternately in a later Safari update.

HP cuts 27,000 jobs, profit tumbles 31 percent in Q2
Looks like rumors of major cost-cutting measures at HP are true: the company along with its fiscal Q2 results has just outlined plans to slash 27,000 jobs by the end of its fiscal 2014. The drop, or about eight percent of its workforce, is being offered an "early retirement" if it doesn't want to wait to be let go involuntarily. The move is intended to streamline HP's operations and save between $3 billion to $3.5 billion a year by the time the cuts are done. Seagate to acquire LaCie
Storage giant Seagate has announced intentions to buy controlling interest in LaCie, a boutique hard drive and storage company.
Seagate has offered to purchase from Philippe Spruch, LaCie's chairman and CEO, and his affiliate, all of their shares, representing 64.5% of the outstanding shares of LaCie. Following receipt of governmental approvals and the close of this transaction, Seagate would commence an all-cash simplified tender offer to acquire the remaining outstanding shares in accordance with the General Regulation of the French Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF). Seagate will acquire LaCie for US $186 million.

LG's 55-inch OLED TV gets official design, possible €9,000 price tag
LG has been coy about details of its 55-inch OLED TV since we saw its hyper-rich organic colors at CES, but it just nailed down a number of details at a Monte Carlo event. New Paris Apple Store on Friday, Stanford 2 store teased
New details have emerged about two upcoming Apple Stores. The first of these is another Parisian outlet, which Apple has announced will launch Friday morning at 9 AM in the city's Quatre Temps mall. Laser VR: Projector + computer vision + laster pointer = fun!
On paper, Laser VR sounds like one of the worst product ideas ever: you need to buy an iPhone, a laser pointer, and a Pico projector just to get started, but darn if we here at TUAW aren't drooling over the prospect.
An iPhone provides both the graphics generation piece, which is piped through a cable to a small projection system (low end projection systems now start around US$125), and the computer vision system that aligns itself to the projected image and interprets the laser pointer position for gaming.

Apple Store rendering shows another glass box in California
Anyone who has visited the Stanford Shopping Center cant miss the black sheeting that covers Apple's upcoming retail store, says a Palo Alto Online report. The new store will occupy two vacant storefronts and eventually will replace a mini-store that's located nearby. Residents can see the breadth of the construction, but the design and layout of the store are a closely guarded secret.
The biggest source of information is the recently-discovered final building plans, which were submitted to the City of Palo Alto earlier this year. Jury issues verdict in Android suit, finds that Google doesn't infringe Oracle patents
It appears that the jury has come to a conclusion in the Oracle v. Google trial, determining that Android does not infringe Oracle patents. Judge William Aslup of the US District court for Northern California exonerated the search giant following a trial that lasted three weeks, ruling that Google did not infringe on six claims in US Patent RE38,104, along two claims in US Patent 6,061,520. HTC One XL coming to Germany, drags LTE with it
In the US, Asia and Australia they've already had their fill of the HTC One XL. But, in Europe, they've had to make do with the lame ol' HSPA+ One X. That is, until now. Jony Ive's knighting ceremony
Apple designer Jony Ive was knighted today in a ceremony held at Buckingham Palace, according to a BBC News UK report. It's an honor he said was "absolutely thrilling."

Shadow QR Codes funktionieren nur mittags (Video)

Um die inzwischen etwas abgegessene Idee von QR Codes ein bisschen aufzupeppen und wieder attraktiver zu machen hat sich die koreanische Ladenkette Emart 3D QR Codes einfallen lassen, die nur in der umsatzschwachen Tageszeit zwischen 12 und 1 Uhr mittags funktionieren. Das hat wohl funktioniert, denn so konnten sie den Umsatz in dieser Zeit um 25 % steigern. Fragt sich nur was passiert wenn es mittags mal längere Zeit hartnäckig bewölkt ist. Video nach dem Break.

