Twitter app update brings improved discover, search and notifications to iOS and Android
It's not like there's any shortage of alternatives, but those sticking with the ooh-ficial Twitter app on iOS and Android woke up to a rather pleasant update today. Briefly, the company's promising improvements to discover, search and notifications, with the new build allowing users to view "Activity" -- described as a "stream of updates that shows which tweets are favorited or retweeted by the people you follow and which accounts those people follow or add to lists." Search has also been made simpler in both programs, with the Connect tab allowing you to start typing the first or last name or username of the person

Padprop iPad stand giveaway
Last year we reviewed the Padprop iPad stand. It's a super-handy device that lets you choose multiple viewing angles, rest an iPad between your knees for easy typing and even stores a set of Apple earbuds neatly and securely. Opera 12 opens its beta doors: improves performance and stability, adds new themes
Similar to that other, foxy browser, Opera reached numerical version 12 (although in beta form), promising to be as fast and smooth as it's ever been. Included in the new revision are a slew of under-the-hood enhancements, along with a few cosmetic alterations. JC Penney recruits core member of Apple's retail design team
As a part of a management expansion, JC Penney has hired a core member of Apple's retail design staff, Benjamin Fay, as its new executive VP of real estate, store design and development. The press release contains a statement from JCP CEO Ron Johnson, who was long the head of Apple's retail division until he left last November. "Ben is an incredibly creative professional with extraordinary leadership skills. Amazon's Q1 2012 earnings: net income down 35 percent to $130 million, net sales at $13.18 billion
It's no Apple-sized quarter, but you'd need to be on HGTV's Million Dollar Rooms a handful of times over to scoff at Amazon's Q1 2012 earnings. Or, you know, Wall Street. comScore: Amazon Kindle Fire is 54.4% of US Android tablets
Amazon's Kindle Fire now makes up the absolute majority of the Android tablet platform in the US, comScore found in a fresh study. The e-reader and tablet crossover represented 54.4 percent of all Android tablets sold in the country. At second place, the entire Samsung Galaxy Tab lineup comprised just 15.4 percent of Android slates.

ComScore pegs Kindle Fire at more than 50 percent of the Android tablet market
We've seen some pretty clear indications that the Kindle Fire was rapidly gaining market share among Android tablets, and ComScore is now out with a new report that indicates it recently crossed a big milestone. According to the research firm, the Fire's market share fully doubled from December to February, with it standing at 54.4 percent as of the end of the month. Twitter on Android, iOS gets new Discover, search, notices
Twitter pushed out a substantial update to its Android (Google Play) and iOS (App Store) apps to reorganize and streamline some of its existing features. The Discover tab has now been changed to show activity from those being followed, such as whether they favorite or retweet a post as well as add people or lists. Stories in the section are more dynamic and will expand to include related Twitter updates rather than staying relatively self-contained.

Ex-Sun chief says Android could use Java tech freely
Oracle may have run into an obstacle in its lawsuit against Google during testimony by former CEO Jonathan Schwartz. Despite Oracle's own CEO Larry Ellison being unsure if Java was free to use for Android's framework, Schwartz said the programming interfaces were always cleared for free use and weren't proprietary. Sun didn't sue Google over its early Android use as it didn't feel it "had any grounds" to take action, he testified.

Best Buy Connect no longer accepting new activations, service to end June 1st
Remember Best Buy Connect? If so, you'll soon have a few more megabytes of humanized DDR3 freed up, as it appears that the retail giant is ready to put the kibosh on its own branded mobile broadband service nearly two years after it was first unveiled. Motorola to fight Apple patent on validity, not violation
Motorola in a Munich court on Thursday made a partial concession in Apple's lawsuit over touch technology. The RAZR designer's attorney didn't directly contest a view by the presiding judge that Motorola was likely violating a patent for iOS' bounce effect during scrolling. Acer's Q1 2012: World's fourth biggest PC maker made just $11.2 million in profit
Acer's Q1 financial report reveals that the fourth biggest PC maker in the world is feeling weak after posting a very modest profit -- three months after it declared a $212 million loss for 2011. Turnover for the first three months of this year was NT$113 billion ($3.8 billion) and profits after tax were NT$331 million ($11.2 million). In context, the company suffered an 11.4 percent decline in revenue quarter-on-quarter, but still made NT$118 billion ($40 million) in profit during Q1 2011, a spectacular collapse of 72 percent year-on-year. Apple to build off-campus cafeteria for extra security
During a Tuesday meeting, the Cupertino Planning Commission approved an Apple request to build a new off-campus cafeteria, Mercury News reports. The facility should measure 21,468 square feet, and will be located on the corner of Alves and Bandley, just a short walk or bicycle ride from the campus at 1 Infinite Loop. Apple's director of real estate facilities, Dan Whisenhunt, explained during the meeting that the cafeteria will allow Apple workers to eat and talk without being overheard by competitors.