AT&T begins refarming 2G spectrum in New York City
As mobile operators continue to move toward the promised land known as "the future," it grows ever more important for them to make some room for it. AT&T announced today that it has started the process of refarming its 2G 1900MHz spectrum in New York City, which should alleviate some of the growing demand on the carrier's 3G and 4G networks within the city. Google has released a major update of its Search app for iOS, v2.0.0. The iPhone side of the title has been overhauled, gaining "major" speed improvements and a redesigned interface. Schnell war es um die Gerüchte über eine iOS-Version von Microsoft wieder ruhig geworden, nachdem das Unternehmen derartige Berichte im Februar dementiert hatte. Lit Motors C-1: Gyroskopisch balancierter 2-Rad-Kabinenroller bleibt auch nach Unfall stehen

Die kalifornische Firma Lit Motors verspricht für 2014 die Auslieferung eines Gefährts, das konsequent auf die Bedürfnisse urbaner Mobilität getrimmt wurde: kleinstmöglich und wendig aber halbwegs komfortabel und spaßig zu fahren, außerdem natürlich per Elektromotor angetrieben. Das Resultat ist ein 2-Rad-Kabinenroller mit einer Reichweite von 240 bis 354 Kilometer per Akkuladung und einer Hochgeschwindigkeit von 193 km/h, der zwei Passagieren (ein klein wenig) Platz bietet. Dabei wird der C-1 wie ein Segway gyroskopisch ausbalanciert und das auch noch nach einem Crash. In den USA soll das Gefährt 2014 für umgerechnet 9.500 bis 12.600 Euro zu haben sein.

Microsoft Office für iOS Android soll im November erscheinen
Nachdem es bereits vor einigen Monaten Spekulationen um eine baldige Veröffentlichung von Microsofts Office-Paket für iOS gab, war es schnell wieder still geworden um Word, Excel und Co. Jetzt gibt es neue Gerüchte, die einen Release im November vorhersagen.
Die neuen Informationen will Boy Genius Report von einer “zuverlässigen Quelle” erhalten haben. Die Office-Suite soll demnach nicht nur für Apples iPad, sondern auch für Android-Geräte erscheinen. Beide Versionen werden demnach im November 2012 starten.

Red Fly Studio is the group behind last year's great Inertia: Escape Velocity. Its latest title, Elenints, is more abstract. The name "Elenints" might come from a combination of the words "elements" and "integers". Google search app for iPhone, iPad re-designed
For some reason I hadn't quite relegated the Google Search app on my iPhone to a folder, where most apps go to die. But it should have. The old Google Search app was atrocious -- a seemingly willful expenditure of effort on something so terrible it would serve to dissuade people from using it (or iOS) altogether. The new Google app is 100% better.
On the iPhone, I'm noticing more UI niceties, and the "app" gets out of your way as much as possible. The previous version was full of irritating usability quirks. Once Siri came along, I all but forgot it existed.
Google Goggles, however, and the picture searches possible, are great (though not new). The iPad app is really quite pleasing to use, and having all the Google

Apple, Samsung fail to reach settlement during ordered talks
Apple and Samsung have failed to reach any kind of settlement after court-ordered talks on Monday and Tuesday, according to the Korea Times. A Samsung official tells the publication that the companies could find "no clear agreement" on their patent dispute. The talks were extremely high-level, involving Apple CEO Tim Cook, and Samsung CEO Choi Gee-sung.

Google Search for iPhone gets the 2.0 remake, full-screen search and swipes aplenty
Google gave its official search app an iPad remake late last year, and now it's smaller iPhone and iPod touch devices getting the new UI's treatment. As of Google Search App 2.0, the smaller iOS devices see a big emphasis on full-screen navigation, with an automatic full-screen mode and a dedicated full-screen photo search making the most of the limited display real estate. Seagate to buy LaCie for $186 million, expand its storage empire
Seagate and LaCie have gotten friendly before -- the former company's drives are in the LaCie 2big Thunderbolt HDD, for instance -- but the storage makers are about to get even cozier. IBM blocking iPhone's Siri on internal networks
Siri, the voice command system on the iPhone 4S, is being blocked on IBM's internal networks, the company's CIO has revealed. Jeanette Horan mentioned the fact in an interview with MIT's Technology Review this week. The core issue involves the way Siri translates speech; rather than performing the task on a phone, it uploads recordings to Apple servers, where the speech is deciphered before results are sent back. Kapersky "disappointed" he can't sell AV software on iOS

MIT's LiquiGlide could spell the end of slow-moving ketchup nightmares (video)
A team from MIT has decided to end slow-pouring ketchup problems once and for all with its LiquiGlide project. Instead of karate-chopping the 57 logo on the bottle's neck, a super-non-stick coating is sprayed on the inside of its glass container. It's so good that even highly viscous liquids like ketchup and mayonnaise roll out of the bottle and onto your dinner as if it was water. Pocket Planes gets a trailer, looks great
I first saw Pocket Planes, Nimblebit's next freemium title, running at GDC earlier this year. Being a huge fan of both Pocket Frogs and Tiny Tower, I can't wait to see it in action on my iPhone and iPad. Unfortunately, the game's not out yet (it's still "coming soon"), but Nimblebit has released a trailer below, so you can at least see what the game is like and how it plays.

"Blind Self-Portrait": Selbstporträtmaschine für Grobmotoriker (Video)

Nicht jeder kann zeichnen, ganz zu schweigen von Selbstporträts, die auch eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit haben. Die Künstler Kyle McDonald und Matt Mets machen es mit ihrem Selbstporträtautomaten "Blind Self-Portrait" nun auch dem letzten Grobmotoriker möglich: ein Rechner trackt das Gesicht seines Gegenübers in Echtzeit und wandelt das Bild in Linien um. Samsung has 'potentially serious issues' with nano-SIM vote
Following last week's compromise between Motorola, RIM, and Apple resulting in a nano-SIM design submission, Samsung has filed a complaint with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) complaining about the voting process on the final design. After an initial denial of Samsung's appeal, Samsung filed the letter with ETSI stating that Samsung believes the vote was advanced before enough time was allowed for discussion and "consensus building" within the organization. Regardless of Samsung's complaint, voting continues and is expected to conclude sometime this week.

Comcast rolls out enhanced VOIP, X1, Project Dayview
In a trio of recent announcements from cable giant Comcast, the company announced Voice 2Go, adding a new assortment of features for the Xfinity Voice suite pulled from the smartphone feature set. Also at Boston's The Cable Show Comcast's new next-generation customizable user interface codenamed "Project Dayview" was demonstrated. RAMPAGE 6 notepad runs Android 2.3 in a rugged package
The last time we heard from SDG Systems, it was shilling its Trimble Nomad with Android 1.5. The company's new device, the RAMPAGE 6 (confusingly, it's also known as the Mesa Rugged Notepad), thankfully includes a less prehistoric build of the OS. Mobile security researchers present Android Malware Genome Project at IEEE
Android's openness, combined with its popularity, has lead a few of the developer faithful astray -- with malware being a legitimate concern for the mobile operating system. Researchers power microbots made of bubbles with lasers
They may not be "robots" as most have come to expect, but these so-called microrobots developed by a team of researchers from the University of Hawaii at Manoa do have at least one thing in common with many of their mechanical counterparts: lasers. As IEEE Spectrum reports, the bots themselves are actually nothing more than bubbles of air in a saline solution, but they become "microrobots" when the laser is added to the equation, which serves as an engine of sorts and allows the researchers to control both the speed and direction of the bubbles. That, they say, could allow the bots to be used for a variety of tasks, including assembling microstructures and then disappearing without a trace when the bubble is popped. PSA: Windows Phone Marketplace now requires Windows Phone 7.5
Microsoft warned us last month that it would be snipping legacy OS support in Windows Phone Marketplace within a few weeks, and it just made good on that heads-up. We love finding out how things work, and arguably one of the most important parts of the smartphones and tablets we thrive on is the accelerometer gauging our device's orientation. Imagine our delight, then, when we see the University of Illinois' Bill Hammack (i.e. The Engineer Guy) giving a visual rundown of how accelerometers work. Daily iPhone App: Siegecraft lays siege on the App Store
When Siegecraft was first released on the App Store (by Crescent Moon Games, who have made some really amazing titles over the past few years), I remember it being marketed as "Angry Birds in 3D." And that description kind of works -- you are indeed flinging various weapons (though not of the aviary kind) at structures and trying to bring them down.
But I think a description like "active tower defense" works a little bit better. In Siegecraft, you are building towers, but instead of them just firing away on their own, you need to aim and fire them yourself, defending against invaders and trying to lay siege to enemy towns. Apple updates digital camera RAW for iPhoto '11, Aperture 3
Apple late today has issued Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.13, adding support for six new and recent camera models now on the market. The new update adds support for models from Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic and Sony. Still missing from the list of supported cameras (among other models) is the Fujifilm X-S1, a high-end "superzoom" camera we reviewed in late March. The new update requires OS X 10.6.8 or later.