Kaspersky Lab: Apple is '10 years behind Microsoft' on security
Kaspersky founder and CEO Eugene Kaspersky told Computer Business Review that malware targeting the Mac is beginning to grow and Apple needs to take notice.
The CEO said Apple is "ten years behind Microsoft in terms of security," and asserts that Apple must change its approach towards security soon. iPhone 4S, iPad 2 lead in Good mobile enterprise activations
The iPhone 4S was far and away the most-activated device during the March quarter by Good Technology enterprise customers, a new study by the firm says. The phone represented 37 percent of activations, roughly four times the amount of any other device. Box releases new API, more OneCloud apps
Cloud filesharing service Box has released a brand new version of its API, allowing iOS and Mac developers to make even easier use of Box in their apps. The US federal government is, by far and away, the largest user of wireless spectrum in the States -- much of which is spoken for by the Department of Defense. Samsung has decided to go beyond just TV ads decrying Apple stores to actively campaigning in front of them. As seen first-hand (below) by well-known Australian video maker Nate Burr and recounted through checks by mUmBRELLA, the Korean company has recruited marketers at Tongue to send buses of mock protesters to Apple's Sydney store, urging those inside to "wake up." Netgear on Thursday staked out its position as the first to have an 802.11ac Wi-Fi router. The R6300 will use the full potential of the spec and run up to 1.3Gbps on the 5GHz band, effectively removing the router as a bottleneck. Nintendo confirms that it's selling 3DS at a loss, expects that to change

Jonathan Ive wins British Visionary Innovator award
Jony Ive can add British Visionary Innovator to his long list of design awards. The Apple design head was given the award by Britain's Intellectual Property Office as part of its World Intellectual Property Day celebration.
As noted in a Macworld UK report, Ive won with 46.6 percent of the vote. He was followed by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the man behind HTTP protocol and the World Wide Web, who grabbed 18.6 percent.

Angry Birds Space has gotten a free update that adds ten new levels to the extremely popular bird-tossing game. There are ten new icy planets to orbit around, and the update (on iOS, at least) also provides twenty free Space Eagles to play with, and the option to earn one more free per day.

Acer regains PC share, optimistic on Windows 8, ultrabooks
Acer in discussing its latest results at an investor's conference was hopeful that this was a sign of a widescale resurgence in PCs for the industry. Its climb from 10.1 percent share in the fall to 10.9 percent this winter was a sign the company's "competitiveness is coming back," according to chairman JT Wang, and that Acer would climb back to third place while Dell sank. Nintendo reports first annual operating loss, Apple to blame
Nintendo has reported its first annual operating loss ever. The company lost US$454.4 million from 2011 to 2012. The Wii is a few years old now, and the company's latest handheld, the Nintendo 3DS, hasn't been selling near as well as it was supposed to. Nintendo claims it'll turn sales figures around quickly, however. Prices on the 3DS are set to drop, which should prop up sales of that device, and Nintendo is also planning to release a new console unit called the Wii U within the next year.

MetroPCS announces Q1 2012 results: total revenues up, new subscriber growth shrinks
Regional network MetroPCS has announced total revenues of approximately $1.3 billion for Q1 2012, up from $1.2 bilion in the last quarter and up seven percent from the same period in 2011. TSMC 2012 Q1 results: $1.1 billion profit good, 20-nanometer processes expensive
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has offered up its first quarter results for the year, with another mixed bag for the company. Square reports volume up 25 percent, now at $5B per year
While mobile payments are increasing generally, with new systems for smartphone users on the increase, Square has reported a remarkable 25 percent increase in payment volume since just last month. The company is now processing transactions at an estimated annual rate of $5 billion per year, up from $4 billion in March. In addition to the convenience of card processing with mobile devices, Square credits its fast processing times as part of its popularity.

Logitech shakes up executive team after earnings report

Technology company 3M and The St. Paul, Minnesota library held an open house today, demonstrating the new 3M cloud-based library lending service. The 3M Cloud Library offers a turnkey system complete with preloaded and licensed digital content, in-library hardware, and access to apps for borrowing and reading. Two-thirds of Americans unwilling to spend over $50 a month on mobile data, says Parks Associates
In a recent report titled Mobile Data and Applications, research outfit Parks Associates found that a large chunk of Stateside consumers aren't willing to pay more than $50 per month for a mobile data plan. What's also interesting here -- but not surprising -- is the study shows nearly 50 percent of smartphone users are completely oblivious to the amount of data they're consuming every month. Google's Rubin: Android does not really help with ad revenue
In testimony that appeared to be crafted specifically to downplay any revenue generated by Android, Google's mobile head Andy Rubin told prosecutors in the ongoing trial with Oracle over Java licensing that the system exists mainly to "make it easier to access Google services" and that he did not expect the OS would contribute significantly to Google's ad revenues. While Google makes around $2.5 billion in mobile ad revenue every year, a substantial portion of that comes from iOS advertising rather than Android ads.

Oracle loses shot at using revived Java patent vs. Google
Oracle saw a significant setback Wednesday after Judge William Alsup ruled (below) that the company couldn't use a revived Java patent against Google. He told the database firm that, as the trial had already started before the patent had been put back into effect, Oracle couldn't use the claim as part of the proceedings. If Oracle had been given permission, it would inherently bias the trial by forcing Google to defend against claims it was told wouldn't be factors.

Samsung Exynos 4 Quad official, confirmed for new Galaxy S
Samsung on Wednesday ended one of the largest rumors surrounding the new Galaxy S with news of its main processor. The Exynos 4 Quad carries a namesake four ARM Cortex-A9 cores and is made on a newer, smaller 32 nanometer process. Although it clocks in at the same 1.4GHz as in newer Samsung phones, it's roughly twice as powerful while using 20 percent less power, the company claimed.

Study: Apple's barring of UDID will cost advertisers, devs
Advertisers who are affected by Apple's ban from using the Unique Device Identifier (UDID) information on individual iOS devices will lose as much as 24 percent of their ad revenue, according to claims from mobile ad server MoPub, reports MacWorld UK. The use of UDID information is a widespread tool for measuring the performance of advertising and developing pricing models for paying app publishers.

Apple wins patents for Smart Covers, iTunes Store, Time Machine and more
Patently Apple reports that Apple had acquired a number of new patents to its arsenal today. Among the 25 patents issued to the company include:
A second patent for the iTunes store and its rental system, originally filed in January 2008
A fifth patent for Time Machine, covering a user interface that shows earlier versions of data. This was originally filed in 2007.
Design patents for the current-generation iMac, iPad Smart Covers, Apple Store displays, the iOS Newsstand icon and a power adapter.

Motorola Solutions reports Q1 2012 sales of $2 billion, expects jump in Q2
Motorola Solutions (MSI) -- the less familiar Motorola that makes radios, barcode scanners and such for government and enterprise sectors -- just posted sales of $2 billion for the first quarter of 2012. Google had wanted Android tablets to get 33% share in 2011
The tail end of Google mobile VP Andy Rubin's testimony on Android's revenue potential has revealed that the company made broad presumptions about how well Android tablets would fare in the market place. The projections seen by The Verge had Android tablets claiming 10 million shipments out of an estimated 30 million in 2011, or 33 percent share. It had thought that its share would go down in 2012, to 22 percent, but mostly as the market would be getting larger while Android sales stayed flat.
